A better question perhaps is, is it better to multi-class for additional versatility, or dump every single level into a single class so you can gain stronger abilities within its niche?

Even if you start out as single class with them, you'd probably quickly unlock a second class to cover for all the things they don't give you.Of course, if you multiclass, you might not stay that way. There might well be a prestige class that encompasses both of your current classes that you can unlock.
