Nobody posted a source so I guess this is a made up story, but there is a similar bit in Master of Mankind.

>There was more – somehow, the lobotomised woman’s very last thoughts had been of her human life, and the weeping children that had been pulled from her hands as she was hauled away, screaming, on her way to reprocessing. Alpha-Rho-25 discarded the data as irrelevant: a tediously emotional misfire of a dying, imperfect biological engine.

It is interesting to think about how on most imperial worlds, the kind seen in the Cain books, they never encounter any of the serious shit in 40k so the emperor is like god is in Christianity. Just the guy you learned about in Sunday school, maybe you dated an emperor botherer.

Now imagine the psychic awakening and suddenly actual miracles start happening. People would flip their shit

The Wraithlord model is honestly great for its age. It's only real flaw is the legs need to be cut up if you want any pose besides standing, but you can get some damn nice posing out of it if you put some work into it.

>>
>>96681687
I choose to believe that the Imperium’s short life expectancy is like how it was in the medieval times, as in when you take out child infancy mortality (or Imperial Guard mortality) it’s actually an average 65-70. Basically if you can avoid the war you live a pretty average amount (you won’t avoid the war)
>>
>>96681422
Tau ain't even got artillery
>>
>>96681687
They love to put throwaway lines like that in stuff like the Calgar comic (that’s where it comes from.) It annoys me because it’s usually grimderp that they put in to say see look it’s still grimdark even as the tone shifts.

Although I suppose you could steelman that one as not being grimderp by saying it’s that lot because so many people die in childhood. That’s why real life societies has low life expectancy, babies died due to lack of modern medicine while adults lived full lives most of the time

>>
>>96681706
thanks, Im excited and I hope it turns out how I envision it.
>>
>>96681710
the thing is its a combination of shit right? you've got child mortality PLUS the losses of the Red Army in WW2 on steroids PLUS general poor health due to environmental disaster and industrial toxins. all that BARELY offset by the lucky few that either get turned into Space Marines or super augmented tech priests or have the money for immortality through rejuv treatments.
>>
>>96681710
It’s sad yeah but Ultramar could be pretty nice to live in general and it still be true. Even the children of Roman patricians and emperors used to die.

We really underestimate how much human civilization was transformed by a small number of technologies, antibiotics in particular. And guess what…antibiotics are losing their effectiveness due to evolution among diseases. The hand of Nurgle at work….

How is even life expectancy counted? Like 35 what? Years? What years? Solar years? Do Ultramar(ians?) count life according to solar years or their own sun in their own system? Is there a standardized way to count how old someone is? Then what about Tau? In a novel an Ethereal said he is not scared to sacrifice himself as he is close to death anyway being 60 years old. Again what years? Then there are Ethereals who like live for 300 years like Aun Shi. What years?

Kind of, actually. Killing an aspect warrior puts their soul in their spirit stone, then they modify them to become tormentor crowns that causes them to radiate pain and agony by torturing the soul trapped inside them so strongly it effects others nearby..

People complaining about the 'good old days" of 40k rules seem to forget that broken comps had long reigns of tyranny and usually had to wait until the next edition or codex to be solved, rather than the 3-month cycle of balance updates we have now.

>>
>>96682041
so in pure theory, old 40k was supposed to be accurate to some kind of a narrative. i.e named characters would be OP with literal plot armor. So the game relied on you and your opponent basically agreeing to not break the game

However, in practice, to not break the game you had to essentially throw the game at several points, you couldn't run monoload out units like all lascannon devastators were seen as waac by some people

how are autarchs trained? do craftworlds just notice a particular aspect warrior is cycling through several warrior paths without becoming an exarch and that makes them an autarch? or do they specifically have to walk the autarch path?

In pure theory, it always has been even in the current edition. In 3rd & 4th edition, you only used special characters by mutual consent - But they weren't OP as such, they were just better versions of their nameless unit types with a special rule or two. Marneus Calgar still "only" had 4 wounds and 2+/4+, which stood out because most non-monster characters had 3. The rules have gotten tighter because quite frankly, a tighter ruleset is better for any game than a loose one, and if people want to play 40k narratively instead of competitively, nothing ever stopped them from doing so and there's no need for GW to force it when its up to the players to simply choose how fluffy they want their game to be.

