one for our chemically and biologically altered, utterly psychopathic, barely controlled by drugs, indoctrination and brain implants, effectively living weapon boys in blue out there every day not really holding the line against the horrors of the galaxy.
Excellent OP. Glad to be of service.

Cardboard building for Mordheim. Scrap material and craft paint. TS not pro-tier like some guys can make but it beats using textbooks and unpainted boxes as terrain I figure

Anybody working on anything fun? This Nick Bibby ADD86 Minotaur resculpt is killing me.
I know the stock answer is look on telegram but could anyone point me toward stls of the RT era metal Orks? Particularly the ones in the Space Ork Raiders box.

>>96793670John Blanche, so it's probably a multipart conversion.
Some more ancient Blanche stuff, early-mid '80s here in particular, since it is kind of a fascinating look at the bleeding edge of miniatures art at that point.Old soft details lead miniatures, lots of conversions, lots of filling in the details manually with mixed media. Thick gloss varnish. Plenty of building up layering of colours for interesting effects.
Going by the earliest painting articles, a lot of the metallic effect bits might well have just been going over bare metal of the miniatures?I suspect the multiple layers of gloss varnish over everything he uses lends to a distortion effect that rounds out everything; there's not many sharp details in a Blanche miniature, even in later stuff where the sculpts definitely have them.
>>96793670Maybe a conversion of the two Orc weapons crew from:https://ralparthalegacy.com/collections/orcs/products/98-3282and similar. JB used a lot of those old Ral Partha Tom Meier sculpts and the face fits. No better picture because navigating the Ral Partha ranges on lost minis wiki is unpossible.
>>96797310Lost Mini Wiki is agonizingly slow for me.

Its epic scale ever coming back for 40k
>>96796374I have a book about painting miniatures from this period (Painting Heroic Miniatures, '84 or '85 I think) and your idea is accurate to one of the tips they give: scrape off the paint from the edge of a sword painted black to really give it a metal appearance. I assume the metallic pigments of the day were not of good quality if they were resorting to bare pewter/lead to produce the effect.

