It’s all in the paintjob now that will make or break it.
Do you have the skrag brown paint? Or really any orange brown paint when watered down to a milk/wash consistency can look like some nice 28mm scale rust but not quite too rusty.
The technique is done in this video of not!orks https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dvlvzXaEmso
Sorry that I’m on mobile. YouTube is laggy for me so I’m not quite able to find where he exactly does the technique.
But I think it is worth checking out.

My Eldar Combat Patrol arrives tomorrow and I still haven't settled on a Craftworld. I want to do one of the big five so I can use the transfers. They all have cool lore to recommend them. I've never played 40k before so I don't have a preferred playstyle or anything. And honestly the thing that made me pull the trigger is I believe the Exodite rumors so I wat to already own and be experienced with Eldar by the time those guys drop so I'll be able to immediately start integrating them with my army instead of starting from scratch.

Eldar enthusiasts, help me!

well lets see the process was:
>prime model with leadbelcher
>took a large flat brush and did a lot of downwards strokes using Pro-Acryl Light Umber (only slightly thinned)
>repeat the same with Pro-Acryl Transparent Orange but targeted the parts I wanted to be the most worn down (followed real metal reference photos where I could)
>in places where I wanted actual texture I applied splotches of typhus corrosion 50/50 with tap water mixed very well (I pour half a pot into an empty GW pot and fill both the rest with water and use a nail polish vibrating mixer to get it really blended)
>apply various shades of browns/blacks where it felt right
>touched up some edges with a drybrush of leadbelcher
>added tiny specs of white using the corner of a makeup sponge wedge
and I think that was about it for the bare metal? similar steps used on this test tank

What do you mean "why"? Do you know how any of this works? Like, at all? Do you understand why the different regiments in the lor are called "the Cadians", "Catachan", "Krieg" etc.? Those are the names of the world those regiments are raised from.

Each planet above a certain population has to meet a tithe, a number of regiments they have to raise when called upon to do so. When the Imperial Navy shows up, those regiments need to be ready to go. That's the system. The famous planets are famous because they have very high standards for the guys they send. But that is in no way universal. Different planets do it differently.
>>
So in any given fight what are the actual stakes involved for the Imperium?

Like...we don't really care if the lose the battle for Armageddon, for example. There are over 32,000 hive worlds, Armageddon is only one of them, the Imperium wouldn't even notice if it was lost. So, what's the stakes?
>>
>>96538706
armageddon is important because of its location, not the uniqueness of the planet
same with almost every other imperial world that gets desperately defended, they're either in a critical position or they have some unique resource to offer
>>
>>96538706
massive resources lost and the enemy potentially gaining ground especially bad of orks or chaos gets the planet
>>
>>96538709
But...it's space. You can just....go past planets. Or go around. Hell the Imperium isn't even a contiguous territory, there's xenos and chaos infecting planets within it all over the place.
>>
>>96538711
>massive resources lost
What, .001% of the Imperium's resources? Oh no, what a setback!
>>
>>96538712
The fact that the Imperium isn't contiguous makes the locations of planets even more important. A world might be a crucial staging ground for a nearby conflict, or might be in a relatively calm space in the Warp so it's safer and easier for ships to enter and exit the Warp nearby. It might be the biggest food producing planet within the closest dozen systems, and therefore crucial for keeping the whole region supplied.
>>
>>96538706
The strategic importance of the planets, the artifacts they stand to gain or lose and the time they can buy for the greater war effort are the stakes. Maybe it’s vital information. Sometimes it’s not about what you have to lose or gain but what you must prevent the opposing factions from gaining. Sometimes it’s just about pride.
>>
>>96538717
First off, if every world is only .001% and the Imperium decides it's not worth fighting over, then rapidly they will start losing worlds and that 1 will start moving left.

