God I fucking miss when you could afford to play utility lands without getting run over before they can even do anything.

>>96904089>4-of: Card you want to see all the time>3-of: Card you want to see once per game>2-of: Cards you sometimes want to see, cards you want to see if the game goes late>1-of: Cards you never want to draw more than one of, cards you can tutorFor example, you want 4 Brainstorm because you can readily cast it and are almost always happy to see it (fugg bowmasters), but something like Stroke of Genius is clunky in multiples and becomes stronger as the game goes later, making it great at 2-ofAnother tool that helps you think of number of cards is mana cost. A 4-cost spell is going to rot in your hand on turns 1, 2, and 3, so it becomes easier to run as a 3-of because you have 4 turns to naturally draw into it. Lower cost spells are also easier to double spell, so running more of them increases your chances of casting two spells in a turn, whereas 4+ mana cost spells are almost never going to be double spelled in a turnThere have been a lot of writings about land count and color requirements. You can search "Frank Karsten MTG Land" and you will find multiple articles. The big takeaways>14 colored mana sources to turn 1 cast>18 colored mana sources to turn 2 cast>most people run too few lands to support their top end>abilities on lands allow your lands to "double" as spells, creatures, or mana sinksYou want to be able to play turn 1 Path to Exile then turn 2 Counterspell. You need 14 white sources for Path and 18 for Counterspell. An example mana base of 4 Tundra 4 Flooded Strand 6 Plains 10 Islands would hit your color requirements, since Tundra and Flooded Strand count towards both white and blue. If we improve this mana base by adding another land that produces W and U, we can then turn other lands into utility lands like Mutavault

For me, Modern died with the RW Burn.
>>96903757I'm actually quite tempted to jump into the format with Black Aggro but not Clerics.
>>96904089>>96904226[cont]One of the reasons people talk about archetypes is because it gives a roadmap for playing but also deck construction. While there are subgenres and combination archetypes, these are very well known>combo: 20 lands, 8 interaction>aggro: 22 lands, 10 interaction>midrange: 24 lands, 12 interaction>control: 26 lands, 14+ interactionAn aggro deck which wants to come out swinging is going to prioritize threats over land advantage and interaction. Hitting their 1-2-3 drops that apply pressure is more important than making sure they get to their 4th land. Meanwhile control decks want to hit every land drop and use that mana advantage to create their win in a longer game, which is also why they want higher amounts of interaction. These numbers are just a guideline, but also format dependent. Deck building ideas also come into play here. For example, decks running Gush are able to play far fewer lands for two reasons, namely Gush draws cards (find those fewer lands with additional draws), and Gush returns lands to hand (play lands returned via Gush). Decks that are able to run functionally identical cards with different names gain a huge advantage in consistency. A great example of this is the 8-rack deck, which ran two different versions of a one cost card that deals damage when your opponent has little/no cards in hand. Having 8 copies means it is very likely to start with one of these or draw them naturally, and the deck also relied on the numerous discard options to turn on the 8-rack damage. Sometimes a card has a similar but worse card that goes with it, such as the deck Splinter Twin. Splinter Twin is a 4 cost enchantment with RR, but the deck can run a 5 mana creature (Kiki jiki) that costs RRR as a back up. Decks have the option to run 1-4 copies of Kiki jiki if they want further redundancy, but it isn't as appealing as the 8-rack situation for obvious reasons.
>>96904320Look up "Moneyball Black", a build of it it just won the largest ever Premodern event. The idea is you play good, solid cards that don't fold to any match up and are well positioned against many top decks. The deck is rather cheap to build, worth your time to gitgud on, and you can adjust for any given meta. Black has really great and easy to use sideboard options too, so your brain won't be nuked when playing a tournament
>>96903048>tqdual lands

You WILL get rigged games forever, your opponent will be given better draws because if you lose they know you will probably grind to win again. Multiplayer gaming is nothing but a skinner box and you only have yourself to blame for going back into it.

Though MTGO sucks generally anyway, so as long as you learn to yield through no possible plays and tap out and EOT, the game can speed up immensely. In case anyone gives a shit, there were strangely TWO premodern games up (and a penny dreadful league) which is more than the one standard game. About 16 pauper games. 5 vintage. 7 legacy. 15 modern. 2 pioneer. 12 4 player commander, one 2 player commander, 5 duel commander.
If we had block formats maybe we could have allied and enemy shocklands for EOE and Lorwyn 2. It's actually so shitty that there are now enemy space shocklands but no allied ones and allied Lorwyn shocks but no enemy ones. Not to mention the Lorwyn shocks are easily the fugliest shocklands yet.

Seriously though Magic is a 30-year-old IP, one of the most well known in the world and literally genre defining, but it has so little porn, so little fanart in general, and no iconic sexy female character. Liliana is the designated one but she's forced as fuck. The biggest sex symbol in Magic is Ajani.I think it does show immaturity and brand weakness that Magic is this sexless.
>>96903346>how do you save it?Amulet Titan is the best deck in Modern right now, Green has never needed saving. Frankly I'm still nursing a grudge over collected company and siege rhino. Right now Red Deck Wins and Vivi are shitting up Standard but that doesn't undo decades of the past. Also all eldrazi decks are green as a matter of course even in Legacy because WOTC utterly failed to distinguish "colorless needs a bunch of mana to cast big eldrazi creatures!" from "green makes a fuckton of mana to cast big green stompy creatures" as color pie slices so "colorless" is really just green 2.0 with decks running once upon a time, multiple yavimayas, and eldrazi repurposer with a bunch of cavern of souls

