I like the whole fairy-tale contract thing where someone ends up being bound to a Fey creature's service because of a careless word or by being tricked into agreeing with something more than they'd thought was asked of them. Is that a hook you could use?backstory basics we workshopped together was she accidentaly went into feywilde as a child, grew up there, but was banished by a fey lord for poaching or something, and can only return after slaying 1001 worthy beasts in the material plane. Right now she's on the hunt for a deep dragon, the party is in underdark. They should kill it within a few sessions so I wanna mark that as a big moment for her character and have some reveals/developments, especially because she joined halfway so havent spent too much time on her character yetI was thinking some possible twists- she has some brother who also ended up in feywilde but he's working for rival court or something, she doesnt remember him but resemblence is striking, and he's trying to stop her from doing something- or she is (or has) a clone fetch, ie a duplicate of the actual human child, she just doesn't know it (either as a player or character), and the real kid is still alive and fine- or the time she grew up in the feywilde didnt pass in the material plane, so there are parents still looking for a small child missing in the woods everyday, she doesn't remember them of courseI also have been having a "fey vault" in a "domain of coin/greed" where they sometimes receive a coin from a few creature they help and can magically teleport to this bank/museum run by goblin that allow them to pick wacky items in exchange for coins, my players always love when those come back, especially because the items aren't identifiable (But they spent 1 coin to buy a catalog)

I'm a decade late to the party but man looking at the fluff for the Greatwyrms in Fizban's and no wonder they're confused with gods in the fluff.>bunch of really old dragons combine power>result is explicitly greater than the sum of it's parts>skills and presumably carry over tooThe moment you take that kind of archetype and apply it to a dragon who isn't a lazy fuck you'd get something hilariously broken with 100+ character levels scattered over random shit since even a bunch of level 5s stack up fast. This feels like the kind of concept that shouldn't show up outside of an Epic handbook.
Is a stress/madness/sanity system a bad idea?
>>97141413Depends on the genre you're going for.
>>97141414Just a general horror theme but I wasn't sure if something like that meshed with 5e well.
>>97141418I'd imagine that sort of game is gonna revolve around avoiding combat in a lot of ways because things just aren't as spooky when ripping their dicks off is a viable option.
>>97141422Ah yeah. I should probably just leave it to horror "theme'd" and not actual horror then cause my friends probably still want to roll dice and fight stuff.
>>97141413>>97141418This >>97141422 tends to be the big problem.I tend to find the closest you can get to horror is a mystery being somewhat spooky. Where a monster might be picking off the townsfolk and the PCs are tasked with finding out what it is and tracking it down.Madness/sanity doesn't really add to that. Since typically as soon as the PCs see the scary monster they're going to try and kill the scary monster. Those sorts of rules tend to work better in the context of cursed items, madness-inducing plagues, or things of that nature. Stuff that the players can lean into by roleplaying a descent into madness, with the upside that a cursed weapon driving them mad probably makes them better at killing things.
>>97141470Makes sense. It's why Curse of Strahd has the Amber sarcophagi in the Amber temple. I have some ideas that'll probably work.

anybody have an actual good hexcrawl procedure for 5e?the more i go into the rabbithole the more garbage I read (every fucker who has dmed for 3 months seems to have his own blog with overlong articles about his own perfect procedure)things that are objectively good: giving players clear choices, sense of wonder, exploration, freedom, surprising even the dm with random encounters, which makes for fun improv and scenariosthings that suck: unclear procedures or steps (do you find everything in an hex? do you travel inside the hex or only between hexes? how do players know they should keep searching a hex or move on? etc), when more time is spent resolving weather/lost/veer/travel/encounters than actually engaging with encounters, conversely when normal behaviors might break the system or result in loss of immersion (going backwards etc)considering maybe point crawl maybe insteadI guess im dreaming of finding something that actually works out there instead of having to come up with my own custom like everything 5e

