Thin your paints
wield your brush like a penis
and the most important bit is to wash your models like they're being baptized.
>>
>>96514137
Started in 4th Ed because the game still had soul and it was easier to get a game of 40K at some local shops than fantasy. Funnily enough that’s still why I play 40K minus the soul
>>
>>96514174
it will rarely come into play since pipes and small terrain features are not WTC, same with small 1-store ruins

>>
>>96514170
You'll probably want thinner highlights as your next step. So improved brush control which comes from practice, and less paint on the brush tip when highlighting.

>What edition did you start with, and why did you start?
4th edition and because of Dawn of War.
Originally i had painted my stuff as ultramarines i think because there was a guide to painting them in the sm codex? and i just followed it. Then when i was looking through the rule book some more, because i really liked reading it, i saw the black templars and loved them and repainted my army. I think it was this image specifically that made newly teen me go "this is the coolest thing ever"
Because I was 13 at the time, this meant I just painted over the already poorly painted blue.
It was shortly before the Black Templar codex dropped because I remember bringing my templars to my local GW and playing them and the manager telling me that BTs were getting a codex of their own in a few weeks and I was really excited for it and bought it when it came out.
I had a landraider crusader with metal parts that refused to stay on no matter how many times i superglued them
thank you for coming to my blog and also bringing back memories

4th edition dropped a month before DoW my man
Also i was wrong and it was the 3rd edition rule book i was looking through when i found the templars, i had bought an older one for some reason
I saw this and had flashbacks to sitting at my desk and painting directly from the pot, no thinning

I dropped out of the hobby near the end of 3rd (maybe early 4th? after the black crusade campaign they did) and only got back into it with 8th

>>
>>96514205
depends on what style you're looking for
>>
>>96514208
That is a feature, not a bug.
You paint in a smaller area each time and the thin paint gives a much less stark contrast to the highlights.
>>
>>96514208
Ah, I meant thinner as in the line is thinner, rather than the paint itself. More concentrated in a small line along the edge, less spilling out onto the flat panels. You can also do this by taking the flat panel colour and going over the highlight where it strays too far from the edge.

8th ed. My sister got into it because of her (now ex) boyfriend and because of how much she enjoys like working with DIY and painting tiny things stuff. I knew about 40k from a distance but when I saw her painting those khornate model kits I wanted to pick some up for myself because I already enjoyed gunpla beforehand and had enough hobby tools avaiable at home. Half of my friends group was also getting into 40k so it felt like a good decision to. I don't regret it one bit to be fair, I would if I wasn't smart with my purchases.

Something else to attach the 7 leaders that can be only attached to Plague Marines.
I don't know what, though. Plague Marines can already be run as shooty or melee. Maybe something like a dedicated tanky melee unit? PMs are kinda glass cannon-y (for DG's standards).

the champion you put in tacticus is also actually bladeguard and if the phobos medic can fill that spot then you can put the iron hand special character as the gravis techmarine, the sanguinary priest as the bladeguard apothecary, the wolf priest as spooky chaplain, a deathwing knight as terminator champion, the white scar character as captain on bike, the blood angel guy as jump pack chaplain
>>
Genestealer cults are so weird. Why did GW think them up? They fill an almost identical role to mortal chaos cults.
>>
>>96514362
Bloat is also bad because it eats resources that would be better spent on bloating something better, or updating something deserving.

Chaos or somthing i don't know
>>
>>96514362
>allows you to make better armies.
That's completely the opposite.
More combinations means there will be something that slips and it's too strong.
That force the balance team to nerf the faction, often hitting other things in the crossfire.

If you played for any reasonable amount of time you will remember plenty of times were a faction only had one or two viable lists because of that.

>Bloat is only bad if you don't have a good memory.
It completely overwhelms new players and casual collectors. Look at Stormcasts in AoS. The faction was meant to be the "new popolar guys" and it was completely inaccessible. New people were unable to make a viable lists because most of them required old characters and units you couldn't find.

