If I wanted to paint some tanks in a manner close to this, but more thick tiger stripey and with a lighter gray, which faction would it represent best? Preferably Inner Sphere because there’s more figures available.
>>
>>96525155
Grey and brown says Lyrans, Tiger stripes says Capellans or Combine. Literally everyone has mostly "uses camo appropriate to the environment" units

Gonna get a game in with the playtest rules this weekend. Also, I've started a super intensive set of courses that'll get me a career where i can afford all the Battletech books I want, so I may be less active going forward. I'll still post batreps when i can squeeze them in.

I feel like it's the kind of thing some core world with very robust industry would do. Rather than have full scale true mech arenas, have scaled down Battlebots style matches with kitbashed "toy" mechs using commercial grade lasers and handheld power tools.

Sounds possible. But the story of Custom Robo is wild and you will not expect the direction it goes in

It hits pretty close to the Ghost Bear Alpha Galaxy scheme, though most painters go with slightly more saturated blues and greys. Otherwise there are a variety of units that use a blue or grey base with the other color as highlight, but not much in the way of camo. The two colors together are most often associated with the Bears, Coyotes, or Rasalhague, but blue is a pretty common color in Lyran and Fed parade schemes and grey shows up everywhere. If you want that scheme specifically say it's an OC mercenary unit or a specialist subcommand of a House unit, like the Fox's Teeth or Sorenson's Sabres. There is an existing merc regiment, Markson's Marauders, described as using light blue, grey, and white in an urban camo pattern. That's probably as close a match as you'll get for an canon IS unit.

I know this isn't /v/, but I doubt there's a better place to ask.

What's the go-to best way to get the earlier Mechwarrior games running on modern windows 10? Is there a paste or infopic about them? With whatever quality of life mods might be out there. Specifically MW 2 through 4. I'm gonna try to slog through the x68000 version of the first.

If that won't work (the thing is about 10 years old) then your best bet is to find MW2 and MW3 preservation groups separately (like mechvm.org and unmech3.org).
Especially MW3 is notoriously picky has a page unmech3.org for running the old version and new fan-made unity version (work in progress).
Alternatively there is PCem so running the damn thing like it's 1999.

>where i can afford all the Battletech books I want
Fair warning. When you reach that point, you generally lose the time and give-a-damn to actually read them.

>Have a copy of every Battletech book ever made
>Haven't read anything new since last year
>Entire guest bedroom is filled with hundreds of minis not yet cataloged in my collection
>Haven't painted anything Battletech since last year
>Designed, printed and painted a statue for my company president as the last thing that used those skills last week
>Spend most of my spare time keeping up on the scientific literature in my field, working on my house or wrenching on my corvette

I always make time for watching /btg/ while I'm working on other stuff, but the less time you get, the more you feel like you're wasting it flipping through pages of a pulp novel. I've gotten where I enjoy writing my own, more. Ghosts of Obeedah was the last Battletech thing I read cover-to-cover because it was released on my birthday, and I wanted time for me.

A while back a friend of mine's uncle passed and his hobby was ww2 scale models. He also had a rather time consuming but lucrative career so he had dozens of models still in boxes just sitting on the shelf, waiting for him to have time he ultimately never did. I was invited over to see if there was anything I wanted (and to help him clean the house, get it ready for sale), and standing there looking at that i immediately decided that while I liked my job, I was going to work to live instead of living to work and leave plenty of time for my family and hobbies. If I'd kep going at my prior pace I'd probably have a 4th house and been a multimillionaire when real estate spiked during covid, but I'm richer in other ways.
>>
>>96527121
She had the same on her Shadow Hawk, nothing indicates it as standard equipment though.
>>
>>96527400
It's not standard. Look at the old CCG for Rhonda's Highlander. She literally has speakers hanging off of it.

External speakers are standard on mechs, though. They're just more to talk to mechtechs and infantry without a radio link.
>>
>>96527400
I suspect this belief started as a combination of Rhonda's lore blurp and the tidbit mentioning outfits like Northwind Highlanders or McKinnon's Raiders playing music (or reading the bible) on comm channels as interference if they manage to get their hands on frequencies the enemy uses.
The bagpipes black watch memes had something to do with it too.

anyone know where I can find the rules for how fast the different types of Mechanized Infantry move?

>>
>>96527549
damn guess im fucking blind. That seems really slow compared to just taking foot infantry and throwing them in a APC. Thanks for the help
>>
>>96527555
If you take foot infantry they have to waste a turn disembarking. Mechanized infantry can fire on the move.
>>
>>96527555
I just assume they do a lot of abstracted small scale unit maneuvering with their organic vehicles, scouting and other operator things.
As opposed to a designated APC that gets orders straight from you and guns it as fast as they can.

Thank you, kind stranger. Not the anon who asked but I was wondering about that myself since I'm planning to put together some DCMS lances soon.

