If you haven't seen any games like that IRL, what matchup would you find most difficult to imagine in-lore?
>>96525038>>96525105You can't be serious. Impactful? If you're trying to say effective, then sure, there's no arguing with that. Lowering stats, extra movement, magic missiles, sure, they get the job done, but are they impactful? No. Not a single spell in TOW is exciting to cast. Not a single spell in TOW will suddenly swing the game in your favor, nor will a lucky dispel swing the game in your opponent's favor either, with conveyance spells being the only real exception. I'd argue this is by design and, judging by the posts about magic in this very thread, was done because some people really disliked the magic phase in 8th (with good reason, but they listened to the complainers too much). As for variety, what variety? Every magic missile does the same thing. Every conveyance spell does (with TMP being a notable exception, and if you want to talk about spells ruining the game, we can talk about how awful TMP was before it got fixed) functionally the same thing. Every enchantment? Same thing, just buffs your guys' stats. Every hex? Same thing, just lowers your opponents' guys' stats. Magical vortexes have a little variety in their effect, but even then they're so fucking boring. Dangerous Terrain! Dangerous Terrain that blocks LoS! Dangerous Terrain that makes you take a break test if you go near it! Dangerous Terrain that moves and deals a small amount of hits if it touches anything! Just go read the spell lores from 6th.There's no point to this discussion if you won't do that. Fuck, I'll spoonfeed you the lore of Fire from 6th. You want to talk about variety? Look at the different spell effects! Look at how you resolved them! Look at how the spells made you play the game differently! Then look at TOW, where every spell is just an effect applied to a unit after you roll two dice against your opponent's two dice. If you want to bitch about 8th's magic, fine, but Fantasy isn't just 8th.
>>96525349I've stopped reading after the first sentence. You're shit at the game or have never played it. Either way you're not worth talking to.
>>96525355I wish people like you would go back to 40k instead of ruining a great game by having low expectations for it.
>>96525358And I wish people like you would stop posting about games they don't play or don't even have the mental capacity to play properly.
The spells speak for themselves.
>6 flavors of deal x dmgIndeed, they do speak for themselves.
>>96521797>Go check out your army's old books, too, so you can see how their rules evolved over time.God I miss Raider. With it, Beastmen would be close to op though given where they are already. So much flavor lost. I'd give up the chaos mark for it in a heartbeat
Turbonube here. Sell me on Goblins, Beastmen, Tomb Kings, Chaos warriors, Vampires, or Lizardmen. Also can I just take sigmar models and put square bases on them.
>>96525616>Also can I just take sigmar models and put square bases on them. For the most part. A few (for example the AoS skeletons) have issues with ranking up on the proper base sizes.
>>96525378You know there's way more ways to impact the game than>Does damageRight?
>>96525669Yes. That wasn't my point. Read the actual spells.
>>96525232If a person wanted to do a vampire coast army, what list would be most appropriate to represent it? Tomb kings perhaps? They're undead and have a good mix of shooting, monsters etc.
>>96525616>Also can I just take sigmar models and put square bases on themFor factions like Night Goblins, Ogres, and WoC absolutely. I've also seen some cool Wood Elf conversions like an all-dryad list that uses those faggot elf-ghost trees as the mandatory Glade Guard
>>96525349>lore of Fire from 6th>varietyYou mean the lore with two spells, both magic missiles, one dealing d6 S4 hits and the other 2d6 S4 hits?Just being cheeky anon, I fucking love the lore of fire
>>96525678Steed of shadow is Spectral Steed but worse. Steed of Shadows is actually in the game but it targets an entire unit.Creeping death is just a magic missileShades of death is Deathly Cabalpelt of Midnight is straight up uselessUnseen Lurker is Arcane UrgencyPit of Shades is just vortex that can slow. Almost every vortex is difficult/dangerous terrain in tow and therefore reduce movement and charges.None of those have as much impact as crystal column, travel mystical pathway, miasmic mirage, earthen rampart or phantasmagoria
>>96526006And that's not counting game shifting army lore spells like Itchy Nuisance, Viletide or Hellish Vigor
Everyone at my locals dropped Age of Sigmar this year and started getting into TOW. I've been out of the loop for a few years as i got more into skirmish games but what happened?
>>96526225As a fan both: AoS 4th is the killer combination of being both extremely bland and poorly balanced. It's just not fun, and a good deal of the things it's lacking (namely customization) are present in TOW.