>>97145993vanishing people away, causing madness, abducting stuff. you know, stupid malevolent stuff.
noob here, how can you capture a monster alive without harming it, using non magic shit like nets ropes chains, but I'm getting confused trying to actually understand grappled incapacitated prone and restrained conditions
>>97146113>causing madnessThat's a bit easier. Crown of Madness, Bestow Curse, and Symbol are all good spells for that. There aren't really any class features that would be particularly better for causing long-term madness.>vanishing people away, abducting stuffThis is probably the harder part. Teleporting yourself is one thing, teleporting other people, or unwilling people especially tends to be restricted to higher levels. The 2014 rules let you Plane Shift someone directly to the Feywild, but that's a 7th level spell. Funnily enough I think the best option there is actually Artificer. You only need two levels in order to make your own Bag of Holding, which is a very good way to be able to shove someone in a bag and carry them wherever you need to go. They only have enough air for 10 minutes, but that's still quite a lot of time for trying to escape. Beyond Artificer, I'd say Wizard actually gets you most of the spells you'd want. Illusionist or Enchantment being the most trickery-focused there. Glamour Bard or Fey Warlock are also options, but the Charisma focus doesn't overlap with Artificer as much, and they each miss out on some helpful spells. You don't really need more than 13 Int for 2 levels in Artificer though, so it's still quite viable.
>>97142337So minmaxers will stop bitching about non-optimal racial choices.
>>97146383i was thinking about going divine soul since we're "patching" it for 2024, which we are playing, by choosing one cleric domain's spell lists. so divine soul with the trickery spell list is what gave me the idea
Racial bonuses sound flavourful but don't really create that fantasy. It would tell more of a story if you couldn't distribute ability scores so freely in the first place and you were comparing your character to the average person rather than to other potential PCs with the same stats but different racial bonuses >my race gets +2 intelligence, demonstrating their keen intellect and vast cultural knowledge! anyway I rolled a 7 and I'm dumping INT so I'm still dumber than a commoner>my race doesn't get a strength bonus but I am putting 9 point buy points into it so it's still a 15. my muscle elf is way brawnier than my 8+2=10 STR "orcs are naturally strong" cleric buddy
>>97146302>how can you capture a monster alive without harming itWell, first and foremost, it's worth noting that if you reduce a creature to 0 HP with a melee attack, you have the option to render it unconscious instead of killing it, according to RAW.Putting that aside though>conditionsGrappled is something you can achieve with a free hand in place of one of your attacks. Restrained is something that sometimes gets paired with Grappled as a stronger grab, but can also be its own thing. For example, a Crocodile bite grapples and restrains someone, while a Net only restrains someone.>incapacitatedThis is more typically linked to other conditions. Paralyzed, Petrified, Stunned, Unconscious. Basically it's a shorthand for someone who can't act at all. >ProneNot really relevant to capture. It combines well with Grappled, because you can easily knock someone prone and then grab them to prevent them from standing back up, but that's about it.>ropes chainsThese are better defined within the 2024 rules, where you can apply them to a grapples, incapacitated, or restrained creature. The big difficulty with using them is that the DC to escape makes it possible for a bound creature to free themselves within a matter of minutes as long as they're constantly using actions to try to escape. To some extent you probably want to talk to your DM about this if you're planning on making a dedicated monster-catcher sort of character.
>>97146628I opted not to mention Sorcerer since it lacked Bestow Curse and Symbol as some of the better madness-inducing options, but Divine Soul actually solves that by getting access to the Cleric list. Modify Memory is another good one Trickery gives you there.I'm less sure Divine Soul's other features are particularly helpful for Fey Trickery, but the spells are what's going to be doing most of the heavy lifting here anyway. That and the possibility of shoving your enemies into a bag. Though with the 2024 rules there's also another option there. Namely, magic-item crafting means that for 10 days of work, 200gp of materials, and the right tool proficiency, you can make your own bag of holding. Multiple, in fact. That cuts out any need to fiddle with Artificer levels in order to ensure access. That could also combine with the 2024 Bastion rules in order to give yourself a place to keep whoever you're abducting. I forget if there's a specific facility for storing prisoners though.
>>97146674Brilliant explanation thank you so much!!!
>>97146649That's because racial bonuses merely influence the average.Personally what I dislike more is that WotC has consistently removed other flavorful features at the same time as removing ability scores. They didn't bother to replace the modifiers with anything interesting.
>>97146628This is how I built it when we converted to 24 mid-campaign, but it's just "gains access to Cleric list" plus a set of spells that would make sense for a character in the good-aligned zone.
need some advice, anons. I've been playing in a curse of strahd campaign and we just hit level 4, which means feat time. I'm currently playing a full support tiefling bard whose only source of damage comes from Firebolt(the DM let me take it due to some confusion at chargen), which is from his infernal heritage. I plan to multiclass into Sorc to play up him embracing the devil flames to help people(yes, generic I know). It's feat time though, and if I take a feat that gives me +1 Int(he's a travelling wiseman of exiled elven descent, and the party face/general lore skillsbitch), he'll get to his next modifier, so I was looking at these feats. I'm leaning towards the tiefling feat, but...>Flames of Phlegethos(Tiefling feat) - reroll 1s for damage when doing Fire Damage, also everything in a 5 foot radius catches fire if it can, and if enemies attack me they take damage>Observant: can read lips and get +5 Passive Perception(he currently has the highest passive perception already)>Linguist : gain 3 more languages and can make ciphers>Keen Mind: always know which way is north and can accurately recall anything he has seen or heard in the last month>Skill Expert

So they didn’t reprint the Gunner feat in the new Artificer Book- meaning if you’re strictly using 2024 rules your only method to removing the loading property on a Firearm is to get the magic weapon Repeating Shot… which is attunement and a specific item so you couldn’t get something like a Vicious Weapon with that property without homebrew.

How are we feeling about the new changelings gaining near-universal advantage on all Charisma checks? The new changelings in Eberron: Forge of the Artificer are mostly the same as those in Monsters of the Multiverse, down to being fey... but "While shape-shifted with this trait, you have Advantage on Charisma checks."I find it somewhat dull. It is just flat-out advantage on all Charisma checks, even those completely unrelated to impersonation. There is no longer any impetus to try to gain advantage on Charisma checks.
>>97152841I think part of that is just how some of the rules work now in 2024. A Disguise Kit adds your proficiency bonus to checks, but gives you Advantage instead if you have proficiency with a skill as well.So someone with proficiency in Disguise Kits and Deception trying to fool someone with a disguise would roll the same thing as a shapeshifted Changeling: Deception with proficiency and advantage. It also just gives it an edge over simply casting Disguise Self, which is also a positive for making a racial trait feel more useful.
>>97153059But the changeling would gain advantage even on Charisma checks totally unrelated to deception.
>>97149177Something along the lines of >"I don't think there are rules on an oil barrel being lit on fire, so how about we use the Keg of Alchemist Fire to accomplish this? Sound good?"And then do that. >>97152841>"While shape-shifted with this trait, you have Advantage on Charisma checks."It's probably fine- you can use this as a Sorcerer, Paladin, Bard, or Warlock to have automatic advantage on all Dispel Magic ability checks. Outside of that, it's excellent in social encounters. I've read some people don't like it cause its tougher for GMs to give bonuses in those moments- which I don't agree with since you can just reduce the DC needed for that check for good Roleplay.
>>97153132And? The changeling could also use their shapeshifting to make themselves look more beautiful, or more scary. It just seems like a real non-issue. If racial traits were still more detailed and complicated, then maybe it'd be an inconsistency worth caring about. But the Changeling only has two listed features, so cutting out half the situations in which one of them applies is just sort of cruel.
>>97152433No.
>>97146649I keep racial bonuses and added background bonuses, then added a simple restriction:>Ability score increases from races and backgrounds cannot increase a score above 16.So you can always cap any ability score from a background’s +1, but members of a given race will still on average be more adept in their increased ability score.