The “mektek files” on moddb works fine for the (I believe?) latest Mektek release of MW4 mercs, very minimal tweaking may be required but it runs fine on windows 11. Vanilla Vengeance and Black Knight are also easy to find, but I haven’t really bothered with them.

DOS versions of MW2 are easy to find, run them in dosbox.

Mechwarrior 3 is a bitch to get running on a modern machine, but you can install it then get the Unity remake of the game, unmech3, which as far as I know does run smoothly

Under what circumstance would you need to evacuate your dropship without your lance off the planet/even system, and operate on your own for a while?
>>
>>96531660
When I get to keep all the money.
>>
>>96531660
When you're doing a deep insertion for guerilla or spec ops. Your dropship could do multiple false insertions to obfuscate your location and then fuck off for a predetermined time to get fuel, more supplies, or retrieve your lance.
>>
>>96531660
It's a hot drop and they're going the distance on foot anyway. A lance might get missed in the wilderness, at the very least they're going to have to get in there and search for them manually. A dropship is easier to spot.
>>
>>96531660
Rather than evacuate you just didn't make it back to the dropper in time when friendlies were pulling out.
>>
>>96531660
When your forces are strapped for dropship support, especially in the event they are part of an insurgency or rebellion.

I had it in my mind that my partisans spent much of the war 'dropship sharing' where sufficiently fast lances would be operating in the field in staggered deployments with a single dropship taxiing two or more lances to and from an FOB and in-out of AoOs.

Thank you. The regent is quite messy up close, but I was just fiddling around with colours. A lot of my minis I only spend one or two hours on so they tend to be pretty messy. Hellbringer was probably 6~7 hours over 3 days.

This (picrel) is my favourite new paint trick and I find it really saves a ton of time. Basically oil wash. I apply all over and let sit for 10~20 minutes and then poke at the mini with a makeup q-tip to remove it from the panels. good for greebling and adding some shading. The red version of the paint, Fire Breath I used on the red firefly in that picture and it only took one coat over a thin pink base, so definitely interesting and versatile paint.

Only issue is that if you wanna do multiple coats of it, you'll probably want a matte varnish between them. since they can reactivate. and you need a special thinner (I bought a large container of an odorless one instead of the smaller stinky expensive bottle AK sells).

Unfortunately they used kickstarter swag numbers to determine which factions go first, and as you might imagine, Wolves, Falcons, Suns, and Steiners were top of that pile. It's a self-fulfilling cycle where they ignore the FWL so their vocal fans don't latch onto them so they don't make anything for them. But at least that leaves us forever GMs and actual players alone.
>>
>>96532277
I didn't think the clanners were that popular. They're always the last thing left on the shelf around here... but then I'm an Ausfag so fuck knows what its like anywhere else.

>I didn't think the clanners were that popular.
They're the go to faction for autistic speds because the tech advantage is too hard for them to ignore.
>>
>>96532293
They're big among secondaries due to their strong video game presence and extreme culture that can't be written off as "real country innnnnnn spaaaaaaaace". Plus they have some of the most iconic mechs in the setting. Lots of people who just read lore and collect shelf decorations love the clans.
>>
>>96532306
They also cut both ways since Stars are 5 mechs and it activates the stupid centers of the brain into thinking "I GET TO BRING MORE MECHS THAN THEY DO" and that never irons out completely.

Does anyone prefer succession wars? Maybe it's just because I'm still new but I find succession wars to be simple and comfy, later eras add so much extra tech and idk if it's the right word but OP kinda shit. Idk game just feels a little different, I probably just need to learn more and get better.

>>
>>96532473
As much as I like a couple of the Homeworld clans, I would have liked for the Wobbies to have had some success. Perhaps that was why their IS attack was less 'complete' because they sent all their shadow divisions to the damn homeworlds to scourge and purge the vatborn.

It's 100% subjective. It really depends on what you want from BT. Me, I'm a younger guy who thinks the tech part of battletech is equally important to the battle portion. So my favorite eras are the FCCW and Jihad.

For certain factions and certain BV levels I find a lot of merit in bringing a succwar/introtech unit to a darkage/ilclan era game. Mechs like the Banshee 3S, Devastator 1D and Highlander 733 are a good fit for poverty Great House units or Periphery units. Gameplay-wise they give you something cheap but still incredibly survivable and decently armed, especially if you give them precision ammo. They free up BV for you to use on more advanced stuff while having confusing threat perception for your opponent who can't afford to ignore but also can't afford to overcommit to destroying your 3039 era shitbox

I miss the /btg MegaMek simulations in which everyone created characters and rolled for mechs. So I'm going to see about setting one up, but with a twist, I'll just use my own minis. So there won't be rolling on the RAT, but there will still be randomness. First things first however, we need to choose a scenario. There will be 2 rounds to this, first for determining tech level, then if necessary, the factions involved. So here they are.

1) Clan Wolf star vs. Clan Jade Falcon Star (Battle of possession to claim the other clan's mechs.)
2) Clan Star vs. 2 Inner Sphere Lances (Clan Invasion era. Factions involved would be rolled for afterwards.)
3) 3rd Succession War. Inner Sphere skirmish of 2 lances vs. 2 lances. (Factions involved would be rolled for afterwards.)