>>96526225AoS primaris'd their land marines and squatted their beastmen, has no lore, and seems to generally not be very fun or complex due to giant centerpiece spam and tiny army sizes. Not to mention everything that isn't a 1:1 remake of a preexisting WFB model looks like dog ass, not many people out there with Inner Cities of Sigmar or steampunk faggot dorf armies.
>>96526006Steed of Shadows is not just Spectral Steed but worse and Unseen Lurker is not Arcane Urgency. Both of these spells allow you to make a charge, which is something you can't do with conveyance spells in TOW because you cast them during the remaining moves sub-phase. You should also be comparing it to Infernal Gateway. Pelt of Midnight is situational, but you're smoking crack if you think making a unit significantly harder to hit during the shooting phase is useless. Pit of Shades isn't a vortex, it works like a magic missile spell, it has an infinite range, and moving at half speed is a lot more impactful than you make it out to be.>crystal columnFair, that spell is actually really cool. Shame casting it is so mind-numbingly boring.>TMPAs was mentioned previously, a notable, but welcome, exception, but if you want to bitch about broken spells you don't get to say nice things about TMP. I've experienced firsthand what old TMP could do. Not fun.>miasmic mirageGood spell, very powerful. Worthy of being the 6th spell of its lore. Real shame you cast it in exactly the same way you'd cast any other spell, making it feel like any other hex.>earthen rampartsIs it strong? Sure, especially if you're playing at a tournament. Is it impactful? What even is your definition of impactful? Game-winning? Memorable? >phantasmagoriaSure, it's good. Real shame the rest of the lore sucks so hard that nobody ever picks it. Also, it's extremely gay that illusion and elementalism have four out of your five super impactful spells. Not all armies have access to these lores. But, I'll concede, not all spells in TOW are bland and boring in and of themselves. Just most of them, and also all of them, because casting these spells doesn't feel impactful. In summary, TOW magic sucks and I don't like it! 2d6+mod, bleh. Disgusting! And you cherrypicked spells and I think that's gay too, which makes you gay.
>>96526309>AoS primaris'd their land marineswas this not overwhelmingly seen as a positive change
>>96526225>Everyone at my locals dropped Age of Sigmar this year and started getting into TOW.Really? I wonder why they'd transition to tow, They're completely different games. I'd imagine people who are done with AOS or 40k would either go into magic or something else entirely.
>>96526374>People who play a fantasy wargame are into fantasy wargamesThe Warhammer settings are the main draw of new players.
>>96526374Lots of people have armies you can just play in tow with trays. In my club a guy with a vampire army switched to tow and the others are just playing opr (they were playing opr before 4.0)
>>96526394>The Warhammer settings are the main draw of new players.I was pretty sure it was the ease of accessibility, although I still dont see how that answers my question
>>96526309
Update on the tmepole: after three roof attemps in 3 hours, I've managed to get something holding and not horribly unaligned.I'll add a secondary 'under roof' to cover the lower parts and solidify the edges, since it'll be a removable roof, so 1-2 characters can just hold the line/die gloriously inside.
>>96526412>although I still dont see how that answers my questionThat's not the part of my post that was meant to answer the question. People who play a fantasy wargame are into fantasy wargames, this shouldn't be a shock.I really don't know why the logical response to not liking say Bolt Action would be to start play MTG and not to find a different WWII wargame.
>>96526374>be a beastman playeraos killed them>be a ogre playeraos replacing the line with different aesthetic>be a cities player>aos replaced the line with different aestheticIf you like /yourdudes/ you go where they are still a thing.
>>96526374TOW is just AoS but with rank and flank tactics and working magic and artillery that doesn't just function like nu-40k, where every spell is either a XD6 shooting attack or debuff. People are tired of 10th ed 40gay and 4th ed AoSissy and their shrimplified no-customization anti-/yourdoods/ horseshit. Also helps that half the AoS range people actually buy (WoC, Night Goblins, Ogres, AoS tranpires, Dark Elves) are more or less usable in TOW with a simple adapter tray.
>>96526490>>be a ogre player>aos replacing the line with different aestheticno, it isn't
BULL time
>>96526357What if you were one of the people who liked the landmarines and then had your army changed for outsiders(who still won't play landmarines)

