If my wet palette sponge doesn't absorb water evenly, is that a sign that I should replace it? Every time I soak it there's still spots that are lighter and sometimes even stay a bit hard like a dried out sponge.
It's Army Painter if it matters.
>>
>>97278984
Not hard enough. Looks nice but I'd spread it a little more over the flesh on the arm, just a little glaze of blue to integrate it better.
>>
>>97278984
I'm parsing it as ice from a glance
>>
>>97279025
>It's Army Painter if it matters.
Throw it out. I'm not even memeing, AP's "wet palette" is not even a wet palette in it's true sense, it's a shitty foam with even shittier paper. Get/make yourself an actual wet palette instead. AK (the 3rd gen one, with an orange top) is leagues better and usually roughly the same price, for example.
>>
>>97279058
I've noticed that every other wet palette used in Youtube videos, the paint seems to bead up on the paper. Something that I've never had happen on mine no matter how thin the paint is. What's the difference? I'm guessing most other paper has a wax coating and the AP one doesn't? I bought it because it was the cheapest I could find when I was starting out.
I have so many sponges and paper refills left on it...
>>
>>97279053
Hum...Didnt thought about that, thanks !

>>97279057
I agree, looks kinda like ice from afar.
>>
>>97279082
You actually don't want wax paper but parchment paper. You want some moisture to go through and keep the paint moisturized
>>
>>97278881
Nice. I made it into both of the holiday wip collages.
>>
>>97279082
Don't get me wrong, you can definitely paint with it, but it's not actually even a wet palette. There are two functions of a wet palette: to 1) keep your paint fresh over long painting sessions (overnight and longer, if you store it in the fridge), and 2) to provide a moist environment (while keeping most of the water out) to mix your paints effectively.
Since AP are bunch of boundless faggots, they use the absolute worst bottom of the barrel garbage for everything; their rattle cans and wet palette are a prime example of this. The paper they use is literally the cheapest, shittiest baking paper available, which results in the paper getting soaking wet nearly immediately, not getting moist, but just letting the water through. And, you being unable to get the same effect you depict, the paint is not beading. Worse yet, the paper has a tendency to shed particles into the paint over prolonged sessions, which can result in messy paint jobs.

As another anon said, you want a normal quality parchment paper; it lets SOME moisture through, while giving you an option to mix your paints properly (with them beading). I will once again shill the AK wet palette. It's as cheap as AP, but it actually works. It's also bigger, with an actual lid and not a retarded rubber (which also defeats the purpose, considering storing wet palettes in a fridge) like the AP one.

I fucking hate AP so much. They bait so many new people into buying absolute worst garbage that's borderline scam.
>>

Cheers man.

>>
>>97280242
Buy specific paints you will need for that specific paintjob. If you REALLY have to buy a starter set, then AK 3rd gen basic starter set is good.

As for the rest, Citadel stuff is okay but overrated, Vallejo is also serviceable though a bit redundant for fantasy/scifi mini painting with AK around (there are plenty of nice colors in their historical range though). Only buy AP if there's no alternative, because you will regret that purchase if you decide to stick with the hobby.
>>
>>97280030
Just paint either the left or right half of the mask another color, then the mold line will play into the mask and look intended.
>>
>>97280287
I thought AP is supposed to be decent now
>>
>>97280208
I mentioned it a while ago but no one seemed interested in it. there's tons of useful products and tools out there that people seem to ignore. probably because gw doesn't sell a version of it.
>>
>>97280278
>>97280287
I'm getting some conflicting info
>>
>>97280295
>>97280318
Don't get me wrong, AP is currently serviceable, they came a long way since their utterly abhorrent early days. But it is still overpriced garbage for what it is (a bottom of the barrel cheapest acrylics with god knows what kind of mixture inside, considering the violent reaction with white spirit/oils), with multiple quirks that can and will ruin your day. There's virtually no rational reason to buy AP if you have access to AK or even Vallejo.
>>
>>97280350
Gotcha, thanks for the advice anon
>>
>>97280350
>considering the violent reaction with white spirit/oils
I've seen an anon in 40kg have a spergout over this. Saying it's bullshit and that the metal plate chart that's been floating around has been proven wrong. I don't buy AP so I don't really care but I'm kinda curious what's the truth
>>
>>97279491
>>97280280
Cool stuff, inspiring even. I really like deldar and corsair bashes
I have a fresh kabalite box and a, sadly mostly used up, corsair one, but I might get a third something to mix them together
>>
>>97280411
Funnily enough, I've made that plate chart. And no, as far as I know, it wasn't proven wrong. In fact, I even saw it circulating on plebbit, and not even the AP fanboys there seem to disagree with it. If anything, there were more cases of AP paints dissolving/pulling under white spirit/oils, including plenty of them lately (~6 months range), and a lot of debate about it, too (you can google army painter + white spirit + reddit) Imo, it's a real problem and even redditors, who are traditionally the #1 victim of AP marketing, are noticing.
>>
>>97280411
at equal sperg levels it would me more rational to trust the man that made the plate than another just sperging about it without his own plate, more so when you take into account that the plate anon made it because a discussion was already in progress with several 'other' anons having problems

tldr: >>97280350 >no rational reason to buy AP if you have access to AK or even Vallejo.
>>
>>97280318
Different people like different paints, a lot don't have much preferences either way at all, and we have one guy in particular around here who would apparently get a brain haemorrhage if he didn't sing AK's praise as Pure and Perfect Divinity in a Bottle every time paint is mentioned.
In reality GW, AP, AK, Vallejo... just get whatever has the specific hues you want, the rest is either a matter of specific paints vs specific paints instead of range vs range or too marginal to really matter. So don't think it's a big deal what you get, just get something from one of the common choices and start painting.
>>
>>97280464
>>97280470
Yeah that's what I figured especially since I did look it up on plebbit and there were a couple posts with people bringing up the issue. I'm more inclined to trust /wip/ anyway, especially since anon actually put an effort into testing it.
>>
>>97280486
NTA, but AK seem to be generally the most favored on /wip/.
Otherwise yeah, no reason not to be brand-blind.

i got the vallejo starter set on amazon, it's pretty good. most of the basic colors and a couple of metalics. although I don't know how good it would be for DnD if you're painting a lot of flesh on creatures.

you could look into the Army Painter Speed Paint starter set if you want something really simple.
>>
>>97280666
The highlights are a bit too sharp and heavy handed I feel, it's pretty important to keep things smooth when painting skin of any kind. Then again this happens to be a dude so having sharply defined features is not that jarring in this case. Not bad all things considered but there's room for improvement. Go watch Duncan's video on painting faces, it should help you understand the basics.
>>
>>97280242

seconding the vallejo model color set. I got "basic colors USA" which has an american revolutionary on the front. I bought it to round out my set that already had most of the colours but I haven't even gone back to my old GW and older game color ones. The model colors are really good, really matte, good coverage all over and mix well with consistent consistencies. And the set has pretty much everything I want to mess with. The true metallics aren't great but I don't really mess with them. Maybe if you're a complete beginner you also might want to get some contrast paints or something.

the set won't come with any "washes" or "shades". And as a beginner most of the work should honestly be done by that kind of thing. The paint set will just be basecoats and won't give you any real depth without them. Contrast paints are how a lot of people paint a single color with a single paint but I don't use em much.

I'd hazard that this applies to most people in this general desu. Contrasts are good for new painters, but I rarely see experienced painters use them for anything more than the barest basecoat on specific natural materials.
