FIRST FOR WARHAMMER
>>96522098Any theme, pretty much. Historical stuff is fine (Twilight/Imperial), but so is fantasy (WotR). It's just that the war on terror is kind of a lame theme IMO. But I'd be happy to be proven wrong on that.>>96522125Could you shill me on it a little bit more? How does it play, why is it better than TS?

>>96522394Doubt it. The way splotter games work, they do a big print run and never again. What we're seeing now are all the businesses who speculated on HC and bought many, many copies are now having to offload at a discount because the uncertain business environment is preventing them from holding this bag So, if you want HC, buy now before it starts showing up on ebay for $200+

>>96522932I'm not autistic enough to answer this with confidence but I've heard a lot about it. It's a nonhistorical 18xx that allegedly is both beginner friendly yet has most of what makes 18xx games and also a reasonable (~4h) playtime. Plus vastly varying setup, so there's no standard opening moves etcI think I'll risk it, then leave it unplayed on the shelf for 8 years

Look up reviews, it's hard to explain. Major pro: they cover weird conflicts that no other game does>Cold War'85 Afghanistan. Card driven skirmish game Saigon 75 is a cube game, set after the Americans have bailed. >????Meltwater. Cold War goes hot and the last survivors fight over Antarctica. Unlike other wargames, the map is actively getting smaller as radiation encroaches. 2040 American Insurrection is....interesting. Part of the game is on the map, part of the game is on the internet (not literally. No digital component to this game)I've skipped Napoleonics, ACW, and WW2 because I'm sure you can find a list of those if you look around
Oath expansion is sounding pretty hot
>>96522932it's closer to 18XX with the way companies and route-building is handled, but has a few convenience features, such as (optional) variable map built by players at the start each game, share prices being simplified, each company has it's own unique ability, and you can mix and match those abilities after a merger. the expansion that's getting the kickstarter right now adds a few optional modules and extra companies to the mix, pretty solid for the price but not really a must-have. Thankfully they offer a "base game only" pledge level if you wanna spend less.

>>96523509>>96523369You should be able to get a game of Railways in anytime you want to. I've played pretty close to 30 times since it came out with train gamers and midweight euro gamers. Never been a problem getting it to the table. It's a very operational game so euro players like it - you win by building and running good networks and blocking the shit out of others. The stock stuff is straight forward, trashing isn't really a thing like other 18xx games. The modular maps make the game really fun and make floating matter. I played the expansion on TTS and it's not game breaking but adds some stuff to make the maps a little more interesting. It does away with all the nonsense stuff that other 18xx games suffer from and has side benefit of being shunned by traditional 18xx'ers so you don't have to socialize with them and can have fun instead of watching autists count and recount tracks for 10 bucks.
>>96523516>>96523057>>96523476I liked Oath a lot and thought it needed a bit of clean up to make the gameplay more interesting, I thought a new expansion could add some things but I didn't think it'd introduce ground up reworks of the ENTIRE gameI went from kind of being interested to EXTREMELY interested. I didn't read the whole book yet however.

There are event cards that cause changes to the map each turn. Just more variety really. The expansion doesn't fix the 18xx issues, RoLA does. Getting rid of stupid stuff like floating a company and having to wait to run, effectively dropping your stock price for no reason during the first OR, train export (I honestly don't know why every game doesn't do this), non-scripted starting moves based on minor, etc.

>>96524361Depends - there are 3 modes: short, long, bank variant. Short game is 4 turns and long game is 6 turns and takes about 45m-1hr per player unless someone goes bankrupt. Bank variant removes the turn limit and sets a bank break condition like in traditional 18xx games. I think it's $8000 so it's not too much longer than a 4 turn game.

