Protip: regardless of your occupation, if a customer asks you a simple question, don't respond by doing a deep sigh.

I am reticent to go to the little pack-and-ship in the Walmart parking lot here as the owner gives me serious "Crypt Keeper" vibes. I understand that if I'm just dropping off and not buying anything else from your business that you're not making any money off me, but you don't have to *remind* me of that.

There's a much cozier place about the same distance away that I've started going instead, and they sell all sorts of boxes that, while overpriced, are sometimes exactly what I need.

I'm painting model of large robot and I have dilemma - I can either apply typical modern camo (military green, black/black green and dark brown) or instead paint some elements in bone colors, similar to Cadia theme. He already have blue head and one shoulder since I also imagine him as UN machine (IRL Peacekeeper vehicles are painted white instead). Which option sound better in your opinion?

To the NJ anon who's sending me a present I'm gonna be travelling by the time it arrives so I won't be able to open it until January, I'll post it as soon as I can but it'll be a week after Christmas. Didn't want you to think I got it and ran

Both options sounds good to me, that's all. Only thing that I could list for the camo option over plain is that whole model serve as airbrush training exercise and camo painting is definitely fitting training (painting wavy lines up close).

Anons description and the reality of the photo are quite different.
I think this perfeectly encapsulates how SS here has gotten out of han, anons feel pressured to go out and spend a fairly decent amount of money and anons also feel entitled to receive the same.
Getting a box full of another anons spare bits and a couple abandoned projects that can be finished or redone is perfectly fine, if SS was nothing more than an exchange of spare random bits and such that would be great.

Setting aside any criticism of the quality which is an inherently subjective and arbitrary concern, it's the paint on the card, that's added weight, added thickness, added texture, even sleeved that card is going to stick out in the deck from all the other cards.

>>
>>97152829
The tiny baggy of plastic trimmings from prints, sure okay, but everything else in the referenced photo was fine.
I wouldn't be ecstatic about it, and I don't suggest anyone should be, but to complain about it in the way anon did? That shows a monetary entitlement.
>>
>>97152844
Many anons at the time disagree with your take, you are not the arbiter of what is or is not acceptable. More so since you do not participate
>>
>>97152851
If being a majority opinion meant being right, democracy wouldn't be such a fucking dumpster fire.
This is why I have a problem with the corporatization of it and why I don't participate, it's not about a bonding of family or community anymore, it's a festival of looking gift-horses in the mouth and tut-tutting while getting wet and soifaced over big spenders.
>>
>>97152871

>>
>>97152899
Yes, yes, anyone who disagrees with you is one monolithic bogeyman living in your head. we get it.
>>
>>97152737
Wrong. While its true, my initial thought behind starting the whole thing 10 years ago was just that:
>an exchange of spare random bits and such that would be great.

I did accept the reality of growing up and getting older, and as we all got pretty much 10 years older since back then, prices and income have risen over the years as well, so gifts on average got bigger/more expensive by the years.
Its not ideal, because i still find the idea of exchanging some bits and sprues quite charming, but if people love to make bigger gifts, so be it. Its not like i could stop Anon from sending some huge box of stuff anyway.

But i deliberately keep things very rule-light, because the randomness is what i originally liked about 4chan, and still do. So if you join, you should do it because you like to make a nice gift, not because you love to receive one. It could be a Baneblade and 5 other GW boxes, because your Santa is some crazy richfag, or just some random bits. But if you get mad about the later, remember where we are here.
>>

I will be honest - I signed for secret santa because I wanted to make someone happy and since this might be the last year before I move to "standard" wage for researcher/scientist in my country aka minimal (then again, I thought so at least two times already and each time ended with another few years of good wage so...) but when I took a look at my pile of boxes (only small part of them being minis), I thought that I don't really deserve to receive something in return. But it also means I will be happy for whatever I get.

