I've kitbashed a praetorian from some decent scans of the older Cadian models. I've put it next to a Fummelfinger Space Marine to show off the scale. I really like it. I plan to print these Praetorians to use in my 1:1 time, patron and RPG Braunstein campaign based on second edition with alternating actions.

Asking here as I feel I'll get a better answer.
What material do you use for the physical base of terrain?
IE: Woods, ruins, etc.
Wood? Plasticard? I'm trying to think of something light but sturdy
>>
>>96844015
cork my guy
>>
>>96844021
I won't need to worry about it crumbling/breaking apart as its handled?
Cork doesn't feel like it'll be all that sturdy for a terrain base.
>>
>>96844015
If you got the tools to cut it - Thin OSB for larger pieces. Plywood is getting pricey.
Smaller pieces you can even get away with cork, which can be stabilized by drizzling it with CA glue.
My fav is doing 3D printed bases. Sturdy, easy to design, no warping can be tailored to whatever you need and you can even model in some elevation to save on actual material and weight. But you gotta have access to a 3D printer (FDM).
>>
>>96844047
See: >>96844069
Superglue makes it nice and stiff. Also cork as-is does not crumble that easily without anyone trying to actively crumble it.
>>
>>96844077
>Superglue makes it nice and stiff.
Ur mom also makes it nice and stiff
>>
>>96844069
I do seem to remember seeing OSB mentioned in previous looks so I may re-check that but I'll keep cork under consideration.
I've been considering just looking for plastic bases but if the super glue is enough to make Cork stiffen up then I'll give that a look.

I tend to send quite a lot... maybe 360-ish... but I'm retarded, and have odd tastes, so I figure the recieving partys are probably a bit confused, much of the time.

Over the 4 years I've taken part, I've received nothing once, £25 to £30 once, £50 to £60 once and last year probably about £150 worth.

Go into it expecting to get screwed over and you'll be ecstatic with whatever you receive. Though, myself, I oft use it to clear out stuff I've been hording and will never use.

She was very mediocre, far below I could and should do. At least now I'm smart enough to do sub-assembly painting next time since half of problems was related to how I couldn't reach certain areas without holding brush in odd way, often painting over whole different colors due to lack of proper hand brace. And she had white robe with gold trim, which isn't easy to begin with.

the really thick silver edge highlights are a hard no dude. You have a really good model here and the rest of your paint work is spot on. The fat highlights on the silver bring it down. Try and stipple or drybrush instead or you can clean them up by painting a medium silver to thin the fat lines. Nothing against you but the silver pops out in a bad way. Just first thought that came into my head.

Not entirely sure what caused this bit of texture on the wings. I was using a old shit brush, so maybe the bristles were sort of disintegrating and leaving texture? Griffon Claw from TTC and it's not a chunky paint at all. The primer is pretty smooth too to the point it was being a little hydrophobic at the start
>>
>>96854798
was the primer fully cured before painting?
>>
>>96854798
>to the point it was being a little hydrophobic at the start
Well that's your problem, primer shouldn't be smooth it should have some texture for paint to grab onto. You had a priming issue and that caused weird paint behavior.

>>96854798
Might be dust. Anything you are looking to prime that has been sitting idle for a while it is a good idea to give a quick brush off before priming. Alternatively it could have been from dust or flecks left in the brush itself. Or if it is a polyurethane based primer make sure it never froze as that will fuck it up permanently, but I would also expect other issues if that was the case.
>>
>>96854832
>primer shouldn't be smooth
these are the kind of people giving advice on wip
>>
>>96854914
My WIP box is an old candy tin, so no dust getting in there. I think it was the brush. Old dogshit brush that I usually use for washes, but it sits out and probably collects dust and rinsing it in my cup might not get it all out. I just won't use those old shitty brushes for that kind of thing I guess.
>>
>>96854948
There's this weird tendency itt (or one specific retard-kun) to give advice on shit you have no clue about. It's kinda baffling.
>>
>>96854948
There's smooth and there's smooth. A primer should of course give you an even coat without any lumps or so, but if it goes outright "glassy" on you it will, as he noted, tend to cause adhesion and flow issues for the paint you put on top.
>>
>>96854948
>>96854991
I mean he's technically not wrong because you don't want it perfectly smooth on like a microscopic scale. It should definitely be smooth to the touch though.

Anywhere selling airbrush stuff should also be selling the Vallejo airbrush cleaner. You don't need anywhere near as much of the stuff as people seem to think as long as you are flushing your airbrush after use. Don't run ethanol or acetone based cleaners through it though as you will fuck the O-rings. If it needs a deep clean then you can use that stuff but make sure to remove the O-rings prior then let it soak.