You can try asking for places to get PT on the ION Games official discord.I played it a few times. The game is pretty interesting and unique, also has lots of replayability. What's really astounding is the amount of game they managed to cram into a pocket sized box. It's worth having just for the incredible game to footprint ratio.
>>96526721Only played ren, transhumanity, viking and hispanica. I'd put hispanica right next to or even a little bit better than ren. Pax viking is the best entry level pax game since it's not very eklund-y.
>>96526730>What's really astounding is the amount of game they managed to cram into a pocket sized boxYes, it's insane. Pretty heavy and complex game in such a small box. I've never seen anything like it.
>>96526737>hispanicaYou like hispanica? I remember anons here being pretty negative on it. Why do you like it?
>>96526632Which ones do you already have?
>>96526780It's a great story teller, generative of very fun, memorable moments. It's extremely thematic (one of my favourite themes too), and it's just generally fun to roleplay as someone making a name for themselves in the pirate era. It's basically sid meier's pirates!Mechanic wise, I like the deep asymmetry, the various viable playstyles, the way haven cards work with interdiction and burried treasure mechanics, and especially how everything you do affects the philosophy board, causing potential personal run-ins with other players, duelling etc. The promos/expansions also add tons of replayability (if it wasn't already very replayable), new scenarios and new ways to play basically. IMO if you have more than two braincells and like pax games in general and pirate games in particular, this is probably the best pirate game at the moment. I'd rate it a 8 ish only because it is indeed a little dense rules-wise and hard to teach.
>>96526787Everything except Ortus Regni and Nawalli.
>>96526852Best player count for Hispanica?
>>96526888I only played 3p unfortunately, I couldn't tell you how it scales with higher or lower player counts, so my above review (>>96526852) is I guess for 3p games.
Blood Rage or Inis, bgg brethren?
>>96526632>Pax TranshumanityGive me the QRD. Why do you like it so much?
>>96526940As I've said, the biggest strong point it has is that I can have a full, dense, boardgame in my backpocket. I haven't played it in a while, but I remember that the way the economy works coupled with the viability mechanic creates interesting decisions for you to make. Another nice thing is that, in classic pax game fashion, there is almost no hidden information, and when there is, it's the same hidden information for every player. It's remarkable that being as small as it is, it manages to kinda stand its own ground against huge games like dune imperium. However, if you're travelling and only have tiny space for boardgames, but you're also autistic, I don't think there's any other game I'd take.

>>96527265Sure, here you go.https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2926256/glory-to-rome-the-micro-editionI spent the entire day printing, glueing, cutting everything with a guillotine and then sleeving, but it was extremely worth it. I've now played almost 20 games across different groups and it's always been a hit. I should pnp it again after I streamline and improve my card printing process, as cutting by hand at a guillotine still yields imperfect results as you can see in pic related
>>96527340What do you mean imperfect, looks fine
>>96527336That's another thing, it can get a little chronophagous, but if your group is well disciplined, invested in the game, and you have someone quickly doing the Goods Year (where stuff appears on the map etc), I think a game can realistically end in 2h, maybe a bit more. You are going to have to soldier through the dense rulebook the first time around though, and that will take a while, and it's not really a breeze to teach either. So definitely not a "short" game, but it can be decent if your group is based. Mine isn't, but they did enjoy the game and we had the entire day to spare.
>>96527353The cards don't all have the exact same height and width, and the sleeves are too long. I have been putting off trimming the sleeves for ages but I can't be arsed to.
>>96527340I've been guillotining cards for years. Stick a phone light under the paper at the cutting line and never miss.I use a procxy generator tool I found on itch that automatically puts a mm line of padding between cards so it's easier to cut them if they look similar edge to edge.

