Thread question:
What leftover models do you think other factions like Orks and Chaos will get before 11e?
>>
I dont care for marines but its so funny how fucking forced they're making titus be the next mascot. Rip my boy ventrus or whatever the dude who saw perty is called.

It's the smart thing to do and honestly I'm surprised it took GW this long to finally understand that they should be working towards tying in the other games that get people into 40k proper. They should have been doing this decades ago with Dawn of War.
>>
40k needs to be more like 30k.

If they give us an official Blood Raven squad with the DoW launch I'll lose my shit.

It would be the smart thing to do if Titus had any kind of personality. Titus "fans" like Titus because that's what the marine they played as was called in the bad gears of war clone that failed over a decade ago

Yes, they are. They are fun and evocative.
>>

Or you could just go play 30k
>>

I'd be happy with WS returning
>>

I didn't say it was a good clone
>>
>>96967417
I think there's more importance to the recent game being a success, especially since it came out right around the time that 40k was (somewhat inexplicably) becoming more popular and mainstream.

Weapon Profile To Hit is just renamed WS. We already have Fights First /Normal but as a compromise Fights First should be way more common.
>>
>>96967451
Titus became even less of a character in the new one with a worse voice actor who sounds bored the entire time, and the game itself didn't improve in any meaningful way, at best it attracted another small secondary following that still won't engage with the ip in any meaningful way

>>96967513
Old 40k is too much of a high trust system to be a good game. It's written expecting your opponent to not be a bastard, that's great if you only play with friends or people who happen to not be a bastard.

If I have to play with bastards, which is gonna happen more often than with friends if I dont have a cult or closed loop friend circle, I want a system where that bastard cant make my experience more painful than it needs to be. Templates are not bastard safe.

While I agree, I think it's a shame that it appears like the game has to kowtow to a bunch of bastards. The problem is that they're still bastards even in the new system and they still game the system (Just look at the FAQ for the current edition). Now the game suffers and you're still probably stuck playing with bastards which is painful regardless.
>>
>>96967518
This is the only other "big" 40k game. Warhammer games in general are at best mediocre, and usually are genuinely bad. The majority of their players are warhammer pigs that will buy literally anything with the warhammer logo on it

Even vermintide/darktide which are always talked about as being amazing get one tiny overpriced dlc once every other year. Vermintide is the worst since most of theirs are just shit they already made from the first game that they charge you again for in the second
>>
>>96967471
I'm a newfag by grog standards (started in 9E) but all the bad experiences Ive had didn't come from rules conflicts but from manchildren mad when their dice rolls are bad. Though there was one time when a guy was just wrong about Big Guns Never Tire and was convinced that he could fire his tanks main battle canon into my tanks when it was in melee with some arcoflags. He still lost even with it, I just didn't have the energy to argue with him after a point. Avoided playing with him after that and he stopped asking for games in our LGS discord eventually. That was one experience out of dozens of games though.

Darktide isn't trying to maintain 100k players at all times though, and the devs have said they are more than happy for the player base to drop off between big releases. And they are based for that.

Armageddon is Ullanor, and 9k years ago the orks perfected gravity technology and turned the Planet into a super gravitic engine so it could be used as a mobile superfortress. If the orks ever capture the planet they would enter a new golden age for ork technology, potentially becoming unstoppable.

So of course GW will never allow Armageddon to fall.

I guess luckily for GW, Space Marine 2 ended up being as popular as they wished.
Ah well, maybe the U5 will get what they deserve if Games Workshop finally bites the bullet and ports them to AoS as an Underworlds set or something.

Spent the last day or so stripping paint from that Eldar lot I got. Did all the infantry/characters last night and the Tanks/Wraithlord today. Also tried to salvage as many of the Dire Avengers as I could (Most of them are missing parts) but could only complete one Exarch minus the flags and 4 standard dues since the rest are missing the buttcapes.