Bit of a shame that there is no fiendish Sorc' subclasses in the mainline book; I do recall that Brancalonia has the Heresiarch, but it doesn't go beyond 6. How the fuck exactly heavy obscurement works? Do people outside the darkness bubble have disadvantage to hit stuff inside or the disadvantages cancel eachoter out like some people say?
Can't tell if it's 2024 Stealth rules that are retarded or just me, but I'm trying to set up a goblin ambush and it occurred to me: what happens if the goblins successfully stay unnoticed but end up lower in the Initiative order than my party members? I presume that the goblins remain hidden until they attack or are found, but is rolling Initiative without there being an immediate threat going to tip off my players that something is about to happen? Do they just perform whatever action or hold something in anticipation of an attack?
>>97154334they cancel out due to poorly written rules. however, it still prevents opportunity attacks and spellcasting
>>97154389Ok thanks, there is actual official source on that so i can shove it in the face of the dm?
My GM keeps putting us in situations where we have to sneak into a camp or a cave, but they're always heavily guarded (we can't just force our way in because we'd get swarmed by enemies). That's fine, not everything is solved with brute strength... the problem is that I have no idea what to do in those situations as a barbarian.I usually feel useless in those moments and I just let the casters handle everything. The casters use find familiar and minor illusion to distract the enemies and let us slip through, perfect. But I'd also like to contribute somehow, yet I always freeze up in those situations and end up staying quiet while they solve the problem. What strategies or ideas could a full martial like a barbarian or fighter use to deal with a problem like that? Any ideas?
>>97155119If someone catches you, you can intimidate them. Bend or break something as an excuse to intimidate with an athletics check.
>>97155119If you're playing the 2024 rules, you should have more options as you gain levels. Primal Knowledge helps in terms of using Stealth or Perception for example. If you're playing 2014, then Totem Warrior is one of the easier options for utility, since you can use something like Speak with Animals and Beast Sense to get similar results to what a familiar could accomplish.
>>97154334wait, no, I was wrong. it's vague>2014: A heavily obscured area—such as darkness, opaque fog, or dense foliage—blocks vision entirely. A creature effectively suffers from the blinded condition when trying to see something in that area.>2024: A Heavily Obscured area—such as an area with Darkness, heavy fog, or dense foliage—is opaque. You have the Blinded condition when trying to see something there.it's phrased in such a way that it can read as>You have the Blinded condition when trying to see something THAT IS IN THERE.it's phrased in such a way that it can read as>You have the Blinded condition when trying to see something WHILE YOU ARE IN THERE.
>>97155671I believe it's actually both, given what "opaque" means.
>>97154334>>97155671>>97155765It's always been phrased in a way that makes it seem like the designers intend for it to work one way, but it really doesn't.Even for the 2014 version, where it's explicitly the former, we're still talking about an opaque cloud here. If something inside of a Fog Cloud spell can't be seen at all because the fog is too dense, then logically you can't see something on the opposite side of that fog cloud if it was blocking off a hallway or something. But also conversely, if you're standing in a dark cavern and somebody lights up a candle on the other side of the cavern, you'd be able to see them despite the fact that there's darkness in the way.So you pretty much can't rely on the strict rules, and instead have to rely on common sense. And the common sense is that if you can't see them because of opaque fog, and they can't see you because of opaque fog, then you're both functionally Blinded, and therefore you both get advantage/disadvantage.Personally I prefer just houseruling it so that attacks towards or from creatures within a heavily obscured area have disadvantage, because that way two people knife-fighting in the dark are going to miss more often. But that's mostly my own preference so that a spell like Fog Cloud actually works as a a smokescreen to provide cover or blind someone.
>>97155671The second clause states that if you're trying to see something INSIDE the heavily obscured area, you are blinded (either phrased as "effectively suffering from" or actually having the condition). This is interesting because if something is immune to being blinded, it arguably can't see something in darkness in 5.0 and it arguably can in 5.5 The only part that makes this confusing is the FIRST half, but even that works if you read it correctly and not like a retard (I've literally seen brain damaged retards on reddit argue that you can't see the moon at night, despite nothing in the rules implying or stating that).
How's the 2024 Artificer?Any big changes?
For anyone who ran this in a campaign setting other than Greyhawk, how did you translate the town politics into the new setting? Did you just omit it entirely?
>>97156068massive buffs to the core class, minor tweaks to everything else. Alchemist got a lot of improvements, but is still very underwhelming. The cartographer is the new worst subclass.
>>97155828>This is interesting because if something is immune to being blinded, it arguably can't see something in darkness in 5.0 and it arguably can in 5.5In a lot of cases that's probably a moot point, since most of the monsters immune to being Blinded also have Blindsight/Tremorsense/Truesight, and therefore would be capable of seeing everything anyway.
>>97154235I'm going for Pyromancer as my sorcerer subclass, to play into the 'embracing the infernal fire' motif(my DM already gave me the OK on using it). Alternatively, I think I could have justified going with Divine Soul, but I think pyromancer fits better with the general concept. My bardic subclass is Lore, going with the Travelling Sage/full support motif.