All grogsDid the Salmander scout tank have a datafax in 2e?I feel like I've seen them painted up in 2e tank schemes but never recall seeing one in the time period
I think this guy would look sweet with a jump pack
>>96799600I thought that was an Imperial Armor/FW creation, putting it into 3rd edition era. Could be wrong of course.
>>96801083Do itChad using space crusade minis for 2nd editionWhich I think actually wasn't super uncommon I think I've seen a few space crusade marines mixed in normal armies in WD images before
>>96799600>>96801341it's a post-2nd edition invention. however there are datafaxes out there for later creations like various Leman Russ or Land Raider variants, sisters of battle vehicles and so on, but I couldn't find one for the Salamander. It'd be really easy to put together though, start with a Chimera and work backwards (exact same hull but change the crew number to fit, ditch the hull lasguns, becomes open topped, crew and most of the damage results). And the special rules, well, command vehicle is easy too, just give it a reroll on seeing if you get a preliminary barrage/the deviation on a barrage (reinforcements come on anyway if I remember right) and the Scout's just gonna have a surprisingly high movement speed, like an extra few inches on the Chimera on its attack/fast speeds (say +3/+6 at a guess?).And well, could also just look to the Griffon mortar since that was a 2nd edition vehicle, it's basically the same layout and you can pretty much copy and paste autocannon and crew into the Mortar spot but make sure the gun gets a limited fire arc (about 90 degrees to the front seem right for the mounting? As an open-topped vehicle the crew in the open compartment can engage things with pistols, as scouts maybe they could even have access to smoke or frag grenades). I think the autocannon might get to ignore a roll of a jam (or rather, having to spend a turn clearing it) on the sustained fire dice for being vehicle mounted, can anyone confirm that?
>>96799600I made this for mine. It's stats are copied from pdf which included lot of russ variants and other vehicles. Love playing it, it can infiltrate so it's great forward scout unit for my mechanized steel legion force.>>96801891Only dreads can ignore first jam on their twinlinked autocannons.
ok, let's say someone wants some of that old (2nd and 3rd) 40K minis. Is there anywhere to buy? I guess second hand is the preffered metod, but are there any recasters or something?
Wyrdstone for Mordheim. I'll make progress on a few ruined buildings tonight. Nothing crazy, but just getting some of kind of terrain table ready
>>96806625No, James nobody is recasting your stuff, stop asking. >3rdJeez. I've always felt like a fake grog for starting in 3rd but now I see kids claiming grog status for starting in 5th, so I guess I am old. Anyway, yes eBay is flooded with cheap minis from 3rd and third party minis are out there compatible with them as well. More plastic than you could ever paint
>>96806625You can go to swap-meets at conventions... but ebay is generally pretty good.... if you're willing to wait 5 years to get something for £14, rather than the £200 BIN price.
I don't know if this the actual place to ask, but it seems like the best place to do so. I've been playing Third Edition with some friends, and while fun a few rules (Mostly involving melee) confuse me:1: If you win combat against a Tyrranid in Synapse range, does that mean they don't retreat and combat ALWAYS ends in a draw? 2: On that same note: Is it possible to retreat from combat without losing a fight?3: Is there any good place to more easily read ALL of the rules. Actual layout of the books is... questionable.