The real gem comes from the metal models, including a squad of Rangers (One missing a gun barrel), an Autarch, some old Gunner dudes (Three in the same pose), and a Rogue Trader Warlock. I went and printed up some 28mm slotta bases for them, probably gonna use one of the triplet gunners on the base of the Revenant Titan along with the lone Guardian Defender that was included in the lot for decoration.

That being said, Necrons are a lot easier for a new hobbyist to paint and while you likely won't get AS good a discount as Nids right now, you'll still be able to get find some good deals on them if you go looking.

It's really not.

Cadia was the only thing preventing the eye of terror from becoming the great rift.

Armageddon is the only thing standing between Orks and invading Terra.

Mars contains the Void Dragon.

Terra itself has the Golden Throne.

Vigilus is the only way to get from one side of the Imperium to the other now that the great rift is a thing.

But Macragge? There's nothing particularly important about it. Guilliman likes it for sentimentality reasons, but if Macragge fell, the Imperium would scarcely notice.

>>
>>96968569
I don't hate the Ultramarines desu, but like...their actual planets? Not important. If Macragge fell, the Ultramarines could recruit from a new planet. There's nothing critically important about Ultramar itself.

If Armageddon falls, it's an "OH SHIT PROTECT TERRA" moment. If Mars or Terra falls, everyone is fucked. If Vigilus falls, half the Imperium is fucked. When Cadia fell, shit got fucked beyond belief.

But Ultramar? If Ultramar fell, the Imperium would be slightly worse off having lost .05% of its planets. But only slightly.

nta but they will definitely notice a forge world under threat, they and the Mechanicus will fight tooth and nail to keep one and it gains the attention of the High Lords directly. Despite what the memes say the Imperium doesn't casually exterminatus planets. I think you're looking at planets like they can only have one trait and not the administrative impact losing a capital causes, that'd be like a country's capital along with all of its government staff getting annihilated at a stroke.

Let's consider a more mundane example like an agri-world. Whatever, who cares. It gets vore'd by Tyranids. That planet might just be one of many but it's still a significant percentage of the food production for a sector. This causes a shortage in a system that barely breaks even when times are good, and times are never good. The lower supply causes a hike in price and forces densely populated planets to ration their supply. The economic shock and rationing breeds unrest, and impacts production efficiency as more resources must be allocated to over-working the remaining agri-worlds. A barely stable sector is now very unstable, an ideal environment for cults and separatists to gain power. Neighboring sectors do what they can but they have little to spare lest they risk their own. More security is forced inward, allowing raiders and invaders more chances to slip in. The magnitude of resources the Imperium must spend just to maintain order and solve the food supply shortage is immense, has to come from somewhere, and all of it takes time. Maybe worlds rebel, maybe the Tithe fails to yield adequate numbers due to malnutrition and leaves the sector even more vulnerable. That's how you get shit like the Sabbat Worlds. For want of a horseshoe.

The Imperium treats its worlds like thousands of pawns on a chessboard because it has to, but that doesn't mean it does so flippantly. For the record I'm a Chaos enjoyer, Death to the False Emperor, etc.
>>
>>96968643
I don't know about that, I mean, if the Tau took a forge world they can't be that important to the Imperium.

Festus was a thing hinted in Aos for a while, with explicit hinting since rotmire creed was released. Same could be true for valkia. Chaos was a fundamental core of the setting so they tried embedding some old stuff into it from the get go while doing new things, this was all naturally done before old world was a thought, but either way the direction that both tow and Aos are going it wouldn’t hurt one or the other if Aos took some of the more high fantasy stuff from fb.

ive noticed that oil washes have been getting spammed quite a bit on social media lately, but the question is do you think they look good? seems like more effort desu; gloss varnish, and then wiping most of it off raised areas with a sponge or something similar

They look just as good/better than acrylic washes with the benefit of being able to easily clean up mistakes
>>

>>
>>96968756

It depends, just like any other painting technique. Oil washes and oil-based paints over acrylic for shading and weathering have been used in regular scale modeling for a long time. I think its just that most people are always trying to find The One Technique that will magically speed up their painting tenfold, so if you focus on that kind of thing if you're a slop dispenser you'll get more engagement.

