Rus Vikings are a bit of an oxymoron if I recall correctly. The term 'Rus' was initially used in a similar way as the 'viking'.

the Rus were a swedish tribe who went viking along the volga river and eventually established themselves there as the ruling class of the slavs, who bear their name today as a result, the writings of ibn fadlan (iirc, might be butchering the name atm) describe a group of these Rus vikingr, which the opening scenes of The 13th Warrior are based upon.

I don't think anywhere but here is going to care about what is essentially a random model from the 80s.
It's only notable because of the Johnny meme, and that meme has become utterly irrelevant and unknown anywhere but here.

AK Interactive has new Acrylic washes in 18ml Dropper bottles on their webstore now. Their deep shade acrylic washes are probably going to get discontinued soon for anyone that uses them and likes them.
Has anybody here used them and is able to comment on their quality?
How are they compared to ArmyPainter washes?

I don't want to accidentally make mustard gas using oils and enamels so I stick with nontoxic acrylic paints.

And if you're here because you want to kill time waiting for an acrylic wash to dry you can also read the book I wrote in the last thread only to notice that this thread was made after posting it.

Hey folks,

I just received a wonderful Secret Santa gift from a friend. When I initially got the box I realized it was from the Monster Hunter World board game, but only an expansion to it. I don't have the base game, but I opened it up to discover a beyond massive sculpt of Kushala Daora for me to paint. You can see what it looks like next to a Terminator I'm working on.

So Kushala Daora's whole design gimmick is that it's covered in metal scales (and it's notorious for knocking hunters down with gusts of wind but that's a whole other thing) which means I have the opportunity to really explore playing with metallic shading. I've worked on numerous minis with metallics, but never had said metallics be nearly the entire color scheme.

You can also see in the attached image what it looks like in-game and how others online have tackled the project. I'm personally thinking of airbrushing a base lof light and dark silver before applying colored washes and then drybrushing vibrancy back up with levels of silver/copper.

However, as this is such a large hunk of plastic and I dread approaching it wrong, I was curious if anyone else here has some solid ideas for how they would go about applying the different levels of metallic tones. Mind you I will also be doing a custom, snow-themed base, so don't think it's going to be sitting on the single chunk of plastic. This will most likely be a project I work on on-and-off over the course of a few months.
>>
>>97186439
if you want slightly different colors of metal, you can try mixing inks into the paint, or airbrushing it over metal.
>>

>>
>>97186439
well I would definitely use an airbrush. I would also try to remove the arms before painting. I still think trying to highlight metal looks like shit so I would try to go from light to dark starting with something like aircraft aluminum or silver and going to dark aluminum or steel and then hitting it with an oil wash.
>>
>>97186617
Order more then?
>>
>>97186439
Yoo nice one. I have a buddy that got that same board game and we were both astonished at the size of the kushala.
He hasn't painted it yet but the approach was going to be the same. Brush evrything dark silver metalic, spot highlight with different metallics, wash and drybrush. Large organic pieces can be surprisinigly leniant especially with an airbrush. Have confidence and let the airbrush go brrrr. He painted his rathalos already I'd share a pic if I had one on hand but it also turned out pretty good for surprisingly easy effort.

>if that is true /wip/ is singlehandedly driving up eBay prices
That's *mostly* true.

Johnny is unusual in that he was only available in blisters or individually via mail order - so he's not "limited edition" or "unreleased" - but because he's absent from the Blue Catalogue circa 1990, completionist collectors might not have ever known they were missing him until he was no longer available from Citadel. I suspect this rarity is also at least partly responsible for the prices.

By contrast, Brother Sheer also only appears in mail order inserts and White Dwarf adverts. However, he was one of the models you got duplicates of if you bought a Rogue Trader-era Tactical Squad. Consequently, while he's not in the Blue Catalogue either, he is nonetheless fairly ubiquitous.