>>96806865I think grog only counts for the eras of RT and 2nd edition, the related games that also came out at the time, 3rd til probably 7th is middlehammerThe style in pre 3rd edition is just so different I don't know how people call anything after 2nd edition as grog-like when it's clearly it's own different era and not oldhammer at all
>>96806625Just do not be stupid as I was. It's simple, make a plan, a list of minis you want and then buy them in as bighest batch you can find. I have bought lots of individual minis that are usually more expensive than when you buy in batch plus I spent a shitload of money on postage. Pne more thnig, be patient. The flownof old minis is stable and you will for sure find what you need. Just look for the once in a lifetime offer.and do not be stupid as me to miss those.
>>96806625ebay but be prepared to hand over your kidney, right arm and first born child. although you can take it slow and get the odd auction bargains instead of buy it now scalper prices
My friend insists there was old official lore (either explicit or implicit) that the comet that hit Mordheim was actually a crashing 40k warship. I've told him I'm super skeptical of this and haven't seen it suggested anywhere but he swears it was somewhere (he just can't remember it). Does anyone have any clue on this?I'm aware general of WHFB-40k crossover Easter eggs, but this is a really specific one.
I'll ask here as well:Any grogs that can help me find an old, metal goblin model (probably not citadel, but maybe) that I saw once? It was a night goblin bending over and rudely sticking out his butt. It was not the squig rider with his ass out; he was just standing on the ground.
>>96810613ouch, fuck that. I don't play since the early 3rd ed days (I was a 2nd ed player back in the day) and was looking to get some metal nostalgia. Thanks anon.
>>96812442I randomly get decent scores just by lurking and checking categories for stuff that's misspelled or mid-sized lots with "trash" minis in the foreground and interesting stuff in the back
Hey grogers, need sour help. Does someone here recall old Rogue trader boxes that was sold for non english market to have a piece of paper with printed disclaimer in that language. This paper was inside the wrap. I am planing to buy an old box still sealed with this paper inside, but not sure if this is original GW. I am afraid that I will find a rock inside the box.
>>96811949No unless Be'lakor came from 40k. The fluff was always that the Dark Master was cast out from the heavens (as a Paradise Lost reference) and landed in Mordheim.
>>96811949No, it's very explicitly a chunk of warpstone. This is absolutely not a thing.Mordheim was from an era where 40k and Fantasy had really quite drifted apart from each other (or been wedged more like it). The only era-relevant 40k~ish crossovers were in WHFB proper with some "magic items" found as a result of the Albion campaign. Plus the long-standing background of the warhammer world itself as an Old One thing with the warp gate collapse leading to the realms of chaos at the poles. Even Chaos had lost a lot of its 40k crossover stuff in fantasy and 40k (advent of 3rd edition removing all the extra stuff from the codex) by the point of Mordheim.
>>96815316Codex Chaos (1996) came out only three years before Mordheim and has a reference to Warhammer World existing within 40k.
>>96815402And the chaos codex for 3rd edition 40k was the same year as Mordheim, and wasn't largely a rationalisation and compression of Rogue Trader era material from a decade earlier. Things were changing.
>>96815316There were earlier hints, like Amazons and Chaos warbands in WFB sometimes getting 40k tech, but iirc, it was only hinted at.
Wasn't the majority of the Fantasy/40k crossover material from the 3rd and RT?
>>96817905>Wasn't the majority of the Fantasy/40k crossover material from the 3rd and RT?In terms of both rules and fluff, yes. A few of their books the Realm of Chaos ones and Siege could be used in both games.