That's precisely WHY it's not important. Fringe worlds generally aren't that critical. It's why the Tau were able to grow from 1 planet to 300 planets without the Imperium really noticing or caring.

I don't think Trek autists can power up to the same level as SW autists, they are constrained by their setting as much as they are empowered by it. Star Trek has a rigidity to it that SW lacks, SW's only rules are that the Force is magic and everything else is the whim of the writer.

Sure but...what is it protecting?

Yeah it's protecting 'general territory' but there's nothing critical over there. There's no single planet that splits the Imperium in half if it gets taken. There's no super-important artifact necessary for all FTL.

Even if all 500 worlds of Ultramar were to fall, the Imperium would only have lost 1/20000th of its territory.

Not sure if this person is being sincere or not or just lacks a broader understanding of the themes this setting explores. Ultramar is important precisely because it isn't Terra or any other "critical" location in the Imperium. It's important because it is the spiritual home of Humanity, the relocation of the kind of Human experience that represented the culture that created the Men of Gold. Terra is consumed by it's purpose unable to foster any sort of real "Humanity". Malcador waged an entire cold war to make sure that "Humanity" survived in this kind of capacity.

If you absolutely must use real world analogs Terra would be the UK and Ultramar would be America.

I don't even know what happened since Lion came back.
The tyranids appeared at the beginning of 10th, they had a poll who will win some battle (and get their models revealed first) and iirc tyranids won but I don't think anything came out of that.
Then nothing happened for an entire edition and now Titus is fighting crons or something but you're saying that's a prequel?
>>
>>96969357
Because a coherent narrative would make the end-of-edition campaign less marketable or some shit.

They had a big focus on fighting the necrons in 9th ed in the pariah nexus but it got sidelined by the Lion returning. Then the Tyranids were the next big thing but that went nowhere and the focus is now apparently on necrons again since the end of the dawn of fire series. All of this shit actually preceded the plague wars in 8th edition which also didn't get resolved.

So now Titus has to liberate ultramar, which doesn't matter because it will get fucked up by mortarion just a few years later.

Vigilus and Dante's regent plotline is completely dead in the water, which is weird since at some point it seemed that they were going to do a parallel to the imperium secundus thing with Dante, Guiliman and Lion at some point IIRC
>>
>>96969357
40k is a setting not a story and treating it like a story is a cause of 90% of its problems (primarchwank, characterwank etc)
>>
>>96969398
So then shouldn't there be more effort put into making a storyline that isn't all over the place? One that makes it feel like you've made a good "investment" by buying 40k minis and makes you want to buy more?
Wouldn't a non-cluster fucked, more coherent story do more for attracting new players to purchasing said toys?
>>
>>96969517
Cont.

My theory is that they overcompensated for the negative reaction to some elements of 8th edition and took a different designer philosophy with marines(which is how we got bladeguards, the SW upgrades and the Templar upgrades), you can still see the "old" 8th designs in the dogshit BA refresh.
The dark imperium series was pushed out in 8th to flesh out the new setting but they then inexplicably decided to do a prequel series with dawn of fire(why not just do dawn of fire first?) but dawn of fire sets up this massive conflict with szarekh which is completely ignored by the previous Dark imperium books.

>>96969531
That's exactly my criticism. They are trying to create some kind of narrative which goes against the nature of the setting and are making it even more incoherent as a result

Because GW couldn't let space marines ride in cheap metal boxes, so they had to make excuses why the crude exploration vehicle is ackhually super advanced and way too advanced for the Imperial Guard. Also, because each army has to have their own model line, otherwise the bean counters cry.