>>96526721Porfiriana at 1, Pamir at 3, Pax Illuminaten (its not really a Pax game) at 4.
18XX games are bogged down by operating phases. Lets be honest people like these games for the stock round manipulation and then operating phases begin and its just fiddly, mathy, largely solved monotony that pads the playtime into 4+ hours. Operating should be streamlined into something like Russian Railroads or Bus.
The time is the biggest flaw of 18xx games. When the shortest games are 3-4h at best you are limited to a niche crowd. That might not be bad.Pax Illuminaten is one where it looks interesting enough but because it not a "traditional" pax game and the theme is so uninteresting to me I can't decide if I should get it.
>>96527916Its long length + cruchy, perfect information gameplay that makes it so hard. Nobody cares that TI4 takes 8 hours to finish cause its largely a random luckfest bullshit so nobody at the table is stressed. 18xx literally requires a calculator.
>>96527869I beg to differ. I like the operating rounds as much as the stock rounds
>>96527942>TI4I doubt many people actually play TI4. One a year or something. There's probably more regular 18xx player than TI player. But yes there are people that have trouble counting past 100 and their "head hurts" if they have to sum three two digit numbers.
>>96526721I prefer Renaissance to Pamir but i can see how the latter got higher reviews with general audiences. Less rulles frontloading means less time between start of learning (which is not fun) and making decisions properly and strategically (which is fun) meaning more fun per session.
>>96526619Monopoly with expansions
I'm addicted to summoner wars, here are the spoilers for the upcoming factions. Drakesun dragons, remake of the guild dwarves from 1st edition, there's a remake of the deep dwarves from 1st coming, a fucking squirrel faction(wtf), and a turtle faction
Got my hands on the second edition of Castles of Mad King Ludwig game and I'm incredibly impressed with how well designed this insert is. Every type of piece has a spot that's clearly labeled and easily accessible even when fully loaded thanks to finger tabs. They're sturdy enough that you can pull them out and use them on the table should you wish to.They easily fit back into the box without having to cram anything. Also, the box has been designed so that the expansions can fit inside of it too.PicrelWhy can't all games be like this bros?
>>96528204Would unironically prefer just having everything float around untethered if it meant the box size can be halved
>>96527869The operating phases is what makes 18XX more than just a stocks game. By tying the share price to a players' actual ability to play the game it forces you to make actual choices on what to invest into. And sure, with static maps the first two rounds for each corp are always "get to closest city space and start making dosh with your 2-train" but some companies won't get started every game, meaning not all of the map will be developed and networked for the midgame, meaning whoever can adapt best to this will have the highest share price growth. But if you invest too far into a company the owner might just dump it on you by selling all the new trains he bought with your investment, buying some old about-to-rust train from his second corp, and selling his shares to the bank to make you president of a huge liability.Though streamlining it into something like Bus might work too, actually, if done properly.>>96527942>18xx literally requires a calculatorIt's adding single digit numbers together to a total of like 40 or 60 max then giving that much per number of shares to each player. if you have trouble with 3rd grade level math you might wanna brush up on the old material, if you don't wanna be called a retard that is. I'd understand if you were angry at actually math heavy games like Leaving Earth but there math is expected because it's literally rocket science.

>>96528380I didn't like the art at first, but the gameplay made me get used to it
>>965284322e can also fit in a small box, you can use cards to lay out the map
>>96528233On one hand if you go for the expansion then at least you won't have two big boxes on your shelf eating up space or have to deal with awkwardly squeezing the expansion into the base game. But if you don't have the expansion then yeah there's no denying the box eats up more space than it should. >>96528264>that you could organize just as well (if not better) in the box with a ~$2 plano or counter tray.I very much doubt you could organize this better with that setup. I'm not sure about that. But I'm open to being proven wrong if any anon wants to post their homebrew solution (hard mode: it doesn't use a 3D printed insert).>Because the MSRP is ~$70 for a game that should be ~$40 or lessWhat if I told you I bought it on Walmart.com for $32.74? >>96528503Flashpoint is just such a dull game. Move two times and put out a fire, then spend the next five minutes adding tokens to the board. The only thing more boring than waiting for other players to end their turns is waiting for other players to end the game's turns.

>>96528654Like other anon said. A game with a bunch of factions that play surprisingly different to each other go head to head dueler style. You can teach the game in 3 minutes, but the depth is there. The fun part is how asymmetrical the factions are, you can pick one up and play it over and over again to figure out its nuances. The faction your playing becomes the puzzle along with how to defeat your opponent. Theres quite a bit of content out for it, but I'd recommend getting a deck(after the starter box, ofc) that piques your interest. It really feels like the greatest hits of a ccg with premade decks, although there is a whole deck building element that I don't really care about. The dice are the most divisive part of the game as some players say that wiffing could make or break your game, but honestly with how many attack rolls are in a game (30-40?) it averages outRecommend checking out the online version.
>>96528802>That kind of autismusually it deserves the top 3 spots, unless the autism forces the autist to write an e-mail to the game's author clarifying the rules inconsistency which then leads to FAQ documents or a revised rulebook, then the autism is alright.
>>96528827Autism is autism. You can use it for good or you can use it for evil, it's still the same thing.
>>96528079>start of learning (which is not fun)I completely disagree with this statement but I know I'm in the minority.
>>96528847>with great autism comes great responsibility
>>96528986I will concede that my phrasing was maybe not the best, the point is turning gameplay levers around with no goal nor intent is less fun than knowing what you're doing and taking actions with full or even partial intent, and the latter doesn't happen immediately when you first open the box and set the game up. Accidentally blocking someone's route for the first time in Hansa Teutonica might be something you don't realize as a good thing until a few rounds later, but after you realize that you start intentionally blocking routes until you learn how much is too much and when to start focusing on your own gameplan.