I don't trust Vallejo after the reformulation, I'd recommend getting AK. I've said this many times here already but a 1:1 mix of their matte(the regular one, not ultra matte) and satin gives a universally good look because it's not completely flat but not glossy enough to look unnatural either.

There is something I don't understand about using airbrush for those small lines and shading up close in general. Numerous sources (like H&S official channel) suggest both thinning paints by 50% (half thinner, half paint) as "starting point" and using somewhere near 2 bar pressure. At the same time, advise to keep trigger pressed for constant air stream and only move trigger back by small degree to control amount of paint released. But when I try that, it's always accompanied by two problems - air blows so much that it essentially move paint around (similar to how water surface would behave when subjected to strong air current) and paint itself either refuse to spray (when I don't pull the trigger far enough) or suddenly blow at full force when I move little back. Tried using that limiter screw on the back to prevent moving too much but still, there were cases where paint would refuse to spray only to suddenly blow large amount.

I'm confused.
>>
>>97159160
>air blows so much that it essentially move paint around
Don't hold your mini so close to the airbrush
>there were cases where paint would refuse to spray only to suddenly blow large amount.
Clean your muzzle
>>
>package dropped off
I hope anon isn't at work or something. I don't want to think about what would happen if it was left out in the open all day.
>>
>>97157248
I don't think it's intentional, but it kinda looks like he has a sand castle on his helmet and I kinda love that?
>>
>>97159160
There are multiple solutions to that. The easiest is probably getting a quick disconnect adapter with air flow control and then just find the sweet spot for you. H&S videos are right, but it also strongly depends on your airbrush, your compressor, and what kind of work you are doing. I generally keep my compressor ~30 PSI, but for small detail, pre/post shading, or weathering, I nearly cut off the air to the airbrush with the adapter. So that it's spraying basically as slowly as it can before the atomization starts to degrade. You can do the same with pressure on your compressor, it's just the adapter is comfier and faster. Otherwise, thin the paint a lot, but not with water.
If you have an airbrush like Infinity, where you can set the limit to your trigger (so it only goes to a certain point), that helps a lot, too.

It takes a bit of tinkering; take something plastic and just start testing different pressures and thinned paints. You'll find that sweet spot pretty soon.
>>
>>97159292
if you're just testing spray patterns why not just use paper?
>>
>>97159387
>if you're just testing spray patterns
That's the thing, it's not just spray patterns.
Also, paper behaves differently than plastic, anon.
>>
>>97159387
You could argue that actual progress comes from doing things instead of training.

>>97159292
Like mentioned, thing with trigger limiter I have is how amount of paint that gets released changes over time during painting process, even if I regularly clean front part with wet brush (use makeup one since it's very soft and thus carry little to no risk to needle itself).
As for pressure and adapter (my model have additional screw under the cup, which I assume limits amount of air), I was also told that with too low pressure paint will start to dry and clog much quicker. I admit I don't understand how these thing works completely yet, hence my questions.
>>
>>97159469
>Like mentioned, thing with trigger limiter I have is how amount of paint that gets released changes over time during painting process
What airbrush do you have?
>my model have additional screw under the cup which I assume limits amount of air
I would be very surprised, but who knows.
>I was also told that with too low pressure paint will start to dry and clog much quicker.
Yeah, it will. But nothing that can't be managed, you just have to clean the needle more often.
>>
>>97159547
By amount I mean it starts to get clogged. And I have local model, polish FA-180A, which is probably based on one of Chinese models so I doubt it would tell you much.
>>
>>97159585
>By amount I mean it starts to get clogged
Try to dilute your paint more (it's not uncommon to go like 1:5+ paint/thinner with a delicate work like that) and play with pressures. If that doesn't work, you should probably look for a different airbrush. Even higher range airbrushes like Infinity usually require very frequent needle cleaning during detail/extremely low pressure work, so you can imagine how badly average chink airbrush copes with it (spoiler: it doesn't, it clogs).
>>
>>97159414
if you're just trying to get a dot that doesn't spiderweb or blow paint around paper is fine
>>
>>97160140
Imo, it's not. Paper behaves very differently from a clean (especially gloss varnished) plastic. Besides, I think anon is trying to get rid of the spiderwebbing in a specific scenario, I assume he can airbrush without it otherwise.