I feel like the december collage theme is gonna end up being "something festive/christmasy" but maybe we should have seasonal stuff like that as a subtheme for bonus points those months instead? Like let's say mounted unit/bikers win but you're encouraged to give it a festive spin if you want etc
>>
>>96969457
Right now the most recent lore event has been the Imperium's second go at taking down the Pariah Nexus, which also coincides with a Necron civil war between the Silent King and Imotekh. Last we heard, Vashtorr showed up to fuck with everyone with the weapon he got from the Arks of Omen stuff.

The next Cawl novel is probably our best bet in actually advancing that story line

It really comes down to GW fucking up by initially having the Indomitus Crusade end after 112 years and having that be the new present status quo, but then realizing it'd be stupid to just skip the Indomitus Crusade, so they retconned it so the new status quo is merely 12 years after Gathering Storm. This fucks everything up, and Dawn of Fire was a big victim of it

The problem with GW's current method is it's the worst of both worlds. The narratives are spastic and bounce from front to front, but at the same time it stars the same central cast with a stable, rotating gallery of guest stars. Every now and then someone new pops up like the Necron Ur-Destroyer or the Tau Twinstars or DA's Lion, but they're either forgotten just as quickly or linger around like bad fart playing second fiddle to the faction's TRVE protagonist.

Funnily enough, Titus is almost a breath of freah air in contrast to how the last few narrative campaogns have been handled. He's just a normal marine doing normal marine things on a mundane, impossible battlefront while Guilliman fucks off to eo big protagonist things

I have a question:

I have a unit led by a character with a "stand back up on 2+ at the end of phase" rule, for example custodes terminator captain.
The unit is in combat with a vehicle, let's say a knight.
In the opponent's shooting phase the vehicle shoots into combat and I decide to tank the damage on the captain, who dies. I roll a 2+ and he respawns outside of engagement range at the end of the phase.

Am I correct in assuming that he comes back as part of the unit he originally led and piles in/fights like normal in the opponent's fight phase?
Or is he now a separate unit?

You can't tank it on the captain, you gotta assign the wounds to the bodyguard unit first. If the leader gets sniped out by precision though, then he returns attached to his bodyguard unit as per the rules commentary.

Here is the statline of the GIGA CALGAR deathstar.
10 models
Gravis Calgar
6 Vitctrix Guard
Victrix Champion
Victrix Ancient
Cato Sicarius

This 10 man squad has 4 epic heroes. The standard statline is T4, 2+ 4++ with 4w. In addition, the blob has the following special rules

-1 to Wound (forever)
4+++ on Calgar
Fall Back/Advance and Shoot/Charge
Free Heroic Intervention
6 inch reactive move (There is an additional strat for a second)
Bloodsurge on model death
Unit wide +1 Attack and Strength that works on All models

Average is 5 attacks ws2 s5 ap2 d2. Of course, the characters have twinlinked and hit harder.

As this blob is all Tacticus and Gravis, Uriel can give it deep strike. In cover(one model out of LoS) this saves AP 2 on a 2+ and Ap3 on a 3+ thanks to AoC spam.

What does your army do to GIGA CALGAR?
You cannot tarpit him as the squad will kill any chaff. You cannot move near him as he will reactive, perhaps twice. If you shoot they have high AP, and -1 to wound, and will then charge you during your turn.
Angron on average kills less than 3 Victrix with Strike and less than 2 with Sweep.

Ok, one final adjustment. I wasn't particularly thrilled with how dark she looked on the table so I went back for one final pass of highlights. Now I'm done.

A 10-woman squad of Banshees even with an Autarch will kill like 2 Victrix tops then immediately get eviscerated by the fight back. You just waste 300+ points to get a squad destroyed and make yourself look stupid.
>>
>>96970331
Amazing work, anon.
>>
>>96970342
Did you do the math? They hit on 2s rerolling 1, wound on 3s rerolling 1s ap2 2dmg, they ignore -1 to wound due to anti.
I don't think they clear the entire calgar squad but they should get rid of victrix on average.