>>96820231No because all of the stuff on cults gets instantly blasted by either GW or the scanner cartel It does happen but they're super short lived
>>96781974Anyone have a facebook and could dump the entirety of Original Oldhammer Artwork's media/posts to an archive? Would be a chore for sure, but adblock and selective html/jss blocking can only get me so deep.

Mordheim is built with campaigns in mind, but I know somebody interested in playing against me. However we won't get chances to play consistently. On top of the default 500gc to build a warband, should I make it custom to have an extra 100-200gc for equipment to let us feel like we are playing with some more mid-tier warbands instead of beginner ones?

Would anyone be opposed to back-converting current units to older editions? And would the RT points buy work well enough or should someone round it off with the WD Creature Feature or something?I tried asking in the 4e SRD thread and got nothing. Mostly curious because I'd always wanted Marines to be closer to the Necromunda statline and DE were getting shafted through 3e/4e.Love the beakies, btw. Keep up the good work!
>>96847397Nah, nothing wrong with that. The points system in RT can you get you near enough to pretty well whatever you want.
>>96847397Marines have the same statline in Necromunda as in 40k.
>>96842045Make one the old-school way with cardboard and random guns you found on dollar store robots. I have pretty much the entire archive of the old 40k Building-with-cardboard yahoo group on this hard drive, I put it and a bunch of other shit up on gofile. Keep in mind that the Baneblade and Land Raider white dwarf scans are too distorted to make the model perfectly, but they can serve as a guide. There's a pretty decent Mk 1 Land Raider in the "papertanks" folder, Bile's site had an okay but very primitive template. There are a whole bunch of /grog/-related SF and Fantasy terrain and vehicles in here, almost all of it is from before 2010 with a few stragglers from /po/ and whatnot. No dolphin porn that I am aware of. May have missing bits.https://gofile.io/d/TrjwL7
>>96849276Never really made much sense that... the finest gangers are meant to get skimmed off the top, to become Imperial Guard recruits. Meanwhile the Necromunda stats make them about as tough as some of the higher ranking Imperial agents.
>>96842045why not build your own out of styrene! thats what they woulda done back in the day. the basic silhouette is pretty simple, and the worst part would probably be the treads. Plus, you'll always be able to say "I built that!"a brief lesson- one day I built a cassette rack with my father, spent my nights after school adding stain (then realizing i added too much and destaining), cutting wood and screwing it together, and realized that some of the shelves were uneven, or even ajar such that the back wouldnt sit flush. It still worked as a cassette rack though, and even if it was imperfect, it was mine. To tie this anecdote back into /GROG/ I keep my Bolt Thrower cassettes on it.
>>96842571There a youtube channel called scruffy crow where he makes a dwarf army out of the em4 dwarf minis with a few other bits included... Looks pretty tidy on table, think he uses it for oathmatk
>>96848779Kinda figured that was the intent. It really is a shame how the more fun and interesting design elements have been bled out over the years.>>96849276Either 1st or 2nd edition of Necro had a Marine statline in the back of the book for special scenarios. I can't remember exactly, but it was something like:>M 5 or 6, WS/BS 5, S/T 4, W 3, I 5, A 3, Ld 9, Sv 3+ rerollable/5+;...plus some morale skills and an upgraded bolter. All in all it was like the Marines from Inquisitor; a one model warband.I thought it'd be neat to have a truescale Marine list for maybe 3rd or 4th if other Anons are revisiting the content. >>96850923Maybe it's mostly the top Juves? They'd be tough and skilled but still young enough to learn how to conduct themselves in a military structure. Gang leaders might be badasses, but they also tend to have the personality of pro wrestlers. >Goliath Company, this is HQ – hold the trench at point TF-103H and provide fire support. Do you copy?>YOU THINK MUNG THE MOONCRUSHER IS A PANSY? HIDING IN A HOLE? AFFIX THEM BAYONETS, BOYS! WE'RE GETTIN' BUSY TODAY!>Goliath Company? Goliath Company, come back!>OOOOH YEEEEEAH!
>>96853463
>>96853463>I thought it'd be neat to have a truescale Marine list for maybe 3rd or 4th if other Anons are revisiting the content. There's also the "Movie Marine" army list for late 3e/early 4e in one of the old White Dwarf articles.
>>96853664Is that the only one? I could swear there was a stronger profile.>>96854112I remember that article, but I thought the Necro profile was somewhere between it and the Codex version.Well, fuck. I might just have to start from scratch.
>>96853463Shit, now I want to do an RT guard company where each of the sarges is themed around a famous pro wrestler and have the company commander be wearing a championship belt.
>>96842549Ordered one of these, I don't have high hopes for it but we'll see how it turns out. Might have to apply thicc basecoat to hide print lines. I don't think I'll ever manage to score real one so I guess this is as good as they come, especially for the price.
>>96856269>WARSLAMMER 40,000Do it! Hell, if you have the time the whole squad could be themed around the different outfits or gimmicks of that wrestler. >Randy Savage squad could be mistaken for Slaanesh, a riot of colors and bling everywhere – the Sgt has a custom chainsword he calls "the BoneSaw">Hulk Hogan squad are Catachans with lots of dough (HOLLYWOOD) who never advance after a combat (they're givin' the ol' LEG DROP to the fallen!)>The Undertakers are big guys who cause Fear, equipped with power gloves and having a knack for dynamic reserve deployment>The Headbangers are, well, Chaos Marauders with laspistols>Steve Austin squad are jacked Delaques, with -1 Movement due to bad knees and their bases being cluttered with beercans>Scott Steiner is a single S/T 5 powerhouse with a squad of grechin call girls; his only weapon are hallucinogen grenades, to represent the utter confusion of anyone near him once he's on the mic....these are starting to sound like really fun Space Marine chapters, ngl.
Do you think there's a way to take that original dread design and make it a bit more chunky and powerful looking without just making it large? Something that could work as a conversion maybe?Maybe mimicking certain shapes on the power armour to create continuity, beefing up the shoulders... it's already as tall as a boxnought (the long legged original anyway rather than the stumpy one) so I don't think it'd need height added.I'm considering the horus heresy design that shares the name (based off the original epic one) a radical redesign so not so relevant.
>>96867038How did you get a paint job so smooth on those metal ones?
>>96870288I like the way Android Arts approached it. Similar to a few of the current RT Dread fan sculpts, but with a more considered silhouette.
>>96870719
>>96870288Plus, given that it needs to fit an entire person inside the torso, it requires a certain scale from a mechanical design perspective.