So in 4th edition they were force to cull a huge amount of units and characters (some only a few years old), and veterans that had all of those were extremely angry, and rightfully so.

Too much stuff is bad for everybody, the new and the veteran.

Kys avatarfag.
>>
>>96514137
>What edition did you start with
8th
>and why did you start?
Because of Dawn of War. It took this much time for me to grow up and start earning money. It's why GW started doing so well suddenly, Dawn of War players finally started buying minis.
>>
>>96514376
Because 40k is a sci fi setting taking on a lot of modern and futuristic elements
shadows over innsmouth, alien, invasion of bodysnatchers are all fitting stuff to take inspiration from

chaos is too lame and fantasy

It's reddit behavior where people check everyone's post history to try to argue with them over things they said in the past instead of the current post itself. It's harmless on 4chan but it also doesn't really prove it was the same person either because there are no accounts, especially when people search by images because lots of people download the same image from the same source.
For example, half those ritual post he found in the archive could be from people copying it or quoting it in their own posts.

The miniature game with 8th ed. because it was actually manageable. I still believe that index 8th ed. was the best edition there ever was and I'll die on that hill (I have played games of 7th).

Into 40k I got many years earlier due to the FFG RPGs.

now I have a dozen armies and I am trapped in Stockholm syndrom hell.

Anon's image is more accurate because that is what 40k is about according to the creators.
Xenos are just a sideshow attraction and exist for target practise.

>What edition did you start with, and why did you start?

Kinda depends on what you mean "start with"
When did I first get involved in Warhammer/miniatures? Towards the end of 3rd Ed. 40k.
When did I first start to collect Warhammer 40000? A little after becoming interested in miniatures.
When did I first play Warhammer 40000? 4th Ed.

>why did you start?

I was a massive Lord of the Rings fan and had dreams of building a bunch of LotR stuff out of Lego. I was vaguely aware of Warhammer via White Dwarf and would some times flip through it in the News Agents. Mostly just for the LotR stuff because I thought Fantasy and 40k were just edgy goth shit.
Then one issue (286 off the top of my head) had a guide for to how to build a Barrow-Down barrow for LotR that I thought was really cool, so I bought it. I always loved sci-fi, but at the time I was going through a Fantasy phase, so my first foray into Warhammers was there. For Christmas that year I got some LotR minis and pic related. Over the next year my interest in fantasy (outside of LotR) waned and I got into 40k. A year or so after 4th Ed. released, I bought the Battle for McCragge box set and taught myself how to play.

With a few exemptions, I bought every issue of White Dwarf for the next 10 and bit years. I missed one (April 2010, I think) and when I realised it was no longer available for back order, so I figured I'd pick it up on eBay or something later. Then in early 2013 my dad died and everything else got pushed to the side. By the time I'd started to put myself back together I'd missed like 5 issues. I emailed GW Australia's customer support to ask them about getting back issues. They said they no longer did back issues, but asked for my address and what issues I was missing, just in case. A week later I received a parcel from GW which contained all the missing issues, including the one from 2010.

The creators made 40k without chaos, for the purpose of having stormtroopers and world wars soldiers fight against alien bugs, orcs with guns, killer robots, and space pirates.

To say the point of 40k is chaos is like saying the point of modern 40k is the leagues of votann.

A story only exists while you are reading it, and yet it still waits in a fixed order to be observed. A failure of experience does not imply a failure of existence. Predictable patterns emerge and can be extrapolated forward and backwards through both time and space.

Even the eternal now of the working memory is a mental composite of a time lapse of several moments of observation and mental predictions of expected information. You are already a creature that stretches forward and backwards through time in small struggling grasps for what is beyond your reach.