Secondly, resources are one thing. Resources where you need them are a much bigger deal. This is what the other anon was getting at by talking about the importance of location
>>
>>96538717
yeah and if you dont contest it not only do you lose that planet, the orks/nids/chaos/whatever is still fresh to move on and take the next one
>>
>>96538712
>>96538717
You've clearly already set your false image of how the setting works in stone in your mind and are just looking to argue
But I'll leave you off with the statement that you're fully wrong about how 40k works or why those planets are important
>>
>>96538717
its not like the entire Imperium has access to everything at once. if a planet is important to the system its in then that whole system really feels the loss since it could be the only one like it. remember even the populace is a resource that contributes to the guard and a lost planet is billions of soldiers lost over the course of thousands of years
>>
>>96538717
the more planets that are lost the more people lose hope and turn to chaos to cope. even if a planet has no use its still better to keep it safe bc that is less potential heretics and daemons
>>
>>96538696
>The 7th Karthan “Paper Pushers”
>unit trained to file requisition forms
>accidentally sent to the front
>>
>>96538706
>>96538717
Losing resources and your enemy taking control is a double setback that has the potential to spiral out of control.
It's generally how Ork empires start because the imperium loses a key manufactuaring world, the wider sector loses its war supplies and the orks gain those through looting, so the defended of neighboring worlds are worse off and have a much harder time defending.
Once an ork empire is entrenched enough they'll start raiding other sectors causing havoc for an even larger area of the imperium, and since their so entrenched it usually takes quite a sizable crusade to retake the worlds, and if they don't do it fast enough that'll just causing otehr Ork warbands to get come and take part in a good fight.
So at the end of the day it's much more cost effective to not lose the world in the first place, than it is to deal with problems that are caused by losing it.

It was really refreshing reading the fluff in the Faith and Fury book because it felt like the writer had a great grasp on how each of the legions wage war.

>Word Bearers rocking up to a shrine world and using their knowledge of the good book to subvert it and drum up a religious up rising
>Iron warriors creating a horrifying mechanical-daemon factory that they use to wage a massive armoured war
>Night Lords torturing thousands of astropaths to cause warp instabilites leading to ships dropping out of the warp into their well laid traps and them being space pirates.

T'au lack a social life and as such their civilian life is largely based on civic duty. Due to the scheduled breeding within a caste there is no meaningful family unit to base civilian life around. In this way the civilian life of the T'au is functionally based on the "work unit" and probably has the closest real world comparison to Japanese work culture. Furthermore the T'au forgo the concept of personal property combined with the water caste mediated social hierarchy leaves the majority of the civilian impulse to be focused inward on the execution and improvement of their work duties. You can imagine the average T'au civilian as a Shokunin with their shortened life span and communal birth group/schooling providing an accelerated 10,000 hour program from the ages of 5 to 9 where they are holding the 'saal rank. Likely around their 10th year they are elevated to 'la and placed into their first "real" position in their caste industry.

There's very little anxiety in T'au society due to the strict, ordained nature of their social ordering that the real world Japanese equivalent lacks due to the necessary competition a society in the real world demands.

You have to occupy the mindset of a T'au being born into a welcome role they are well equipped to grow into without any of the social anxiety of needing to HUSTLE and SHUCK and JIVE. They dont know how to be miserable because they dont know how to want more than they are provided.

Anyway, Tau do have social lives outside their jobs. AS pointed out by an anon, Water Caste members in their free time open up shops not for money but as a hobby in which they get to know and interact with alien races and fellow Tau.
Recreational drinking is common among the Water and Fire Caste.

In the Elemental Council novel, it's said that the Tau instinctively seek to socialize and form connections with other Tau even if they are from other castes.

Here's a legit question to everyanon who wants some form of Exodite model;
Let's say GW were to release a mounted Exodite, or an Exodite with a dino familiar/pet/attack animal, which would you prefer? [A] A creature that either is, or looks very much like, a real dinosaur? Or [B] a creature that looks like a dinosaur but more fantastical, maybe more dragon like, or something like the Mutadon (raptor/pteranodon hybrid from the most recent Jurassic World movie) or the 'Ultimasaurus' (pic related, from a scrapped Jurassic Park toyline)?
>>

What if the fists are only slow because they need to be charged for each punch? So if you don't charge them it's just big hands?

Also I just realized the new model has some of the weirdest aiguillettes/cords ever, instead of being worn over the chest decoration, it IS the chest decoration.