>>96528712I do think the expansions helped. The ones that added different players gives flavor and makes people feel like they're doing their part. I have fun memories of being the truck water gun dude and hosing down an area so a paramedic could run in and heal some people. After that the rescue dog came in and led them all out in one fell swoop. The Tragic Events expansion made the game better too as you didn't have to fiddle around with those obnoxious hot spots anymore. Flip a card and resolve the effects. All that aside, I busted it out again recently after not having played it for a while with some players who hadn't tried it before and it fell flat. It was late and I should've picked something quicker, but part of me wonders if I've outgrown it. It'll be a tough one to sell for me if that's true. It was one of the earliest games I bought when I got back into board gaming again in ~2013.

>>96532046Cuba Libre is supposed to be the starter game, but skip it. Honestly, skip it. The map can cause people to turtle and then nothing happens. If you have very aggressive players who aren't scared of getting outside their comfort zone it might be fine, but so many players when confronted by a new and semi-complicated system will play defensive and then Cuba Libre falls apart. If you want a single game to get people in, I'll shill Liberty or Death>whySome COIN games have genuinely ugly maps. Looking at you All Bridges Burning. If you have hex and chit players then the map won't matter. But let's be real: so many people in the board gaming space need visuals to get invested, and Liberty or Death has a pretty map. It helps. And mechanically, it's the COIN game with the most flexible player count. Most COINs truly demand four people, Liberty or Death can be played with three because France is easy to bot. The other entry point you could consider is The British Way or (probably) the upcoming Guerilla Generation>whyBecause they're a dedicated 1v1 experience. Find the one dude in your group who's willing to give it a shot, teach him, and deputize him to help introduce more people to COIN The COIN in French Algeria is also 1v1 but it's designed more like the rest of the franchise. It's not a bad game, make no mistake, but it's a lot longer and harder to teach than The British Way >natural caveat: if you have history nerds in your group, then you can make any COIN work if they care about the conflict. Vietnam nerds can jump right into Fire in the Lake and get hooked, but if they aren't vietnam nerds? Fire in the Lake is LONG and will be a hard sell
>>96532063Depending on what they liked about Catan, try La Famiglia or Rising Sun, or whatever Lang game you preferLa Famiglia is a fair bit more complicated than Catan but it'll feel familiar in terms of the board.Lang games meanwhile really win on presentation and with the usual planning/action phase split you can have people feel successful and get invested even if they never win a battle.

>>96533338>>96533248>>96532969I am not sure if there is some kind of biomarker for boardgame aptitude, maybe some anon who has a public group can tell us something about this.My experience is that you really can't tell other than by feeling. Formal education is not that useful, I've had my full time barista friend go from zero to Ti with no issue, I've had fellow academics not get Secret hitler after the fifth game. You never truly know until you've tried, but I maintain that gateway games are kinda gay and unstatisfying for everyone
>>96533017>CompaniaIt looks like a game that might be very random and it might lead to some bad games. That was my impression from their gameplay video.
>>96533427I haven't played it but I head positive things.
>>96532982Just from the logo I mistook it for Mindclash games and was gonna ask about Trickerion since it looks like their most highly rated game. But these guys are like you mentioned constantly shilled on the dice tower. They regularly have full playthroughs of their new games there.
>>96533017>Sweet LandsI've played 2-3 times this week on tts to get a feel and I don't think it's worth it, the game feels like a chore, it's... well basically terra mystica except everyone has their own map>Amalfihow's it? i've noticed a surge of copies coming out in the second-hand market... and all of them are in french>Ostiastill haven't seen a single copy of this one, but I think i'll try this one next, it looks interesting