NTA, but, and I know this is a 'my dad works for nintendo' type post, a friend of mine who works for GW said the SoS had a bunch of sculpts that were being shown off in the studio a few years back, and were intended to follow after the Aquisitor release.
According to him, the decision to minimise resin releases and instead make mainstay kits in plastic is the reason they weren't released.
Also, Cust and SoS are a HH army, not 40k. Literally that is the team that works on them. Which is why they only get pity characters in 40k.
They can't get a big 40k release until they get a HH release, and in HH they are behind everyone else in the priority queue.

If I'm gonna get stuff at GW prices at least let it be delivered to my house AND count towards a voucher.

Question:

I'm just getting back into 40k after more then a decade out, and I could have sworn that they use to list who sculpted what miniature on their store pages back in the day, but they don't seem to know days.

Stratagems are awesome and there should be more rules that encourage interactivity between the players. Without them you can literally get up and walk away while their opponent does their turn. It actually gives you something to do and is a neat strategic decision as well as another dimension to give rules synergies to units and armies that's fun for people who actually like traditional games.

I'm kinda wondering if the Astartes animator will show Space Marines dying to anything. This teaser trailer is not actually clips from the new animation, instead showing a compilation of shots that represent the former lives of the characters that will appear in the show. There’s a pretty unsubtle hint at the end as to the nature of the final story... We’ll leave you to speculate and start putting the pieces together yourselves.

The thing is, the Imperial Guard isn't actually that numerous. The PDF picks from amongst the top 1% of the planetary population typically in terms of physical condition, and then the Imperial Guard picks from the top 1% of those. So by the time you actually get to the Imperial Guard, you're actually dealing with the top .01% of the Imperium's manpower.

But this isn't nearly enough to actually take care of the Imperium's manpower needs, which is why even the Imperium is dealing with manpower shortages. The Imperial Guard might be the worst of the basic grunts outside of Chaos Cultists and maybe Orks, but they're still drawn from a rather restrictive pool.

Astartes is pure marine wank and its okay since

>The marines were blue
>muh lore accurate marines!!!!

Marine wank is only hated if its boring book but if you show the masses an animation of it they get crazy
>>
>>96515203
Imperial guard are what you want them to be.
Most if not all regiments are inspired by armies or specific warrior/soldier individuals.

If you want a regiment that's smart leaders and stupid soldiers, you can.
If you want stupid leaders and smart soldiers, you can. You can even have smart both or stupid both.

Gross simplification
Cadians are WW2 (European fronts)
Krieg is WW1
Catachans are Rambo/Vietnam
Tallarn are SAS (WW2)/Bedouins
Praetorian Guard are British Colonial Troops, specifically that one movie.
Valhallans are WW2 soviets
Attilan Rough Riders are Huns
etc.

None of these are per say "lions led by donkeys" but you can make it so.
40k, especially the IG takes inspiration from military history, and a lot of military history is indeed littered with situations of great terrible sacrifice made by people only interested in their nepotism induced careers.

Real talk but how was astartes marine wank?
They fought 3 things:

Guardsmen with autogun which are established very early to be a non-threat, the most dangerous they got was that twin multi-laser, the marine didn't even dive or duck, he got peppered and went behind the corner, which for all we know was just to get cover for his own blind/photon grenade.

Those two psykers, who were really close to getting the best of the marines. The psykers themselves created the opening that got them killed.

Then the warp-creature thing that ended up taking them all to their original dimensions (if I remember what the creator said).

The creature got killed by some other warp creature as it tried to jump to safety.

How is that wank? They didn't even fucking win.

The wank in the Astartes animation is okay because they're fighting cultists with nothing but stubbers. 99.9% of the enemies they fight in those animations are literally incapable of killing them because they have absolutely nothing capable of getting through their armor.

