Guy is selling an ELEGOO Saturn 8k on Facebook marketplace for $100, but one of the corners of the screen is dead and can't be printed on. (Probably like 10% of the total screen area)

Is it worth it? It would be my first printer

craptastic cell pic but i just printed this androsphinx from crab miniatures. It came out great. Ive been using a mix of crab and Txarli minis for my opr tomb kings army and the stuffs been great. Their pre supports have works surprisingly well too.

But even if he loses, it might give other creators some valuable insight on what exactly is problematic to sculpt, and what is not, because GW will have to deliver a detailed list what exactly is wrong with which of Ghamaks sculps in order for the judge to even attempt to understand the situation.

I'm browsing through recent article #2598 (on which the entire thing is standing) cases in the same court and hell, the fact alone that GW sells physical minis in stores and Ghamak sells files to be then printed by another completely different process could very easily be determined as the fact that the products are intended for two different markets and be ground enough to entirely dismiss the case in a complely judicially fair and unimpeachable way.

That would be a hilarious "Please base all your 3D-sculpting enterprises in Sicily, we have a precedent and will have your back" turn of event.

On the other hand, GW then could pivot to have a tiny section for stls on their website (useless shit for basing or you know, those "Battlefield Trophies" bits) so that they can "rightfully" claim the same market.

Its actually surprising they did not already do that. I expected their transition of FW towards providing prints and not casts of upgrade parts and maybe even STL files to go a lot quicker.
It will come eventually, and if its only for legal reasons to support their fights against the competition, as you said.

But he only gets the full amount back, if he wins in full. Its also possible that it will end up in a draw, or a partial victory/loss.
And to enable him to even do this for some years (which is something that will, no matter how it ends, provides a lot of clarity for other creators and customers too) giving some bucks is not the worst thing to do.
Worst case for everyone involved would be if he has to submit because he cant afford to fight. Because this would encourage GW to go after the next one. And that next one might be a creator whose models i actually like.

Those are fine machines from a reputable brand in this space. The Resin might be bad, depending on how prone you are to dropping things. ABS-Like resins can take some falls, regular resin can shatter like glass depending on the brand.

I have the older version of the saturn 4 ultra, and I love it, but it has a hatch where resin could get into the machine, which is bad. I printed a year and never had a critical spill, even though I had holes in the film, so it is avoidable by care.

The problem with the Saturn 4 ultras is the experimental flip mechanism, which makes spills worse, but helps soo much in print adhesion. If you don't want to deal with it, the Saturn 3 Ultra is better than the basic Saturn 4.

I got a resin printer and realized that just having it sit in the open air of my garage is gonna stink the place up and I don't want to do that. I print in my garage. I use a grow tent with an exhaust fan and it dramatically cuts down on the fumes.
I don't use a filter.
Make sure you get a fan with variable speed so you can have it running slowly when not printing and fast when printing

Saturn 4U and 3U are about the same in print quality, but the 4U has some improvements that came with slightly less build height. The Saturn 4 basic has the worst of them both, that's why when people do not want to take the risk with the tilt mechanism they default to the S3U.

The mars is smaller, for not that much less money, so for most people it is a nice beginner size that tends to quickly get restrictive. Same story between the 5U and the 4U, just one number higher.

The tilt mechanism does stir a bit, but that is not the point. With it you do not pull straight up to release, but angle it. Imagine like picking up a magnet, its way easier if you lift up a corner first. This makes printing more reliable, less force on the model and thus a bit faster.

But the mechanism works with the vat on a trapdoor. If you get a huge spill it can get into the machine. Small spills are fine, there is a gutter around the trapdoor, but if you are the kind of guy that fumbles in a huge way, this might not be the machine for you.

What do you do when you get a hole?
Me I run a cleaning run so the hole is closed by cured resin and carefully lift it up with something ready to stop spills and dump the resin back into the bottle through a filter.

Many people did not manage that and spilled 1L of resin into their machines. The elegoo reddit was full of those guys, and loads of people got afraid to buy the machine because all they see is the few people who fuck up, not the loads of people who print fine and never write about it.

And I would say, tuning a FDM printer is harder but is getting better with modern machines.

I use a turkey baster to remove resin from the vat and put it in the bottle. I never remove the vat from the machine unless I am changing the FEP.

Recently got back into printing and have a qq for you guys- I have a Mars 3 pro which I've had for about 3 years now with no parts replaced but the occasional tray and arm, and around the edges of my plate my prints have been coming out fine, but towards the center holes get filled in/details get blurred. I adjusted the exposure time & thickened the layers from .042 to .050 to make things come out cleaner, which seems to have helped, but not things in the center are starting to get bent/contorted now, with occassional layer failue mid print. Could this be a temperature problem with the resin, maybe my light or something is just fucked on account of the printer being a little old?

What wall thickness do you use for your prints when hollowed?
I just printed a Questoris proxy (not pic related) and almost finished a whole resin bottle on it. 2.5mm is the default but maybe it is too much, maybe we can go lower without warping, also making them less heavy

This seems to only apply to people with sensitive skin. I keep dogs in a crate in the same room with my un-vented 3d printer and have been printing with resin since 2019. They have no worse skin and respiratory conditions than they did prior to then (one has always had skin issues but they aren't worse). It would basically be like having the resin printer right next to your bed every night for six years except several times as much since they are so much smaller.
TL;DR - Masks and venting are completely unnecessary unless you have a lower threshold for irritants than a 40lb dog.

I tried printing this like this and it failed, but I think it was because of a leveling issue.

I tried a second time at 45, but it failed like 40 layers in because the corners at the bottom were at too steep of an angle (I think, idk but that's what failed).