Not really a mini, but I've been working on my lightbox.
Following TSanon's lightbox advice yesterday, I couldnt do it as clean as crisp as him with a white background.
I guess I'm doing something wrong, but I'll just go back to my black background. Maybe find a black paper to have it more matte and not reflect as much light.
But it was worth the try.

That land raider on average with Oath giving +1 to wound kills 2 Macraggots(3 if the HK highrolls) when they use AoC. As punishment for getting close, the Macraggot squad gets d6+12 inches of movement to run away and bloodsurge into a different unit, avoiding the Judiciar squad.
>>
>>96970200
I"ok bet Lelith +10 Wyches in Spectacle could do pretty well into this for half the points.
>>
>>96970372
Yes. The Banshees still only force a 4+ save on the Victrix and it takes two unsaved attacks to kill one Marine. 24 wounds of Marines means they need 12 attacks to go through just to clear the bodyguard, and they only have 18 to work with. Even if we're generous and say that all of the Hits and Wounds are successful, the Save still cuts half of those out, leaving 9 unsaved attacks for 18 damage meaning two Victrix survive. This makes it impossible for the Exarch to swing at Cato or Calgar, as she only gets 3 attacks with the Executioner at 3 damage a hit. This does go to a 5+ save, but even then this means ideally 1/3 attacks will be saved if all three land and wound. This kills one of the remaining Victrix and leaves the remaining one with 1 wound left.
Importantly, this means the Autarch is wounding on 4+. With 4 attacks at 3 damage a piece, it's impossible for the Autarch to clear the Victrix, Cato, and Calgar all together. Considering the Wound roll now cuts the attacks in half, we have two attacks going in. Even if we're lenient and say the Victrix dies, Cato isn't going down even if the attack goes through, and Calgar is going to remain untouched.
Meanwhile Cato has a 9-attack Sweep profile and Calgar has six attacks that are 2+ to Wound, and every unsaved attack is a dead Banshee.
>>
>>96970414
Forgot to summarize; so if we are EXTREMELY lenient and say that every single attack from the Banshee squad hits and wounds, they at best are only going to manage to kill the honor guard.
>>
>>96970372
Sadly the Banshees will only kill an average of 2.5 solo. Jain will pick a couple off but she'll fucking explode on the clap back.

Banshees are pretty much designed to kill basic Marines and nothing else. Trying to toss them at a Terminator or Bladeguard squad is just going to get them mulched.

Ick. I have 9 of them. Guess I’m kitbashing an xv15 out of a fire warrior to bring me up to size.
>>
The one melee deathstar that does it is Incubi with an Archon in Cartel.
31 attacks hitting on 2s critting on 5s with Sustained.
You get ~7.5 to 8devwounds, spend 2 aspect tokens for 10 devwounds which kills 5 blueberries. Regular wounds get 5 past AoC which kills 2 and a half more for 7 and a half dead blueberries.
Agonizer will scum 7 mortals so they'd kill literally everything but Calgar.
>>
>>96970640
Just use an empty base and say its stealthed.

Also not sure if they're even worth taking anymore. They got more expensive, no more support systems, and forced 5s I think.

Shit sucks. 11e is going to go from trainwreck to nuclear bomb at this rate.

Isn't Drazhar a better leader than Archon for incubi now that they don't reroll wounds? +1 to wound is still very good.

>>96970722
Depends on detachment. rerolling hits to fish for 5+ sustained has infinitely more value than +1 to wound.

These are the best fat bastards GW has ever made. Why does AoS get all the good fatties, you'd think 40k would have more obese daemons/ people since there can be trillions of people per world. A slaanesh glutton gorging on flesh, a khornate glutton gorging on bloody flesh, a nurgle glutton gorging on rotten flesh, a tzeentch glutton gorging on.... tattooed covered flesh that consuming it acts as a cannibalistic form of reading??
Look we should have more fat models like this in 40k
