I'm marking this thread as gatto territory
One interesting thing I've noticed is that the number of available images for a CYOA character has little or no effect on how long I spend searching for that character's images. I spend as long on a character with 10 usable images as I do with 5000.In the former case, it's time spent agonizing over how few resources I have to work with and trying to pick the closest to what I need out of my limited choices. In the latter, it's combing through each and every image, even when I found a good image on the first page, because I feel like I owe it to my characters to make sure I'm using the best possible image for the situation.Choice paralysis ends up slowing me down just as much as a lack of choices. In this way, perhaps authoring CYOAs and playing CYOAs are more alike than they are different.
Imagine if this CYOA was over 10 pages. That would be so kino.

>>97507086From what I gather, Exalted Conquest is basically going to be Isekai Dark Overlord but with a ridiculous amount of granularity on the minutia, instead of leaving it to the imagination. I am not sure how possible that is to translate to a CYOA format but there's supposedly going to be a PvP winner-take-all multiplayer so I'm sure it will explode, if it ever releases. I doubt it will ever release.
>>97507638No. Magic is objectively evil. It hates you.
>>97508051Its by EA, its going to be isekai dark overlord but with random shonen references and weird fetish crap. "set your minions menstrual cycle!"
>>97508051>PvP winner-take-all multiplayerThat actually sounds greatWhy did no one mention this?
>>97507638In what sense? Magic is a powerful and rare thing that allows people to do that which is otherwise impossible.Magic also always carries some form of price. There are no free lunches there, you dont get to just "cast fireball" or whatever without doing a proper blood sacrifice or trading some years of your life or some other vague equivalent as dfctated by the supernatural forces at play.
>>97508077So you're saying that I can use all living beings as fuel to become a god...
>>97508051Cityscape Skirmish had PVP winner-take-all multiplayer and nobody ever actually played that mode
>>97507991No one has achieved immortality
>>97508096Yes, possibly. Magic in ASOIAF is vague and poorly understood, even by the few people who are more or less actual wizards. But theres a character who is trying to do a giant blood ritual to either become or awaken an eldrich god of the deeps. Its also worth noting that whether literally or as an element of the narrative lens, magic exists the most the further you get from westeros. Theres a city of dark mages on the other side of the world where you can go learn dark magic. However whether its actually some high fantasy or even just conanesque necropolis/magocracy or just "weird foreign place, stories get embellished by sailors" is unknown.

The Lannister's made allies and the tragedy of summerhall swiftly averted. I can focus on locating those dragon eggs, as well as research the mythology of the long night, as i will remain prince for quite some time.Wanted to be an adventurer originally, but sadly you cannot pick romance, adventure and luck at the same time. Saving the realm from tragedy will have to do.
>>97508101Then it must be sought with even greater effort.
>>97508151Hearts Adrift was the real narrative driven one. Cityscape Skirmish cut out most of the plot and just focused on gameplay and battles.
>>97508067>random shonen referencesThe lifeblood of nu-/cyoag/>weird fetish crapThe assassin vampire's thing for shapeshifting into your woman enemies was kind of off-kilter, but I don't think there was much besides that.>"set your minions menstrual cycle!"I don't remember anything like this. The focus on waifus and breeding with them to start a family did clash with the death theme, but that's just normal sexuality. Now that I think of it, the inclusion of sexuality, the creation of new life, in a CYOA about being an embodiment of death was a bit jarring. My headcanon for the Gifts is that the Father uses them to bait Sons into going all-in on the soul destruction agenda. Most men won't take the leap to annihilate whole planets, but if their waifu harem insists on it, they are exponentially likelier to do it. From a cost-benefit analysis, having their general minions be women that can more easily manipulate their designated demigod makes sense but is nonetheless strange from a thematic perspective.>>97508075A few anons have talked about it. The gist is that every multiplayer anon gets thrown into the same war-torn dimension, and can only gain strength by killing strong targets and conquering lands. Other conquerors give extra benefits. In the end, only one anon can conquer the world and move onto the next. Every other anon must either be subjugated and forfeit their growth potential, or slain. It will be a shitshow because nobody will agree that they would lose, but the arguments will be entertaining to see.>>97508099It did but doesn't have EA's cult of personality or the inherently competitive aspect. >>97508364>>97508376>>97508399The actual answer is Ice magic, since white walkers are shadows created by ice magic, and we know metaphysicaly fire aligned objects one shot them.