You legitimately have to be a no lifer to have the time to spend on RogueTech. It turns basic missions into 45+ minute slogs with low rewards and a good chance of the mission freezing or mission critical NPCs getting stuck in a pathfinding loop. I guess the devs consider IRL time wasting to be part of the difficulty?

Hello there.
After twenty years of absence, I got bit by the BattleTech bug abain, got myself pic related and now want to paint them.

Problem is, I don't know shit. I will, without a doubt, fuck something up. So I'm inclined to do some prep research.

So here are my two questions for you.
1) how can I strip these plastic minis without melting them, and
2) which paints work for that?
>>

This anon is correct. I got tired of the slog and the stupid little online war, went back to BEX. Now I can just play one or two missions after the kids are asleep and relax and enjoy.

Has some weird stuff. Also sour grapes as it was never digitized so the most expensive print novel. Old Iron Pants at the start is peak ASF pilot, though. I've resold like 3 copies in the last decade, upgrading mine and grabbing some stuff out of random scifi book lots. I probably should unbind one and get it back in the mainstream with a good scan.

On that note, we need somebody to scan the in-page novel art and the old intro and TRO stuff like Mike Stackpole in the 31st Century intros that have been stripped from the current iterations. I look at the leatherbound copies I have of the Warrior Trilogy and they are so much less than my FASA first editions. They just feel so sterile and empty.

ESL question; why is it the 'Heir to the Dragon,' not 'Heir of the Dragon?' What is the difference?
>>
>>96535466
Dragon is the Combine, not a person. So you can't be its relative.
>>
>>96535070
For plastic, use 90% Isopropyl Alcohol if you need to strip the paint. You'll wanna be careful because these are generally assembled with a kind of superglue, but they do them pretty tight to begin with and if they come apart they'll glue right back together without any damage.

For paints, the easiest choice is acrylic paints over an acrylic primer. Then you're best off sealing with a gloss polyurethane varnish for durability. Some people prefer matte or satin, but I've been told these can be less durable, so when I matte back up the non-shiny parts of the mech, I do so with a top coat of matte over the gloss.

Some other tips: A lot of the minis have a lot of greebles and recesses that will shade up very nicely if you use a shade/pin wash or panel liner/ink. Be careful if you decide on a panel liner because many of them are enamel: you will want to do them after a coat of the polyurethane to protect the paint and plastic beneath.

I also prime with a 'zenithal' prime of a white primer sprayed from above over a coat of black primer which makes the light-facing surfaces start white and the undersides/shadows start black. This can give your minis more depth especially if you're using rather transparent paints.

However you finally decide to paint, I at the very least strongly recommend the 'paint sandwich' of primer, paint and varnish to get the nicest looking, most durable play pieces you can make.
>>
>>96535466
Both make sense, but "to" sort of depersonalizes things. The usual construction is "heir to the ____ fortune". Theodore is the heir of Takashi, but he is heir to the combine as a whole.
>>
>>96535466
Heir to implies that they're the heir who will get the Dragon or get to be the owner of the Dragon or something like that. The Heir of the Dragon would imply that the Dragon itself is a being with an heir.
The heir to the kingdom is the next king. The heir of the king is also the next king.
>>
>>96535466
The Dragon implies the state of the Combine while of just implies the Coordinator.

Following up to this.

I am looking to make this an 8v8. After you declare your faction, you may roll a D1000 to see what you get. Please make sure to give your Mechwarrior/Pilot a name and if you like, a brief backstory. The theme of this battle is that the people in it are taking it seriously, despite it being about a silly thing. So not played purely for laughs, but it can't be taken all that seriously either.
>>
>>96536638
After you've rolled your mech, use this table to roll your pilot's stats. We'll just be playing this one straight with no modifiers.

Ah, right, I nearly forgot to clarify something a little different about rolling for mechs this time around. Since this battle will be simulated on the tabletop and not in Megamek, the list of what's available is limited, mainly by the color schemes I gave them. Some mechs are in-line with their faction, others are not. What can I say, my brain thinks a Highlander should be purple.

So when you roll a mech, you're rolling for the mini. That means that duplicates aren't an option, except in some cases. For some of them, you'll notice that the mech is listed twice, such as Enforcer/Enforcer. That's because I have 2 available for that faction in its colors. So it can be duplicated once.

This next part will not affect the very first people that roll for a mech, but it's more likely to come up as more mechs get rolled. If you roll a mech that's already been claimed, instead of re-rolling, you take the next mech up the list. (The entry that is next lowest.)

Example. You want to roll a unit for the FWL. You roll a 784, a Rifleman. But someone has already rolled the Rifleman, so that means you go to the next up the list, the Quickdraw. If the Quickdraw has also already been taken, you get the Manticore Heavy Tank. And so on and so forth until you get an open one.
