how dark and broody and GOTHIC do you like your games?

I love my ST but he knows fuck all about punk, goth, metal, whatever. My character by default has kind of pushed those themes into a regular part of the human elements of our game, but most of the characters in that realm feel like extras out of This Is Spinal Tap.

>how dark and broody and GOTHIC do you like your games?
I am the One who unrolls the horizon.
I stand at the prow of the Boat of Millions of Years.
My voice is the north wind; my heart is the steady stone.
I have come forth from the primeval waters,
And I bring the Gold of the Morning to burn away the mist.

Get back, you Crawler! You who eat shadows!
You with the coiled spine and the lying tongue.
Your clouds cannot swallow the Disk.
Your noise cannot break the Silence.
I know you, Isfet. I know your name.
You are the Uncreated. You are the Empty Throat.
Your sandbanks are severed; your path is unmade.

Behold, the Scales are set!
The Feather of Truth is lifted high, and it is heavier than your mountains of deceit.
The Flint Knife descends!
It cuts the haze. It severs the knot of confusion.
The blood of chaos turns to water; it sinks into the earth and is forgotten.
There is no room for you here.
The Hall of Two Truths is swept clean.

The sky is supported. The earth is stable.
The Nile swells in its proper season.
The stars do not drift from their courses.
What was broken is made whole.
What was jagged is made smooth.
I breathe the air of Order. I drink the water of Righteousness.
Ma’at is satisfied.
Ma’at is satisfied.
Ma’at is satisfied.

The Sun rises, and the Serpent is blind.
It has been spoken, and so it is.

these maps are never any good. Trying to cobble together a coherent territory map with clean borders for a setting with as many different writers as WoD? Impossible. Even if you succeeded by tracking down every tiny little territory claim in every little book, you'd wind up with something that looks like a map of Africa by tribal affiliation. And then nobody would be happy.
>>
>>97324597
if we go by land area then almost all of it should just be Garou territory, vampires (aside from Gangrel and the occasional Tzimisce who still thinks it's the 1200s) live in cities where the blood is (and werewolves aren't)

tbf the local government also has an absurd idea of building a massive (it would put our town in the top 10 largest cities in the country list btw) mixed industrial-residential area where people will live on and in the factories (no I am not making this up) and they have invested a lot in tech education like electricians and such so there is probably a battle going on between Iteration X and the Chorus behind the scenes now that I think about it

Disproportionately large Verbena-affiliated population for its size, though most of them are probably sorcerers rather than mages. If there are any vampires, they're Gangrel, Nosferatu or Malkavian. If there are any werewolves, Fianna or Bone Gnawer. Decent probability of a changeling or two, though I'm not very informed about CtD.

>how dark and broody and GOTHIC do you like your games?
The chronicle I played in was definitely dark and broody. My ST took a lot of inspiration from American Horror Story in that all the paranormal stuff was mostly a backdrop to stories about people being horrible to each other. As for 'gothic', he kinda leaned into various goth sub-types being popular among particular sub-splats. For example, I remember that cyber-goths were often young Technocrats while rivet-heads were often fomori.

Eh, there's better conspiracy fodder from other organized abrahamic religions and the mormons are by in large domesticated nowadays. Sure, they got their start as Islam for WASPs with just a skosh of scientology thrown in for fun, but Uncle Sam brought them to heel by the end of the 19th century. Now they're just another weird Christian offshoot we tolerate because they don't cause much of a ruckus. Nothing about them screams having the wealth of faith or cunning to ward away vampires.

>>97326357
I'm really not sure. This isn't my area of expertise and I don't know why, if this behavior is so abnormal for a PDF, why it wouldn't be flagged by security vendors, and why the worst thing I've seen is a Medium on Mitre. Or why the first MEGA has been here for I genuinely think a decade, and nobody has ever reported it for suspicious files? If such outrageous malware has been sitting here for that long, how come this is the first we're hearing about it?

CTRL-F System32 has more hits for my PDF than the one from the MEGA.

>Gargoyles
>Rooftops and Antennae must look oppressive and be suspiciously taller than real life
>hostile architecture, mixture of gothic and modern despite not really fitting in super well
>not very well lit
>multiple places are rundown or abandoned even more so than in a modern city
You'd probably have to find a place in your city that gives off more vibes like that at night and then base everything around it. The LA sewers suck too but the way WoD makes it lead to caves and catacombs with gothic architecture kind of lets you assume that you don't need to 1-1 it. As long as landmarks exist and you sort of capture a city's soul in a way it shouldn't be a big deal.
>>
>>97327651
Everything is Gotham/The Crow coded. Its dark & gloomy & it rainw. The crime is worse & everywhere. The architecture is full of gargoyles & cold metal & stone. It rains, but it can't rain all the time.