>>97154388>Can't tell if it's 2024 Stealth rules that are retarded or just me, but I'm trying to set up a goblin ambush and it occurred to me: what happens if the goblins successfully stay unnoticed but end up lower in the Initiative order than my party members? I presume that the goblins remain hidden until they attack or are found, but is rolling Initiative without there being an immediate threat going to tip off my players that something is about to happen? Do they just perform whatever action or hold something in anticipation of an attack?they included a "you decide" rule in the DMG to avoid having to write rules that make sense>Combat starts when—and only when—you say it does. Some characters have abilities that trigger on an Initiative roll; you, not the players, decide if and when Initiative is rolled. A high-level Barbarian can't just punch their Paladin friend and roll Initiative to regain expended uses of Rage.
>>97156294*which means you decide that initiative is only rolled after the goblins attack from a hidden position
>>97156225NTA, but I'd say the biggest one is that Spell Storing Item can now include 3rd level spells. Which means an Artillerist can toss out 10 free Fireballs per long rest starting at level 11. That's also part of why Alchemist still isn't as good, since it doesn't have a very good 3rd level spell to store despite being a spell-focused subclass.
My level 1 players are going to attack a goblin camp with a bugbear leader. 2025 version of a bugbear, so they wield a light hammer instead of a morningstar. Can I give them the bugbear weapon as loot without breaking game balance?>Savage Light Hammer>Light, Thrown 20/60>3d4 + STR bludgeoning damageWhich, given its light and thrown properties is very strong. Maybe it should be nerfed >if you're not a bugbear, or large, or have a strength of 20 or greater attack rolls with this weapon have disadvantage. What do you think?
>>97156444doesn't seem like a light hammer if it takes 20 str to use
>>97156444>Light>if you're not a bugbear, or large, or have a strength of 20 or greater attack rolls with this weapon have disadvantage. Why?
>>97156444Even going by the old oversized weapon rules, I'm not really sure why that's printed at 3d4, since it should just be 2d4 for a large weapon. You'd think they also could have just given the Bugbear a 2d6 Javelin if they wanted a Large weapon that could also be thrown that would have similar average damage. To answer your question though, I'd mostly be wary of the precedent it sets in the future, because it means they might expect to use other Large-sized weapons with 3x the standard dice in the future. It might not be the worst thing, since I tend to find melee characters often benefit from magic weapons like Flametongue swords to help them dish out bigger chunks of damage. But I'd just as soon say you should just hand out magic weapons that can have the exact damage bonus you want, instead of having to be wary about including any enemies with big weapons. If you wanted, you could always make the Bugbear's light hammer into a magic weapon of some variety as well. Then it turns into a normal-sized magic weapon when the player's loot it and you can give it whatever effect you think would be fair.
>>97156492>I'm not really sure why that's printed at 3d4, since it should just be 2d4 for a large weapon. They probably just wanted it to sit in with 1d12 and 2d6 weapons.

>>97156492I'll come up with a new effect, "big damage but can't be used" would feel bad to find anyway.>>97156542Maybe they got the idea that a bugbear must weird a hammer-type weapon.Maybe they already had the art done but decided to change the mechanics last minute.
>>97156622>complaints about the old morningstar doing 2d8 being too swingy seriouslyHigh-roll crit and killed our fighter from full HP when we played LMoP, which objectively was kind of funny. The craziest part was that the bard silvery barbsed it and the DM rolled another 20.
>>97156444Just give your hammer bugbear a trait that lets it deal extra damage with hammers, or go full modern design and have the weapon damage divorced from any kind of internal consistency.
>>97156625>"big damage but can't be used" would feel bad to find anyway.Well, it can be used is the thing. There are probably some use-cases where having a one-handed 3d4 weapon is worth the disadvantage. But you also paint yourself into a corner either way, since as the PCs gain levels they'll not only find better Large weapons, but also have higher Strength or ways to turn Large to ignore that disadvantage. I could easily see a Barbarian or Fighter specifically going for the Giant/Rune Knight subclasses specifically to take advantage of bigger weapons. So yes, much safer to just ignore what the statblocks say when dishing out loot.
How much experience with D&D should one have before taking a crack at DMing a whimsical one shot? My DM is retiring and invited me to try for our group. I have some fun ideas and a good narrative sense, but not many sessions or situations under my belt and like 1/5 of Baldurs Gate 3.

I think I'll add this character trait to my rogue: She cannot sleep alone. It's a remnant of when she needed a sleeping pile of other kids to share body heat on the street, or she would freeze to death. She also insist in doing back-to back, not face-to-face, so no snuggling or emotional intimacy though. Also, she keep a knife close-by while doing so.

