What was your favorite magic or other sword in a campaign you've played? Other weapons need not apply

A magic greatsword that could shoot beans of radiant damage (sunbeam) every time I took the attack action.
It was also a radiant flametongue and casting focus for my paladin spells
It was pretty fun needing to account for positioning to maximize enemies hit by the beam while minimizing collateral damage

Spearcoin holders in SHAMBLES.

You actually use this for your games? That’s an insane amount of effort.

I gave one of my players a fuckoff huge greatsword that did 4d6 and could add on a cone wave to a hit a couple times a long rest. He decided to pay a lot of money to have it made into two swords.

I called it my "Warhammer of Mercy" because we went into a dungeon and they had a bunch of people being medically tortured and reanimated and I put them out of their pain.

What is your best crafting tip for your players? Do you have a hard rule system you use?

Does your character have a childhood crush back at home?

I play a Pal/Cleric Warforged. He has a few girls that want to try the highly accurate anatomy pieces, but he feels no real desire to do anything with them.
>>
>>96754966
My dark elf hooked up with a halfling back home before he was abducted by pirates in Rimworld style gravship and shuttled off halfway around the world and sold as a slave soldier before eventually ending up as a player character
All because I wanted an excuse for why my character knew halfling because I rolled for languages I knew besides elven
>>
>>96754960
I find online resources and modify them as I see fit. Magic goods have softer rules than making basic gear, potions, poisons, etc. I base time to craft off of giving my players 2h/adventuring day to work and 8h/stationary day.
>>
>>96755013
I'm working on a crafting system that involves spells, material components, and monster bits for "essence." So far, it's looking like something that will keep my players interested.

>2h/adventuring day
Normally, I tell them they can work a little while they rest. Normally if they spend 6 hours sleeping, I allow them 2 hours working in downtime. But some stuff requires tools that are harder to use on the road.

Still, I introduced several materials like iron weed and bone plant that allow for crafting on the go with light effort, although they're not as good.

After one session I decided it's so much better than before and that the mechanics fit the character I wanted to RP much better than the old paladin.
>>
>>96755462
I'm pleasantly surprised by the new paladin
I thought the smite changes would've made it less fun but it feels like they shifted a lot of power away from it to their other stuff. Feels less shitty to use spells more often now.
I would really like to see an updated Redemption paladin get an unarmored defense feature back from its old UA since we now have unarmored defense bard options and it feels very fitting for the subclass thematically

>Oath of peace
Okay I get why that's nice mechanically but I always had trouble imagining that, unlike for monks. Guess redemption paladin are kind of like monks, though.
Semirelated, a 1-3 level warlock is now great for paladins if you don't want to focus on weapon feats.
>level 1 you can take Pact of the Blade
>level 2 you can take Agonizing Blast and the Tough feat through Lesson of the First Ones invocation
>level 3 you get level 2 pact slots
>bonus points for being able to take a Celestial patron so your ebin multiclass isn't thematically far-fetched anymore
Still, the baseline paladin now has a really sick progression and I think it's way more charisma focused now.
>>
>>96755462
I'm pretty happy with most changes to classes, but the Divine Smite change into a spell was the first thing I overruled as a DM. If the paladin wants to waste all his slots on smites, I'm all for it.
>>
>>96755445
Heroforge is unfortunately incapable of rendering most of the races in my setting.
>>
>>96755583
I understand why they shifted subclasses to 3 for everybody, but I think paladin and warlock are two that just don't fit without a subclass
Just give everyone a subclass at level 1 and do give it some arbitrary garbage feature on par with a 2014 background feature and suddenly so many narrative issues some classes have disappear
>>
Just start every game at level 3
>>
>>96755930
Crazy Concept: Only one Subclass per Character. Want a 3 fighter / 3 rogue? Sure, but only one gets a subclass, other gets small class based boons.

