Affinity for artifacts worked because there's a lot of cheap artifacts that do something marginally useful.
Affinity for dragons may as well read "affinity for 6-drops with no inbuilt discount" which is probably the most useless line of text imaginable.
>>
>>96491766
'It' has worked for 30 years. The changes in templating to this point have been focused on making the game clearer and more recently saving space to overcomplicate the cards. This has identity politics and woke pronouns written all over it.
>>
>>96491766
I would greater prefer a clear delineation in templating between cards and players, or we're going to readily run into mixed meaning "they" within a single text box.

Honestly, I've never been a fan of food as a card subtype. It's kinda cute when there are food synergies, especially when it comes to food creatures, but it was one of the many mechanics in the past 10 years that just didn't feel like it justified being in a game about magic. Food should've just been a creature type and all food tokens should've been kindred/tribal artifact tokens.

This disbelief and absolute bullshit is what makes you the vermin we should erase and gatekeep. Magic survived many many years being just Magic. No Spider-Man, No Avatar, No LOTR, just Magic, the wrong belief that this “Fornitification” of Magic is necessary for the game to survive is the kind of retarded statement that COCKS and Nosewater are trying to sell to their revenues, but is nothing more than unadulterated greed and corporate lies and the reason why Magic is in his actual decadent state

Other IPs will continue to elevate the dead Magic IP and in a decade there will be a Magic card for Star Wars, Pokemon, Warcraft, Jojos, League of Legends, DC comics, The War in Iraq, and more

The show (and movie, for some reason) are still in development hell, likely because every time WotC hands the director a script or outline, they realize what a fucking flaming dumpster fire MtG """writing""" is.
MtG "writing" is basically what happens when you spend 99% of your time on the premise and 1% of the time on the actual story. You get an interesting setting that goes fucking nowhere in a paint-by-numbers plotline that makes all the characters feel incredibly shallow, and the longer you spend in the setting the more you realize that it's not fleshed out at all.
WotC simply can not create stories. We saw this with literally every story since Weatherlight's infamous crash and burn ending. WAR was WotC's infinite wisdom thinking "Maybe if we put a HUGE spotlight on the conclusion to the Jacestice League Saga, people will like it because they just weren't giving it a chance!" Lo and behold, it was so fucking bad they aborted the book series midway through. Not to mention it gave rise to set design so bad the game STILL feels the negative effects of uncommon planeswalkers with static abilities (oh, hi Kaito, didn't see you there!)
It's legitimately fucking embarrassing when I read Gay Bolas Anon's fanfiction to make fun of it then I find myself thinking "Man, this is actually enormously better than anything WotC put out." Someone's fanfiction that tries to reframe Bolas as being in love with Ugin and not knowing how to express his feelings did a better job than WotC could with extremely basic fantasy plots. Why? Because within his story all the character felt like they weren't cardboard cutouts designed to fill an archetype despite said archetype serving no purpose in the story. Ugin being a useless asshole was actually explained as a flaw instead of him always having some bullshit reason that's never explained to be a useless asshole. WotC, somehow, has less self-awareness than an anon that wrote fanfiction about Gay Bolas.
>>
My issue is that I DON'T want a Magic: the Gathering show. I don't care about the plot of most sets. I want to make up my own lore based on the artwork and the hints of the flavor text. I don't want a serial drama that has a 99% chance of being worse than any headcanon.

Ok fine, if Magic story is so fucking boring and shitty, then here’s a small proposal literally off the top of my head as I type:

The plane is Rabiah, and after years of turmoil, the Djinn and Efreeti have taken over the cities beyond the Sea of Sand. Basri Ket has been teleported to a local slum through an Omenpath that, through the rough and chaotic energies of the portal, reignites his Spark while destroying said Omenpath forever. When Basri arrives, he notices the locals are terrified from the rule of the Djinn who no longer are bound to lamps or masters. Solider tier Efreeti roam the alleyways and streets of Rabiah along with servant raiders and cutthroats, about to come upon him and some beggars but they quickly hide him in a nearby hovel, as the sand itself whips up with flashes of lighting and flame passing them by. As the raiders and Efreeti leave, Basri learns about the plight of the people of Rabiah, and how once there was a great king who could trap these beings into lamps and other antiques fused with magic. Basri now understands the purpose of his journey, and vows to continue the virtues of Oketra by uniting the Rabiahns in solidarity against the tyrannous Djinn. But in doing so for the sake of freedom of the people, he must find a way to pacify the Djinn and Efreeti without resorting to the same enslavement that previous generations did upon them. The answer lies somewhere….in the Sea of Sand…