How's everything going lads? Lately I've been playing the Doom of Mymeara campaign from Imperial Armour 11 with a lad from the club, using 5th ed rules. So far I'm winning, with two victories and a tie.Yesterday we fought the second special scenario. The scenario was the following: the table has sparse terrain in the center axis, representing a route between two Imperial outposts. Each side (Guard and Eldar) deployed on a short table edge. The Guard has to break from the ambush, and gets 3 VP for every tank or troops unit in the Eldar deployment zone at the end of turn 6. The Eldar have to destroy as many IG units as possible, and get 1 VP per destroyed unit.
My opponent brought an armoured regiment with a bazillion Basilisks and two Malcadors, plus a bunch mechanized infantry and a platoon of footsloggers who got annihilated by my aspect warriors. My Swooping Hawks got nuked by a Basilisk, but the two survivors led by Baharroth managed to blow up a couple of Basilisks with their haywire grenades, as you can see in this pic.
Meanwhile the bulk of my forces held fast in my side of the board, blowing up everyone who came near while being blown up by indirect fire from the Basilisks.
In the end my opponent made a final push to get his Chimeras and infantry in my deployement zone, protected by the surviving Malcadore (the other one was blown up in a single lucky shot by my Falcon). He almost managed to put enough guys in there to tie, but he started his push a turn too late and I was able to rebuke his advance. If he had pushed forward with all his Basilisks I would have been unable to do anything, but thankfully he was too focused on killing my Aspect Warriors. The game ended when my immovilized Falcon blew up one of the Chimeras, and the poor surviving guardsmen got out of the wreck only to get charged by my Farseer and 5 Warlocks with witch blades, which made minced meat of them. The MVP of the game was my Wraithlord, which survived a ridiculous amount of Basilisk fire that would have killed my antitank weapons instead.

>>96894256Twisty waist 2nd edition Space Hulk Terminators. Nice. Nice job all around obviously.
>>96894268Very cool stuff, anon. I like how you've textured that imperial bastion. Thanks for sharing with us.
>>96894237This happened to my mate from Birmingham.
>>96894268Lovely stuff anon, you have a great collection.Don't think you've posted the NL termi captain before though, that's a great conversion
>>96894262This is a good shot, I've always wondered if the old Blood Angels captain could be given a 2nd edition close combat weapon, and it seems that the left hand is positioned so that it could be done.
>>96898991That's not the original arm. It sits too close to get a pistol on it on anything but a weird angle. But obviously, the 2E plastic Marine arm there doesn't look overly awkward.

Is this a GW ork or something else,
>>96912378Im not sure about the head but everything else is. Hands and weapons are from plastic RT ork kit. Torso seems like 2nd ed Ork, tho I'm not sure which one

>>96895688Got a name or a hint? Spent like 30 minutes on yeggi and cant find exact matches. The pics look way more like the Warscenery ones. Though Wolf guy on cults has some much cheaper ones designed for 15mm
>>96920097NTA but there is Battlefield in a Box. They do the Dawn of War space marine base, plus Tau and I think Eldar bases. Not stl files, but sold in a box. They are prepainted though, so you might need to strip them.

>>96920266>>96924241Thanks.I'll keep looking but I'm pretty sure it's WarScenery. They still have a few terrain pieces on cults but 99% is on their own site now.
I got the base colors in and managed to pull decent job at painting the hazard stripes last night, I think. Maybe I should've used more black instead of yellow like in my reference picture but it's still alright. It's only missing couple metallics and then I can start highlighting and shading. I plan to do just a minimal weathering, mostly on tracks, and add couple small transfers where ever they might fit.
>>96926569I highly recommend "TAMIYA weathering master" for things like vehicles, hobby lobby might have them in stock and they usually look more convincing than just drybrushing on brown or spattering on a mud brown or something
>>96926994Tell you a filthy secret, earthtone eyeshadow from the dollar store is a really solid weathering powder.
>>96927181Ah nice, I've been using Pastels. Only frequented the makeup department for drybrush Brushes in all sizes before.t. other el cheapo Anon
>>96927181>>96927344I used those disposable nail files to sand mould lines off, until I bought proper files. Those large make up brushes are great too yeah

>>96878688some good stuff, also those Grobnik minis advertised at the back of the issue are pretty much exactly what I picture a hypothetical Rogue Trader era version of Necrons to be like(though obviously they'd also work great as Chaos Androids)
>>96938211Yup, Gardens of Hecate sits perfectly on the old school simple yet polished sculpts line. Wish I would have made a bigger order from ramshackle before orange man. Ordering out from the UK and Japan (the two kings of hobby supply) is just too spendy to justify currently.

