What would your party do in this situation?
>>94854096Nyarlathotep is so based, all the stories he's in within Lovecraft literature are so greatI'd most likely talk with him, Nyarlathotep is a bit of a trickster/rugpuller and talking is his specialty
>>94854096What version of dnd has this?
>>94854096Find a new gm.
>>94854448fuck off, wandering heroes encounter god-level creatures or literal gods all the time in ancient myth
>>94854096If the PCs immediately know what they're dealing with then the GM is a paste-eater who misses the whole point of a shapeshifting trickster-god.>>94854453Could be funny to have the odd "shifty bearded vagabond" be just that, playing up their mysterious aspects specifically so that suspicious rubes extend more hospitality than they otherwise might. Of course if imitating a sufficiently picaresque god's mortal guise they may enjoy protection anyway (as do those who shelter them) right until hubris flips indulgence to wrath that is. Good quest idea to be hired by a sceptic noble or overzealous cleric, perhaps each has a competing crew on the wily hobo's trail.
>>94854096Depends on what system we're playing, and on the setting (power level for PCs will vary a lot).
>>94854814your party travels across different settings and changes their power level every time?
>>94854453D&D (assumed game since OP said DM) does not emulate ancient myth especially well and mythos entities showing up in games or settings that are not explicitly mythos games is usually really poorly executed. I stand by my choice to find another GM if they spring that sort of bullshit. If it's oc donut steel not! Nyaharlhtpo I would be open to see where the game goes.
>>94855070I think its 100% fine if a DM throws Nyarlathotep at a party but only if it's a sort-of dialogue or non-combat encounter where the PCs are informed of something important, are given something, are teleported somewhere, etc.Nyarlathotep is very much a trickster god much like >>94854516 says, but he's first and foremost a messenger/mouthpiece of the outer gods. It's not like he'd show up in front of you specifically to wreck your shit for no reason. He's absolutely capable to, but that isn't his style.Planting a god in a walking form striding from place to place in the mortal realm?Very cool concept. I approve, as long as it isn't overused, and it isn't immediately given away like they have a nametag on their shirt. Reveals like that are best recognized in hindsight.
>>94854096>8 man party of level 20 monstrous PCs with max attunement legendary items and, several PCs with adult or ancient dragon mounts, min-maxed to hell and back, and the elo bard- vampire lord has a draconic shard. On his moonblade. Probably spend a turn looking at each other wondering when the real BBEG was going to show up.
>>94854096Hmm. I dont think +1 is enough magic to cut the mustard here and i dont have any vorpal, non-euclidian or n-th dimensional weapons on me. My spell list isnt great either - no psychic or radiant damage. I do have a few shots at banishment, but its probably best to avoid this one and come back later
>>94855250Nyarlathotep could blink and they'd all be destroyed instantly.
>>94854096Ask him if it's pronounced Nyarloth-hotep or Nyarlo-thotep.
>>94856243I always said it like thishttps://voca.ro/14JxyVhqdFvN>Nyar-lah-toh-tepI always saw -thep as having a hard "T" sound instead of a "Th"
>>94854096Well, we play OSE with lots of AD&D bits and I'm the current DM, so Total Party Geas per Deities & Demigods.
>>94856128But how can you blink if you can't close your eyes? Even worse, you're not blinking at what you think you are. I know you have truesight. What you see is real. Just not what you think it is.
>>94856128Not if I have a forcefield
Do you guys fuck with the cliche of making Lovecraft's "Pantheon" the "real" gods of the Universe? Because I see it more and more often lately and I'm kinda conflicted on it.Like on the one hand I love Lovecraft's works, but on the other, it kinda stops being surprising when everyone knows who those deities are.
>>94856745Outer Gods should just be alien-gods from a different dimension that are present in other dimensionsThey can pop up sometimes and visit, but they shouldn't be the core pantheon of gods in any fantasy setting I don't think
>>94856745>it kinda stops being surprising when everyone knows who those deities are.Unless you wanna build whole new pantheon from scratch you'll be using some combination of deities everyone knows or can easily look up. So I wouldnt worry too much about it.
>>94856812That should be the Great Old Ones if anything. Because Lovecraft makes it explicitly clear that the Other Gods are categorically above the Gods of Earth(the Universe)
>>94856308CUTE
>>94856308you sound really gay man
>>94856308your aptitude is wasted on Nyarlathotep, you should offer yourself to Shub-Niggurath
>>94854096They go insane and die>>94854448This desu>>94854453This is different than Hermes showing up and giving you a flower
>>94856882https://voca.ro/13LoAWHjm3W8>>94856905No way, the reveal at the end of The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath turned me into a Nyarlathotep fan for lifeI get the joke though
>>94856915Maybe you should have sex with women
>>94856308>>94856915Different anon but your voice is kind of awakening some things in me, anon.
>>94857894I hope its magic powers, I'm still waiting for mine
>>94854096>running Carcosa Hopefully they run like hell until theyencounter something scarier and hope they fight. One player would probably try and sacrifice some stuff to it though.
>>94857940Tell me about itI know about Carcosa from Robert Chambers' TKIY stories and other authors' continuations of it
>>94854096>What would your party do in this situation?...wonder how we became caught up in the stupidest ring of hell playing D&D.
>>94856745yeah i think making up your own gods mantains the mystery and keeps the spirit of lovecraftian writing, after all they should be known with different names and guises in other realitiesalso btw i don't really like when it's angels vs demons AND lovecraftian squids like in pathfinder, the demons should just be entities from the void or beings corrupted by the other gods
>Show me that tableI'll accept it even it is scribbled with a pen on a toilet paper but I want to see if that is actually on a roll-able table if you claim that.
>>94860892>no
>>94860892>00 Nyarlathotep>01-99 roll again
>>94860977Honestly sounds in-line for him
>>94860892>he hands you the table>00-19: azathoth 20-39: shub-niggurath 40-59: nyarlathotep 60-79: cthulhu 80-99: yog-sothoth
>>94854096We kill Nyarlathotep.
>>94861130lol ok
>>94859506Its a mid/lotfp era osr setting. Has shock value virgin sacrifice to mythos entities stuff, scifantasy sword & planet pulp, largely a very sparse hex crawl with a lot of room to add in your own flair. The houserules it proposes are generally insane like D20 HD roll everyone's all the time. Lots of neat items, monsters, ancient rituals to control huge monsters that typically involve doing bad shit to X-unusual-coloured-men. Pretty fun to run so far.