>>97155449>>97155150I mean, I get what you're saying, but I was referring more to strategies I could use to lure many enemy guards away from a cave or enemy camp to give us a clear path to the target, because fighting our way through is suicide. I mean, strategies like starting a fire to draw their attention, or making noise in the middle of the night so they move away from there, things like that, although I don’t even know if any of those would helpI’d like to find alternatives so I don’t have to rely so much on Minor Illusion or even on magic in general

Is CR14 appropriate for this creature? We're doing normal XP.
>>97160738Damage output is pitiful for CR14
>>97160738Has about 100 hitpoints more than other creatures at that CR. The damage on the actual attacks is also low, although the fact it paralyzes people so easily should mean that it's getting near constant advantage and crits, so it's probably fine in that respect. The damage doesn't really matter though, because the fight is an exercise in annoyance. It's a big bag of hitpoints that grabs you, paralyzes you for starting your turn near it, gives you disadvantage to avoid getting paralyzed while grabbing you, gives you disadvantage to escape being grabbed while grabbing you, and rips your head off if you for whatever reason can't immediately escape being grabbed (such as being paralyzed or having disadvantage).

>>97161312i don't think mind controlling other characters is going to be appreciated at the table
>>97161199Conjure Animals in 2014 is hard to beat. For 2024, Summon Fey would be my pick of the lower-level Summon spells. It has solid damage and the secondary effects are pretty easy to utilize. It's also one of the more widely available ones between classes.Dragon is also worth a mention for having better AC than most, as well as just being able to fly around and make constant AoEs. Only downside is that it's Wizard and Draconic Sorc only.
>>97157404I'm really curious if they're going to release a Greyhawk book outside of the DMG or not.If not, I'd fw a reprint of old adventures.
>>97161199Using 2024 5e: I'd say Giant Insect is the best:Giant Insect [Spider] has an excellent movement lockdown effect:>Web Bolt (Spider Only). Ranged Attack Roll: Bonus equals your spell attack modifier, range 60 ft. Hit: 1d10 + 3 + the spell's level Bludgeoning damage, and the target's Speed is reduced to 0 until the start of the insect's next turn.No save and no way to escape if they get hit. Bludgeoning is a solid damage type as well, since not much resists it. This can easily lock down melee people from approaching and flying creatures. This spell also doesn't have a costly GP component you need to get. However, it's only available to Druids and eventually Bards, and it only lasts 10 Minutes, unlike the other summons that last 1 Hour.Summon Undead is also up there. Ghost can fly and auto Frighten on hit, Skeletal has range, and Putrid can theoretically Paralyze lock a ton of creatures if you're able to set it up consistently. My favorite is Summon Fey. Consistent damage type, teleportation, Flight, Mirthful has a great Charm effect too! The other two aren't as broadly good, but if you fight something without a special sight like Darkvision, Tricksy pops off.Honorable Mention 1: to Summon Celestial [Avenger], which can fly and has a 600 Foot Ranged Attack. I find Giant Insect's lockdown effect to be better than just a big range attack. Though this can kite quite well.Honorable Mention 2: Summon Dragon, getting a Damage Resistance can be clutch. If you can use Nystul's Magic Aura + Planar Binding, you can make an army of Dragons that gives you Resistance to Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, and Poison damage while they're alive.