I think exodites' dinosaurs should looke somewhat alien, as in having more than 4 limbs and/or more than 2 eyes

no chitinous segmented parts and no mammalian bodyplans though, they should look recognisable as a "trex but..." or "raptor but..." or "ceratopsian but..." or "sauropod but..."

think avatar alien creatures, but dial that back a few notches and stick to dinosaur silhouettes instead of reskinning panthers, gazelles and dogs or monkeys.

All those off-hand compressors are about the same in terms of quality, I'd try and find the cheapest possible compressors you can find with a tank. It allows you to spray for longer periods of time without burning out the motors super fast and also is a more controlled burst of air, whereas that one will pulse slightly and the motor will run nonstop
>>
>>96539431
That's the generic chinesium kit there. The compressor is sold in slightly different versions under any number of names, but it's all the same thing from the same factory. It's nothing to be amazed by, but it's ok, the version with an air tank bolted on is slightly better.
Airbrush likewise is standard cheap Chinese stuff. But at least it's a gravity fed double action. Probably not very good, but will likely manage to vomit out base coat and (with sufficient nozzle size) primer as well. Usually have very fragile nozzle designs, don't cry when you break it.
An ok place to start, replace the airbrush with something better when it breaks or you want to do finer detail stuff, replace the compressor with the tank version or something better when it dies on you.

Alright, pic related is one of the highest rating ones on my local reseller, Fengda FD-196(AS-196) (ching chong) with a max 6 bar air pressure and is said to be suitable for 0,2-1 mm airbrush nozzles, 130 euro price total. Would this be so recommended pick? 47db noise wise so at least it wont be loud as fuck compared to what I usually hear about these things hitting 70-80db

Look at air compressors at your local hardware store. They're meant for powering air powered nail guns and the like but with a good regulator you can bring the pressure down to work with an airbrush. They have much larger tanks than hobbyist compressors which means you can use your airbrush for longer without the compressor firing up.
They can get quite loud but there are silenced compressors that go down to 50db~

>RAAAH I FUCKING LOVE THE STATUS QUO

>>96539475
Honestly, unless you're doing anime statues or really tiny airbrush blends, you can buy a really cheap airbrush too. I've been using a 30cad polish clone airbrush for a decade now, and use it for blends, vanishing, zenithals, basecoats, primes etc.. with no issues. And yeah that compressor looks better. It'll also be quieter because a tank compressor only runs the piston until the tanks full and then turns off automatically, so most of the time it's not running and you're just spraying off the tank silently.

On the other hand getting a cheapo simple airbrush is also something I considered, I mainly do grimdark stuff using enamel washes, oils, technicals etc so I imagine I'd use an airbrush for priming, zenithals and then doing some basic layers or at the very least selectively paint some areas, so maybe thats a better idea
Pic related is what I had in mind, surprised by the amount of good reviews and even some YTers made it work, surely this could be an option, no? Its also like 40 euro which is nothing

If Lucius the Eternal were killed by a xenos, would he become a Chaos Xenos? What about a woman? What about a dog? What about a Primarch?
>>
>>96539533
It's not a mainline big nid thing, it's a mainline numerous nids thing
cultists aren't numerous enough and aren't synaptically communicating enough

but they are psychically active, somewhat in communion with the patriarch's own broodmind, and sometimes numerous, so perhaps they can do something small scale and local
>>
>>96539533
The "shadow in the warp" phenomenon is a byproduct of the tyranids being so numerous and psychically active that they drown out everything else but themselves. I would assume genestealer cults generally don't achieve the same effect, even connected through their brood mind, because there just aren't nearly as many of them clustered together most of the time.

