Repostin for an answer. Does anyone know either a good paint mixture or a straight paint that I'd be able to make something close to this range of colors with? I want to make eye glow this color but I'm having trouble finding cyan paints. The closest I've found is probably Pro Acryl Turquoise or the Thousand Sons blue family of colors, but they're not quite a right match. I'm also noticing that most of the cyan/turquoise colors I'm finding lean more blue than green for some reason.

There's like 6 different kinds of weathering in that picture. You'll need to be more specific.
>>
>>96552667
The tracks the streaks and the grime on the doors mostly. I figure the stuff on the edges is sponging even though I don't know how they got it so fine
>>
>>96552692
Just finer sponges, but yeah the tracks has to be pigment or some sort of texture paint.

Completely missed the point.
Which is that this thing is an attempt at copying his work. The same exact color scheme, same exact type of weathering used, also HH armor, etc.
>>
I just watched the Vince video on sharp, thin lines. Can lahmian medium achieve the same effect as flow aid, or are they two completely different products? I want to get some very fine lines but they've been coming out thicker than I want.
>>
>>96554022
Lahmian medium is literally just a gw paint without pigments in it, it wont do anything but thin the colour
The flow aid is for reducing the surface tension and is very different.
A very very dilute amount of soap or laundry detergent can be used to help get the effect if you want to just use things from your house.
A quarter of a teaspoon of detergent in a litre of water should be enough

The best thing is that we don't even need to think about how unique this or that application of weathering is, because by including these two bits of absolute nonsense you've clearly marked the overall quality level of your observations here as utter bollocks.

Of course it's not. I've never claimed that. But considering that you can pick basically an unlimited number of paint schemes, hundreds of types of armor weathering, dozens of possible mud pastes, and enamels/oils to use, etc., and they somehow selected the same exact everything for it, one would have to be mentally deficient to not see the obvious "inspiration" there.

>>
>>96555102
I mean it could be worse, but actually good control straight from the bottle ain't happening. For that you put a drop of glue down on some sacrificial surface, then use a toothpick/mutilated needle/fancy-schamcy CA applicator thingy to pick some glue off the "palette" and apply it where it should go.
If you think that's unnecessary then go play around a bit with 1/700 ship models and their photoetch upgrade kits. You'll learn.

If those people expect different kind of content then I guess it makes sense. Personally, I both photograph my models and at anime cons during summer as well as various other topics I find interesting. I had no account before but people at cons expected one and encouraged me to make it so I did. Now, of I would post plastic tanks instead of cosplay shots, they wouldn't be interested or wouldn't want it to show on their main page or hoe it's called in IG. Likewise, if someone else would want to see kitbashed plastic mecha, they wouldn't like being notified about some cosplay. At the end of the day, if you are not really about monetizing IG, you shouldn't really worry and consider it solely as communication platform.

Hello WIP; I was wondering if anyone got a custom mat printed by a company.

I've been painting a chorf blood bowl team and it occured to me that old, hand sculpted models were easier to paint because they had very pronounced creases. Sometimes you don't even need to use shades, just layer the model and it would look nice even without fancy techniques.
Anyway, discuss, post your retro old old stuff etc!

>>96559195
another thing to consider is that anywhere the sculptor could get his modelling tool in, you can get a paintbrush in. for that reason there are almost never any hard to paint spots on a hand sculpted model

Have some NOS 3E Warriors (from a sealed 3E battleforce I managed to score cheap!) which I'm building for use in 4E, gonna be running them for melee with leaping legs. Built the first one, still needs his toxin sacs though. Mostly 3E parts, with the exception of the adrenal gland and the rending claws, both of which are from the newer kit. The gland just fits better on the Warrior carapace and the old rending claws, aside from being only one pair per three Warriors on the old kit, are kinda oversized for them IMO.

