>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, Judge Dredd,
HeroClix, Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, Open Combat, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void,
Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenos Rampant, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.
Archon Studio, Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Mantic, North Star Military Figures,
OnePageRules, Osprey, Para Bellum, Seb Games, Spellcrow, TTCombat, Victrix, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

No, not for Christmas specifically. I ordered some italeri bunkers and a tablecloth, along with the 2nd edition of dragon rampant. Hope I'll be able to do some fantasy wargaming with my son too.
What are you working on now? I've this vision of a fantasy barbarian army based on victrix models. I also ordered some conquest old Dominion Varangians because I think they'll make for neat monstrous infantry for 28mm games.

Played Xenos Rampant for the first time at the weekend.
Very fun system once you get the rules going, heavy infantry felt a little underpowered though.

Maybe my trench crusade mini pre order that was meant to arrive in september will come soon
>>
>>97105764

Yeah, there's no difference in firepower between heavy and light infantry, except heavies are more consistent with it. In my experience heavy weapons are more effective than AP weapons, though it might be because I'm typically firing at elite infantry.

Who makes GW style 25 bases? I don't feel like paying them at gold price

Legit, Citadel as you say, or a lot of miniature companies use D&G Ltd who make bases very similar to GW's 25mm slottas but the bevel is very very slightly different.

The Chinese ones with just a small rough circle in the underside like my pic, need a little filing around the bottom rim normally.

I use Wargame Base World and get 100 bags of 25mm, 28.5mm, 32mm, 40mm rounds

I have basing autism so have thought a lot about it. Other people just do whatever and paint way more stuff than I.
>>

aliexpress has them.
I recall that a few years ago I bough over a 500 of them for like 10 dollars including shipping.

Painted up some mechs for MAC Attack.

I’ve really been enjoying the ruleset. It scratches the big robot itch in a very tight, efficient game and even includes some infantry/vehicle/artillery options.

The main issue we have is the random objective system. While I totally support random objectives to keep the game fresh and to encourage well-balanced lists, you can roll yourself into a basically impossible win condition pretty easily. You designate your mechs into squads before generating deployment/objectives. If you happen to have 1 mech in Squad A, and your objective is to get one mech from Squad A across the entire table, then your opponent can basically ignore their objective and just thrash your one mech to win by default. It’s fun to play tough games, but we’ve had more than a few of them basically decided before deployment.

Still, it does nearly everything I want a big robot game to do without being a slog. Would recommend.

Apparently the Discord is a tourneyfag echo chamber demanding everything either is generic and equally the same, or demanding their pet armies buffed to hell. The subreddit has a lot of complaints, the Telegram group is mostly quiet and the local scene is grim.
>>
>>97107944
>tourneyfag echo chamber
Weird, the people who got me into OPR are "28 community" players who are all the biggest narrativefags alive. I like it because I can use my GW models/lore (sorry /awg/!) with a much more permissive ruleset that seems amenable to conversions and weird equipment choices and such. I can see tourney """"people"""" liking the simplicity, but they shouldn't be catered to imo, or you lose soul quick.

Nice Grineer.
>>
>>97107991
Tell that to the dude(s) in charge. They seem determined to listen to the Discord and tourney players only, despite most people enjoying the game for letting them use their collections and the fact that the game has players active the entire match.Narrative OPR is peak, but everything is turning more and more into modern 40k from what I've seen in my own and games I watched.
>>97108174
The "lore" is pretty bad. OPR is doing this thing where they are doing most armies/forces as 99-100% complete opposites to GW lore, not sure if for legal reasons or just because the "lore" writers are unimaginative, but it is beginning to leak into the actual games, with OPR "Lore" changing armies - like Dwarves in Fantasy.
>>97108186
No argument there.
>>
>>97108247
Why the fuck would you listen to tournamentfags. Specially when you are not selling them models and your rules are "free"
What is this insanity?!
>>
>>97108198
Damn straight, anon.
>>
>>97108265
I wish I could tell you why. I have a weird suspicion that there will be a new push for OPR minis to be used exclusively more and more in the future. Feels like OPR is trying to sprint to a bad ending by doing everything possibly wrong for the game and community.