Should I print it like this, straight up, or at a different angle?

i believe it is about good print bed level, once you get your 1st layer to stick and not be too close, youre fine.
there is a thing in (larger) FDM printer called delayed expansion. even when heated to working temperature, the material still continues to expand to a certain point.

So for adhesion, there is glue, cleaning the plate, using mouse ears or a brim...

Of course you're probably going to want nitrile gloves too. And if you don't live in a very reliably sunny place some way to cure your prints. You're almost certainly going to use up a bunch of paper towels or some such to clean your workspace, that's also a cost. Do you have a suitable container for the iso bath just lying around collecting dust? Otherwise that's another expense. Gas mask/respirator? It's certainly recommended. Will the printer live out in a shed or so? Then you might end up wanting a space heater, perhaps a work lamp too. Is it indoors instead? Then you might want to look into some way to contain and vent out the fumes.
Will it all add up to a massive amount? Hardly. But if a new previous-gen Mars makes your wallet cry then you're going to feel it sooner rather than later, and if you decide to just go for absolute maximum cheap-out, well, you'll feel that with each and every print.

Resin fumes are objectively safer than second hand smoke. You do not need to wear a mask much less kit up like you are cooking meth lol. The danger is that prolonged exposure can cause you to become allergic but the only way to truly prevent that is the same thing you would have to do if you became allergic so gloves are a good compromise. Unless you are running a print farm, there shouldn't be enough resin in the air to cause you to become allergic unless you are incredibly unlucky or have AIDS or something.

Don't get a Mars printer, it'll be too small and you will come to resent printing on it
Get a Saturn, the 3U is a good choice depending on how much you save
The 4U is nicer but it doesn't actually offer anything you need over the 3U
If buying the 3U saves you a bit of money which you can invest into a grow tent, DIY wash and cure, brew belt for heating, exhaust fan, respirator and more resin then it's worth it
If it's not really that much more then maybe not the best buy
You will need to learn to replace the FEP though because the 3U comes with ACF which sucks, but then you will need to learn to replace it anyway
Get Sunlu ABS-Like Resin, dark gray preferably

I own this (previously had a Mars 3) and I've tremendous success with it and not a lot of headaches.

One problem I have had that I don't think I really have the correct solution for is with the spring "auto-leveling" I've had mid/large prints not adhere to the build-plate super well. The best solution I could find was to increase the bottom layers to 10 and the bottom layer exposure time to 30 seconds. This is definitely incorrect and leads to a little warping with super precise prints, but I never have anything fail due to adhesion anymore.

Two separate answers. Usually I print bases upside down in filament, it is cheap and easy and let's me print the ones I added magnet slots to. For stuff on the bases like rocks, when I get low on resin I print more rocks so I have a bag full of them. If I need to print a base in resin I do it at 45 degrees but I usually try to avoid doing that.

I have a Saturn Mark 1 (they just called it the Saturn I think). The FEP is torn and the screws in the bed are stripped. I ordered a new FEP that says it will fit, but I'm a little scared to just drill out the screws and hopefully find replacements the right size. Seems like there is little to no helpful info on the Saturn 1, I'm guessing because it's so old now. Can only find parts for the Mark II and I checked, they don't fit.

However! The last bottle I bought was "High Clear" that doesn't yellow but it needed insane exposure levels to not fail, that was the first and only bottle of clear resin I've ever had trouble with, I've used the anycubic and creality standard clears forever with no issues.
Tat high clear resin would be really nice for doing cockpit windows and such you're not going to paint, but for things that will be painted the yellowing factor on the standard stuff is a non-issue, never messed with color tinted clears so no opinion on those.

Health question. Have felt shitty and had intermittent rapid heart rate and dizziness. Have temporarily stayed at my friends house for a few weeks. My friend has a resin based egeloo 3d printer. And an isopropyl alcohol cleaning tank. Are they 100 % sealed? Or still leaking traces fumes?He insists that they are but I have been feeling shitty the last two weeks and I’m starting to think it’s related to this. I have an exercise bike and he said it was fine to put it in the small room with that stuff. He hasn’t used any of the printers since I got here. I have used my exercise bike by that equipment like 10 times or so for about a half hour and I’m starting to think I ended up inhaling a shitload of whatever is passively off gassing in that room. Do you guys have any sort of input here? I’m leaving soon but not sure if I need to move my exercise bike somewhere else. Small house and the room I’m in is also right by that room so I think if it’s passively leaking fumes I probably have been feeling shitty being so close to that crap for the last 20 days or so.


The egeloo has an enclosure but from what I read online they are not 100% sealed and passively give off the same amount of fumes closed if they were running or not.


there is no ventilation setup I can see either running outside so I suspect if they offfas resin or IPA fumes they have just been accumulating in the small room for months. The room is open and connected to the rest of the house and while that’s good, it’s also bad as I suspect the entire house he has is probably full of whatever fumes. not sure if I should ask him if we can open the windows up for a few hours for safety. May even suggest he buy a air quality device for that room to monitor it.

I have felt faint off and on and I’m not sure if it’s something else going on and some random health thing or if it’s related to this.

It is a matter of volume. The volume of VOCs and other irritants put off by a resin printer is far lower than a lot of other very common things you are already encountering. Lysol spray for example, substantially worse for you than the tiny amount of pollutants that the printer makes as a byproduct.

as I mentioned previously, the room I am sleeping in is directly adjacent to the room with the printer and the bike, so that’s why I do not think it’s far fetched that over 20 days my body probably got exposed to more than it should have. Does not seem that unlikely. However I am aware some people choose to sleep with resin printers in their own room. That is their choice to make I guess.