Dearest Californianon,

Your package has been retrieved from the lockbox one street over (it has a remarkably similar name and this neighbor often gets my deliveries). Lotann is exactly the model I hoped to add to my budding Idoneth Deepkin army. I'm sure the candle smells just like the ocean, a scent foreign and unknown to the Sonoran desert. I appreciate the dice and look forward to getting them into the table with my models. I love swedish fish, once upon a time I used them in a fake proposal to my now wife (got down on one knee and pulled out "some red herrings" (I did pop the question later that night)). The chocolate did not survive a Mesa weekend in a mailbox, even in winter, and is now reconstituting in my freezer (not the first time this has happened, don't worry). I always need new hobby supplies as I refuse to buy myself new stuff even when it wears out. Thank you again for your thoughtful gift and Merry Christmas.

If you want to get the army table ready quickly, just do base colours (tallarn flesh or cadian flesh for skin) and then an Amry Painter strong tone wash for everything but the skin and soft tone for skin. You're welcome, anon. And Merry Christmas.
The box was a really fun project, it took a lot of restraint not to post WIPs while making it.
I'm just being really autistic about the electronics safety, I'm SURE it's fine, like 99.999% sure. but there's always a chance a solder joint breaks and sparks and catches the material on fire or something crazy and I'd never forgive myself if it did. I did have it on pretty much the whole time I was making it though without issues. Mostly because I wanted to see how long the batteries lasted, and it's a really long time, but it does get dimmer over time.
It might make a cool upright display case if stood up on the short end. The latches lay flat-ish if you flip the keys around when it's open.
And be warned, if you drop it it will break, much like it did halfway through building it.

Also I hope you don't mind I took one of the necromunda bots, but the sprues for them are the same for either config.

I did take photos and spinnies of the box before sending it just for my own records. I'll throw together a collage of the WIP stuff later.

I decided my Grigio Verde Italians were too blue so I tried to use a similar scheme on a DKoK. My biggest question is how you guys make wood look good? It being so flat scares me away from trying to highlight without really knowing how to go in.

Thank you anon I will buy both of those at the store tomorrow.

His moveset, whack!
His staying in the air for long periods so you cant fight him, whack!
His quick resistance to flash pods, whack!
His habit of flying to small areas to fight, whack!
His tornado aoes that make the area even smaller, whack!
His wind gusts every 3 seconds to knock you over, whack!

Ash the cyber succubus from neko galaxy miniatures. Would recommend, they have some really cool models.

You can get any of the basic stuff off amazon for pretty cheap. Stuff from electronics suppliers is good but more specialized and expensive so it's kind of unnecessary to source from a site like Adafruit (or a digikey type site) just to buy 100 white LEDs until you're doing more advanced projects and need it.
The only issue is it's hard to be selective, so it's easier to buy a box of like 1000 assorted resistors for 15 bucks that will happen to have the ones you need rather than trying to buy the exact ones you need. The basics are the kind of stuff that's only available in bulk really, but none of it's that expensive. I'm sure there are beginner electronics kits that come with some useful stuff and project instructions that are in the 20-50 dollar range, some reusable useful stuff like a battery pack, small breadboard, jumper wires, etc.
If you're just interested in lighting up some LEDs you can take a look at websites like ledcalculator dot net. For basic stuff you'll want some kind of battery/power supply that's ~3-5V (or more, you'll just need bigger resistors and you'll probably pop some LEDs while testing. It happens...), assorted LEDs, assorted resistors, and probably a breadboard. Wire and heatshrink also comes in handy. Like any hobby, it gets easier the more staple stuff you acquire over time but you don't need to start with everything. You'll want to watch some youtube or do some reading on the very basics of electronics or simple LED circuits though. Lots of cosplay type channels would cover LED basics.

Brown is surprisingly friendly with other colors. For wood you can take a green and mix a little your brown into it to bring it closer to the brown and use throat for some highlights. Can also use yellow ochre, darker red and purples, black, grey, orange, etc. Mahogany is one of my favorite browns to use for wood, it leans a little purple so it has some nice depth to it without looking flat. The blue coat looks really nice by the by.
>>
>>97188769
for wood paint the lighter color and then streak the darker grain color using oil paint.