>>
>>97108331
According to the multiple OPR Rangers in my local community and greater region, there is a big push for an "OPR Ecosystem" that has been the goal ever since the new plastic starter box succeeded. OPR has hit a weird point where it is no longer alt-GW but suddenly wants to be a new and unique thing that is monetizable.
>>
>>97108379
The cool thing about OPR was the setting and model agnostic thing.
Remove that and you are kind of missing the point of OPR.
God I'm getting old, I just want to buy a product and for the company to stop messing with it after I buy it for fuck sake.
>>
>>97108379
>no longer alt-GW but suddenly wants to be [regular GW]
>>
>>97108410
The setting was great because it was so vague that you could /yourdudes/ any way you wanted. Now it is being forced into either GW cloned lore or the absolute opposite, anti-GW lore for copyright and legal reasons. Model agnostic is great, but the army updates dropping tons of units time and time again is getting old for many people.
>>
>>97107667

>>
>>97108435
>dropping tons of units
Are they getting outright deleted? Insane. You could build a list and not have it be valid by the time you're done. Man, there's a reason I love dead rulesets.
>>
>>97108801
One of the reason why group dropped current 40k, move to OPR and then went back to 40k 3rd/4th since well we already had the armies.
Mother fuckers changed rules faster than we had time to build, paint and play with our current armies.
>>
this is such insane echo-chamber bullshit, it has pushed me over the edge to actually make a post

>>97107849
OPR has always made two updates when a new edition is released, the initial edition push, and then a month later a patch to fix any issues with the books/calculator, and after that it stays frozen for an entire year

>>97107944
the developers literally added a shitton of new rules and upgrades to make everything less generic and equally the same, which goes against what the tourneyfags want, and is pushing the game to be more narrative than ever

>>97107991
don't listen to that raging faggot, OPR is still very much a narrative game, he's just on some fucking irate rant

>>97108247
when a new army is released they change the names of a few units, and usually add more new units, so the idea of "OPR lore changing armies" as a bad thing is insane. also the developers have already stated that they're working on a way to strip away all the OPR lore names for faggot like you who flip their shit when "stone golem" is renamed to "coal golem"
>>
>>97108282
there is nothing about OPR minis being used exclusively more, and they actually keep adding more and more systems to the custom builder so people can be even more inventive with using their own minis. again, you're a faggot

>>97108379
"OPR ecosystem" - what the fuck does that even mean? your statement makes even less sense when you consider that the new plastic box was literally funded just a month ago and there has been no push for anything

>>97108435
what units were dropped time and time again? what the fuck are you talking about? they literally added half a dozen new units with the latest edition. again, incredibly faggoted

>>97108801

>>
Do I believe the anti-OPR sperg or the OPR sperg now?
>>
>>97109005
I am OPR-sperg. anti-OPR sperg is probably just a faggot who doesn't like change or the idea that OPR is successful now, so he's just making shit up. everything that I am stating are actual verifiable facts by contrast. some people just have a personal vendetta against OPR, and whilst I understand not liking the system, I think it's retarded to just come on here and lie out of boredom or whatever

While not who you were replying to, they deleted a sizable chunk of most armies. Metal stuff is gone shop-wide. Prices are close to GW now as well.
>>
>>97110215
>they deleted a sizable chunk of most armies
Perhaps it is just them updating models?
>metal stuff is gone shop-wide
I am not surprised as metal has gone up in price if I recall correctly.
>prices are close to GW now as well
That's very disappointing. Is it inevitable that all alternative producers of minis eventually reach GW tier pricing?
>>
>>97110285
Not him nor KoW player, but updating models plays part in it, but not their main motivator as they are also combining armies into a more digestible and marketable sizes as part of their new edition launch. For example they had free dwarves and main dwarves as separate armies, which used almost entirely same model range, and combined them into just dwarves. Or their dark elf proxy and nightstalkers combined into one army instead of simply being allies that freely taken units from each other.

>Is it inevitable that all alternative producers of minis eventually reach GW tier pricing?

Consider checking out Heavy Gear. It uses a "point buy" system for objectives. Where you need a certain amount of them depending on the size of the battle and get Victory Points for each of them. You need to both fulfill your own objectives and stop the opponent from doing his - it's entirely possible for both sides to not get a single VP or get all VP and still end in a draw.