>>96682106
Yeah, but OP in 4th is like, one more wound and +1 to two attributes and costing 40 points fewer than they 'should' because the matrix GW used for point costs based on stats didn't have a metric for characters' unique rules. So they were OP in that sense, but they didn't dominate their games and become mandatory picks when events allowed them. The idea always was these are special guys that can makes the games thematic if you include them, but they aren't going to play your game for you.

Should I magnetize them? Or since the recent codex is that not necessary for things like Crisis Suits since they basically grouped them in 3 same weapon teams? Riptides, Broadsides and Ghostkeel's probably should be magnetized, no? Is that a big hassle? Do the weapons fall off and are annoying when magnetized? This is stupid as fuck because names don't fucking change because of the language, Robute Guilliman is fucking Robute Guilliman in every fucking language. Considering the Arabic numerals and the English literary rules involving EVERYTHING in the Imperium and our own universe, the "common language" (Low Gothic) would most likely be understandable and near identical to modern English. Education and standardized pronunciation allowed English to stratify and halt development. The Dark Age of Technology civilization would take great pains to have have a common language across human space.

"High Gothic" is most likely bad Chruch Latin combined with technical terms to obfuscate and simply deny lower Imperial citizens the very concept of higher technology and learning, which is exactly why the Catholic Church of old refused to translate the Bible into local languages.

What's pissing me off about the Tau or rather the Tau community is the extreme need to be the "good guys" in the setting and any mention of shady stuff gets swept under the rug pr hard-core seethed at (like Ethereal manipulation).

I'm sorry but you can't spin an "Alien overlords ruling over other aliens and humans" in a good light. Sure it might be a better fate than living on a Forge World but it's still aliens ruling over you. They are not a [Space Sector] Federation of Worlds, they are called The TAU EMPIRE. TAU come first. There's a reason they get to ride cool suits and you are slogging on foot as a meat shield (like the Kroot etc.) Tau will always come first and when push comes to shove and shit goes down they won't hesitate to exterminate you or "peacefully relocate" which historically ends up the same way.

How does space marine geeseed multiplication work? From what bits I understand you use 1 set of geneseed to make a space marine and when he dies you extract 1 new set that make a new space marine. But if that's so then shouldn't space marines be going extinct from ones that die where you can't recover the geneseed? How do they make geneseed in a positive ratio?

>>
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>>
>>96682904
A complete geneseed is still those 2 pieces together though. Unless you can extract them from space marines multiple times, it's still spending 1 and getting 1. Which means you can't lose any or its negative.
>>
>>96682915
Both Progenoids will produce complete geneseeds. Unless you fail to recover the body, you're getting 2 per Marine.

"Phase 18: There are two of these glands, one situated in the neck and the other within the chest cavity. These glands are vitally important and represent the future of the Chapter, as the only way new gene-seed can be produced is by reproducing it within the bodies of the Marines themselves. This is the implant's only purpose. The glands absorb genetic material from the other implanted organs. When they have matured, each gland will have developed a single gene-seed corresponding to each of the zygotes which have been implanted into the Marine"

They're overpriced and have a few janky things about them that make them not as good as regular Kabalites. You can't split them into fives with a Venom and therefore can never bounce them in and out of transports, they don't have sticky objectives, they get half as many guns because you can't double up on heavy and special weapons, their precision ability doesn't work on blasters or dark lances, stratagems that Target Kabalites don't work on them, they aren't durable enough to be worth scouting out into midfield because they will still get run over instantly, and their melee weapons are kind of jank and don't quite make them competent skirmishers.
Maybe if they come down like 15 points they might be worth taking outside of Kabal Cartel, but right now it doesn't immediately seem like it.