However, if they start showing the other factions, such as the Tau, whose Pulse Rifles are stronger than bolters, and they're STILL not dying at all to the enemy...then yeah, that will be pretty dumb.
>>
>>96515259
The problem with that is even the top .01% of Humans, even if given a proper loadout, is not going to be able to compete well with even basic xenos troops.
Ork Boyz?
They're tough enough to headbutt Marines just for a laugh, and can casually rip a Guardsman in half with their bare hands.
Eldar Guardians?
They move faster than Marines, shoot as well as Marines even while on the move, and tote around razor guns which have a significant chanve of taking down a Marine in one quick volley.
Nid Gaunts?
For every Guardsman there's three Gaunts of every flavor, and they can repopulate MUCH faster.
Necron Warriors?
Capable of shrugging off small to medium arms fire, has a weapon that will eviscerate a human in one shot, and has a nasty habit of not staying down once shot.
Fire Warriors?
Closest you get to Guard, and they have a way better loadout to work with
Guard aren't there to win battles against xenos, they're there to buy time and fill in gaps for the rest of the Imperium.
>>

The autocanon hit the pauldron, the part deliberately designed to redirect hits. And marines didn't stand and tank them - the ones under fire continued moving out of the range of the gun, the others stopped before entering it.
And multilaser is a fucking anti-infantry gun anon, it's not gonna "melt" ceramite armor. Do you not know why ceramite is used for armor in the first place? And the marine tried to take out the gunners, noticed they have armor, took cover and used a chaff grenade to prevent them from hitting him again.
These are the absolute worst examples to take issue with.

>Eldar Guardians?
>They move faster than Marines, shoot as well as Marines even while on the move, and tote around razor guns which have a significant chanve of taking down a Marine in one quick volley.
there's a story (written by Elfdari master Gav Thorpe) where the eldar attack a fortified imperial world (I dont remember why) but they attack a fortress manned by Valhallans (I believe) and the eldar lose hundreds in the attack (there's a funeral scene afterwards). The Eldar were not doing anime backflips through platoons of guardsmen moving faster than the eye to see

Kinda meme understanding going on here because guard have been known to take on xenos all the time without marines showing up. but since the focus on this game is on marines they HAVE to show up 99% of the time.

This magical dipshit is my first real attempt at a kitbash where I had to do more than just cut straight down a wrist to swap a hand, and it's turning out a bit better than I expected. He doesn't have the wide bulk of a typical chaos marine, which I think helps him stand out as a sorcerer, and I was concerned the helmet would look oversized but it seems ok. The little bits of Tamiya putty I'm using seem to want to stick to my tools a lot more than my model even if I dip them in water first, which is annoying. The boltgun wrist is really ugly right now but I'm going to let it cure/dry and then hit it with my files to blend it down.
>>
>>96515350
When you have Space Marines showing up in large numbers for even minor crusades against tiny xenos factions I think it's fair to say that the Imperial Guard is largely just to hold the enemy in place long enough for the Space Marines to arrive. Sure sometimes they win on their own but very frequently they need help even for small actions.
>>
>>96515259
>then the Imperial Guard picks from the top 1% of those.
That's not how it works, the Guard doesn't pick. Each planet raises their own regiments. And for a lot of those planets, the main thing is hitting the required number of bodies.

Rise of the Ynnari was a product of trying to have Eldar stand on their own. It failed because GW opted to not lean in to the Guilliman/Yvraine dynamic and instead tried to make Yvraine a standalone character.
Nobody cares about 'standalone' elf women. Their inherent value is in how they interact with humans.
>>
>>96515738
>But they still did Ynnari exactly as anon suggested, they made into Imperial Eldar.
They didn't, Ynnari couldn't be allied into Marines and they tried to make the Ynnari separate. Their failure was in trying to make the Ynnari independent.

When I played Middlehammer as a kid, everyone would leave their destroyed tanks and vehicles on the table and put thematic smoke and fire effects on them.

How come you never see this anymore? There is zero thematic elements in modern 40k, people just remove the tank from the table once it's healthy bar has run out, it just "disappears" from the battlefield.

What gives?

