Elves are generally seen as great archers, this can be very important. with longer lives and harder to replace people i'd expect elves to focus on quality of troops and supplement with racial levies or summoned units.more to the point armies require tremendous logistical strength that elves can't likely overcome.elvish armies without magical assistance would by nature be very defensive. they cannot over extend, or be of really large size and most importantly they cannot afford to lose lives like humans can.pre industrial warfare is incredibly expensive and only a few people can really afford to be full time soldiers so they'd need to either be the warrior class or have a strong militia culture (see tudor bow training)the real swing is magic, strong and powerful magic can wipe out armies. if elf mages reach say black company general tiers then they don't need to worry, just drop the Elf limper in a battlefield and that's a deterrent

Which is to say, heavy use of longbows (or proprietary Elven Bows(tm)) and mobile, lightly armored troops. Rather than traditional pikes, their anti-cavalry element would probably come in the form of long swords, a-la the liaodao or horsecutter, better at flanking and sticking in with cavalry rather than absorbing a direct charge with massed spears. Of course, they would certainly have cavalry of their own. In my conception of elves, they'd actually have excellent cavalry archers/mounted skirmishers to complement their infantry focus. They'd be lacking in a heavily-armored power unit, but this could either be compensated for with some druids/wizards, or perhaps some "champion" heavy infantry that have great stats but are very low in number.