>Taus standard equipment is seen as special weaponry to the Imperium
So the Tau is more technologically advanced than the Imperium right? Like the imps have WAY better tech overall but its hidden away and used by very specific and powerful people and groups, standard gear vs standard great the imperium is just outmatched by the Tau
>>
Would it be more fun to play 4 40k armies or an army each for 40k, aos, legions, and Horus heresy?
>>
>>96683152
Yes, common imperial tech is "inferior" to Tau tech.
But, the imperium still can use sometimes exotic DAoT stuff that mogs anything the Tau has, it's just hidden away by the greedy and paranoid AdMech.
Also the Tau sometimes miss the point of imperial tech, whose main feature is being made to last. From starships to space marine suits, they last for centuries or even millenia. This adds to the already overwhelming superior in numbers imperial logistics.

>>96683177
>Yes, common imperial tech is "inferior" to Tau tech.
Imperial tech can be cruder, but they still have plenty of common stuff Tau don't. Even something as simple as a las power pack is quite a fancy piece of tech I don't see Tau making use of. And stuff like pulse weapons aren't that fancy. It just uses induction to heat and propel the projectile.
>>

>>
>>96683201
> Predator was main battletank of DAoT humanity
yes, but that was because DAoT humanity do not really used tanks anymore. The RH1-N0 variants were literally STLs for colonists dealing with orks and other fauna. Just like Knighs and Titans were repurposed construction mechs.

The more civilized DAoT core human worlds were closer to the Star Trek Federation or The Culture until the Iron Men rebellion fucked it all. So most of their really advanced weapons dissapeared leaving just the prepper toys.
>>
>>96683218
It is, especially when it comes to what was the average distribution of the tools amongst colonists, who must have favoured hardy simple equipment, but it's also undeniable that it produced extremely advanced technologies

the votann are another example of some of those, and while most of their forces we see are those of glorified miners they still have outstanding power armors, a mastering of various other fields of tech.
the tau got handed a rudimentary version of ion weapons from them and they've been thus far unable to develops it to match the understanding and sophistication of the votann ion weapons.
This must be imagined for many other fields, if one were to treat the nebulous daot fairly.

Humans at the time weren't certainly at the heights of eldar or necrons, but they were surely ahead of the tau in their current state.

It's weird how over time everything that came before was better than what we have now. Thunder warriors went from inferior proto-marines to primaris+ that tore marines in half, with some handwaved reason they had to be gotten rid of. 2e CSM used Crusade era plasma that was more dangerous than later Imperial plasma, and lacked a lot of the post-Heresy equipment of the Imperium. Now Crusade era marines had way more cool stuff than what 40k marines have.

Leopard 1 was built on the concept of armour not mattering, putting emphasis on mobility and firepower. Then we invented composite armour and suddenly armour mattered a whole lot. Even Starfleet ships began to armour up in later shows, not just relying on shields.

>How is even life expectancy counted? Like 35 what? Years? What years? Solar years? Do Ultramar(ians?) count life according to solar years or their own sun in their own system? Is there a standardized way to count how old someone is?

A redditor once actually did the numbers based on the stated distance of Macragge from its star and worked out that a "Macragge Year" is between 2.41 and 2.85 standard Earth/Terran/Solar years. So if they were counting by Maragge years and not Terran/Solar years then life expectancy on Macagge would be 84.35 to 99.75 Solar years.

>Then what about Tau? In a novel an Ethereal said he is not scared to sacrifice himself as he is close to death anyway being 60 years old. Again what years? Then there are Ethereals who like live for 300 years like Aun Shi. What years?

THANK YOU! I've asked a few times about any source for Tau life expectancy being low because all I could find was Aun'Shi who was nearing retirement age at 40, but still able to kill Orks in close combat.
If I remember correctly, a Tau year is approx. 300 Earth days, which would mean the ethereal you were talking about was just shy of 50 Terran/Solar years old.

But the big problem in all of this is that I legitimately don't think the writers are smart enough to have ever thought about any of this.