File: neophytearmor.jpg (159 KB, 1600x1200)
159 KB

>>96539609
In my case the heavy lifting is painting the GSC armor with the grey that I have, which is Vallejo Game Color Stonewall Grey. I like its tone but a bit difficult to work it, dries too fast, thinning it down takes some effort and so on. It takes a lot of time to basecoat the armors with a brush, whereas I can just load up the airbrush with some airbrush thinner and 10 models are all painted in 15 minutes including cleaning the airbrush. I painted 30 neophytes + 5 acolytes after priming them super fast, which would take me forever to do with a brush.
By not being precise I mean the nozzle/needle being large (0.3mm so it sprays on a wider area) so the paint gets to the areas that are not intended. Which is fine for priming and basecoating larger surfaces.
>>
>>96539552
>>96539609
Ah found something similar and it made me think, and its probably not possible and a retarded question in general, but theoretically if I would buy pic related, could you also replace the cheapo pistol with a more expensive airbrush if you can connect it to the compressor or is that a fat no go?
>>
>>96539622
Being able to not take forever with base coats sounds wonderful for sure
>By not being precise I mean the nozzle/needle being large (0.3mm so it sprays on a wider area) so the paint gets to the areas that are not intended.
Oof, alright so smaller areas are a little tough but you can use it to do some undertones and such, no?
>>
>>96539595

No idea. It's a single-action airbrush that has a constant airflow, a decent airbrush is a double-action one where you also control the airflow and the mini-compressor might not be suitable to deal with that.
Just go for it, it's dirtcheap and just for being able to prime makes it worth. I've yet to use varnishes but gonna try that out soon as well. Make sure to grab some airbrush thinner and some isopropyl alcohol for cleaning stuff. It's probably gonna die on you, which is a good learning experience and you can just replace it for 4 dollars provided the compressor still works.
>>
>>96539631
Maybe. An 0.3 nozzle ain't huge (a compressor like that won't move enough air for a really wide nozzle anyway), but there's a question about how even this thing sprays and how good control you can get over it. Extensive use of masking tape and putty can help.

Tech-Priest Enginseer (55 pts)
Tech-Priest Manipulus (70 pts): Warlord, Magnarail lance

5x Pteraxii Sterylizors (80 pts)

My Eldar Combat Patrol arrives today and I still haven't settled on a Craftworld.

I posted about this yesterday but the Eldar pic I included was too hot and distracted everybody, so I still need help figuring this out!

If you enjoy the rainbow aspect of the eldar you could simply have your army a coalition of various craftworld forces

Usually anywhere from 1:1.5 to 1:2 paint to thinner. I do a lot of brushing as well so air paints aren't very convenient, I'd rather just buy the thinner honestly.

Hellions and Wyches are a lot better. Scourges are the same so still very much autotake. Kabalites still good for objectives. Incubi really good now. If all you have is the combat patrols and you’re starting a new army this is a great box. I won’t get it because I have so much of these contents already but for new people it’s good provided you have raiders already.

What's a good brush on black primer? Abaddon Black is ass. GW recommends multiple thin coats of it but it still sucks.

Also in the Necron Codex they recommend using the Runelord Brass or Leadbelcher paint to prime the model. Would that really work? Shouldn't you prime Black, White or Grey first?

I want to make a homebrew chapter so I don't want to include chapter specific characters/units, but I'd like to lean into melee and I heard Blood Angels, Dark Knights, Black Templars, etc are much better for this.

I think the majority of people wanting a refresh will regret it when they release the new Kabalites and Wyches. Less options, more tactical rocks, silly poses. The potential for them to mess up is immense.
And one thing is for sure: They wont be as cheap any more.

If i were a Dark Eldar player (i own the Hand of the Archon KT, but thats it), i would buy some more Infantry right now, because both kits are great as they are.
>>
>>96540679
Just make a successor chapter of those and you can use their units too anon.
>>
>>96540678
>Are Adepta Sororitas playable at all on the tabletop?
Depends on when you are asking the question, rules change all the time.

There's a bigger problem of SoB being one of the hardest to paint and most expensive factions to collect in the game.
>>
>>96540662
Yeah, it is kind of sad they lost four more units. Most of which have been in the faction since the very beginning in 3rd. They got their first new data sheet in 15 years and it's just for an upgrade. Sprue for kablites with some garbage melee weapons (and only because they are phasing them out of Kill-Team and wanted to rebox them). Meanwhile, they've lost nine units total in that same time span.
>>
>>96540677

I'm talking about their troop boxes Anon. Did you even read the post? Its about Wyches and Kabalites. Not the army in its whole.

