How about we make Elves but they are caveman almost ape like uga buga living in caves and using sticks to fight?
While we are at that we may as well make Slivers with 4 limbs and humanoid face and Kavus that are scientists and artifices!
How about we also make Cephalids that looks like humans except they are blue?
We can also Dragons without wings walking on foot and without a "breath weapon"!

say something nice about Mr. Mark Rosewater, the man that will control your game for the next decade, UB IPs included.
>>
>>96821874
Unironically this, except it'll be once a month.
They'll try to market it as serialized expansions of the card pool while the cards and mechanics will all be bland and trivial, yet still pushed enough that you'll have to purchase from it to stay competitive in various formats. All objections will be overridden with data demonstrating that the line went up and that this clearly shows what the players really want.

Omenpaths are fine. It's literally just "There's planar portals around. Some are stable, some are random". You can do a ton of stuff with that. Shithole planes spilling out refugees/monsters onto less fucked planes, interplanar wars, races encountering their counterparts from other planes. The problem is just that WotC chose to do fucking nothing with it except having some non-planeswalker named characters show up somewhere else. Where the fuck is my interplanar vampire cartel? Where is my set about Thalia leading her people across the planes to the promised land? Where is my Kamigawa-Kaladesh planar war?
>Sorry, best we can do is gay cowboys and a spooky mansion

Mapping out doesn't actually mean they have sets planned for that far ahead, it's more they have concepts for what might be there. UB sets take about 4-ish years to actually be made overall so nothing's set in stone after about 2028.

Well the intent seems to be to have only occasional cameo appearances outside of big 'crossover-y' sets. Like for example Lorwyn's only Omenpath visitors will be the Strixhaven students (and there'll be a Planeswalker I'm sure). Reality Fracture will presumably be the next one of that ilk, though unlike OTJ and DFT there's at least more of a clear 'reason' for why that'd be a thing.

in descending order they should be white then black then red. black first if you want to emphasis the invasion aspect.
zuko's cards have him literally malding about his jealousy and ambitions which is the most black thing ever but nope they're red because fire and also he wears red
Zuko's in Mardu colors for his Rare but let's be honest they only did that so he could have more color identity for coommander
the only Fire Nayshun character we see on a white card is uncle Iroh in this card because he's standing in front of the WHITE lotus (get it?? it's a white card because the lotus is WHITE)

I'd argue they're Black first, then Red, then White. They want conquest for control's sake, but also a lot of it is just for power's sake on the part of the Fire Lord. Ozai doesn't really care about controlling the world, he just wants to have the power that comes from that, hence him being Black.

>>
>>96823956
They've got a strong notion of discipline, which you could place as White, but I wouldn't put it as their defining trait. For all of Zuko's talk about honor, the society as a whole doesn't put much emphasis on it. I don't think we see a single honest Agni Kai duel in the whole show. Zuko seems to be the only person who takes the concept seriously. The leadership is almost gleeful to use underhanded tactics and use sacrificial pawns. Aggression and ambition tends to be rewarded over teamwork or morality.
The Fire Nation is Black first, then Red, and then a little White.

Retarded newfag with a question.

Do counters negate each other? Specifically talking about persist, I'm thinking of adding a card with it to my deck. Theory crafting so far but...

if I have to add a -1/-1 counter, can I add a +1/+1 to remove it or will it have both and thus die for good next time it dies?
>>
>>96827842
Specifically those two counters do negate each other, yes.
>>
>>96827842
Yes, those two have a specific interaction where they'll actually remove each other, not just cancel out. So if you add one of each you'll end up with a creature that has no counters. It's a pretty common way to abuse persist creatures.
>>
>>96827842
They do if it's an equal amount of each. It'll be like the creature has no counters at all.

No, seriously, who the fuck are these people who were apparently buying tons of EOE and SPM? Where do they buy Magic? Where do they play Magic? How do they play Magic?
The only rational explanation I can come up with is some massive invisible majority of normalfags that exclusively buys from Amazon or big-box stores and then just sits on their cards at home except for the occasion that they can coerce a relative or friend into playing some kitchen table with them. That, or there's some critical underestimation of just how many pure collectors and speculators are out there.