>>97161940>St. Cuthbert was changed to just CuthbertTo be fair, it was always a bit strange for a god to be identified by a definitionally sub-god title.
>>97161974My reasoning as a DM in my version of Greyhawk is because he's the real world St. Cuthbert of Lindisfarne who was sent from Earth to Oerth by the Biblical God after his death to stand between mortals and chaos in that world. He prefers to keep his title of Saint even after his new status.I like my explanation because I think it really re-contextualizes his dislike of Pholtus. With Pholtus claiming he's the only true god, whereas St. Cuthbert stood before the *actual* true God after his death on Earth. He sees Pholtus as a self-absorbed pretender, but gets along with the other lawful and good gods of Oerth such as Heironeous as they know for a fact they aren't the ultimate light.I know this seems like some CS Lewis bullshit but I don't care. If any of my players complain, St. Cuthbert will mention that his Lord took the form of a lion in another world.
>>97161312Suggestion + Magic Aura + Planar Binding. I see the 'friends' we made along the way indeed!
>>97162070Currently, in my Saltmarsh game, he's under the guise of a fisherman. My players first met him around the cove reef area, he provided weapon provisions for them as this was their first underwater combat session and it came to my attention that I had not properly geared them for such an encounter, the three martials carried a greataxe, longsword, and greatsword. He was also friends with the bronze dragon mentioned in the Coven of Wet Rot adventure. And openly spoke draconic in front of the party, merely giving them hints into his nature.I'll probably bring him back later to explain the Isle of the Abbey Pirate's Path mechanics but in an 'ingame friendly' sort of way.
>>97162070>who was sent from Earth to Oerth by the Biblical GodThe theological quandaries this would raise are just immense. Why would the Abrahamic god be chill with people in other worlds having other gods before him if he still apparently has dominion over those worlds?
>>97162194because christcucks cant help but to inject their bullshit where it doesn't belong
I find it weird how Eberron: Forge of the Artificer tries to convince DMs that every campaign premise, even just "wipe out this one criminal gang in this one city," needs to be a 20-level epic saga.Consider Sharn's Boromar Clan. In 3.5, their leader, Saidan, was a rogue 8. In the 4e adventure "Dead for a Spell," at level 7 (in a 30-level system), the PCs get to kill Saidan in a side encounter only tangentially related to the wider adventure.Back in 2021, I ran an Eberron game. There, at level 5, during a side encounter unrelated to the wider plot arc, I let the PCs wipe out Saidan and his inner circle. The players found it entertaining enough.Forge of the Artificer has other ideas on how fighting Sharn's Boromar Clan should play out. Specifically, it proposes that such should be a 20-level epic saga: https://5e.tools/book.html#efa,4,a%20boromar%20clan%20arc,0Same goes for Daask, another criminal gang. Daask is composed of monsters, but said monsters are not that much stronger than the Boromars. I do not see why "down with Daask" needs to be a 20-level epic saga, either: https://5e.tools/book.html#efa,4,a%20daask%20arc,0Why does the book not just suggest a smaller, more compressed scale for such adventures? It is deeply unrealistic for "wipe out this one criminal gang in this one city" to be a 20-level epic saga.Even if we assume that the characters are actually tackling multiple such arcs concurrently, it seems weird to suggest that a DM should let the PCs vanquish some criminal gang in a city only at tier 4.What makes suggestions like the above stranger is that the exact same book is capable of laying out campaign arcs that more justifiably go up to tier 4, like this one: https://5e.tools/book.html#efa,6,a%20lords%20of%20dust%20arc,0Though even this seems like it could be compressed into a much smaller number of levels.
>>97162799>Levels 17–20. Assuming the characters haven't joined the Boromars, the clan leadership tries to eliminate them. The Boromars can't muster a physical threat to challenge characters of this level, so they wield their political power instead. Under pressure from Boromar leaders, the city council declares the adventurers a threat to Sharn's safety and security. Officials revoke their inquisitive agency's operations permit and ask the characters to leave Sharn.Oh no, the level 20 demigods have been asked to leave the city.
>>97162799Most of that probably has to do with the fact that Eberron was originally written with much lower level scales in mind. Even the loli-pope was just level 18, and even that was inside the Silver Flame's main cathedral.
Apparently they started making vidya for individual classes now. I take it multiclassing will be off the table.
>>97162871It's going to be a singular character's story in an action RPG, not a CRPG like BG3.
>>97162810How did it even reach this point, as opposed to the PCs just completely demolishing the Boromar Clan much earlier, at tier 2 or thereabouts?Same goes for any other criminal gang in any other city.
>>97140444After playing BG3 I realized I've been playing Warlock like a Sorcerer, I had no idea how few spell slots I had. I'm lvl 6.Any way to make a pact of the Tome warlock work, or should I see if my DM will let me switch to pact of the blade?Any tips are appreciated, I don't know how you're supposed to make warlocks work other than playing casting Eldritch blast all the time. This isn't a campaign where short resting all the time will lead to verisimilitude.
>>97163106>Any tips are appreciated, I don't know how you're supposed to make warlocks work other than playing casting Eldritch blast all the timeShort rest so you can spam 3rd level spells>This isn't a campaign where short resting all the time will lead to verisimilitude.Punch your DM in the face.
>>97163106A cantrip should be your go-to spell for most actions* with using your spell slots for situational effects, like when you need to Fireball several enemies at once.*Eldritch Blast augmented with Agonizing Blast is usually the go-to that pretty functionally works like a Fighter with a 1d10 Bow and getting up to 4 shots per cast as you level up
>>97163106play a sorlock
>>97163106If you're not taking frequent short rests and you're not using cantrips predominantly, then you're basically limited to taking the various "cast X spell once per day" invocations to make up for the deficiency of your spell slots.
>>97162799>>97162810>>97163005In the 4e Eberron Campaign Guide's adventure "Mark of Prophecy," level 1 (in a 30-level game) characters stop the Menthis Plateau quarter from collapsing. 5e's level 17-20 hook of Daask planting bombs around the city seems like a joke in comparison.
>>97162799>>97162810>>97163005>>97164310There is a possibility that the campaign arcs in this book are LLM-generated. But just to entertain the idea, I prompted DeepSeek with the following:>Generate a four-act campaign stretching from level 1 to 20 in D&D's Eberron setting. It should take place entirely in Sharn, the City of Towers. The primary antagonist, from level 1 to level 20, should be the Boromar Clan.>The first act should be labeled "Levels 1 to 4." The second act should be labeled "Levels 5 to 10." The third act should be labeled "Levels 11 to 16." The fourth act should be labeled "Levels 17 to 20.">Ensure that the challenges at each level are appropriate for PCs of that level.
>>97164528DeepSeek spat out an outline. The key tier 1 threat was:>a new, highly addictive narcotic called "Dream Mist" (refined Eberron dragonshard dust). They trace the supply to a clandestine processing den in the Cogs, beneath the Boromar's legitimate casino in Middle Tavick's Landing.By tier 2:>The ledger reveals the Clan's ultimate patron: Saidan Boromar, the patriarch, is secretly a vampire and has made a pact with a powerful entity from the Cults of the Dragon Below for immortality and power.By tier 3:>They discover Saidan's pact is with a Daelkyr or an Overlord's powerful servant (like a Rakshasa) trapped beneath Sharn. The Clan is excavating in the deepest Cogs, not for treasure, but to physically tether the city's manifest zone to Syrania to their patron, which would allow it to warp reality over Sharn.By tier 4:>The party must perform a "mythic repair" of Sharn. This involves: 1) Securing the Heart of Syrania, a celestial artifact that stabilizes the manifest zone (located in a hidden chamber in the highest spire). 2) Traveling to the Demiplane of the Patron's Imprisonment to sever the tether at its source. 3) Battling the Heir and the manifesting Entity in a reality-shaking confrontation that spans from the deepest Khyber fissure to the peak of Skyway. So honestly, I would say that an LLM unironically has a better grasp of level progression than this official book.

