Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR-era D&D, derived systems, and compatible content.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to early Dungeons & Dragons - less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about. Any OSR games and related topics, including OD&D, AD&D 1e/2e, B/X, NuSR, etc. are welcome here!

Goblins. You can never kill enough goblins.
>>
>>97025032
Historically they are liked.

>>97024938
>TQ
Both have their own uses but I tend to favor goblins as enemies. Just got that classic oomph to them. Though if Goblins are PC races Kobolds make for simple enough replacements.
>>
>>97025261
I have been thinking about having a small mountain region in my game have a Kobold infestation. They've moved into abandoned dwarven fortresses and towns. They figured out how the dwarven stills works and are making vast amounts of alcohol to hire hill giants and ogres to boost their defenses. Drop some hooks for PC's as nearby lords would love to nip this problem in the bud.
>>
>>97025294
Ive wanted to do a "Troll War" campaign personally for a while.
TLDR a troll infestation gets out of hand and the PCs have to help push back infestations of them. possibly throw in some unique trolls (like multiple headed ones) for variety.
>>
>>97025304
That sounds pretty fun. I don't think I've ever included a troll in a game. Feels like I should at some point.

My current projects elevator pitch is
>Vietnam War with Forest Goblins
Pic related is a draft of the hexmap so far.
The Rough intended play is going to be a pseudo sandbox/hexcrawl mixed with dungeon crawls and picking missions/some randomly generated objectives. Hoping to simulate the feel of an actual war.
>>
>>97025396
That sounds pretty cool. Will the goblins have other monsters to help them out or can PC's do faction play with them? Like Goblins and PC's both trying to woo Lizardmen to their side to make an upcoming battle go easier.
>>
>>97025406
That genuinely wasnt something i considered but im writing that down. thanks anon
The focus was very much to be entirely around killing goblins and really leaning into the Vietnam war theme. Been researching historical stuff, reading up on historical accounts and tactics to draw inspiration. I want the module im writing to teach DMs how to run that combat as war approach, show them what tactics the Goblins will use, and how they can apply them.
Also the dungeon crawls into Goblin lairs are going to be inspired by the VC tunnels. Also going to throw in some abandoned jungle temples for funsies.
>>
>>97025421
Goblin war tunnels are interesting. It could help if they occasionally have some magic stuff to aid in it's defense. Like rot grubs in a spike pit, spells that trigger alarms, even tunnels that dead end over a pit with an ooze or slime they use to dispose of waste and intruders. The idea has a lot to it.
>>
>>97025465
Oh definitely.
One of the fun ideas ive had so far after reading books was adapting Operation Wandering Soul as a spell
>Wandering Souls
3rd Level Magic User Spell
Duration: 2d6 turns
Range: 1 Mile (Follows the caster)
>Fills the area with spectral moans, illusionary Ghosts, and false signs of haunting. Humanoids/Demihumans within the area are forced to take a morale check every turn or flee.
>DM secret information
Has a 1 in 6 chance if cast at night to summon 2d4 Spectres after the spell duration ends. The sounds continue, but are clearly not originating from the spell.
>>
>>97025523
Hell yeah.
>>
>>97025523
What system do you plan to run the system in? Any restrictions on race/class for your players?
>>
>>97024938
I don't want to stir shit but I do think that 1st edition D&D is partly responsible for the current state of fantasy and science fiction where self-inserts and power fantasies are realised for everyday people. Where would we have a precedent for the Star Wars' Rae (the Mary Sue) without the fact that women (or just anyone) could play a game of D&D and make a female warrior queen that goes to legendary levels of XP from the lowest rungs of society (Level 1 Fighter with medium armour and a shitty sword)?
>>
>>97025748
You do realize that "women playing the fantasy game" is a good thing, right? Ray was made by the soulless corpo shits that would sell their own mum if it made end of year profit tick slightly up.

I'm absolutely for women and minorities playing the games they want. I am saying that the mass of people weren't FULLY REALISED as the subject, in fantasy and science fiction, before D&D 1e (or just the 70s). And D&D was the perfect game to allow for self-inserts and power fantasies.
You might have writers in the pulps and weird fiction who were minorities or women, but they still wrote stories that weren't Mary Sue and Ray tier. But the female writers of fantasy that I like (such as CL Moore) wrote women who were flawed or vulnerable or even bad. I don't like this idea that characters (even in D&D) have to be squeaky clean Mary Sues.
>>
>>97025781
It's still reaching. We can't control who gets their first exposure to this kind of fantasy through 1e.

There is nonzero chance that some brainlet whose ideas led to creating slop like modern Star Wars was, at some point, inspired by people who played 1e. But it's inevitable. RPG as a hobby was far more open to minorities, women and such than a lot of spaces back in the 70s and 80s.