I'll believe it when I see it. I'll be curious to see the numbers 5 or 10 years from now. >>

These people don't care about player retention. They care about the churn. If a set causes 25% playerbase to disappear but they gain 26% from scalpers and collectors it shows up as growth on the sheet.
>>
Vorthos players in shambles
>>
>>96827971
The current data they've said is that on average, people who get into the game and actually play it because of UB tend to stick around more than people who play it on a whim. Which I'd believe, honestly, because the attachment of UB means they develop a bit more an interest in trying the game out more thoroughly than just "cards seem fun". It's definitely not pushing away that many players either, despite what you idiots here are saying. SPM flopped mostly on the basis of being just a bad set (and we still don't REALLY know how badly it did, if it just did poorly at LGSes for example, it definitely did better than DFT). The biggest buyers of UB (after already-enfranchised players which, of course) are apparently lapsed players, and then new players.
Whether or not you believe this data is another thing, but market research data can be misinformed or biased but it's usually not completely 100% wrong.

I guess I'll bite and say I was definitely one. I got into magic gathering almost exclusively for the pretty card art and flavor text and flavorful mechanics. I played kitchen table mtg with friends during lunch when I was in middle and high school, then when I went to college I dabbled in standard and some EDH (where I played Angel Tribal because I thought they were the prettiest)
95% of my enjoyment of magic the gathering is pretty art and cool flavor text, and those old narrative short stories they'd upload on their website. Eldritch Moon was probably the last time I really liked a set for its flavor, although one Ajani short story from Kaladesh was really nice but I think I just have a soft spot for the catman because I started in Lorwyn/Shadowmoor.

I'm one of the people who actually liked shit like the unofficial PlaneShift material they made for D&D and used shit like the Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica. Especially the last ~5 or so years I've played way more TTRPGs than I have MTG, but even when I barely kept up with MTG sets I'd still look at card art and use it for character art and such. I never seriously cared about competitive magic, the only real competitive format I really liked was Sealed/Draft since opening packs and playing with random stuff you get to keep is fun.
https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/magic-story/saint-traft-and-flight-nightmares-2016-07-13

Universes Beyond means we don't get in depth explorations of a plane's culture and inhabitants and quirks anymore, we don't even get actual blocks with multiple sets within a plane, it's one-and-done tourism in between more fortnite crossovers. I don't even play in-universe magic the gathering cards if I think the art is ugly or the flavor text sucks, why the fuck would I care about ninja turtles or avatar the last airbender?

Saw references were fine; I can totally buy that some razorkin got a hardon for psychologically tormenting their victims before killing them. Ghostbusters was ridiculous, and the retrotech is covered in "survivor design".

one thing i dislike about it is that the magic system in MtG is so different from D&D that its feels weird to stat things in that system. i say this as someone who like D&D as well.

White/Blue/Red/Jeskai. He's calm and collected but not emotionally detached like Azorius, and his past as the Dragon of the West is firmly Red. His grief and intense guilt over the death of his son is also Red; the reason he goes so far for Zuko is to try and do for him what he couldn't his own child, and later in the series when he gets serious he shows that he's still got that "dragon" inside him when he gets fucking shredded in prison and breaks out.

Ahoy
Goblins is a popular nostalgic deck that is actually good, and it isn't ridiculously expensive to build. One component of it doing well is just being played a lot. There are like 10 fucking players that have Goblins in my ~40 person tournaments.
Another is mental load. Goblins plan is straight forward, easy to sideboard for, and not mentally taxing to play. In a 8+ round tournament, that can be a huge blessing, especially for less experienced players. Games usually don't go to time on Goblins either, so you have more mental unload time and can even get food or go outside between rounds.
Lastly, Goblins is well positioned in the meta right now. Oath (while being hard for Goblins) is also running defense for Goblins by pushing out most midrange strategies. Parallax Tide also pushes out a lot of midrange. For individual match ups, Goblins is also great at beating up on a lot of cheap "meta" decks that format tourists or beginners will flock to, like UW Control, BW Control, Madness, The Rock, most the Survival decks

TMNT will probably not sell well.
Marvel Slop will probably not sell well.

honestly I'm kind of curious whether this will be the case. a 20 year old children's cartoon with a poorly handled sequel that kind of shat all over it is not remotely comparable to fucking FINAL FANTASY or THE LORD OF THE RINGS, two of the most highly influential pieces of fantasy to ever exist, that both predate Magic the Gathering to begin with.
Are there enough aging millenials with disposable income to buy huge amounts of Avatar the Last Airbender cards? the MCU and Spiderverse movies are also really popular with dumb millenials and this set was a total flop, is a 20 year old children's cartoon really gonna fare better?

Avatar is popular, but it's not more popular than fucking Spider-Man and even that couldn't carry a set. If this shit was coming out in 2012 yeah I bet it'd do really well, but the people who watched ATLA as a ten year old and Korra as a teenager are now in their 30's

he's right about hybrid mana in edh, it's been retarded you couldn't use Boros Reckoner in an Akroma deck from day 1. Sheldon's a retard and the EDH rules committee were insufferable faggots.
That said, EDH should go back to only being able to generate types of mana in your commander's converted mana cost, and color identity should only count mana symbols in CMC. No more WUBRG commanders that are fucking monocolored permanents like kenrith. The only WUBRG commanders need to cost 5+ mana like progenitus.