I started around 4e I reckon because my friends were into it and I found it cool. Of course as a broke teenager it was very difficult and that's why we interacted with the hobby mainly through talking about it and thinking about how we'd play rather than actually playing since none had enough for an actual army.
Then I stopped paying attention around 6th and came back towards the tail end of 8e. I saw DG had become an army and by 9E I jumped back into it with the same friends, we now actually have money for armies and play 1 or 2 games a month.

People make fun of it but it's perhaps the naming convention that makes the most sense. Compare to the Raven Guard who somehow earned their name before meeting their primarch, who just happened to have been given the name Corvus by the locals of his world, which also just so happened to match perfectly with the title Corax he was given later in life to create the reading of Corvus Corax, the Latin name for common ravens, which was in turn a perfect match for the Raven Guard legion named for its raven black armor.

Speaking from only index gameplay knowledge and having only read the votann codex rules (my first game of the codex is tomorrow), you're too character heavy and should replace a unit of Hearthkyn and a sagitaur with something else. Thunderkyn are extremely good right now while Hearthkyn and sagitaurs are both rather bad. At the moment you'll struggle to kill anything, especially tougher Marines which DA excel at using.

if only having marines vs marines exist then just play HH

Honestly that's just disappointing.

But Eldar are annoying to fight and aren't cool. If I'm going to fight something I want them to be cool.
>>

i see, alas i was mostly going off from the release army set and while i know losting scout on sagitaurs sucks i was planning to eventually go into Brandfast and there having auras of sustained 1 for infantry seemed good enough to get 2 of them. Thuderkyn, 2 hekatombs, likely another 6-brick of jacks but with swords would be my 2k expansion

>whinging about dark angels
they're one of the worst armies in the game, they could bring the lion and DWK and still lose

If you're going into the transport detachment thunderkyn are seemingly built for it in the codex. You'll want 3 units of them and 2 landforts with some sagitaurs as a start for it.
>>
what made Dark Angels so compelling to GW to have them as one of the main non codex compliant chapters?
>>

Imagine being told you can play as the city of Innsmouth but with Maad Max/Alien aesthetics, and not thinking this is the coolest shit ever.

king arthur shit
they're the bretonnia analogue in 40k

Some guy in the late 80's/early 90's thought they were cool and decided to sculpt some models for them.

I compiled a bunch of female gsc models bits so I can print a unit of female neophyites but my friends printer broke before he could print all the legs and heads. I ended up kitbashing the rest with leftover bits and the results have been pretty good so far.
>>
>>96516614
not really though
they only sorta have the look down but that doesn't really reflect in their lore aside from their primarch and origins
i mean their chapter master is the angel of death, not some kind of nights of the round analogue
what would happen if their chapter master was Saber?
>>
>>96516645
>Spoiler
Instead of hunting fallen they'd spend their time hunting for burgers.
>>
>>96516645
I think you misunderstood why he has the First Angel of Death epithet
anyways, dark angels are all about secret knight shit, fighting a hidden enemy, the Lion can "forest walk" like the Green Knight
it's all very Arthurian
>>
>>96516612
I agree with the anons about the faction being expensive. I was going to stay at 1000pts forever until I came across a deal where the guy dumped 700pts worth of stuff for 45% of GW's MSRP, still on sprue so basically brand new.
>>
>>96516174
nids are boring as fuck
GSC are ludokino
>>
>>96516673
honestly i feel like the dark angels and black templars should have their names switched
historically templars were known for their secretive ways that pissed off kings.
and all space marines are basically "angels" of the emperor, but the black templars are some of the most brutal of his "angels"
>>
>>96514739
GSC are more like gene-givers desu
>>
>>96516676
No both are based an cool.
>>
>>96516689
How about renaming them into black angels and dark templars?
>>
>>96516689
it started out as a tongue in cheek joke about a gaybar called The Rock, and the gay poet Lionel Johnson wrote a poem about his desire for his Dark Angel