>>96908850>collector boosters on Doordash
>>96908725>>96908772>>96908832It also has other uses- Jumpstart cards are only legal in legacy/vintage/commander, so it gives them another avenue to print or reprint interesting cards for those formats.
>>96908772It is strange that we didn't get Commander precons for Spider-Man or Avatar. We are getting one for TMNT, but it is odd that we're only getting one (you'd think there'd be second deck for villains). One would think that Marvel would get at least 4 precons like FF did, but who knows what will happen.
>>96908772I am also confused by the lack of avatar precons.
>>96908899You been in a coma for the past few years? They've been printing commander cards in standard, they don't give a fuck about that kind of shit. They'd just make a seventh standard set in the year if they wanted to have those cards get added.
>>96908916I think MaRo already confirmed we're getting Marvel precons.Spider-Man presumably didn't get precons because it was originally meant to be a small set like Ass Creed and they clearly didn't have enough time. As for Avatar, who knows, my guess is that they decided to dedicated their resources to Jumpstart instead for some reason.
>>96908924I think they want to stop putting precons out every set in general, too? They want only like one supplemental product per set, really.
>>96908857that's what I thought. I guess I don't mind the extra effort but isn't that like, really ambitious?? Wiki says there are 121 (!) different packs with 61 themes, and then the beginner box has another ten packs with themes of their own -- and basically none of these cards are standard legal? So they end up having fourth and fifth versions of characters like Zuko and Aang just so they can support all these packs?I've glanced at some of the Jumpstart cards and it seems like they all use the same mechanics - Lessons and Shrines and Allies and Bending - as the ones in the Standard set which has 280 cards. Would it really not have been possible to make 61 decks using some combination of the cards in the set and some Standard-legal reprints? On the one hand I'm really impressed by the amount of dev work that went into all that, and I really like Jumpstart products in principle, but it's just so weird to me that buying Jumpstart cards doesn't let you... JUMPSTART a standard collection at all.
>>96908923all card are for commander, not all cards are for legacy
>>96908937They mentioned they wanted to cut down on pre cons a bit this year and to their credit they actually meant it for once. Most standard sets only get 2 commander decks with the exception of Tarkir compared to last year where you were getting 4 per a set
>>96908937They did stop doing 4 precons for every set like they used to, now 2 seems to be the norm for universes-within sets (although Dragonstorm got 5 since Tarkir and the clans are all popular), and for UB it seems to just depend.
>>96908725To make you spend more money with exclusive cards. (It arguably is a "good" product for new players even though it isn't because the cards are not Standard legal.)
>>96909030standard is not a better format for new players compared to limited
>>96909030The majority of new players don't care about Standard legality because they'll never play Standard.
>>96909023I do wonder what Super Heroes will have actually. I can see four existing. Avengers, Fantastic Four, Villains and... I dunno, Street Level?
>>96909043>>96909036they need to un-fuck thisI propose "Set Constructed" as a format
>>96909070They could also do precons based on specific characters and their associated cast and legacy characters, like Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man.
ALL THEY HAD TO DO WAS MAKE STANDARD FUNALL THEY HAD TO DO WAS STOP THE ETB CREEP FROM 2017
Standard is not the entry point into Magic anymore, it's EDH.
>>96909077Trying to push yet another format isn't going to solve that. The point is that most new players will tend to just play kitchen table, they're not going to spend a bunch of time looking up decklists or trying to figure out if the cards they have are legal in the format.
>>96909094They could, but that'd feel weirdly narrow for as broad a set as Super Heroes seems to be. Best guess is Avengers helmed by Cap, Fantastic Four helmed by Reed (or Reed & Sue together with Johnny & Ben as the backup), Villains helmed by Doctor Doom and Street Level helmed by... Let's say Daredevil (with Luke Cage as backup maybe)? We're likely getting an X-Men set since the only real X-Men character showing up in Super Heroes, near as we can tell, is Wolverine, who's... Like, in every fucking team, it'd be weirder if he wasn't there, so I'm not considering an X-Men precon or any such thing.

>>96909238>events at local store not being commanderyou play jewrena for standard anon
>>96910558the "endgame" zuko grows infinitely with +1/+1 counters and also gets firebending X to match. also firebending student is only Prowess so the growth disappears at end of turn.
>>96909708>>96909760This is how i mainly play magic nowdays. We vote on a set, then we make 2 color decks of 40 cards each. No more than 3 rares, no more than 9 uncommons. You can have up to 3 copies of any one card. One and only one of your rares may be a mythic rare. All other rules apply. It makes for some quick and dirty decks and allows us to play magic in a 4, 3, or 2 man bracket very quickly. Powerlevel is like sealed or a little better.
>>96909077they'd need to stop making 50 sets a year for this to work and that would make hasbro less money
>>96910395I really enjoyed when this and yorion were in standard, having 15 mana on turn 5 was something.
>>96910601>they'd need to stop making 50 sets a year for this to workwould they, though?
>>96903231Wait. What the fuck is that tech looking thing supposed to be around the back of his head? What fucking set is this?
>>96910693that's duskmourn, the haunted house set. the art is nezumi though who's from kamigawa, the tech shit is some cyberpunk implant or whatever. the whole deal with duskmourn is that it kidnaps shit from other planes like ravenloft in D&D
