>What helps you choose and focus on the ongoing project? How do you decide what to work on?

Honestly only just really learning to focus. There is a lot of solo time and there are a lot of parasocial temptations, lots of new stuff coming down the pipeline to distract you - you would go crazy trying to do it all.

Even with my goals set fairly modestly: make a few good sized, neatly painted skirmish matchups for the dark ages and 19th century to set alongside my little pool of agnostic sci fi and fantasy minis - temptation abounds.

Someone older than me told me in his time, people didn't really butterfly around between genres and periods. Maybe you did American Civil War and American War of Independence. Or just Ancients, or just Napoleonics or WW2 and were "that guy."

People collected amazing armies this way and could put on some great battles, slowly and patiently.

I like too many different things to fully commit to just one, but I am mindful that given a platoon every other month is my output... I don't need to chase everything.

On the total reverse... someone introduced me to the idea of the "two or three box army" and it allows for you to set a oainting target you can reach while getting matchups with a little asymmetry for play.

My late roman army is mostly heavy infantry and light cavalry, my goths the reverse. It's nice to skew things a bit even when the opposing sides are similar.

To the anon that brought the War in the Vendée to my attention last thread, thank you so much, I'm obsessed now. That's all I've been reading about these last few days.
It's crazy I've never even heard of it, my wife who is French has never heard of it either, it's not even taught in French schools. It's interesting to see conflicts in world history that have very clear black and white good vs evil sides.
>>
What are the most low IQ normie historical wargame eras?
I think the winners have to be
>WW2
>Vikings
Runner up
>Early Imperial Rome
>>

French schools go for a massive jump from Louis XVI to WW1. The whole Napolonic era is barely mentioned and there's a couple pages worth of "the democratic experiments" that led from the 1st Republic to the 5th.
There's another couple pages to say life was easier and more meritocratic from the 60s to 80s but no deep dive on Indochina or Algeria either. It's shit.

If you're wife stayed a bit more before joining you she'll be aware though since a Vendean business tycoon and far right political figure built a massive theme park there to celebrate French History. Same guy publicly said every Vendean grows up feeling ashame as kids that their ancestors didn't side with the Revolution but he himself was making sure they won't have to feel this way anymore. If memory serves his theme park financed a movie maybe a couple years ago about this war, but this time the script showed Vendeans being in the right and Revolutionnaries being absolute mongrels.

The Vendéens got the last laugh, because they sufferer in life but fought like lions, and now they will spend eternity sitting besides the Lord God in Paradise ~ meanwhile the Republican French, from the 1790s to present day will burn in hellfire

>leftist proto-commies take control of the government
>La Terreur happens and they behead thousands of people who disagree with them
>even leftists that helped the revolution succeed start to get beheaded by turbo leftists for not being left enough
>Atheist leftist government starts cracking down on the Church, priests who don't swear loyalty to the state over God are killed and replaced with state approved priests
>the church owns 10% of land in France and is the only real source of charity and public services in France, provide free education, medicine, etc. to rural French communities
>I'm the Vendee province, it's very rural and poor farming communities, very very devout Catholics who are very close to local priests
>Vendee aristocrats are very poor compared to other French nobles, they are well loved by Vendee peasants and serve them well
>revolutionary state spontaneously confiscates all church property, schools, hospitals, etc. disappear
>Revolutionary state starts beheading priests who don't swear loyalty to state in Vendee- strike 1
>revolutionary state demands 300k conscripts to fight in Belgium for the Republican state, selectively choosing young men who are pro-church - strike 2
>revolutionary state spontaneously murders their beloved King Louis- strike 3
>Vendee men take up arms, led by young rural noble blooded chads to defend their faith, family, way of life (pic related)
>absolutely mop the floor with revolutionary army, over and over and over
>one mistep, get surrounded in fog and lose a decisive battle fighting against 3 to 1 odds
>revolutionary state moves in and genocides 40% of the Vendée region indiscriminately, man woman and child

I've never heard of this before, are there any good books in English about this?
>>
>>96762607
I've been researching very hard and unfortunately most of the books are in French. I settled on these two, but as I ordered yesterday I have yet to read them:
I bought "Louis XVI; or the End of the World" by Bernard Faÿ (1968) and "War in the Vendée, 1792-1796: The History of uprising in western France during the French Revolution, led by royalist and Catholic forces" by Charles-Théodore Beauvais de Préau (1817).
>>
>>96761708
Anyone know why dudes in this period always wore those paints that split their cock and balls in half? I've seen it in tons of paintings and illustrations, and even movies like The Patriot has them wearing pants that ride up their balls.
Why did they wear those? Seems very uncomfortable.