I could see it being fine to have advantage on checks where the new form is *relevant*, like on Deception checks made if impersonating someone. But universally? Nah. If Jimmy the Human Diplomat has +6 to Persuasion, why would a changeling who has taken the form that looks identical to Jimmy the Human Diplomat have Advantage on that? Changelings' innate skill at social interaction is already reflected in getting two proficiencies in Charisma skills.
>>97154334Per RAW, you have Advantage against the target because they cannot see you. However, you have Disadvantage against the target because you cannot see them. And when you have both Adv and Disadv, you have neither.Consider it this way: if you dropped a smokebomb *and didn't move*, would people have much more trouble hitting you, considering you couldn't dodge because you couldn't see them? Maybe, but it cancels out *enough* for 5e's purposes. What it really lets you do is lose them - i.e. you can Hide when Heavily Obscured, and then they lose track of your position, which will make them miss you more.Batman drops smokebombs and then grapples up to the ceiling - i.e. he Hides.

>>97167347>within six seconds, you can precisely and exactly transfer hundreds of gold coins from one bag to anotherDoubt. And, before you say it, the transfer occurs BEFORE you say the command word, so it isn't a magical function of the item's activation.

Does the "Discount" part of the crafter origin feat apply to the trade goods bought by the storehouse bastion option? It uses your funds to purchase them after all, so this feat could be helpful in increasing your profit margins. This goes into overdrive in an Eberron game, because you can also get the Kundarak Vault bastion option and use your renown with the house to also treat the house itself as another storehouse, essentially triple-dipping in buying and selling potential.
>>97167347>>97167381It's also not even like the ability needs to even function within 6 seconds, if the PC is just going to use it in order to get a component they couldn't buy otherwise because the party has been in the wilderness for weeks. And if the party hasn't been in the wilderness for weeks, then the DM should just let them buy the thing without jumping through hoops or roleplaying a whole shopping session.Though also, if you're making a campaign that's 100% on the frontier and you're worried it's going to be a big problem, then you could also just say that a gemstone of X+ value functions as the component for any given spell. That way you don't have to worry about specific materials, and instead gems can just show up in any given pile of treasure.

>>97157404They deleted half-elves then brought them back as "Khoravar", suddenly dragonmarked aren't and weren't ever race-locked (maybe that would be racist according to WotC), Changelings are OP (want permanent Advantage on all Charisma checks forever?), and put "Eberron campaign" in as prerequisites for basically every single fucking fear or player option in general in the entire book. It's shit.

But I don’t see them as logically using the suggested character levels, and I wouldn’t expect 20th level adventurers to still be working as street-level inquisitives. If you took the same story ideas but tied them to levels 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 I think they’d be fine.

But keep in mind that the campaign they’ll be starting will be mostly Tier 1, beginning at level 3 and going to around level 6. Which full caster would you recommend to this newbie? and why
>>97169728WarlockIt's a Strong, versatile class that can realistically pull off any playstyle desired, offers good rp hooks and room for character customization while still having a good baseline to ensure you're always useful through agonizing blast.Big downside really is that there's lots of options to fuck up through bad invocations and/or spell use
>>97169756I'd second it since you have limited amount of spells, all spells are always maxed, and they're always prepared, so it would be easier to keep track of.
>>97169361>The funny harmless prankster kindCan I have a gothy autumn or winter eladrin instead?

>>97169728I'll third >>97169756 suggesting Warlock, if you count it as one.If not, probably Cleric. No remembering to cast Mage Armor. No reaction spells like Shield. No metamagic or ritual casting from your spellbook. Channel Divinity is a short rest feature, but not as important as Wildshape or Bardic Inspiration. Cleric also has one of the shortest spell lists, with domain spells as a bonus, so there's less worry about them picking terrible spells to prep.