>>96526490I don't really see what updating ranges has to do with /yourdudes/Besides, ogres look to be staying relatively samey? The sneak peek they showed just has a normal gutplate, nothing crazy.

NoWill you remember the game where you lucked out and managed to overcast purple sun and blew up his lord and his entire unit? Or when you fail and your wizard and everyone around him explodes? Yes

Raaroo!
>>96527225Huh, the preyton is a lot smaller than I thought it was.
>>96527231Yeah it’s pretty small compared to other monsters, it still has the large target special rule though
... my memories have just been sold.
>>96527267By an angel in a centerfold?
>>96526309Weird thing about Age of Smegmar is that the humans and dwarfs and elves are absolutely total shit But they do have some nice monsters and gribbly things like the undead or wolf riders Oh and Oruks, which are basically just 40k compatible Orcs
>>96527225I just built mine too. Did you have some large gaps as well or am I just retarded?
>>96527362I have no idea why they made those weird, fucked up, gangly, sickly Not!LOTR Orc guys instead of making a cool new hobgoblin range to fill the same niche, or why they fucked up the aesthetic of their regular Orcs so bad. Oh well. And yeah, I hate everything to come out of AoS other than the 1:1 remakes like their Night Goblins, but the elves and dorfs are by far the most offensively shit, with Eltharion in the hollow suit of armor and Grombrindal being the only exceptions. They even managed to fuck up Gotrek somehow.
>>96527451all the modern GW stuff looks like its made of pipe cleaners
>>96527469The new Eldar range makes my cock throb and the AoS WoC and Night Goblins are god tier, everything else lately I agree. I also hate the Cathay range, too many heavily armored elites and not enough huddled poorfags with pointy sticks and fire lances.
>>96527451>they made those weird, fucked up, gangly, sickly Not!LOTR Orc guysI actually like those models, but they sure as fuck arent orcs.I was thinking of getting some second hand and using them as a base for nurgle-flavoured mutants of some kind

>>96526773>He doesn't know
>>9652757912 feet tall bro.
>>96527644I know, they're updating the line, not changing the aesthetic or theme.
>>96526374>>96526225My local scene does both, but TOW is slowly gaining frequency. I enjoy both, but am more about TOW desu. Personally, I like it primarily because it's more "relatable" to me. I'm not a huge lore guy, and have yet to read a single GW book. But with 40K and AoS, when every faction has essentially infinite land and resources, it's hard for me to care that town/planet 15437 got burned to the ground. In alternate fantasy earth, a 2000 point game is probably how big a renaissance era battle would look like. If my guys fail to repel the invaders, their entire city, of which there is a limited number, is probably fucked. Conversely, sacking my opponent's city would actually matter in terms of prosperity. My guys running off the battlefield makes them feel realer to me than simple game pieces. In terms of gameplay, I like that there are fewer, but larger, decisions, and fuckups are punished severely. It makes me feel like I'm actually commanding a battle than playing a board game. Also I like that I can carry 2000 points in a reasonably sized backpack

>>96527859I think what bugs me most, other than the weird "partly smooth and extremely well-made and partly even shittier than Blorcs" look, is the fact they they clearly understand how mail works, and yet don't fucking wear it under their plate, it's just dangling there uselessly as a decoration. I don't mind the spears or shields as much, I just think the armor itself looks inconsistent and shit.