I wanna make a gameboard for my lgs for bolt action. I bought the board already but I dont know how to start with designing it. I was thinking about copying a company of heroes map, but also was thinking about finding a picture of a ww2 battleground. but with the latter option getting the topography right would be a pain. then theres also the problem with scale, and I’ve never done anything like this before. not sure really where to start, I got the poster board, scrap foam and cardboard, and a passing knowledge of paper mache. Any ideas?
>>
>>96760691
>not ACW/Napo

What are you even doing?
>>
>>96763804
Maybe give more information? How big should the board be? What do you want to do? Desert? Normandy? Village in Prussia? Ruins of Stalingrad? Summer? Winter? etc.
>>
>>96764539
50-60 inches each side, its square. was thinking summer in belgium or some part of france. grass, flowers. cottages, maybe a small town with a few buildings and roads. something like that. I dont have an actual place in mind thats half the problem
>>
>>96764725
Maybe look around youtube for inspiration first? I'm sure there are some great looking WW2 gaming boards out there.

This is in german, but he is building some massive normandy style board right now, and did build other ww2 themed tables in the past:

>>
>>96763804
Do you want a "generic" board that can be used for "meeting engagements" and other pick-up battles? If so, you probably want something that showcases a range of terrain types; a few buildings at one end, a wood at the other, and some fields and hedges etc.

If you want to do a specific scenario, you can have a LOT more fun, with e.g. V-weapon sites, submarine pens, a command post, etc.

yeah I was trying to do something more generic. this is my first try at doing this type of thing so I want to do a little of everything. maybe have a woodland on one side, a farmhouse on one corner, a little urban area in the center that would be good for defending, an open field area with maybe a couple craters. hell maybe even a river if I can figure out how to use the epoxy stuff

The Mega trove has Hoplomachia in the "Perfect Captain" folder. Ancients folder has Macedonian-Punic Wars set from Crusader.

I have "Hoplite Warfare", it's mentioned in the screenshot the fella posted, and it's follow-up "Hellenistic Warfare" . Bought them in the 80's and I doubt they've aged well.

I'm a total luddite when it comes to computers but will give scanning them a go, if you're interested that is ; mind they're 40 year old.

I just learned that wind coming perpendicular to the sails results in higher speed than having the wind at your back. It feels like in so many naval wargames, wind at your backs is considered the best, are there any that have winds at your 90/270 degrees being the best for speed?
>>
>>96769237
Not true at all, it depends on the rigging, as many different riggings perform best in different ideal wind conditions. Square rigging performs best when running and struggles greatly when hard tacking. It would be silly to base a game where the majority of ships are square rig or brigantines off of performance metrics you receive hoisting a fore and aft.
It would be interesting to give slightly different bonuses to, say, a schooner vs a man'o'war, but it would be too convoluted and rules bloated to try to portray all the intricate variants on sails plans in your ruleset if you ask me. Even in a slop rig the ideal point of sail is always 45° off the wind except when running, not perpendicular

I talked about it a while back, but my group is making progress on the North Africa campaign for Bolt Action plan.

We're going to use Axis & Allies: North Africa as the base of the campaign system, but rather than resolving attacks country by country, we'll be playing games of Bolt Action to resolve them, zooming in on the crucial engagement each time. Having an advantage in the strategic map will translate to a slight advantage in the tactical battles. Rather than more points or the like, it'll mostly be letting you shape the scenario, picking the deployment type or whatever. If we don't have an appropriate player, like the Italian player can't show up, other Axis players can fill the role, but if you do bring the right force, you get an advantage.

We're gonna start it with Operation Torch in November of 1942 and run for seven weeks. Should be fun. We'll start in November of real life, too.

You have never noticed only cat "people" do that shit? If you have a cat it is guaranteed you'll post that ungrateful freeloader anywhere unappropriate and uncalled for. Call it toxoplasmosis parasite side effect or the natural low self esteem of parental love deprived patients ready to engulf themselves in a one way toxic relationship, it's all the same: they will act up like a woman and take pictures where the topic at hands is a pityful excuse to expose their filthy pussy.

I have a FB account for wargaming purpose and browsing the wargaming group you could find 50+ photos like the one above without even trying but 0 of dogs. The divide is real.