Basically, the lore of NEO was absolute fucking shit. It was a bunch of fabricated nonsense for sole purpose of propping up a boring MacGuffin plot.

I do not know why anyone thinks it was a good set.

It played well.
I personally hate what they did to Kamigawa as a setting and the lore of it but Wizards fucking hates the plane.

it's really funny that thanks to edh resulting in hundreds of legendaries every few years that a Betrayers of Kamigawa card from 20 years ago is now considered an absolute staple when it was famously dunked on as a weak set inferior to mirrodin at the time
>>

>>
>>96829604
Well yeah Mirrodin was retarded. But that wasn't the point, the point was that it has way more cards in it that were played heavily across formats than people think.
>>
>>96829618
ok, but soulshift was absolute shit, the commons were extremely overcosted, the hand size matter card managed to give us shit like Kitsune Bonesetter, and the flavor was too confusing for average player then, just imagine what would happen if current slopgoys would get a set like that

And any intelligent player would be able to remember how any card that's referencing itself by name works after being corrected once, but this game isn't simply designed for newbies, which would be bad enough, it's designed for "everyone," and "everyone" includes chronic retards who can't imagine how they'd feel if they didn't have breakfast this morning, but it doesn't include you. If you don't like where the game is right now, WotC doesn't think you're a person.

>>

What I don't get about DSK is the need to shove in all the 20th century technology and references. Like, why can't we have typical MTG wizards, soldiers, etc trapped in the house? There's even great space to address how, say, someone from Theros handles it vs someone from Ravnica handles it.
>>
>>96829964
The only thing I disliked about Duskmourn was the artwork of the survivors. They all looked like people who just got a nice shower and a clean set of clothes. It broke the immersion of an otherwise great concept.

Smash Brothers has more creative integrity than MtG.

>>
>if you want a format without UBs, you need to start your own format, like muh cummanderh
They surely didn't need this grassroot movement for formats like Planechase, Alchemy, Historic, Pioneer, Archenemy, Brawl, etc. I can't believe the lies Maro says qith a straight face.
>>
>>96830223
I don't blame him. Maro is like 10 years away from retirement, now he's just going through the motions. If money were no object he would agree with most anons. We know that because he authored many of the core design principles we know and love about the game. Everything current Mark shills for can be countered by something Mark wrote in his blogatog or design columns years ago.
>>
>>96830326
Current Mark is really just a puppet with Chris Cock's hand up his ass making him say all that shit.
>>
>>96830020
Because it's the 90s horror plane, and they're committing to the bit, which is based. When you DON'T commit to bit and just have people from other planes vacation there, you end up with Thunder Junction.
>>
"Bestie" is not a 90's term.
>>
>>96830544
From the Oxford English Dictionary:
>"The earliest known use of the noun bestie is in the 1990s. OED's earliest evidence for bestie is from 1991, in the Observer (London)."

Also there was a samurai woman and a ninja guy running around.
>>
>>96830582
I think there's a difference between "there's 2-3 guys from other planes here" like usual, and "the plane is literally devoid of natives." One is the baseline of MtG because these people are the connective tissue of the story, and the other is Thunder Junction, the plane composed of Magic characters on holiday with no interesting things of its own.
>>
>>96821825
nothing is unexpected, killing the golden goose for meat would increase quarterly revenue but kill long term sustainability

Sloppers won.
>>
>>96830608
I see your point. I can't name a single character from Cowboyland.
>>
>>96830536
And Mirrodin is the artifact plane, but it managed to do interesting things with a bunch of species from other planes living there. DSK by definition gobbles up other planes so even if the survivors weren't from planes we know, having classic wizards, soldiers etc would have been a lot more interesting than cheerleaders and baseball bats

The copers have the same mentality as doomsday cultists or day traders. Just two more weeks, bro. It's all going according to plan, just wait and see and everything will happen as I predicted, because I'm the smart one who noticed things other people were too foolish to see. Once it doesn't happen, I'll point to some new factor that changed the equation, it'll actually be another two weeks from then.
>>
>>96830775
>>96830786

>>
>>96830795
It should be white humans with the text "this creature counts as black"
>>
>>96830764

>>
>>96830812

>>
>>96830822

>>
>>96830754
Mirrodin's species are basically completely native and original. They never at any point import the culture or the societies from other planes, and the number of people who even REMEMBER being from another plane can be counted on one hand (which is why Scars of Mirrodin was utterly nonsensical).
