Now that we're almost done with getting all the codices down for editing, and the core is nearly finished, if someone wanted to work on getting all the expansion rules together so we can have them ready for editing, that would be helpful for the future of the project.

This would include:

i actually had to update the list to show what was completed, so this is a good segue. top are the 3rd ed printings, the bottom are the 4th ed printings. for 3rd we went from 3.5 era on, and eldar and on from 4th were considered too much for the meta so that was our cutoff. everything in green is what you'll want (witch hunters is yellow just because it's still pending)

we plan on backporting stuff for a fan edition later, but this is just to distill the specific 3.5 era in a single book. there's nothing stopping you from using the later codex in your own games, just know it'll have some broken bits and try to avoid them.

I've been looking for the Adepticon comp rules for years now. I e-mailed them a while back to see if they had copies, but they're missing the ones from 3rd., 4th., and 5th. I've been asking around my local area to see if anyone has an old tournament flier that I can type up.

4th. had actually good competitive rules, especially if both armies adhered to each composition requirement. They helped balance between 3rd. Edition codices and late 4th. You're not seeing stuff like Space Marined lasplas + assault cannon spam, Eldar flying circus, or the dreaded Iron Warrior 3x units of Oblitetators backed by 4x heavy support choices.

I know what youre talking about, but I cannot see how this pertains to the eldar book except the fact that it has the 5th ed style fluff/special rule pages separate from the list building pages. From a design standpoint of the actual book contents, it shares very little of the key differences between 4th and 5th ed books which mostly pertain to

The biggest sin of the 4th ed eldar book is that the wargear chapter is just so pale and thin because of how they chose to format the book, but there isnt really anything actually missing from the book, the eldar wargear selection in 3rd ed is pitifully small compared to say space marines.

I prototyped out a codex format using the same bigrulebook.cls that I used to make rulebook (albeit using my homebrew content so try not to get hung up on that). You have to remember anon that there were *two* design philosophies for 5th. The one we saw in the latter half of 4th that was exemplified by CSM but affected all of the latter 4th books to some extent, and the one they eventually pivoted to when the 5th core rules actually came out which is the one you mention. The post-5th one was more egregious, but the shift in the latter-4th books is still noticeable. Also as anon mentioned, 4th Eldar really emphasised the skimmer issues in 4th in a way the Tau just didn't due to Eldar invincible skimmers having fucking sick weapons and shitting Aspect Warriors in your face instead of Fire Warriors.

Genuinely? Pick cool art from 4th edition and do your own rendition. There is a lot to choose from, and the ability to put cool, original fanart in the 4th Edition Battle Bible would be a major draw.

You would have to consider that this is a "4chan project" but I don't think anyone would object to you wanting to promote yourself, especially since you're doing volunteer work (like every other contributor).

Perhaps, if you would prefer lighter work, doing simple shapes and boxes to illustrate some parts of the rules you think can maybe be hard to understand without a visual aid. Any contribution would be appreciated.

I have not discounted it but unless we rework the backend into a database its a huge task of basically retyping everything and making sure you didnt make an error. At its heart that is how things like newrecruit i.e. battlescribe work.

All the data is entered into a huge database, and then it is pulled back out where needed. Ive tossed the idea around but I dont have anything working as of yet, and stuff I have looked at for battlescribe makes me want to die. You cannot write a database like you write a book, you need to design a database, then design a tool for putting data into the database, then design a tool for pulling stuff out of the database. Then you can use the stuff you pulled out and build a pdf from it with latex. Right now I only have this last step done.

For example, this is what you type to get the burnaboys entry. Now I know at first glance this might make your eyes glaze over, but I urge you to take 60 seconds to look at the patterns. Its just plain text grouped into logical groups. The worse part is probably the list syntax which is rather verbose.

Chapter Approved is on the list and the Minor Powers are in one of the CA books, so I'd say they're in.

I would say no. That was the CA that included the experimental assault rules, which were then rolled into 4th ed, and so to me it seems that decided not to keep the minor powers stuff. They are not referenced in any of the fourth ed codices or the 4th ed rulebook (unless I am mistaken). They were only ever listed as optional trial rules; I would put them firmly in the camp of step 4 optional supplements.

Yeah I definitely agree with that, I do think there is value in having them in the format in that capacity though. The later codexes in use here mostly supplant a lot of the need for them, but they would be fun to incorporate into a friendly game.

I dont think there is any real math behind it. If anything you might be able to get an idea for how things should 'fee' based on how hard it is to kill a space marine or how easy it is for a space marine to kill it.

If I can find the article that serves as evidence, I'll post it later, but there is no calculation. They said an asshole with a lasgun and a 5+ sounds like 5 points, and then it's all intuition and testing from there.

That there is or could be any formulaic balance to any of this is a mass delusion.

Points calculators are nearly an impossible task. There are just too many factors to take into account. Everything from stats to squad members to intended optimal target to which army it belongs to.

Are Forge World models going to be included in this? Actually, in general, which codices/units are going to be in it? Maybe I'm just stupid, but I can't seem to get a clear idea just from the thread. I want to make an Ork army adapted for this project, so any guidance would be helpful.

Strongly disagree. By that standard ALL supplementary material prior to the 4th rulebook should be discarded. For a start if we're including Journal army lists then I don't see any issue including anything published in CA, but more than that what's the actual point of this project? It seems to me it's to make playing 4th edition the way people actually used to play it at its peak easy and simple, and if some slobbering buffoon had rolled up to any group I ever played with in those days and tried pulling

What else would you have us discard, the Kroot list? Gaunt's Ghosts? Deathwatch Kill Teams? All the stuff that "wasn't properly playtested" or whatever nonsense excuse will come next for why it shouldn't be included is what makes this era of 40K worth playing.

Year ago I remember reading a blog that fully reverse engineered the points values in RT and 2e.
Yes, the basic human with a basic gun is 5 pt, but there's more including how to calculate the fugde factors for better BS, etc