That being said, I think it's more about the kind of person. I've been playing for a while now, over many systems. And Mary Sue shit seems relegated to either kids or just kind of crappy people. The kind of brainlets that idolize Homelander, think Ray is some sort of improvement over Luke or think that Patrick Bateman is worth emulating.
>>
>>97025659
Just gonna do BX. BX is my go to for short term campaigns/oneshots, and i use Rules Cyclopedia for longer term campaigns (plus a few houserules aka rebuffing thiefskills.)
>>97025781
Thats a fair point, mary sue behavior is always bad. Ive actually got a new black friend of mine who wants to get into D&D, so im gonna likely run some BX or C&C for him and his other friends soon.

I guess it is a stretch but I wonder what makes people lose the dimensions of a character in the contemporary scene of fiction and movies. Take pic related. If you roleplayed her, she still has flaws and mistakes and suffers deadly consequences for it. But the world doesn't want to have a Hollywood movie of Boudica because the reality of her life is too grim and she wasn't a perfect, mythical warrior queen that people yearn for.
Maybe I'm just obsessing over the design of D&D's XP / class system. I guess all characters are supposed to be plebs when they start and have to grind to get where they are. It's just there's no real flaws (rule-wise) like they have in GURPS. So a character can be played as a flawless one if you don't add flavour to the RAW rules.
Then again, you aren't born perfect in D&D. You have to slowly climb to the top and can die very easily doing so. And maybe it wouldn't have its appeal if you made it a slogfest where you have disadvantages on every roll because your character is mentally ill, or struggles with PTSD, or contracts measles.
>>
>>97025826
I don't even think it's about being grim. There are plenty of needlessly grim characters and even settings in Hollywood. I think it's the slop effect. Smooth edges, simplified archetypes go down well and generate revenue.
From my observations a decent player is going to give some flaws to their character voluntarily. Role-playing a dumb barbarian is fun. Or cranky wizard. One of the upsides of OSR style play is that when things are not hardcoded into the system people are more willing to have fun with them.

Kobolds kind of suck.
Goblins are not that great either, but kobolds are basically worse goblins.
McGoblins at home.
>>
>>97026537
Kobolds are discounted goblins in chainmail. Like many things in DnD, stuff stuck around out of tradition.
>>
>>97024938
Both, variety over time is important. Having two or more factions of short violent idiots at war with each other for players to engage with is a feature not a bug.
Probably don't need 10 though. Fucking Xvarts.
>>
>>97026638
Xvarts are just about as lame a design as a monster can be.
Later editions bringing them back is also pretty tasteless. "Hey guys, remember XVARTS?!"
>>

I like both but Id say Kobolds. I find their focus on using traps to make up for their weakness a really nice touch. I run then as LE ans very organized. They will happily die for their tribe. Basically an army of brainwashed fanatically loyal soldier. My goblin are more chaotic and erratic in their behavior.

Is there still space for a one true OSR mega system that is basically BX but has ruels for rune magic, alchemy, foraging herbs, random setting events generation, trade, mass combat, etc, without being overly autistic like ACKS, or super handwavy like most other systems? Yes it will have FOE shit but it will be based around the core of 3d6 straight down and race as class. No extra freakshit classes. No dumbass oversimplified rules. No gigantic 50 dollar gold leaf rulebook Kickstarter bullshit.

It sounds like someone read a Bizarro comic and thought making a D&D monster out of it would be funny.

Which is why I think snorting nilbog dust may be the ultimate panacea.

One extremely lesser known ability of Bizarro's is that inhaling part of him can cure blindness. Inhaling the resulting dust after Bizarro was destroyed in an explosion cured Lois Lane's sister of being blind, which is a clear reference to the first Bizarro comic (which was heavily inspired by Frankenstein), where Bizarro befriended a blind girl, and after Bizarro later exploded, the resulting light inexplicably cured the blind girl.

Bizarro works on Bizarro World Logic, where Up is Down and Hello is Goodbye, so it does make some sense that if a person previously defined by an ailment was exposed to strong amounts of Bizarro energy, they would become defined by the inverse: a blind girl would instead have excellent vision, a deaf girl would gain excellent hearing, and so on.

Using the same logic, if you were suffering from some particular ailment/curse, caught a nilbog, ground him up and snorted him, you might end up with the exact opposite of whatever dehibilitation you have.

How you'd grind up a creature that heals from damage is where the plan hits a snag.

t. phoneanon
>>
>>97025801
The thing is, once 1e blew up, anyone could treat it as their first "story manual". That included women, ethnic minorities, and queer players which was great but it also meant plenty of people took 1e's levelling logic as their whole narrative worldview. That's why modern Star Wars feels like a progression chart: the beats match what those players always thought a story is.