wtf is the point of ready an action if you can't do it before combat starts when like a door is being openedmight as well just remove it completely, it's useless now?
>>97168296>They deleted half-elves then brought them back as "Khoravar"As Eberron's term, not as a common element in the rest of the multiverse.
>>97170137Because if you could do it out of combat literally everybody would be doing it all the time and there's conveniently a mechanic for handling this called "initiative"Ready action is for when you want to do something off turn "I want to shoot someone as they enter my line of sight down this dark hallway" or "when James moves away from the enemies I will cadt fireball here"
>>97140519My fey mindset:Extremely cruel and arbitrary toward mortals because fey are full of life and primes are exceedingly dull and empty, slow and dull witted, primes are to fey what a zombie is to a primeYou can imagine chaining up a zombie to see what it does like they do in 28 days later, the only value it has is its amusement to you and the possibility of learning something about its behaviorPrimes speak slow, move slow, think slow. Every once in a while a remarkable specimen may surprise or amuse you, in which case you’ll want to put it in a cage to show your fey friends and subjects. How would an alien of extreme intelligence and social advancement think of average humans? It would vary somewhat based on personality and temperament but the baseline would be some mix of pity, disdain for plebs, like when you’re 10 years old and you realize the ant is too simple to even know what it’s missing.
>>97169728New players are so much fun if they’re actually into it. I love when people come to the game fresh without decades of reading 3.5 character optimization forums and trying to game the system mechanically and beat the DM. I’ve had new players pick abilities and feats and features based on their roleplay without asking ai for the best optimized combat build, it’s so refreshing.Probably the best part of playing with women honestly.
>>97170315I like to know what the height of character power is and then simply not do that myself, personally
I just finished DMing for the first time, and one of my players is upset with me because I didn't handle him pulling shards of broken glass out of his pocket and throwing it at the enemy from melee range in the middle of combat the way he expected.:^(
>>97170359Trying to improvise an action mid-fight is always going to be a gamble for the player, because they can never be sure how the DM is going to rule it. As long as you didn't require multiple checks (like attacking at disadvantage and then giving the enemy an extra save), then I wouldn't beat yourself up over it. Generally it's a good idea to be generous about such things, since if you're strict, it can result in players not bothering to try to improvise or use the environment in the future. But your players should also understand that if you make broken glass an amazing option, then they're just going to start spamming it.
>>97170359if he is going to be upset at something as small as that it doesn't matter who the DM is or what they decide works and what doesnt
>>97170359Sounds like a cunt. Give him the boot he'll only get worse.
I played DnD with a bunch of frens for the first time in ages and we had a good time, but wtf is up with all the fake reddit drama stories ?I mean there are whole youtube channels dedicated to these fake stories that border on sexual assault or are actual crimes. Is a loud minority of DnD players just a bunch of degenerate drama queens ?
>>97169728just let him play a full caster, worst case he is going to make the combat more interesting for your other players that prolly copied and preplanned ther character from some guide.
>>97170517Generally just fake stories for updootsBut not always. I have booted people from my games for being retards who think my dnd games are their place for political venting during games nonstop or trying to offload personal trauma onto everybody else like dnd is a replacement for a therapist
>>97170537>Worst caseNah worst case is he will do nothing but cast magic missile then quit the game after two sessions because casters are too hard for him
>>97170537>>97170564No, worst case is that every round becomes>I cast a spell!>Alright, which one?>...>Which spell do you cast?>Um...>Where is that on my sheet?>The section that says "spells".>...>This one here.>Um...>...>...>...>I cast Earthbind!>Okay, on who?>...>Um...>I want to cast Earthbind on this guy.>He doesn't fly, you know.>What?>That guy can't fly.>...>You know what Earthbind does, right?>It traps them and keeps them from moving, right?>It keeps them from flying.>...>They can still move, they can't fly.>It doesn't stop them from moving?>No.>I don't want to do that, then.>Um...>...>...>...>I want to cast Hypnotic Pattern.>Okay, where?>...>Um...>...>I want to cast it on that guy.>Centered on him?>...>I want to cast it on him.>It's an AoE spell, you know.>It is?>Yes. 30 foot cube.>Oh.>In fact, you could probably get some of the other guys if you aim it between them.>Um...>...>...>...>Okay, I do that.>What's your save DC?>...>Your save DC?>...>Um...>Should be written near your spells.>Where are my spells?
>>97140444My newest (and probably last) 5.5 book came in, Forge of the Artificer. What a waste of $30, the thing is basically a hardcover leaflet.
>>97170584I'm playing in a campaign with three new players, and yeah, the first couple sessions were like this. They're playing a druid, Ranger, and Paladin.
>>97170584>>97170660Okay… let’s say the new player is motivated to play but doesn’t know much about the game. They’re friends with the GM and ask: >Hey dude, what advice would you give me to make spell selection and understanding what each spell does easier? Like, should I write things down on a piece of paper or something? And if so, what important info should I include? I mean, I know there’s the character sheet, but it feels kind of small. Surely there are better homemade alternatives for tracking my spells, right?what you do as gm?
>>97170584>look, Mom, I posted it again!
>>97169998Actually, my first character was/is* a berserker barbarian. I really liked it a lot, although in the first few sessions I felt a bit overwhelmed by the number of dice *(that campaign isn’t really finished; it’s just on a long hiatus).
Can Yeenognu do anything to flying creatures? Huge+15 foot reach puts anything 35 feet up out of reach, or 45 if he high jumps.
>>97170688Just because it isn't on his stat block doesn't mean you can't have him chuck a boulder 300 feet for like 3x his melee damage but with one attack.
>>97170688>yeenoghu teleports to flyer>legendary action swat away>flyer prone, plummets
>>97170584I’ve had this same conversation with an old player. She insisted on playing a druid but then took 3-5 minutes per turn and never knew what any of her spells did. Made combat absolutely crawl. I don’t play with biological women anymore for a good reason.
>>97170669Personally when I play, I always write down any spells on a spare sheet of paper. Mostly because copying them down in full not only gives a good reference, but it also usually helps you to memorize it because you had to fully read the spell and write it out without any skimming. Failing that, I 100% guarantee that there's a spell-card generator out there for just printing off whichever spells you need. None of that really helps with spell selection, either in the context of the player choosing what spells to prepare from their list, or in knowing when to use each spell in the moment. The former is alleviated by you as the GM recommending them spells, picking out some solid and straightforward ones where the use cases are more blatant. The latter is just experience, and there's not a good way to substitute that.
>>97170811The 14 version had card packs for Arcane, Cleric, Druid, etc., but they haven't gotten around to reprinting them for 24.
>>97170847If a player can't find out how to print spell cards despite having access to the internet, then they are incapable of learning how to play a spellcaster anyway.
>>97170934personally if i can't remember the exact details and wording of my entire spell list then i don't deserve to cast one of my spells let alone all of them
>>97170761>teleports to flyer>falls>ends turn on ground

>>97170688He's a demon lord or whatever, add whatever you want to his statblock if you're concerned your players will do this.
>>97171015>doesn’t know how turn based worksNo games
>>97171339>>97171388I'm more questioning how well constructed or exploitable his stat bock is rules as written or I've missed some aspect of his capabilities. He and Zariel are both in Descent Into Avernus at CR 24 and 26 and the difference in their power and the ability of a well-equipped party to threaten them seems massive.