How the hell did you pick 2 of the lamest models in the range. The platofrms and war walkers are so awful to me. Also no Eldrad? He's literally mandatory in a seer council list to lead that 4 stack of locks.

picrel if you dont like using a named character, the model itself is great

you're wrong about the meaning of that word just like you're wrong about the rest
>>96683435
the point is that a main battle tank during the DAoT wasn't representative of their real military tech. Just like modern archery bows doesn't tell you anything about modern assault rifles. Do you even know what the meaning of "MBT" ?
>>
>>96683451
Using named characters is gay

>the point is that a main battle tank during the DAoT wasn't representative of their real military tech.
[citation needed]
>Just like modern archery bows
Modern compound bows are not standardised military equipment MAIN BATTLE TANK by definition is military equipment.

that's the big machines, the smaller infantry units can and likely will be different

jes goodwin in particular has a weird personal fixation regarding adding different modes of locomotion and stances which is expressed mainly in tyranids and admech but was called out explicitly in the latter in one interview

>There were weapons in the older days that could do it: weapons of immeasurable power, tech devices employed by both the Iron Men and the alliances that stood against their cybernetic revolt.
>Oll remembered the horror of entropic engines that ignited planets. Sun-snuffers that uncoiled like serpents the size of Saturn’s rings. Mechnivores ingesting data along with the cities that contained them and hurling continents into the heavens. Omniphage swarms stripping flesh from a billion bones in the blink of an eye.
>Those were the good old days, when war was something too colossal for a human mind to comprehend.
>Not like the End War. The Warmaster’s heresy was a smaller thing, scaled for human and post-human brains.
>Perpetual (short story)
This is just one reference. Tanks during the DAoT in actual core human worlds were just not a thing.
>MAIN BATTLE TANK by definition is military equipment.
You keep missing the point. The Predator was a repurposed civilian vehicle and that's it.
It says very little about what the real DAoT military looked like. Like trying to understand the whole US military by looking at a prepper hunting deer with a composite bow.

alright. at least I don't have to waste time on your shitty list no one cares about.

>Tanks during the DAoT in actual core human worlds were just not a thing.
More proof of this is how the Rhino had to be "rediscovered" in 30k in Mars, while there were DAoT colonist survivor civilizations that were still using using it as their mainstay tank until conquered by the Imperium

Amazing that you can still turn your noses up like that when your head is buried into the ground for the call to prayer.
>>
>>96683513
people just do not get that the end of the DAoT was just as bad for humanity as the Fall for the Eldar.
Pretty much all big human systems were destroyed or fell into barbarism like Terra. Only low tech far away colonies really were able to prosper and weather the End Night
>>
>>96683533
>Only low tech far away colonies really were able to prosper and weather the End Night
And these were either destroyed by the imperium during the Great Crusade, or later during the HH.

Ive never understood why all these ESL artists dont just ask a friend to proofread for them so it reads better. I know a bit of french and sometimes I will ask someone I know fluent in french "is this correct, does this sound right?" and every single time they give me a quick 2 second answer. you spend hours drawing this shit and cant spend literally less than a minute hitting up one of your paypigs on twitter or something to fix this. hell, you can run it through chat gpt at this point.

my favorite slop tubers, who happen to get early access to GW prodcuts, say every edition of 40k is broken so we need to be grateful for modern rules.

thoughts?
>>
>>96683576
My thoughts are that you're a fucking idiot for watching sloptubers, next question
>>
>>96683576
There are no good sloptubers and I certainly wouldn't trust any of their opinions on rules of all things.

White Scars and Iron Hands release next week. I'm sure of it this time

>The Predator was a repurposed civilian vehicle
And the M16 is a repurposed civilian rifle. You keep ignoring the fact that those "prepper colonists" had whole empires of their own. They fought wars and had standing armies, they weren't just a bunch of frontiersmen in ATVs with machine guns strapped to them.

Sounds like 40kg, except 40kg will call you a nogames nomodels secondary fakegrog tourist if you question why 10th stinks like rancid eggs.
>>
>>96683576
fuck sloptubers, but it is true that every edition is essentially a different version of the same game so if any given person played all 10 editions of the game people will have a preference for one of them and it is true that 10th is the most "flat" of them so many will prefer that versus pervious editions that are really high variance, low variety, poorly balanced etc

Plus there will always be newfags who get their first experience in 10th and a decade from now will be nostalgic for it.