They are both $45 (35€) MSRP. For 10.
To set this into comparison:
Necron Warriors: $52
Hormagaunts: $52
Tau Fire Warriors: $60
Tau Scouts $45
Kroot: $58
Ork Boys: old $45 new $60

The two DE boxes are among the cheapest base infantry sets GW currently sells, and its guaranteed that they will raise that price whenever they get an update, and this update is not guaranteed to be as good as the current boxes (see new ork boys as an example, or the chaos cultists).
>>
>>96540703
Because in many occasions they have chosen the worst poses to compare minis, when the new cadians came out we had a fuckload of morons posting their size comparison that mislead many people into thinking the new cadians (or krieg) weren't bigger.

If you want to compare who's taller between two guys, you don't ask one to crouch or lean, defeats the whole point, you want all in the same poses. And let's not pretend modern GW miniatures have many different poses to begin with.

>>96540722
No. Most Astartes rules require a specific keyword in the units stat line.

Ie blood angels detachment Red thirst reads "RESTRICTIONS
Your army can include BLOOD ANGELS units, but it cannot include any ADEPTUS ASTARTES units drawn from any other Chapter."

or the Black Templar's detachment
"You can re-roll Advance and Charge rolls made for ADEPTUS ASTARTES units from your army.

RESTRICTIONS
Your army can include BLACK TEMPLARS units, but it cannot include any ADEPTUS ASTARTES units drawn from any other Chapter."

Thats the way Astarte's detachments work in 10th. You can't mix and match chapter specific units (Units with key words black templar's, space wolves, ect) But you can use generic Astarte's and 1 chapter
>>
>>96540722
>Muh special Astartes chapter does everything every other chapter does with no drawbacks.

Sounds like a Gary Stu chapter. You might want to make sure your special chapter actually fits the setting and lore anon.

Why can't knights have long enough arms to hit smaller than a dreadnought targets? Why can't they have hands so weapon swaps are an easy thing?
>>
>>96539364
>>96539352
It actually goes back to 2nd edition because at the time having a sword was one of the few way to have someone be able to parry.

It's like the reason for why all the standard Questoris Knights have a stubber. At the time if you shoot something you were forced to charged that thing, so by having a stubber you were able to shoot the big cannon against a target and then charge the other thing you just plinked with a stubber.
>>
>>96540807
Fists for knight to knight-sized combat

>>
>>96540805
Yes anon, any unit with the "ADEPTUS ASTARTES" Key word would get the bonus but in order to play that detachment you can only use generic and space marine units with the BLOOD ANGELS keyword. IE you will be playing blood angels or a blood angels successor chapter.

"Each time an ADEPTUS ASTARTES unit from your army is selected to fight, if that unit made a Charge move this turn, until the end of the phase, add 1 to the Attacks characteristic and add 2 to the Strength characteristic of melee weapons equipped by models in that unit."
>>
>>96540679
You can choose to use any of their army rules without picking special characters, yes. Things only get restrictive if you want to play certain chapter-locked characters or exclusive units (like Sanguinary Guard for Blood Angels).
>>

>>96540789
but that's not the same guy doing the size comparison pictures

So since we got so many release waves this edition, doesn't that mean we can determine what factions will get a big unit drop in 11th?

100% going to happen:
>Orks obviously as the #1 suspect for the starter box
>Drukhari super needed, especially losing so many units now
>Grey Knights
>Guard/Catachan
>Custodes will get all their new 30k plastic stuff in 40k as well
50/50 it might:
>Admech, either thralls or robots
>CSM bikes
>GSC stuff
>Necron flayer subfaction
>>

I found Sisters easy to paint (compared to space marines, way quicker because they're smaller and more cloth which is super easy to make look nice) but the basic sisters are annoying to build because they're broken into an unnecerssary number of parts with mould lines down the middle of visible areas (like the helmets). It feels maliciously designed. The easy-build ones that came in magazines and can be pretty cheap on ebay are a much more pleasant experience.