Too bad you didn't make the slaanesh banner more of a machine with some daemonette attached to like some torture/bdsm thing. Otherwise you could make it seem like it's a living thing that's been turned into a banner, like the sonic thig at the top is it's mouth, the side hooks are it's hands and the backside of the banner hides the rest of the mutated thing.

The nurgle banner should be a skull or set of three skulls. Or maybe a fly. Either way, make the banner look like it's oozing some putrid chemical and that the banner is rotting.

Khorne banner should be either khornes logo or the face of a bloodthirster or something. It looks pretty clean, so maybe make it look plain but soaked in blood?

>>96855154
Very situational, mostly to achieve very smooth finishes, usually with an airbrush, which doen't have the same issues as a brush.
>>
>>96855837
>What is some good acrylic airbrush cleaner that’s not expensive but still good?
If you're cleaning out acrylics from your brush while the paint is still wet, you probably won't need more than some warm water. If you've only used water-based or solvent-based acrylics and you've deferred cleaning a little (maybe the phone rang or you had to make dinner or something) then chasing the hot water with IPA will probably do the trick. If you let ANYTHING dry in your airbrush, the easiest option - by far - is to just go nuclear and use lacquer thinner or acetone. Those solvents will muderdeathkill everything (especially dried paint) from every relevantnook and cranny and do it extremely fast. The downside is that unless you want to stink up your workstation you need to have either a pot or a functional extraction system.

I made this ‘tutorial’/recipe for speed painting orcs like 4 years ago. I guess it needs just a bit of text to go along with the pictures.

I personally love these kinds of tutorials. I find them more useful than videos. Though videos have the advantage of showing how the paint is applied. I’m thinking that could be done with a gif.

Any thoughts, c/c etc?

This was just when contrast came out and I was pretty hype about it for army painting.
>>
>>96857955
100% acetone is fine as a cleaner, not so much as glue, it dissolves the plastic alright but it doesn't bond quite the same
you calso can't do useful sprue goo, it's a lot more 'gummy', stringy and overall finicky, think slime vs clay
>>
>>96857964
I think what you have here would work, provided there's a column out to the right with clear concise language explaining what you're doing in each step. A tutorial image like that would end up in our MEGA for sure!

The problem with using a GIF is that there're no "start" and "stop" buttons, so you have to watch the whole thing several times to get the precise instructions.

So I stripped the paint off and tried it again, same result. Although grain doesn't seem to be as bad. So it's probably the primer and I confirmed it was part of the last batch I did with AP. It's so weird that AP seems to go on kinda rough but is also way glossier than Colour Forge.
So I might strip the primer off and try to reprime before the weather gets too shit for the season. Should probably reprime Duval too since he was part of the same batch.

>>
>>96863093
why did you think painting them like the whitest man in argentina was a good in between step?
>>
New painter here with a question. How do I know what colors to use to compliment the model?

For example I want to paint a Chaos Space Marine Blue-Green (more Green than Blue), what color should I paint the trim? Dark Brass? White-ish brass? Yellow Gold? Bright Yellow Gold? Would muted colors be better or brighter colors? How do I know how to pick? I don't know.

You could try dicking around in image editing software and do a hue shift on selective parts. Washes might be a bit more tricky since they add something of a tint.

Citadel did paint a Chaos Lord as AL in the promo pics, since they're fairly green-blue it might help.
>>
>>96863443
Yeah I see the red green apple. I was just wondering if there is a way to know what color to use. I think that muted gold would look better but what do I know. I barely can tell colors apart.

I'll try to remember to write up a simple guide next time I'm painting gold. The gist of it is
>retributor armor/TTC dragon's gold basecoat
>wash with a 1:1 mix of gore-grunta fur and magos purple(or reikland and druchii violet, contrasts give a nicer color though), do 2 passes for deeper shadows
>layer up towards the parts that would reflect light with liberator gold/ttc glistening gold and canoptek alloy/ttc platinum crown
>edge highlight upwards facing edges with canoptek alloy/ttc platinum crown

I think some of them either don't think about the trim until later or just want to break away from typical metal colors. And to be fair, unlike loyalists it's a recurring design trait across the entire army, so perhaps it stifles trying to make something original.

Could also propose to anon that he may find fair use from DoW2's army painter to some extent.

I tried making armour from masking tape for my Dacian falxmen, inspired by the dendra panoply and those segmented WW1 body armours. Currently the vambrace is way too thick and I need to rethink how to do it, but I think the basic idea is sound.
