Did you ever have to deal with Abominable Intelligence, Silica Animus, Silica Mutus, or some other form of robot that could easily kill you?
>>
The Kill-Team met a Dark Age AI last week. It was actually very personable, if traumatized from having been in hibernation for over eleven millenia after shutting down to not get subverted by what we’re pretty sure was a C’tan.

For the guy in the last thread asking about how GW came up with Hive Cities. I made a post earlier in that thread arguing they were inspired by Judge Dredd's megacities since Rick Priestley got inspiration from both Dredd and other 2000AD comics (Nemesis and Rogue Trooper for example) but I never explained what inspired Megacities.

Hive cities were inspired by arcologies and other sci-fi city concepts yes but the root inspiration for both megacity 1 and hive cities is post war british housing. Prefab towerblocks were/are a strong symbol in the UK for the failed promise of the 1960s planners and the reality of shoddy blocks barely holding up their own weight, social atomisation and general deprivation/crime that set in by the 80s. Turn a towerblock with 300 residents into a megablock with 20,000 or a hive spire with 1 million and you get the idea.

If you want the grimest derpest real example look up the Divis flats. It has all the normal shittiness (i.e a roman catholic family of 14 with no heat living next to a smackhead's shooting den) with the added aspect that it was Belfast in the 70s/80s and Divis was a major locus for sectarian conflict so you also had daily gunfire, IRA men kneecapping people on the ground floor and Fianna (IRA youth organization) throwing rocks at british paratroopers who then shoot them in the head with rubber bullets and give them brain damage (or miss and nail some pensioner with a full powder charge rubber bullet that aren't even supposed to be fired directly at people).

>Be me
>Lord-Captain Jango Danithor Harkonnen Antilles Calrissian
>Coffers are looking a bit sparse, shop around for a way to make a quick buck
>Shifty-looking Magos asks us to investigate an old research outpost, bring back a mcguffin
>No further information, just "You'll know it when you see it"
>Fuck it, pay's good
>Weigh anchor and set sail
>Relatively uneventful warp transit, only a few thousand serfs dead
>Emerge in desolate system with a single world
>Slightly volcanic, no matter, that's what power armor is for
>Scan for the outpost, it's fairly obvious once we know what we're looking for
>Touch down, fight a few lava lizards (didn't know their proper names, didn't much care)
>One dies relatively intact, order it taxidermied
>Proceed into very abandoned, mostly-environmentally sealed bunker
>Still a trickle of power, fight some ancient battle-servitors
>Our cogboy manages to reprogram and reactivate one, sick
>Poke around a bit more, find a terminal to the side of a big ol' gate
>Cogboy fiddles with it, manages to get in
>Generator ramps up
>Lights flicker on
>Gate starts to raise
>REACTOR. ONLINE.

>WEAPONS. ONLINE.
>ALL SYSTEMS NOMINAL.
>Support gantries disengage with a hydraulic hiss
>The ground shakes as it steps forward
>UNREGISTERED LIFESIGNS DETECTED
>ENGAGING LIQUIDATION PROTOCOLS
>Ah, fuck.
>Cue extremely heroic noises amidst a tactically inverted advance, as my bodyguards rush into the danger
>Good lads, I'll give them a raise if they survive
>Executive officers unload fancy and exotic weapons into the hulking metal monstrosity, keeping its attention
>From the doorway, I draw my finest armament - an archaeotech hellpistol, tuned for a marksman
>Draw a bead on it and pray to the Emperor
>Strike true, headshot, righteous fury
>Extra dice come up 10
>Roll again, another 10
>Roll again, 9
>Total damage was somewhere in the mid-50's
>Blow its head clean off

>PRIMARY SENSOR MODULE DESTROYED
>REROUTING TO SECONDARY SYSTEMS
>ENGAGING PYROCLASM CONTINGENCY

>Targeting is less refined, so there's that
>Cogboy reads rapid intensification of its onboard reactor
>A dull red glow emanates from the seams of its armored shell
>Starting to get a lot brighter
>Weaponsfire redoubles, safeties disengaged
>The air itself feels aflame
>Binaric tones screech from the automata's voxbox
>Cogboy, horrified: "It's counting down!"
>Not to worry, dear boy, I know just what to do
>Sprint headlong away from the thing down the nearest tunnel
>Most of the executive crew follow after me
>One of them decides to try to wrestle it instead, for the hell of it
>Wrestle the twenty-foot, yellow-hot death machine that's probably about to detonate
>Godspeed you glorious moron
>Cogboy's keeping a running translation of the countdown
>Three, two, one-
>A thunderous eruption rattles the bunker like the fist of an angry god
>Plasmic flame boils through the tunnel, barely evaded by strategic positioning and a highly convenient crate
>Pick through the cinders to see the aftermath
>The automaton is naught but scrap, its internals slagged and its plating torn asunder
>Check the corpse of the madlad who tried to suplex a mech
>Against all odds, that crazy fucker is barely clinging on to life
>All four limbs are stumps, his skin has sloughed off of him like the world's nastiest gimp suit, and he doesn't have a face anymore
>But he's still kicking
>I've gotta clone this guy, endless legions of roach soldiers are within my grasp

I'm so glad I got into 40k just after Leagues were announced when I started in 3ed I heard Squats and wanted to play them but you know. So I went with Tau instead.

>Standing in a bombed-out research bunker as the craziest nugget I've ever known gets medevac'd

>Cogboy finds a terminal and gets cracking
>Looks like we'll be here a while
>Ship down some jellied pit-scorpion and crackers, plus a fine vintage
>And some less exquisite provender for my comrades
>My fine luncheon is interrupted by the cogboy, seemingly rather agitated
>Won't stop bothering me to come with him
>Can't you see I'm busy here?
>Whatever, take a plate of hors d'oeuvres and a chalice and wander off to find out what the nutjob wants now
>Take a sip as he leans in to whisper in my ear
>Moments later, I spew approximately six thousand menial's yearly wage worth of amasec onto the ground in shock as I register his words
>"Lord-Captain... we appear to have located a Standard Template Construct datafragment."