they are watery because the range is optimized for airbrushing
also colored metallics (i.e gold) in this range are fucking dogshit in my experience
>>
Protip to anyone here, the new(?) Kaleido varnishes are genuinely worth the hype. Picked the matte and gloss up along with their white primer- the primer is very good, if a bit finnicky, but the varnishes are honestly worth their weight in gold. Ready to airbrush out the bottle, don't run or spiderweb at all, and don't reactivate even chemically fragile paints. I airbrushed some of the gloss over some Molotow Chrome and whilst the shine was dulled a fraction, it didn't fog up or react in any way.
I've heard these things described as water based acrylics that behave like lacquers and the varnishes at least honestly are. If they bring out coloured clears that behave this well I will buy every single one.
>>
>>96561213
>They look perfect on scale model and gunpla though

>>96561707
I don't have a local store so I buy everything online, thus I tend to do more research about new products since the selection is larger with no convenience tradeoff.
>>
>>96561707
Probably not, I just figured it was worth mentioning. In my experience aqueous acrylic varnishes can be an absolute bitch to spray, and solvent based ones can damage acrylics, so having the best of both worlds seemed like something that would be nice for a lot of anons here.
>>
>>96561731
I've been using AKs for a while and had no issues whatsoever when thinned 1:1 and these are acrylic too
>>
>>96561744
I have heard AKs are very good. These are pre-thinned which may be a plus or minus depending on your preferences; I like it because I can't fuck up the thinning ratio myself but anyway. They're definitely a very good retard-proof option if like me you're used to airbrushing lacquers, but need something that won't destroy delicate paints.
I do need to check out AK's paints though, I hear they're very good. I've been moving away from Citadel onto other brands, mostly the new AP stuff and also Golden Hiflow acrylics which a friend of mine recc'd. The latter are very good, though a bit glossy and very expensive, though they're monopigment and extremely high quality, and you get a fair bit in a bottle so eh.

I dont buy sets but I really like their olive greens, very vibrant. Grey-blues are my go to for blueish white and mahogany browns and turquoises are beautiful as well. The quality is very consistent across the range, too. Just all around solid paints, as much as acrylics can go at least.

I don’t like pro acryl because of the way their pants flow. It’s hard to describe, but they just don’t stick to minis very well. And I’ve tried multiple paints over different primers, so idk.

thanks, I use a combination of army painter and citadel for the most part, the assimilator was auric gold and army painter green, but I've settled into a more consistent combo of 1:1 auric gold and thunderhawk blue layer paint.
basically just shake the bottle, dab my palette knife into the thunderhawk, apply to palette. Wipe the knife well with a damp paper towel, dab into the auric gold, mix well.

congrats, you have a nice metallic blue that glints gold in the light.

No, you wipe as much paint as you can onto the palette, then collect as much as you care to onto a brush, and/or wipe back into the bottle.
you wipe BETWEEN putting it into the gold, or between the gold and the thunderhawk if you're a barn yard animal like me so that you don't contaminate your paints with metallic flakes.

The gold is quite desaturated, but it works for a more gritty aesthetic. Vince Venturella mixes it with the copper in the same range, as well uses gold pigment from GSC to infer a much better gold, so those two are not entirely hopeless, weak as they are alone.

Yes, they do. However, they get cleaned a lot after shooting too (and worn out barrels get replaced very quickly as well).
In general, tanks are very often weathered way to much, completely ignoring routine maintenance.

It always should depend on what you want to show in your model. A tank that is currently involved in intense and more or less constant battle for a week? Or one that is on the way to the battlefield?

Depends on what quality you're aiming for I guess? You can obviously paint better shadows by layering or whatever but it will definitely take longer and I feel like NH work really well with contrasts. If you have an airbrush tho you can quickly spray some simple transitions and then paint in the shading. I painted picrel as a one-off thing and didn't use any contrasts, for example.

Kinda depends what you're using as a primer. For GW rattlecans 30 minutes is enough, if even says so on the package. For actual primers it's usually recommended to wait 24 hours but I've painted over Mr Surfacer and Vallejo surface primer after an hour or so without any issues.