>>96842571I bought 50 each of their dwarfs. I painted the 50 crossbow ones.In true old school fashion they're all identical. And I absolutely love them. The dwarfs fit fine with old GW and other metal dwarfs from different manufacturers. The orcs might fit with very old GW but will be dwarfed by current GW orcs and orks

I need help finding old lore about the Fellblade. According to an anon a while ago (https://archive.4plebs.org/tg/thread/95715763/#95717376), there's a mention of it in an edition of Space Marine. Can anyone find which book the mention is in and which pages it's on? Thanks in advance!
>>96949896I Ctrl-F'd all the 1st and 2nd edition Epic Space Marine books with zero results for Fellblade. Maybe your princess is in another castle?
>>96947525Put the imprint on a flat block in Blender or some other modelling software and post it so people can make bases and base toppers out of it using booleans. Then again, it's not an open IP, so you may or may not be able to post it.
>>96949896I think It's inspired by a pic from the original Space Marine rules from '89 when the Baneblade was still called a Glaive and the Shadowsword was a Falchion (white Dwarf 120) where there in artwork is a very rounded turret version of the Baneblade depicted; these would go on to inspire the Fellblade's first actual appearance in the Horus Heresy Card Game (where a lot of the Horus heresy stuff was actually really fleshed out originally).
>>96950207That is a subdivided plane with a displacement modifier for actual depth in the Blender viewport. Converting the color scan with PS and then Materialize. Wanted to see what a new computer could handle as far as heavier subdivisions to get super high detail meshes. That's like 20 million tris. Obviously would be decimated once the detail is locked in. And more for 3d printing old card stock terrain with exact detail and proper depth than making base toppers. Pic related is an a quad from the old Dungeon floor plans done on my old laptop. And no worries about copyright this is more for exploring potential infringements for fun and cheeky distribution. 3D scanners can't have all the fun.

>>96781974How do i learn 2e/rogue trader? Any tutorials?
>>96962169Minisodes, 2nd ed wargaming, olden demon all did videos relatively lately. 2nd ed isnt that hard to grasp but the depth of rules can be overwhelming. You can ignore harder stuff like grenades doing more damage indoors, psychic phase, special characters, skimmers going out of control and you absolutely should use dice to visualize the melee combat scores. You should also have stats handy. Just play small games even for for 2nd ed, like 500pt tops to learn it.
>>96962169read the rulebook?
>>96962169You read the battle bible to learns 2nd edition. Pretty easy. Rouge trader i've never played so i do not know

Would it be an unforgiveable sin to play 2nd ed 40k rules with modern models? Don't have anything against the old sculpts but literally can't find anything online that doesn't cost me an arm and a leg and my firstborn child. Also is there a collection anywhere of all the space marine chapters that were created during that time period, or do I just gotta dive through wiki's to find the earliest mentions of them all?

Currently unfucking mkojiro's "1to1" RT Land Raider to be an actual visual match to the original. Much better than his Rhino luckily.
>>96985090oh, i thought his stuff was good, i really liked his few steel legion lads that i could get.
>>96985507Its variable, dude hates parts fitting nicely. I have felt pretty ripped off with every vehicle kit I have bought from him.The Land Raider is just weird where he claimed to have calipered out the original plastic (which appears to be true), but half assed the surface detail. Also, he added a semi functional door hinge but shortened the floor plate so there is no longer a full interior floor. Which makes the opening door pointless. All his stuff just feels 90% finished.
>>96985090post it when you finish. or at least don't hide it behind facebook like he does and put in on purple site or something.
>>96985090I recently printed his wave serpents for my iyanden
>>96986670They're super cute, but I can see the polygons. I do love epic designs upscaled to 40k scale. STL sellers = "It's ok for a 25mm figure to be 100 megs." Also STL sellers = "A 90mm vehicle over 300 megs is insane! My polycount!"Simple edge loops and a subsurf would smooth that right out. >>96985891For sure. The only reason I am working on this is all the Land Raider discussion over the last month. That and I want a Tony Cotrell Spartan.

