"I like games with a lot of depth. I like games in which you can dive in; games in which you can discover something (for example a new world); games in which you can try out different strategies; games which surprise you even though you have played them several times." - Wolfgang Kramer

Survey results: https://pastebin.com/YJPZ44rq

This general encompasses all board game genres - Eurogames, Ameritrash, Ameritreasure, Fillers, Party, Abstracts, Wargames, and especially the game that one anon is autistic about at this very moment.

TQs:
- What's a game mechanism you initially hated but later came to appreciate?
- What game do you think is overrated, and what similar game would you recommend instead?
- What's a board game opinion or piece of advice that you completely disagree with?

Bonus question: What is your favorite game by Kramer & Kiesling (either together as a team or individually)?

>What's a game mechanism you initially hated but later came to appreciate?
Deckbuilding as you're playing. I came from Magic. Gotta build decks before you play. Hated having to play for cards to add to your deck while playing. I've done a complete 180 though. Now I hate building decks before playing.
>What's a board game opinion or piece of advice that you completely disagree with?
People tell me to stop buying metal coins for games and just use the coins from another game. And no. If you offer metal coins for your game I'm going to buy them. Fuck you.

You all remembered to P500 Chad Jensen's magnum opus they way he originally intended for it to be made right?

>- What game do you think is overrated,
Dune Imperium (either version). Every time I get dragged into playing it there's a decisive turn where someone is about to win, there's a upset where someone stops them, and the other three players get upset that the game doesn't get to end.
If everyone recognizes that they don't want to play the game why were we playing it in the first place?
>and what similar game would you recommend instead?
Lost Ruins of Arnak. It's not much better, but it is better and it is similar.

...is probably the most boring game in existence.
>a-at least the gameplay is good
"No!" The gameplay is dreadful; the game was terrible. As I played, I noticed that every time a minor power was played, the player did it for the symbols instead of an interesting effect.

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time a card was played for symbols only. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Reuss' mind is so governed by bland effects and thinly veiled set collection that he has no other style of gameplay. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Spirit Island by the same Kenneth Johnson. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these manchildren are playing Spirit Island at 31 or 32, then when they get older they will go on to play Phase 10." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you play "Spirit Island" you are, in fact, trained to play Phase 10.

>Mechanism you hate but later came to appreciate
I wouldn't say appreciate so much as "built up a tolerance to". Worker placement. Dedicating a player's limited action economy for future resource gains in order to power future shit they actually want to do? Still utter dog shit game design. Just have players gain X number of resource of their choice per turn and axe that mini-game bullshit. I do not automatically pass on games that feature such a mechanic anymore though.

>Game you think is overrated
Magic. Ashes is better. Summoner Wars is better. Mage Wars Arena is better. Magic is pretty much shit even in the narrow scope of mage vs mage battler games.

>What board game opinion do you completely disagree with
Components don't matter.
That's a terrible opinion. Components are a foundational aspect of a game. Good components won't make a bad game become good, but bad components can absolutely make a good game become bad. I'm NOT talking about miniatures and other stuff like them, but core components like card stock being cheap in a game with a lot of shuffling.

>Ashes is better
not for drafting, unless fans came up with better rules than the official ones
>Summoner Wars, Mage Wars
also can't draft.
Cube is the only reason to play magic though

tempting, but I haven't tabled my copy of Pacific yet...

Nah, Magic is shit. The only reason it still exists is because sunk cost fallacy and card chasing whales are too retarded to let it die. Hasbro and Wizards wanted to make D&D the Fortnite of table top and they lost their shirts trying to do that, but good old Magic tards are still throwing in when Marvel, Final Fantasy, and other bullshit comes into town. Rick and Morty and My Little Pony and actual Fortnite sets will show up and you dipshits will still throw money at them.

easily yes

Meh, they are only kind of similar.

I think AoD is better overall because a game of it plays faster though.

>Shipping update from Kickstarter
Oh. As much as I hate that crowd funding is the way to get some board games, it is kind of nice that I totally forgot that I funded something and get the shipping notification. It's kind of like a little surprise present to myself. That I coughed up 300 bucks for 2 years ago when I was kinda drunk.ugh

But I am still kind of mad that I bought Agricola again. Fack.

>this bait would be a little better if MPCfill and cubecobra didn't exist
This looks acceptable (still, it would be $100 to print a full cube of proxys, plus you need a few lands), but in the end you are still playing MtG, which is honestly not that good.

>card chasing whales are too retarded to let it die.
Seems like Summoner wars and Ashes are following along with their constant new faction packs.
Are there no good self-contained games that provide the same experience?
>>
>>96648699
>Seems like Summoner wars and Ashes are following along with their constant new faction packs.
I don't know about Ashes, but Summoner Wars' new faction stay balanced, still bring something new and you are totally free to not get them and won't be excluded due to the meta. That's all fair in this case.
>>
>>96648579
Oh I meant the 300 bucks one.
I'm a tad ashamed but I caved myself and K*kestarted railways of the lost atlas, just don't think I can score a retail copy of it.
I suppose that's the one thing it's good for, creating niche products

As much as we rightfully shit on cult.of the new and blind consumerism, there is something to be said about novelty in itself being fun. You don't need it to stop a game from being boring or to rebalance it, novelty when well done just fun in itself.

Which would also make for an interesting TQ next thread.
>Do you enjoy learning new games or would you much rather strive for mastery of games your group already knows?
>Why?
>>
>>96648789
I did it only because I'm fairly certain I can sell it for 80% of the pledge price in case we hate it. But who knows, it might be more widely available afterwards. The relatively tiny number of retail backers does make me sceptical though
