Thread needs more print pics

Guy is selling an ELEGOO Saturn 8k on Facebook marketplace for $100, but one of the corners of the screen is dead and can't be printed on. (Probably like 10% of the total screen area)

Is it worth it? It would be my first printer

craptastic cell pic but i just printed this androsphinx from crab miniatures. It came out great. Ive been using a mix of crab and Txarli minis for my opr tomb kings army and the stuffs been great. Their pre supports have works surprisingly well too.

Yes. Buy it to familiarize yourself with the aspect of printing in itself. The print area is big enough so you wont notice those 10%, and you will learn how everything works.

Elegoo is THE brand, generally speaking, and while the Saturn 2 (i assume it is, because you mention 8k) is not the newest model, its still good enough to print you decent miniatures.

We managed to go the whole last thread without a furry comment post. Can we do it again?

They currently sell mkII, mkIII, mkIV and mkVI in the HH ranges. The mkIV do have different proportions than the other ones though.

That's because they're ancient and completely underscaled in comparison to modern Heresy kits. Loggyk's Mark IV fixes that, and his Mark III has more poses than the five plastics are in.

Honestly, allowing him to take the matter into a court by getting behind him to shoulder the initial legal costs might actually be the best case scenario to set a precedent against GW.

It's a trial in FUCKING SICILY of all places, about a matter so nebulous that convincing somebody who knows nothing (and doesn't care) about Space Marines and whatnot that this is real actual important business is pretty much a shot in the dark. The court bowing to the giant corporation "just because" is probably just as likely as getting a "Fuck off with this bullshit, they're not actual 1:1 replicated forgeries so I couldn't care less, REJECTED".

Also, In Italy, when you lose you usually have to pay all the legal fees of the winner too. So while this could end up crushing Ghamak forever if it goes bad for him, it might also end up being pretty hilarious if some whatever judge decides that getting bogged down with little plastic toys is not worth of his time and summarily rules agaist GW because "They're not direct copies, you have no leg to stand on".

How can you make such assumptions? Legal fights can easily drag over years, so asking for money is never a bad thing and his reserves might only last so long..

This. If this is settled with some kind of deal, behind the scenes, GW (their specialized lawyers ofc) will make it a win for them.

But even if he loses, it might give other creators some valuable insight on what exactly is problematic to sculpt, and what is not, because GW will have to deliver a detailed list what exactly is wrong with which of Ghamaks sculps in order for the judge to even attempt to understand the situation.

I'm browsing through recent article #2598 (on which the entire thing is standing) cases in the same court and hell, the fact alone that GW sells physical minis in stores and Ghamak sells files to be then printed by another completely different process could very easily be determined as the fact that the products are intended for two different markets and be ground enough to entirely dismiss the case in a complely judicially fair and unimpeachable way.

That would be a hilarious "Please base all your 3D-sculpting enterprises in Sicily, we have a precedent and will have your back" turn of event.

On the other hand, GW then could pivot to have a tiny section for stls on their website (useless shit for basing or you know, those "Battlefield Trophies" bits) so that they can "rightfully" claim the same market.
But I wouldn't put them past being jewy enough that they wouldn't put anything digital up because the margins would be lower, even if that would make it easier for them to squash small-time sculptors.

Its actually surprising they did not already do that. I expected their transition of FW towards providing prints and not casts of upgrade parts and maybe even STL files to go a lot quicker.
It will come eventually, and if its only for legal reasons to support their fights against the competition, as you said.

But he only gets the full amount back, if he wins in full. Its also possible that it will end up in a draw, or a partial victory/loss.
And to enable him to even do this for some years (which is something that will, no matter how it ends, provides a lot of clarity for other creators and customers too) giving some bucks is not the worst thing to do.
Worst case for everyone involved would be if he has to submit because he cant afford to fight. Because this would encourage GW to go after the next one. And that next one might be a creator whose models i actually like.

Honestly, I'm all for having the GW Store turning into basically Hero Forge where I can assemble MYDUDES™ and the buy them, even if they overcharged for stls (which HF kinda does) and had all kinds of Premum paid-service bs like full kitbash ability to pose shit.

Those are fine machines from a reputable brand in this space. The Resin might be bad, depending on how prone you are to dropping things. ABS-Like resins can take some falls, regular resin can shatter like glass depending on the brand.

I have the older version of the saturn 4 ultra, and I love it, but it has a hatch where resin could get into the machine, which is bad. I printed a year and never had a critical spill, even though I had holes in the film, so it is avoidable by care.

The problem with the Saturn 4 ultras is the experimental flip mechanism, which makes spills worse, but helps soo much in print adhesion. If you don't want to deal with it, the Saturn 3 Ultra is better than the basic Saturn 4.