Thats exactly what it does. In your phone you have very short lens trying to focus light on very tiny sensor. In order to have higher resolution material, it just have to make lots of tricks. Your best bet is to use some third party software for photo taking, on Android you have Open Camera but no idea what iPhone have instead - Im sure that it DOES have something.

You can also try to take RAWs and edit them on PC yourself but it kinda kills the whole point of using phone instead of, you know, actual camera.

No problem, it's a common issue people have in here and isn't really something that's noticeable until you start trying to take photos of something so small.
>>
>>96569522
>You can also try to take RAWs and edit them on PC yourself but it kinda kills the whole point of using phone instead of, you know, actual camera.
The main problem with using an actual camera isn't that bit, but having one in the first place. So as much as I'd recommend a proper camera with a decent macro lens here, shooting raw in the phone is at least something and will be very accessible for most.
>>
On this topic - what's a reasonable camera for photographing minis that's also better than a phone camera for like day to day pics?
>>
>>96569602
I feel like phone cameras are more than enough unless you're trying to take like professional pictures.
>>
>>96569586
Is the post processing why certain details and highlights get washed out in pictures? I notice a lot of more subtle highlights I put on don't show up much in pictures.
>>
>>96569602
Any point and shoot digital camera is going to have a better sensor than a phone
>>96569883
yes, it's exactly why
The post processing makes images look "prettier" but you sacrifice fine details to do it
>>
>>96569602
To be honest, for minis or scale models it mostly matter of macro lens (which is usually costly), for body it can be one of those reasonable APS-C like Nikon D5300 since you don't need good low light performance - your subjects are stationary and can stand as long as you need so as long as you use tripod or similar gear, it doesn't matter if you have few seconds long exposure time with some tiny aperture like f/16.

Or Im just biased since I also do photography as a hobby.

Speaking of Nids, I put together this take on the sexy Neurolictor fad for a laugh, and also to use up some crap from my bitz box. Needs some putty of course but coming along quite well IMO. Purely a display model, it's way too unstable for tabletop use and also I hate big base elements on gaming piece models.
Recipe BTW:
>Pyrovore flamespurt (nozzle cut off)
>Biovore carapace
>OOP metal Venomthrope feeder tendrils (sawn off the main body, ironically you might be better off with a Finecast one as it'll be slightly less topheavy)
>Carnifex head (cut down significantly)
>Venom cannon feeder tube
>Venomthrope head
>Psychophage tongue
>Tyranid Warrior chest (I used the Prime version specifically)
>Tyranid Prime adrenal glands
>Tyranid Warrior scything talons (talons themselves removed at the wrist)
>Plague Drone limbs (balljoints cut off and boils lanced shaved away)
>Last-gen (4th edition) plastic Genestealer lower arms (the smaller ones with daintier fingers, one hand cut and reposed)
>Last-gen (5th edition) Ravener tail (I suspect this will be the trickiest component to source once they're discontinued in favour of the KT set)
>Dustback Helamite back legs (inorganic elements shaved off and base connector platform cut down)
>Parts from bootleg NECA Alien toys off Aliexpress (I believe the smaller part is a Scorpion Alien's back spine and the larger part is the Snake Alien's head; they're pretty damn cheap and make for great bits for larger Tyranid bashes such as terrain or biotitans)

And absolutely loved the look and want to try and paint a Predator in a similar style. One thing I want to know is about he flame cutting marks, how do I know where they should be? I assume they're marks from how the steel gets cut at the factory, but where should I place them? This is the tank in question.
>>
>>96575049
>>96575076
They only look this way because you're comparing them side-by-side to other shades of orange. When used as the only orange paint in a scheme, those paints are very clearly orange. Just look up examples of GHO and MF being used on actual models.
>>
>>96575344
You'd have to kind of make it up as you go along but if you imagine the tank being built they'd be placed along the edge of a large panel, where it was cut out from the stock metal; it's kind of hard to explain but try looking at photos of real tanks for inspiration.

Also that's two teeth side by side in that lions mouth, the angle is a bit bad for that