Only reason behind this is each subclass seems so complete in itself, mixing them feels weird to me.
>>
>>96756007
I started DMing my first game of 5.5E earlier this year and I wanted to start everyone off at level 1 to experience the full game plus I had a couple new players. Ironically Levels 1-3 went by without issue and players started dying at levels 4-5 so I can confirm just start at level 3.
>>
>>96756106
But would you allow multiclassing if starting at level 3? Some will have subclasses while others won't be as powerful, still you don't want to stifle them.
>>
>>96756007
That's what they recommend but despite that there is fun to be had at level 1. It can be nice starting as a weak starter adventurer and getting more powerful as time goes on.
>>
>>96755930
>nk paladin and warlock are two that just don't fit without a subclass
NTA, but I find this problem to be the largest with the Sorcerer. If you got powers from a curse or blessing or boon or whatever, it's going to be strange that at level 1 and 2 you display none of those traits. If you got cursed by a Demon to have random chaotic magic that could suddenly go off at a moment's notice and hurt those around you, and you start at level 1. You don't have any powers that actually do that, you have regular Sorcery powers that you have under control, then suddenly at level 3 that's when the Demon's chaotic/wild magic activates.
That's strange and less narratively satisfying imo. At least for Warlocks you can give the same justification you'd give for a Cleric, the Patron just hasn't given you the power to do the more unique stuff yet, they control what you get and when you get it. Sorcerer's powers are their own once they get them.
>>
>>96756123
Yes I don't restrict multi-classing. I told this to my players and none of them multi-classed at all for a while until one player's characters died and he made a new already multi-classed character (fighter/warlock).
>>
>>96756126
Yes, but since adventures will be really low key at that level, you need a good DM. Otherwise that's a boring slog. Yet, super fun if you fight like "Demon Rats" and it's basic but fun.
>>
>>96756145
Fight/Lock, huh? Most would go for that Pal dip. I always make my players lose a single level for each death to avoid too many shenanigans.
>>
>>96754966
Not back home, but in her backstory my dragonborn sorc had a crush on a previous travelling companion and was gently rejected due in part to being just out of adolescence. All this I sprung on the DM when this NPC was surprise-reintroduced and long story short my sorc didn't get a fairytale romance but did laid at the end of an emotional rollercoaster no one signed up for.
Would roleplay again.
>>
>>96756159
Yeah I even mentioned that paladin synergizes well with warlock but he went fighter/warlock anyway. I don't want to push any player in any particular direction and he is one of my new players so I think he's just reading the PHB and trying things out for himself.
>>
>>96756160
Hi Mako
>>
>>96755462
I think one smite per turn is better design but Divine Smite being a BA spell is bad and unnecessary. It should work like Eldritch Smite and you should be able to stack two smites at most by spending a BA.
>>
>>96756183
I'll go to bat arguing Smite should be a very limited ability, but twice as powerful, only against creatures that have the opposite alignment. I know, I know, "just go back to 3.5,"

What's another name that you could call the Lucky feat for a character who's not exactly lucky? I'm thinking a Fighter or Barbarian who doesn't use Luck, but maybe...Tenacity? Resolve? Determination?

Determined or tenacious.
>>
>>96756147
In my recent game I had my players fighting excrementals, goblins, diseased rats. Oozes of questionable substance in the sewers. It was a good time. Someone did instantly die to a pit trap due to a bad roll but he was a good sport about it and made a new level 1 character.
>>
>>96756159
I have seen the fighter/lock mix before. Even with a bit of sorcerer too. It was for a bit more survivability and burst from action surge. Paladin is the classic but doesn’t fit every character concept.

A frail old lady as a martial class is retarded. We all know they did it as a box ticking exercise.

Seems fine.
>>
>>96757058
Who said she's frail? High level martial or hybrid characters who's older can exist and are in fact no weaker than they were in their younger years. If we can look past a 90 year old Mage we can look past a 60 year old Warrior or Paladin.
