Underappreciated portrayals of elves in media? We all know about WoW/Warhammer/Tolkien/etc elves already, let's give some of the lesser-known knife ears some attention so that we might better appreciate the fullness of what Elves are and can be.For me it has to be the Lorwyn/Shadowmoor Elves, fell in love with them as soon as I started playing Magic: the Gathering. Which was, uncoincidentally, right when Shadowmoor released. It's actually quite novel how they incorporate both halves of the Light Elf // Dark Elf dichotomy, where the "Lightness" or "Darkness" is context dependent: In Lorwyn, a world of perpetual day where everything is idyllic and low-stakes, being exclusionary and literally worshipping beauty made them the antagonists. In Shadowmoor, a world of perpetual night where everything is twisted and monstrous, being exclusionary and worshipping beauty makes them the only ones trying to keep the world from going to total shit.

Humans are basically OP, they are protected by the one true God, can touch iron etc. They're mostly limited by their mortal life spans and their daily toils. Elves sometimes steal children that haven't been baptized yet, in order to raise them amongst themselves and train them into elite warriors and leaders in times of war. Though this wouldn't translate too well into most game systems.Another explanation more fit fore games is that humans do in fact not learn faster than elves or other races, but they just tend to produce exceptional individuals from time to time.

Sword autist here.Dual wielding in general is a tricky topic. It was rarely done and mostly with weapons that had the main function of parrying. For military purposes it was pretty much non existant. As to curved swords and sabers: The curve helps to maintain an angle at which the blade can cut more easily when swinging it. Think of cutting a piece of paper with scissors and finding that sweet spot where you can just push the scissor through. That's of course just the short version.

Most effective way to dual wield is to have one longer straight and one shorter sword, prefferably with a "locking" hilt (picrel).While I did see a couple of people try dual-wield curved swords, as anon above said, the weight of the blade makes it top heavy so you are mostly restricted to circular movements which are extremely predictable. Big reason why straight swords are used are simply because of overwhelming reach AND you have an option to stab which opens up very big pool of possibilities and techniques.

We could think of reasons all day where you'd be thankful you knew how to do it. But why do it as the one thing you always do? I think the issue is fantasy, and RPGs in particular, often assume your guy can only do the one thing in his entire life and not much else. Is a polearm better for this situation? A shield? Tight quarters means short weapons? Who cares. Your incredibly finite character resources are going to be invested in only one of your many options. Well, as if most systems even model a difference in these choices anyway, but logic breaks down at the first step. Why would you dual wield? Well, in most situations you wouldn't, but the one time it comes up it may save your life. But now we bow to the supremacy of most worthy investments. The logic falters at step one. Though, by that same note, it's fine just like that. Not like the game is going to punish you for it. A character's approach to combat also tends to be part of their entire theme and look. Which is what it's really about.