>>96532369Up to 4 but playing well at two would be ideal. I have 4 who claim to want to play, but they're flaky. The guaranteed attendees are me and my wife. I was thinking of getting Agricola or La Havre. I don't have any Uwe games and I like agricola. AffO was ok but I didn't like it as much as gric. La Havre also looks interesting but no one here has it to try it out.Anyway I was checked the new version of Agricola and it looks like a mess. They made it with this realistic art style and I don't like it as much. Maybe I just got too used to the goofy but charming old aesthetic. Besides the art they cram everything into this new edition. All the cards, Farmers of the more + base game is the smallest you can get. Who needs all those cards? Plus they have a cardboard version of resources? It raised over 5,8 mio euros, who buys this??
>>96533650if you dont mind a game that will take 3 hours or more (at least for the first few plays) then Le Havre is the superior choiceOtherwise you can stick with Agricola which is still a great game
>>96533650Hobbyist boardgamers are chronic consoomers
After playing a bit more I changed my mind on Five Tribes, it's actually a very deep game with interesting strategic opportunities
>>96532982I've played a handful of their games(Veiled Fate, Moonrakers, Moonrollers, and Brink). None of them are good designs. They usually fence sit too hard and try to round the edges off heavy designs or add euro/asymmetric mechanics to light games that aren't fun or have text so tiny that you require binoculars to internalize the board state.
>>96527022wouldnt be easier to buy gosu x instead of these? Gosu X seems a more refined version. also would buy Epic or Eternal Chronicles if you really want to but more than one card game.
>>96522542Came to this thread because I wanted to ask about Modern Art. Thinking of buying it and I know it's generally liked by posters on this thread. How often do you bring it out on game nights? What is the main draw of the game?
>>96534094The amusement and cunning comes from riding that fine line of gaining without giving too much away.
>>96528233I own Middara. Lets skip that part what you think of the game . It has tons of different tokens markers and cards. Bought fan made 3D boxes to store things separately still able to use them "relatively" quickly whenever needed. Using zip bags and grouping cards with rubbers would take 1000 times more to use and would make both setup and tear down also ingame a nightmare. using zip bags for smaller amount of groups of ingredient might work but even there sometimes you could just win a lot of precious time when you dont need to handle separate bags flying around. Your opinion is perfectly valid as well but I think the amount of time and effort and pain could be save with the right inserts (original or custom made). Also with a smart inserts you end up using still less space than zip bags due to they are grouped and ordered, the space is precisely used instead of depending how lucky you are currently to flatten the token piles in bags on top of each other.
>>96528523Agree since 98% of the time no much planning regarding box inserts and mostly the inserts not even functioning properly while eating up too much space. But card board inserts in this matter are no different either.
>>96532994Stock fuckery>>96533588Falling Sky, then, I think it's as good as FitL at 4 and better at 2.
>>96534094I bring it out surely once every 4 or so sessions, and we've always have a lot of fun with it. If you have any interest in auction games at all, you'll like it 99%. If I was at gunpoint I'd say a problem the game has is that suprise-ending a round with the double play cards can be a bit faggy but it's something you can play around if you know.Main draw is hyping up Karl "The grid man" Gitter with all your might and let your opponents massively overpay for them. It is so funny how easy it is for people to fall into the trap of 'it'll be worth 30k, so paying 25k is a steal!" and forgetting they paid YOU 25k. I'll add that it is suprisingly thematic for a knizia, almost accidentally so.pic related had a friend improvise a 5 minute story about Karl Gitter painting it to process his experiences in Ausschwitz (obviously as a warden). I still laugh whenever this painting comes up

They're not children and I want to keep them thinking.Having an understandable theme (even if it doesn't appeal to them, although that helps) is the most important thing, because otherwise they can't build a mental model of the game, and everything feels arbitrary. Also, avoid games with components that people have to learn/know about, so no Agricola, there are too many cards to explain.Brass is actually great for introducing, because the cards are easily explained, and the thing that's not intuitive is connected vs in-network, but the first couple times that comes up people get it