So I recently got into mtg, but is it normal for the quality of the cards to be kinda ... meh? I noticed pretty much every card I got from some packs I got as a gift had the little oval hologram stamp either off center, turned at an angle (so it's not parallel with the card), or the oval itself was imperfect (e.g. little dents into it, foil poking out of the oval, etc). The cards and their art themselves seemed fine though.
>>
>>96495764
You might've gotten fakes, there's sometimes issues but typically not with regular cards. The oval thing is specifically an anti-counterfeiting measure.
>>
>>96495764
This has been a problem for a long time and WotC doesn't even bother trying to fix it because they know their consumer base are addicts that will eat it up anyway.
The 1/1 TOR came out of the pack off-center causing it to be graded 9/10.

The quality of cards has plummeted since 2019 and it was somewhat hit and miss before then. There are more extreme occurences of misplaced holostamps than your photos sometimes appearing far away from the intended placement, or completely missing. If your store has older bulk or your friends have some older cards, try looking at foil cards in the original frame or modern (pic related) frame, and compare them to cards in the M15 (holostamp) frame, especially those from 2019 onwards.

>>96495787
And yet it doesn't work, if anything lending more validity to fake cards because their placement and quality is better than official WotC product.

>>96496165
There are instances where people will hype up a card before it's released causing counterfeit producers to print it, only for the value to plummet within days of the official release. We're trying to discourage this but EDHonlies are desperate for whatever new garbage WotC cooks up.

I've had this keyword worked out long before Exhaust.literally just strips all tension from it. Going from a game-wide boolean to a creature-based on turns it from a keyword with gameplay implications, to one that has almost no considerations as to when you should use it. The time you use an Exhaust ability is always as soon as you are able to. Very boring mechanic.

>I'd like exhaust to come back ngl. It seemed like a good mechanic in an absolute dogshit set. It has evergreen potential imo.
i'd argue my keyword is superior in almost every regard. Exhaust brings no tension or decision making to a game. It adds no considerations to deckbuilding either. Even worse how WotC seemed fanatically devoted to making as many Exhaust abilities as possible no more than "Put +1/+1 counters on this, then do thing." WotC took a middling mechanic and executed it as boring as possible.

But in terms of facilitating interesting, impactful effects without having them be abusable? It's okay at that. If an Exhaust ability was ever too broken you could just flicker the creature to get it again, kind of defeating the point of having a keyword that's a safety valve. Having the check not tied to game object state gives you the benefit of that safety valve, without having it be trivially circumvented.

I think Exhaust was terribly executed and, having playtested a clone of it fairly well, among the worst versions of all possible similar effects.

WotC had to invent a fake format, "4 player pods" to even pretend at it being draftable.

Draw three cards, then discard any number of cards, then draw cards equal to the number of cards you discarded this way.

Fuck, I remember Zetalpa and how retards would play kill spells on it and be surprised that it didn't go anywhere. Had one guy cast Plummet on it twice (just in case the first one was a fluke).

Bagels vastly predate things like guns, which people on /tg/ complain are not included in MTG. People wanted thompsons in Capenna when Hot dog carts are about the same amount of recency. And Graham is a guy with a sandwich, which is not a new invention. Best you got is the ramen which wasn't done that way until the microwave.

I called it when they added the witch and warlock subtypes. Too much type granularity hurts the game. It's increasingly harder for cards from different sets to interact with each other. It's also flavor fail because the R&D doesn't plan on ever reusing those kind of types. So you get situations like these. This is example #45489 of why the game is getting worse.