And it's the same instinct behind 1e boomers who unironically think Rey is a great character or admire Patrick Bateman, or Homelander. They read characters like stat blocks: most power wins, end of analysis.

Thankfully 2e brough some taste into the picture with deep character development, narrative depth, storytelling, story arcs, and strong plots. And while still far from perfect, MUCH less misogynism and racism.
>>
>>97025801
>>97029176
Elaborating.

Thanks in large part to Hickman, 2e steered things away from 1e's power ladder obsession. It pushed proper character motives, proper arcs, and plots that hanged on narrative choices rather than character sheets. 2e expects players to treat characters as PEOPLE with histories, motives, and depth. Not as bundles of upgrades.

And if you didn't work on your character development and involvement in the story, sorry, no XP for you, which kept the worse 1e boomers way from our tables.

Thanks to this, 2e tables generally cultivated a much healthier mindset. More nuance, more attention to relationships and moral consequences. Far less tolerance for the "most powerful = best character" mindset.

And what's best is that shift tended to show socially as well. Players shaped by 2e's emphasis on depth are, in practice, far more likely to be decent Black, Latinx, and LGBT allies. People who actually think in terms of character, context, and empathy rather than simple hierarchy.

This is sorely needed in these difficult times in the USA. Do I think 2e will save us? No, but it will definitely play its small part, however indirectly.

Anybody who's ever played a campaign with kenders and tinker gnomes can never go back to another setting. I don’t know if this is the right thread to ask in
But are there any TTRPGs that can just be a big fuckin random rogue-like?
I’ve heard you can kinda hack DCC to play like a big randomized permadeath roguelike, but I feel like you’d need to know the system and all the supplements and modules and extra content and stuff to be able to organize it and do that. But it sounds like a really fun idea. Find completely random items sampled from like… all the possible content. Random characters, classes, skills and spells, gear etc. randomized dungeons. Throw em in, they die or succeed and keep on until they die. Basically like… forming a whole roguelike around the solo funnel idea.

But maybe someone’s already done this.
Anyone know?
>>
>>97030163
I mean you could always use the AD&D dungeon masters guide to roll up a random dungeon and just keep doing it just ahead of the players. Just randomize character creation completely. Not sure who would enjoy it as a player but I'm certain that someone would.
>>
>>97030163
Why would you want to do that? That sounds boring as hell, just play a videogame if that's what you like. What makes OSR really great is having engaging stories and compelling plots and character arcs and character backstories and an adventure with a clear goal that can be defeated. Nobody likes dying. Maybe you enjoy killing PCs, but I can guarantee players don't like that.
>>
>>97030174
>use the AD&D dungeon masters guide to roll up a random dungeon
That's a bad meme. Random dungeons don't make any fucking sense, don't do that.

WRONG. It was Belgium that was founded in the pages of The General in 1964 – if not, how do you explain why Belgium didn't start until the magazine was released? This PROVES that Belgium was founded in response to the release of Advanced Squad Leader.

I had a dream I was playing a really old school video game. ( though it was solo 1v1 combat based instead of party based. )
It had an interesting mechanic where you could get bonuses to hit in exchange for giving enemies an advantage against you on the retaliation, depending on enemy type. So one enemy type you'd just trade a +1 to hit for the enemy getting a +1 to hit in a 1:1 ratio. Other enemies might get +damage, special attacks etc. It looked like a THACO table but since it was a videogame it would calculate the probabilities for you, so if you did +5 to hit it would just say something like "+25% to hit, enemy +35% to hit."
Just thought it was interesting enough to post about. Wish that game was real.

Well, it's page 5. Shall we try a new proper thread, since this hijack thread was made on page 5 and was allowed to stay? I have no idea what is expected here.

kobolds have changed a few times... Holmes for example simple called them small dwarf-like creatures
dogbolds were from Moldvay Basic, which described kobolds as dog-like with scaly skin and the artwork next to it showed them with a literal dog head.Mentzer BECMI used the same description sans art. B2 in its rumor tables also called them "small dog men".
BECMI released in Japanese in '85 and Wizardry released a few months later with new art that looked at the games sprites, the BECMI descriptions and decided that kobolds were literal dogs like pic related - completely shaping how they're depicted in Japanese media for the 40 years since.
kobolds... I don't know what depiction I like. small dwarf men, dog men / bootleg gnolls, rat men, yet another dragon worshiping lizard man but small.

You need to take your dog back to wherever you got him from, 'cause if his head looks like that, something funny is going on there

Also lizard men don't worship dragons.
