I've been playing mono-red stax in cedh. Fast mana, stax pieces, interaction. The commander I use is unimportant to my question. If I get a turn, my lines are really not that bad and if I mulligan well and play better than I can make an account for myself. However, my getting a turn is only guaranteed if i am either going first or if the players before me aren't trying to combo out on 1. The biggest thing I struggle with in my deck is being relevant before I can get my prison pieces out. This is concentrated in the opening turn. There are a few decks that can go off before I can play any cards at all and I've found that I'm super soft against it.For example, a friend plays Etali. He's a good player, has constructed and refined his deck over at least a year or two, and knows his lines. It is not impossible for him to go off on turn 1. He spams out some fast mana, races out Etali, and Food Chains for the win. If he's on the play then it is incredibly difficult for me to interact with his win condition and I am mostly reliant on other players to stop him. This isn't a great strategy to rely on others that have probably also kept a greedy hand with few ways to protect their win.The only way I can think to consistently interact with him is to keep very specific openers. For example, my best option for going anything but first is to have Gemstone Caverns, with a card to pitch to it, and Simian Spirit Guide in my opener. I could have Pyretic Ritual, but this is really reaching. I have access to 2 mana. My friend goes off and does his thing. The only times I can interact with his combo is when he casts Etali or Food Chain. On their casting, I can respond with Tibalt's Trickery. With a mana-producing trigger or spell on the stack I can flash in Disrupter Flute and name either Etali or Food Chain. This makes their cast costs too high to combo off with. My last way I can blow him out is to cast Wild Magic targeting Food Chain once I have priority.

He often just exiles everyone's libraries and there are cards that force a player to draw a card, which would deck him out. But, then I'm giving the game away to whoever is last seed.This is not to mention other decks that can just go off on turn 1 like Vivi or some Thoracle lines. But at least I have Pyroblast effects to close the gap on those. I could just accept that I'm doomed against turn 1 wins on the play. Maybe it's just the limitations of my color that I can't surmount. Even if I successfully blow out someone going for the win it requires blowing a lot of resources to do so and kingmakes the other two players. I really want this to work but I'm soft against certain strategies that make this seem impossible.tldr: what are the best ways to stop people from comboing off on turn 1 in mono red when you're not on the play?

I played 2 games and gotta chill.
