Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR-era, Arnesonian & Gygaxian D&D, derived systems, and compatible content.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity (yet do not strictly enforce) to Dungeons & Dragons as played in the game's pre third edition era—less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about. We'll be happy to help you get started on this play style.

"First decade" has been part of the /osrg/ OP uninterruptedly since 2019, for over 750 threads. See picrel.

This is Fishfag troll thread with a modified OP in an attempt to hijack and troll /osrg/

Use another name than /osrg/ if you want to create your new general, fishfag.

This is a fishfag hijack thread. He has also removed "first decade". The real thread with the usual OP is here:

Are there any better tutorial dungeons than Totsk? As somebody that's ran this a few times, it's linearity deeply vexes me. I want something less railroady.
>>97390639
Those documents were deeply flawed outright propaganda pieces that pushed a narrative on what OSR was that runs contradictory to the views of all but a very narrow few. If this thread stays up, i'll hapluly get an actual new player resource like principa apocrypha
>>
>>97390670
youve never actually played D&D before and youve posted this stupid ass map multiple times as though you can fake knowledge.
got any more error riddled character sheets to show instead?

explain what is propagandistic about pic related
it's the most neutral and balanced take i've ever seen in these threads you want to ruin
>>
>>97390699
The document as a whole pushes a skewed, innacurate view of the OSR, was written by someone who's clearly biased towards AD&D/OSRIC to an unhealthy degree, and is also a hitpiece on anything not outside of the authors narrow one true wayism.
Now, would you be able to contribute to the thread? Post some maps or campaign logs perhaps?
>>

Until you learn to make a character sheet nobody is going to take your schizo theories on OSR seriously fishfag.

Recently I have been playing a lot of solo OSR. I've played using various systems, some intended for solo play while others I use emulation tools and a small party off characters to simulate the game. (It's good fun for a winter evening in.)

In my solo games I have created a small gauntlet as a sort of funnel for my characters. They must be able to best a giant rat in combat, bypass a weak dart trap in a treasure chest (full of randomized level 1 treasure,) Kill a single screeching bat, an encounter with two hobgoblins (Which can be killed our coerced,) and either kill or outrun a zombie (Killing it bestows the reward of a +1 Morningstar!). Finally, optionally players can attempt to kill a giant spider (And if they succeed, they gain access to a second randomized treasure trove.)

Oddly enough, when running lone characters through this small gauntlet... Only two characters have managed to survive the whole thing. A fighter and a rogue, and both of them died shortly upon exiting.

If you were to run randomly generated characters through this gauntlet, one at a time, what would be some tips for surviving such a dungeon?

Has anyone actually ran this? I've only really used it as a supplement for isle of dread to take stuff from and add to x1 to expand on it.

>>97390741
lol you literally cant produce even one (1) valid char sheet, youre an actual nogames desperate to pretend hes a yesgames

>>97390781
Why are you begging for discussion instead f talking about what parts youve taken for X1?
>>
>>97390781
I believe I played a session in it back in the 00s. I'll be honest, I can't remember a damn thing about it, but now you're gonna have me go look.

>If you were to run randomly generated characters through this gauntlet, one at a time, what would be some tips for surviving such a dungeon?
Just play even more cautiously than normal.
Also, how does solo OSR work in the context of exploration? Do you randomly generate dungeons? As i don't know how you could run a dungeon module without semi spoiling it by looking at the maps?
>>
>>97390800
I have a couple different methods depending on what I'm running.
If I'm running "First person", then I generate the dungeon as I go then extrapolate and interpret what I generate. Example: "Ah, this whole dungeon I keep getting mushroom related stuff from my tables and oracles, and this room has orcs. What if they're mushroom orcs?!"
Most of the time I run with a module. What I do is, I've trained my brain to be willfully ignorant of the maps and to also not peek. As I move through the map, I read entries one by one. I don't give myself second chances to find hidden or alternative content unless there's a valid reason. "Ah, this time while passing this hall, I have Aldoh the Dwarf with me. I'll give myself one more chance to find that secret passage."
If it is a module or a dungeon I have read before, I also have a "Rat Maze" method. Where I am just playing as an observer, seeing if my character can make it through each portion of the maze. Not necessarily discovering new stuff, but rather seeing if he is strong enough to overcome each challenge or strange new area of the map on his own.

Solo play has become a big part of my life after about 2017, and it's been a good hobby to fall back on. It's not the same as playing with a group. It has it's advantages and disadvantages.

I played it like two decades ago.
It's pretty bland, but i do remember the King Kong was a hardhitting motherfucker.

Yeah thats the hard part, its difficult to not just look at the nap in front kf you and ignore it for me.

>>97390858
This was one of the biggest hurtles to get over when I first started. But after a while I started looking at modules as if they were "Choose your own Adventure" books.

>If you were to run randomly generated characters through this gauntlet, one at a time, what would be some tips for surviving such a dungeon?
If you'd allow it for yourself, purchase dogs or wardogs. The main problem you're going to face early on is action economy, so if you can use dogs to soak up damage and make multiple attacks from your side each turn, that would help. Just be mindful of morale.