>>96534138Oh don't worry I'm not a purist that's going to pretend all inserts are shit. Sometimes (eg. Civolution) even the storage solution that comes with the game is very good. But usually, I find them annoying or unnecessary. At a certain amount of different components it'd really quicken setup, though.
>>96534736>But I think most of his time is spent asking chatgpt game design questionsUnironically could see that.>Give me (he'd never say please to a non-monority) an idea for a game that's never been tried. It should have a lot of artwork and nearly zero interaction between the players. There also should not be any feelbad mechanics, eg. ones where you are punished or must pay resources without gaining anything.>Vantage.jpg
>>96533427It's not bad. Seems like it was designed game first and the theme was applied later in development. The tempo of how fast other people are going after bounties matters a lot If they're going fast the deckbuilding element will be fairly orthodox because it needs time to spin up an interesting engine, but I'm someone who thinks the deckbuilding in popular deckbuilders like Dune:Imperium is bland. One thing I like about it is that it has some very minor semi-coop elements and that's just seems rare mechanically. There's another Cowboy Bebop game which is pure coop that captures the spirit of the show thematically a lot better (e.g., constantly fending off starvation) but some people think it's anticlimactic because ultimately you're racing to fulfill a recipe before time runs out.
>>96535246Good to know. I don't know if it'd compete with my other deck builders, but it's charming enough. Looking to see if it does anything standout or not. Still undecided on if I want to get it

>>96535601Accepting review copies is irrelevant You really think getting a $60 game is enough to sway an opinion for what amounts to at least 15 hours of work (learning rules, playing game at least once, probably 2-3 times, creating script, recording, editing, etc.). >>96535730It turned out alright, actually. Tried using a toothbrush to actually brush off the primer, but it was a bit toilsome. Any better tools?
>>96535798You are DEFINITELY dealing wrong because those players should not have 8 cards. In a 4 player game each player is dealt 7 cards and 4 cards are set aside. The remaining 4 cards are only dealt out as "hand" cards once everyone commit the order of their sorted rows. The suits of t 4 cards et aside are known while sorting the rows but who gets which of the 4 cards is randomized after the rows are committed.
>>96536036>In a 4 player gameAnon... There are 3 players seated there.
>>96536052You're right. I thought anon was the cyan player but I see now he's orange and no one is cyan. 8 cards are correct for 3 players.
>>96535601I can respect it in terms of integrity (not like review copies are in any way equivalent to the 2k contracts KS slop ''''''''''reviewers'''''''''' sign to only say positive things about the product) but that helps little if he's one of the worst faggots in the industry
>>96535798There's still a point to be made that the suits of the 4 possible hand cards should be on display. You can see 1 is a black card and you can count the dealt cards to deduce that the other 3 are blue cards, but the rules say to make it easy to see.
>>96536136I'll get to it. I should've specified that I'm done with image editing, now I'm just scripting it. I haven't even done the central cards yet. Thanks anon.

>>96535636idk the issue for me is that reviewers are only focusing on shit that was served to them. I'd rather they genuinely sought out the game and invested in it, so there's no hint of bias. Even if they were just being treated to dinner or drinks I would think it's cringe. the review copy is even worse. >>96533650Worse was all the comments saying they'd buy the new version despite having 80% of the decks already That said it does the sole thing people wanted from the 15 year 'anniversary' - have all the decks - so you should be able to find it decently cheap if you can't find a used Revised edition. The inserts aren't nearly as bad as people made it out to be
>>96537633I agree on space biff, everyone pretends like he's some writing savant, and I just don't see itPlus I've seen him gush over mediocre games too many times to trust anything he promotes
I'm starting to think I'm falling into the midwit curve for Tash. It feels both too random and tactical of a game while also being insanely complex and strategic. Like even if I memorized every shape - hell even used a cheat sheet and crossed off my opponents cards - there's just so many layers to account for that I feel like the game does but doesn't want me to. Don't flood the board to fast, but do set up your next move, but don't get yourself pushed into a corner, oh btw you should have stopped their titan you know that shape don't you, too late their piece moved 3 spaces and you forgot that includes diagonalsIt's not a bad a time, but I can't say I walk away feeling smart