This last year I've been pushing up my scenary game and nowadays I can set up a pretty decent agri-world board. Now I'm starting an old dream project of mine, a full Cityfight board inspired on the classic Tzaragrad and Vogen tables. This is what I got so far.
Hey guys, I'm playing crusade with a friend and we were thinking about switching to 4th edition. Now there have been quite a few new units (and factions) over the years, is there any collection of newer additions to the game being converted to fit into 4th edition?
has anyone ever made an OSR style spiritual successor/re-organization/battle bible etc style game for rogue trader, or even one trying to recreate the free-form style of skirmish game? I swear there was one I saw years ago on wargames vault, but I can't remember the name

>>97006310thats the one i was thinking of, yeah. Couldn't remember the name, appreciate it.

>>97006291Renegade Scout is kind of a retroclone of Rogue Trader. It's easy to port RT stat lines over to it and the first edition of it had a guide for doing so. Subsequent updates have removed that guide and kind of tried to develop its own identity.

Why wouldn't you take terminator armoured characters in 2nd ed. Its stong
>>97018289Costs at least 50 points, bumbs their victory points up, cannot be teleported anyway, cannot fit into most vehicles and when your opponent wises up they start using haywire grenades. Its only good when surrounded with other terminators. We did use khorne chaos lord in terminator armor to protect berzerkers which quite a risk to take but paid off