No problem, anon. You should still have another package from your actual match this year that you can wait to open if you still want to.

For context, I meant to send this to anon last year, but it shipping to me got delayed past christmas. Not good since she was supposed to be like the main part of the gift. So I've been hanging onto this for like a year meaning to send it the whole time, but I never go outside so I didn't get around to it until this year because I had to send this year's gift as well.
So Idk if that should go in the 2024 album or this year's.

Just check this and maybe last years pictures for an overview what others sent.

My personal rule is to make it at least one GW-Troop box in value, depending on what Anon put on his wishlist. So around 45-55€ here, then i check my stash/pile of shame if i have something that fits the wishlist, or that i think i want to give away to this Anon, and then i add some christmas related sweets and a card and done.
This years Anon asked for "Anything thats fun to paint", so i got him the Dawn of War boardgame, and added a couple of sprues from Frostgrave boxes.

So guys, I put this question in the /40kg/ thread as well but just fishing for more opinions here.

But my friend is thinking about starting a Raven Guard after his World Eaters and Emperors Children.

If he commits to it, I wanted to make him character model as a present and I was thinking between either a Captain with a jump pack or a Chaplain with a jump pack. As a Drukhari player myself, I don't know how much Raven Guard armies/players care about chaplains with jump packs and I'm sure he will likely have a captain with jump pack.

What do you guys think? Should I go with the chaplain or the captain?
>>
>>97165702
This is WIP, we don't actually play the game, so the choice is obviously the chaplain because he looks cooler.
>>
>>97165702

Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Here's the bad news: unless the creator of the 2018 album walks in here, realizes something is wrong, and sets it up so we can publicly view it (again?), we're not going to be able to see the gallery as it was at the end of 2018/beginning of 2019.

The good news? I have a utility that allows me to pull the content of imgur galleries by gallery ID, and I have harvested all the images from the 2018 gallery. I can reconstruct it, just without all the comments it might have had beneath each picture.

More good news: this trick also worked with the 2019 gallery, which means I can reconstruct it, too, in a similar fashion.

I recommend the stuff used by book binders like Books by Hand or Lineco.

What's a way I can make tiny stones/bricks to do some ground brickwork on a mini base? Could I just use foam? I would foam on a larger model, but I need some bricks that are only a couple of mm a side. I feel like foam is too squishy.

You could use milliput thinned with isopropyl alcohol. Applied with a shitty brush. Doesn't shrink and is sandable. You can keep applying more and smoothen it out for a pretty long time, and even wash it away if you slap on too much.

They are from Meng series of "chibi" tank kits, these were Matilda II's, that now identify as armored sentinals. I'm going to swap the guns, again, for lascannons tho I think

You need to regularly clean like once a week, and I mean a full-on "microfiber and furniture polish every surface in the room and then vacuum" clean, and get an air purifier and run it constantly

I think they ended up being around $6 cdn each. Like I've said they are for practice and learning how to paint before I buy nice kits. I'm not sure I like the camo scheme I used here, so I'm going to try something different on the next ones.

I grew up with like, a normal family in a well functioning household. The idea that there are people who don't dust and vacuum their entire house once a week is nuts to me. I know people who do basic weekly cleaning like once a year at most and treat that bare minimum like it's a spring cleaning.

you all make fun of that poster for using craft paints but then you're here putting elmer's glue on everything and trying to use "green stuff" for a low-shrinkage, gap-filling, sandable adhesive when you can get products made for industrial applications at your local hardware store that's probably even cheaper because you aren't paying a hobby tax.