It struck me recently that I've been in the hobby for over 10 years now, and I'm not an oldhead by any stretch of the imagination.
I thought back on how painting styles have come and gone, and how the hobby has evolved during that time.
It's made me realise that there is only one thing that never seems to change: people whinging about airbrushes.

I'm pretty sure that's a legitimate strung-together-out-of-trash kitbash, Anon. Maybe there's a base model somewhere but considering the thighs are dreadnought psycannons, the calves are dreadnought armors, the toes are dreadnought toes and stealthsuit torsos, the biceps are arcrifles from karaphrons etc and ad nausua, that model might just be some mademan's lunacy.

there are also some parts made out of shampoo bottles and things, very classic style of kitbashing/scratchbuilding
I aspire to build like this one day
>>
>>97189022
You can do it, Anon. I believe in you.
>>
>>97188953
you'll get faster as you get better, try to figure out where you can rush and where you need to take your time.
One thing that I noticed when I started getting better was that thinner paints take less time to apply than thicker ones, properly thinned basecoats should slop on like a dream with no effort (or use speedpaints for basecoating).

>>
>>97189057
I bought a few battlefleet gothic magazines off of ebay and the seller sent me an old necromunda magazine in the lot and the scratchbuilding is just something else. Even the BFG magazine had some impressive examples but it definitely feels like a lost practice.
>>
>>97189074
sadly I think 3d printing is what killed this kind of scratchbuilding, it fills the same niche in the hobby so much more efficiently, but loses some of the charm
>>
>>97189081
I think it can still be used to help that hobby. But there is something about proper parts assembly rather than 3d printed minis. There's a youtube channel called Sublight Drive Crafts that makes great old-school style movie prop space ships the old fashioned way.
>>
>>97189081
No it was fading before 3d printers became practical.
I suppose it was just not terribly common for this particular game, most of that stuff is gonna being scale modeling or diorama making rather than gaming. What do I know I just post here.

It's static grass. I've mixed two colours together to give it some variety. First I do sand and PVC, paint it, let it dry, then PVC again, throw it in a plastic container with the static grass and give it a good shake.
Add tufts and other base decoration afterwards.

Use a matt black for the basecoat, then thin highlights (volumetric or edge) of a blue-grey. You want a lot of the basecoat to show through.
If you don't know how to do volumetric or edge highlights, you really just need to practice (just try to use the techniques, even if it starts out looking shit, it will look less shit every time you try it)

Grey primer, light grey drybrush, then if you're feeling adventurous very light white drybrush on the pinnacles. Then an overall black contrast wash. Both citadel and vallejo black contrasts had noticeable tints (green and blue respectively) for me, so I just used black paint + contrast medium to make my own.
>>
>>97185873
At this point its 10, with 2 having provided a legit excuse. I try to follow up with each of them until everything is sorted out.

>>97189469
thanks guys. i never tried contrast but i saw someone drybrush bluish greys and then go over with black contrast, which made me think whether i could prime black, give a heavy zenithal with white can primer followed by blue contrast and then black contrast. would this work?
>>
>>97189014
I ran into some extreme tight space on 3d print mini, hobby knife can't reach it without damaging other parts of the mini
>>
>>97189495
The contrast paints already have a tint in them, the blue contrast is not really necessary. This is a good tutorial on how to do it.

Just black with purely grey highlights looks boring though. Making them bluish improves the look.
>>
>>97189636
damn it's crazy how the bright spots in the profile view are in different places in the 3/4 view. it's almost like it's a 3d object that reflects light depending on its orientation. it's a shame that it's impossible for small objects to have that property.
>>
>>97189621
adding some color variation helps make it look nice. If it's an outside setting blue would be reflected from the sky either way. Painting something with just grey often ends up looking less "shiny". Depends on the finish you are after though.

I used to do without the bases and with subassembly but I found that handling the model causes the paint to rub off and that gluing stuff after painting is risky. Yes, you can manage if you are careful but it's rarely worth the hassle in most cases.
