I'm still trying to imagine a boardstate where Farewell is the only possible answer. So far basically the only thing I could come up with was "Infinite number of copies of Pithing Needle for every card with an activated ability, and infinite copies of Nevermore naming every card but Farewell". Farewell being a sorcery with no inbuilt protection actually prevents it from answering most situations beyond the bare minimum "ha ha I played Avacyn" type of setup which is very basic. I can't even think of a boardstate that would take 2+ cards or over 6 mana to answer that is still answered by Farewell.