Savage Age takes place post-Impergium but pre-War of Rage, which allows you to play as some of the extinct Fera. The Grondr (Wereboars, dedicated Wyrm exterminators) are especially cool. It's a fairly in-depth (not realism of course) pre-historic setting that allows for very different games than anything WoD ever really touched on in canon. You can of course use it as a jumping off point for a War of Rage game.

FOUND IT!!!

PAGE 63 OF ELYSIUM TALKD ABOUT THAUMATURGES LEARNING & BENEFITING FROM MUMMY HEKAU.

If you read around d the different books pretty much every single one talks about learning Thaum paths or Hekau or Necromancy Paths or whatever as Sorcery & vice versa. In the World of Darkness, all the non-Awakened magic is kind of the same & can be somewhat interchangeable. You still have to do the hard work of translating the particular path into your own splats "paradigm" or whatever you'd like to call it. A vampire can't teach "Path of Mercury" to a Mummy/ Sorcerer but a Mummy/Sorcerer can learn a Hekau/Numina that mimics Path of Mercury if they do the research.

Sorcerers can learn Hekau (Can't remember but even you mentioned it)
Mummies can learn Sorcery (Base Book)
Mummies can learn Blood Magic (Dark Ages Secrets)
Sorcerers can learn Blood Magic (same as above)
Vampires can learn Sorcery (Core/Thaum sourcebooks)
Vampires should have no problem learning hekau, it's all transitive. If anything, an ST can just say it operates on Bane Mummy vibes instead of Amenti. Call it "Blood Amulets/ Alchemy/Rem (Nomenclature)/etc

I wouldn't keep the figure in mine for any game except if you want to be a purist for W5. It makes sense in W5, given that the Nation collapsed and all that. It doesn't make sense in anything before or in settings where you're hunting or dealing with werewolves by the scores per city like Lupines for VtM or in a Hunter game. Granted, the world is quite an overstatement since Garou aren't very present in Asia or Africa, possibly Russia iirc.

Tbf this is something WoD suffers from overall, 100k kine per lick is something that seems reasonable on paper, but quickly doesn't really make sense in terms of establishing near global (I hate KotE) vampiric society while also dealing with in-fighting and Kindred doing whatever the hell they want. How can a prince of a smaller city even call a Blood Hunt with a grand total of 7 kindred in the area? Even further crazy numbers, 250 Vampires per Mage is some insane stuff. You can barely have understandable societies with those low numbers. I'm aware it's more of an "as many as you want" type of setting but it's a bit crazy they thought the numbers added up.

True enough that mage bloodlines aren't a thing, because that's literally impossible under mage metaphysics.
However, there are plenty of static magic bloodline. The WTA shifters themselves are technically a collection of ancient shamanistic magic bloodlines(they'd kill you for saying that though).
>>
>>97332505
Nah nah they're half-spirit half-man, obviously. Sure they have some weird innate sorcerous elements to them and gnosis is arguably something other people might have, but you're a Wyrm-chud if you communicate this to them and clearly are planning to personally rape Gaia behind the O'Tolley's.

My current game has Verbena (players), Ecstatics (also players) and a few Akashic NPCs.
Mage is more fun to play with people who are actually interested in magickal practices, because they're the ones who are more likely to go beyond the stereotype and try to engage with both the tradition and personal paradigms in creative ways.
Good luck finding people like that, though. I was very lucky.

To be fair, ancient magical bloodlines not being a thing was a retcon.
>>
>>97332505
Yeah but the verbanna's entire thing is that they think that all true magic comes from a direct bloodline to the ancient Wyck (who aren't real)
>The Wyck were the first true mages, born of mortal flesh and primal spirit. They were the first ones to reach out with their hands and their wills to shape the world to suit their needs and their wishes. Their power was like nothing we, their descendents of blood and spirit, now possess. For them magic was almost effortless, a part of their very being. They didn’t require tools and rituals to work their wills, making them the equal of the greatest masters our Tradition has ever known — greater even. Some say that the Wyck were not just mages, but gods, that they were the tribes other men worshipped for their power and insight: the Aesir, the Vanir, the Olympians, the Tuatha De Danaan, the Orishas and the other gods and heroes of myth.
>We only know that the Wyck were the first, and that we, the Verbena, are their most direct descendants.
>the Aeduna were the descendants of the Wyck both literally and figuratively. They were the spiritual children of the Wise Ones, inheritors of their
magic, that essence of creation that fired their spirits. They also had the blood of the Wyck in their veins and were the first to understand the passing of power, and other qualities, through bloodlines, from parent to child. They kept the histories of their family lines, tracing their ancestry back to the First One
>The Old Faith also held strongly to ideas of bloodline and inheritance now found among the modern Gardeners of the Tree. They believed that the power of magic came from direct descent from the Aeduna, and therefore the Wyck. Those not of the proper bloodline could not wield the power of magic

they are also the only faction who just does not believe that mass ascension is even possible at all and are only in the ascension war because they need to
>>
>>97332608
>concentrated in cities
This is something that kind of snowballs out of control in things like V5 too with the way elder vampires need to drain like 3 normies bone dry before they get their fix. Though yeah, it is kind of a weird thing.