>>96537633>unless he's lying in his videos, he buys all the games they reviewI just checked and in his latest video he says they generally don't accept review copies - this one obviously was.Anyway review copies don't matter for his channel as speed is not their niche, they make long "essay" style videos. On the opposite side you have Dice tower which covers the speed and wide spread of games. But you do realize that most of these reviewers go to conventions and mingle with designers and other people in the industry. When they become big enough they get connections and become connected. Whether that compromises their opinion is up to you to decide.
>>96537767>space biff,I don't get his writing style, same with Wehrle. They write like movie reviewers. I just can't connect with their writing, it seems they put alot into the style and meaning wile missing some of the simple things. If feels like writing that is meant for other reviewers that have played the game / watched the movie. It reminds me of that video of Anabel Holland shitting on Dice tower about boardgames being art and not toys.
>>96537767>>96538718I've never seen anyone except the most pretentious of redditors come out with a positive opinion about ol' 'biffy>videowhich one is this? sounds funny. boardgames are obstentially toys but obviously some crazy retard who stole their ex groomer wife's last name probably cant stand that idea

I don't get who they're useful for
>>96538763>>96538718>>96537797I've initially found his prose very annoying and stuck up as well, but don't much mind it. He does give a good writeup in the susd style which I have come to heavily dislike - largely emotional. Mechanics, plays, theme - everything is about how things feel and how the narrarive structure is. Which is nice and all to get a ähm, feeling for a game but not helpful at all in my decision if I'll like it. I remember reading his la famiglia reviews (was one of the few out at the time I looked into it) and a good part of the review was about how the theme is in poor taste and ignores the history and yadda yadda, you know what comes up, the only suprise is that it doesn't magically segue in something about the evils of colonialism. He also then forgets to mention how the game is really fun.But that's his style and enough people dig it. I am left to wonder if he is some sort of person of worship for the wannabe intellectual or if his essays really say what people can't put into words. I think he's a nice dude with something interesting to say but oh my is his content faggy
>>96538873>I don't get who they're useful forQuite possibly people who aren't interested in rants about colonialism, boobs = bad and the diverese cast of -isms you need to be aware of to not make the mistake of judging [game] by it's gameplay. But yeah, other than vasel content I think tdt is a pretty meh

>>96538965Haha. What a retard. Toys are art anyway, I don't get the issue.>>96538940'Biff definitely comes off as a sort of "opinion god" that you find in all sorts of media reviewers. >>96538873>he bought the game from Kickstarter and got a loaner copy to shoot in the meantimeWho did he get the "loaner copy" from? And how? Because he has connections in the industry. And in the video he directly stated that they generally don't use review copies which means that sometimes (rarely) they do. But that doesn't matter. The point is that he has connections to the industry, he mingles with designer etc. so he is not completely independent. Doesn't mean he is a shill and it's nice that he tries to be as independent as possible.>Dice Tower is like a content mill. I don't get who they're useful forThat's their model. They review more games in a week that many reviewers do in a year. They rely on as many games and to have the review out as sons as possible. On the other side you have reviewers that do 10 games a year and they produce long detailed videos but they come out after the games is already out for some time.If only essay reviewers existed you would get reviews for max 20 games and that's it.
We should do a /bgg/ video review channel network

>>96538998definitely it's due to his clout and networking at a convention. he just reads to me as somewhat more principled than other reviewers. agree with his critique or not; I respect that aspecti just don't see what dice tower brings to the table over the numerous podcasts that discuss their impressions of games. do people just need that score out of 10?
>>96538998There's also the SUSD style review; like 30 videos a year yet somehow most of them feel like they've played the game 1-3 times at mosta snd 90% of the effort is spent on coming up with metaphors with a twist>It's like actually being spiderman, but the buildings are nazis an your webs is efficient administration
>>96539023>do people just need that score out of 10?I mean ideally it boils down a longer read to a super quick to process number, but if every game starts at 7 unless it is exceedingly bad, scoring loses its meaning