>>96894195i like this sort of thing in scifi where they have castles but mixed with ww2 aesthetics is there a name for this?
so i got into warhammer during 2004 so im guessing thats somewhere during 4th ed and "midhammer" to you guys. my question is did they replace a ton of their designers at some point after 2010? because the vast majority of the new designs and models they make now look really bad and to match the prior aesthetic of the armies theyre made for. too many of them are hyper detailed with weird arbitrary parts that would never have been on the older models. (pic related)are they just targeting a different audience, did they replace their older designers, or both? im going to probably restart my old armies and i will most likely do it in 4th ed but may add in some later models that are cherrypicked as well as some earlier stuff as well from the 90s.i feel like chaos in particular has gotten nicer models that mesh better compared to the other factions.
>>97018869You've basically hit upon the edge of the big fucking deal with modern GW here. It's a lot of things, more than just two options. The old crew started leaving well before 2010 but yeah it was a big shift. Around that point is where the company kinda shit the bed; the old guard design crew left for a less oppressive environment outside of GW or at the very least shifted over to forgeworld, everything bar the core games got shaved off and then things went down shit creek and a lot of the player base just outright bailed on them (particularly with the death of WHFB and the shitshow of 5th & 6th edition 40k introducing shit that should have remained Forgeworld only as marketing decided it needed ramming into mainline gameplay for the sales) You've also got the massive problem of GW's copyright and trademark paranoia landing them in a mess with the Chapterhouse lawsuit and Spots the Space Marine incident that the results of meant they felt absolutely compelled to start renaming and in some cases ditching and reworking things. Never underestimate GW's capacity for absurd degree of paranoia and legal bullying with regards to their core motivations even beyond profit. So post-2015ish they also ditched the CEO for being absolute dogshit even by brit CEO standards and started really reworking things. But they're now institutionally biased against individual artist/designers being able to make a name for themselves with their work, partly because of their inability to retain talent of any form. And now with 40k in particular, they're incredibly risk-adverse with every single aspect. We've seen designers that have left say they much rather enjoyed their work on AoS because head office/marketing doesn't care so much about what happens there because it's not the cash-cow the company is riding on so they actually get to engage in a bit of artistry, where as it's crushed out of the 40k stuff by endless micromanagement.
>>97007843I have the same question about the official Chaos Squat Exo Armour... why do they have chainswords? But, yeah... these look a bit more.... Terminator Proxy... than Exo Armour.
>>97019082i quit the hobby sometime around or before 2014 and i think a big part of it was everything starting to feel lame or off. i ended up getting interested in historical miniatures and so havent touch warhammer in like a decade. everytime i get curious its lamer or more retarded than before which is why i asked.i moved a few times and got rid of all my stuff i painted over the course of a decade which i regret now but its done. so now as i said i may try and rebuild a 4th ed army but idk how to go about it, probably used on ebay.the entire band just feels weird now, down to the box art or the fonts they used or the warhammer logo itself, every aspect of it seems soulless now. its crazy that the designs now are so bad because surely they have the cash to hire skilled people so its like disney and nu starwars where i dont understand how with the resources the company has, how every new design (almost all of them) look like deviant art fan shit.
>>97007843Sculpted to look cool, and WYSIWYGers just have to deal with it
>>97019174One of the GW specialist games rules designers came out and said he was on £19k a year around 2020James Makes Games@James_M_HewittJul 26, 2021I was on £19,000pa when I was a rules writer. That went up to £20,000pa when I joined the specialist brands team as a game designer. I was on more money when I was running the GW store in Kensington, four years prior.Less than supermarket workers. And these people are meant to have the brains to make good games?
>>97019186the people they had up until around 2010 were doing a great job arguably, so i dont get what shifted or changed. even if they only had artists working on commission for concepts i just dont get why the overall aesthetic got so much worse.i was shocked to hear fantasy got cancelled and i was confused and excited to hear they were bringing it back in the form of AOS and OW, but arguably those lines suffer from the same issue where too many designs look worse than things made before in the 2000s. (not all of course but many)bretonnia for example, most of the new units looks worse than the simple knights made in 2000. they dont have the same charm character or uniqueness but compensate in pointless greeble and the aesthetic doesnt even match in many cases.
>>97018869I guess so, and the design pipeline probably changed along with modern influences creeping in, and probably more oversight. It feels like they got a bunch of artists from Blizzard and other video games. 40k looks closer to a video game from the xbox360 era than the oldhammwr aesthetic but I can't exactly explain what it is about the old designs that make them unique.
https://creativesculptstudio.com/Cool little company I discovered, mostly Oldhammer type stuffs
>>97019263i can share my opinion and its that at some point around 2008-2014 it seemed like most science fiction IPs started trying to ake everything is detailed and greebled as possible. i think this is retarded and autistic because a good design (like what was more common in the early 2000s) usually had a good balance of positive and negative space. even older franchises understood this. my benchmark i use is something like the original storm trooper armor, boba fett, darthvader, with a good balnce of interesting shapes to smooth areas. or halo, masterchief from halo 123/ versus 4 or 5. today the issue seems to be things being either hyper detailed and cluttered, or overly smooth and minimalistic. the balance isnt there. older designs from the 90s sometimes were overdetailed but usually in an exciting way which was fun or interesting versus more lines or pointless extra shapes to take up empty space.
>>97019082>We've seen designers that have left say they much rather enjoyed their work on AoS because head office/marketing doesn't care so much about what happens there because it's not the cash-cow the company is riding on so they actually get to engage in a bit of artistry, where as it's crushed out of the 40k stuff by endless micromanagement. That would explain why fucking AoS minis of all things tend to have more soul than actual 40k.
>>97019305And that probably ties in with focus testing.Gribble details and contrast seem to appeal to people who glance at things for a moment and don't take in the designs or think about the practicality of space armor etc. I bet focus testing is how we got this devotion inside GW to push primaris.I see this alot in the Gundam model kit space. All of the showpiece models that get shown off are covered in garnish amounts of pointless detail and comical amounts of hazard warning. It looks impressive at a glance but soon becomes distracting. People even take the classic kits and cover then I'm panel lines just to gribble them up.I think modern GW designs are bad in other ways though. Even when they don't slather their models in detail, their design choices are just always downgrades. It's easiest to see in 30k redesigns which are almost always disappointments that show their current designers don't understand what made the old aesthetica great. I think when they do have artistic freedom, I bet there's a degree of narcissism of young designers wanting to outdo the old ones by pushing more of their personality onto old sculpts that didn't need it, but I dunno