>Funnily enough, if I remember correctly, someone did the math before, and do to how old Baba Yaga is, her assassin would have been a vampire longer than Absimiliard.
you don't even need to do much math antes are between 10 and 12 thousand years old exception being Set who is consistently said to be 7 thousand even by the setites

baba yaga is also 7 thousand years old and Vasilisa is said to be twice as old meaning s/he is two thousand years older than the first city which... to be fair Vasilisa was also said to have outgrown the very concept of disciplines something which if taken at face value puts her above caine let alone the antediluvians

I'm thinking of running a high level spy crossover with some VtR players. They are focusing on social skills like Dominate and Majesty but don't want to make it too easy for them. I thought of adding a Natasha Romanoff type spy who is secretly working for the government and pretending to be a ghoul while secretly trying to expose the masquerade and eliminate some vampires. She is meant to play double agent while the players don't realize she's a mole.
What would be a good splat to do it? I'm thinking Task Force Valkyrie but I'm not sure if there's a better option specialized on vampire hunting.
And what should her stats be to be a proper challenge to the vampires?
I find the problem being that TFV is too focused on combat and not enough in vampire politics.

It's simultaneously objectively incorrect and a lot closer to the actual truth than most other paradigms. Before the Shattering, humanity was enlightened and divine, with Lilith being one of the greatest among them, but humanity buckled under its own ascendancy and shattered into the myriad unenlightened sleepers of today. Despite this, there are some humans who awaken to their potential and tap into the divinity of mankind, who can all trace their ancestry back to Adam, the first man.

So there were enlightened human progenitors and everyone who wields magic are descended from them, if only because all of humanity were once divine demigods before the Shattering. This divinity is inherent in the human condition rather than being bound to a specific bloodline and that's the only real thing that the Verbena are objectively wrong about. They're much closer to the truth than basically every other tradition.

Yes and you are raped so you get no choice (sex magic)

Fair on the rest, but you can't be willing else it isn't a real would you rather. Assume the sex magic is against your will.

>When trying to determine the state of the world and the current state of affairs for vampires, do you extrapolate from V20, or do you go all the way back to Revised and extrapolate from its metaplot?

Neither. V20 makes very few definitive statements until the abomination known as Beckett's Jyhad Diary, and the Revised Metaplot is godawful. Start to finish shitshow of questionable choices, overpowered yet underwitted OCs being smashed together like action figures while PCs sit in the cuck chair and watch, all building up to an apocalypse that couldn't possibly deliver. Not to say the entire edition of Revised was a waste, but the metaplot? Ick. Cut the whole thing out.

I like to look at official lore as a guideline at best. You obviously need certain things to be going on, but I'll rewrite entire regions of the globe to fit my liking if I want. What I think matters most when updating your VTM to current year is simple, foundational principles. What are Vampires? Broadly? Unliving ageless social predators staving off their darkest predatory instincts and the ennui that comes from their existences. What they need primarily is human blood, and how they usually get it is by hiding in plain sight, and by subverting mortals and their institutions to benefit them. Which led me to a conclusion very contradictory to the sw*des. Things have gotten better for vampires by in large. Your staid, heavyweight elders already managed to survive the fuckin' industrial revolution. Modern information tech is definitely a doozy but to think it would break people who have kept their heads above water when they started out before the printing press? It's a little hubristic. Junk data, low social cohesion, growing distrust in authority figures, these things all benefit the Masquerade immensely. At the same time, in an age where humans find themselves struggling to build meaningful relationships with each other, it becomes even harder for the Kindred. That kind of stuff.

An extremely unstable third world country where the ruling ideology just went up in flames is ripe for extremism.

Werewolves have a different gift entirely to get you horny and willing to fuck, though it isn't an orgy. That's the regular sex magic.

>What is known about the Order of the Bitter Ashes
pretty much what the ashen knight book writes they are the knight order of the collectors that became knights after being thrown out of the middle eat by either the euthanos or true black hand and took the holy grail with them
really like the Path of Chivalry and collecting trinkets
>and what happened to them?
heavily implied that they going to get wiped out by the Knights of the Temple of Solomon because they been allies in the past + they have a prophesy that they are going to meet again and they assume that the knight templars will also remember them foundly as allies, but had major beef with goratrix in france and are soon going to join the newly created order of reason so they are not at all in the mood of entertaining vampires

at least one of their grail knights is however still around in the final nights

>>97334179
True. Ugly bastards are clearly fomor.

What were the Lasombra and Ventrue like in the Dark Ages? Were the Lasombra already as psychopathic as they'd become, or was that a post-Anarch revolt transformation like how the Ventrue would become CEOs?