>>97508263I appreciate massive CYOAs in the same sense that I do +2,000 piece puzzles. They're fun to commit to for a few weeks, but don't lend themselves as well to a casual investment.
>>97508116> Magic in ASOIAF is vague and poorly understood, even by the few people who are more or less actual wizardsWe haven’t seen an actual capital-w wizard like Saruman from Lord of the Rings (he said Saruman would crush Melisandre and that she’s “just not” a true wizard in comparison; which is funny since she’s possibly the most learned magician in the series so far despite her overall zeal), or Ulrich of Cragganmore from Dragonslayer (the movie that partially inspired A Song of Ice & Fire—the world’s last wizard even reads the future in the flames). Perhaps there was some ancient green seer, or some old ass dragon lord, or an entirely inhuman creature that fit the bill at some point in the past. Maybe there’s a legitimate wizard in Asshai. We haven’t seen them.
>>97508412>since white walkers are shadows created by ice magicWe LITERALLY do not know this. The others being ice zombies was more of a show thing, and in the show theyre weak to dragonglass because they were created using dragonglass as a weapon by the children of the forest. In the books theres reason to believe theyre closer to ice elves (and vulnerable to dragonglass because its fire), but theyre also described by martin (outside the text) as a sort of strange and alien life. Theyre not shadows/ice zombies.
>>97508403The night is one big shadow. It’s meant to be poetic since the light is what shapes a shadow. >>97508412They’re not literally shadows. It’s just this phrase to describe them. They’re ghostly white shadows. Laughter like cracking ice.
>>97508430They are shadow projections and im not referencing the television show in any way.
>>97507767Isn't everyone just gonna buy characteristics instead of advancement In Modern Day? What's the point of restricting immediate advancement?
>>97508429>We haven’t seen an actual capital-w wizard like Saruman from Lord of the RingsNo, but weve seen about as close as the world seems to have. The warlocks of qart and mellisandre are both ancient and knowledgeable mages skilled in their respective crafts and powerful in all manner of occult things. And yet theyre not exactly shown to be "commanding" magic. I hate to make the comparison because its entirely antithetical to how magic works in ASOIAF both narratively and possibly mechanically. But mages in that setting are functionally "people who know how to use machinery"Knowing how to turn on the TV or flip a swirch does not make you the master of electricity, capable of making it do something else. It means you know a specific thing and can do it.
>>97508430George says their culture is practically non existent. George has always implied that the Others (White Walkers) are a sort of mockery of human life/culture. In this way they’re perhaps a mockery of human life. If beautiful. Magic is meant to be this beautiful and colorful thing, if sinister and darkly malicious underneath. It’s possible they are still creations of the children of the forest.
>>97508438So that you can't speedrun the highest positions and then spend 1,000 years sealclubbing with your cult
>>97508429Bloodstone Emperor
>>97508441>The warlocks of qarth and mellisandre are both ancient and knowledgeable mages skilled in their respective crafts and powerful in all manner of occult things. The warlocks are explicitly in a state of utter ruin, by the time of the books. Their leaders (the Undying) are husks. Barely alive. Whether this is because they’re slowly reviving themselves with the return of magic, or because this is naturally the end result of the warlocks (they appear to mirror the hive mind of the weirwoods), is unknown. We don’t know how old they are. Melisandre is fucking ancient, though. We know that. Four-hundred years old. That’s suspiciously around the time the Doom happened. Perhaps she was born in the time calamity struck. The century of blood that followed the Doom.
>>97508448>George says their culture is practically non existentHe literally talked about them as making wonders out of ice. They have shimmering rainbow armor and weld weird weapons that are clearly crafted. >>97508454Mythological figure who might not be real or might have been real but been something else entirely (a boring old corrupt emperor who got overthrown).Same way the Nights King (not Night King) may have just been a commander of the nights watch who essentially became a bandit lord, rather than a weird warlock who married an other.
I've got a quarter-finished Platinum Age build, but I keep getting stuck/frustrated at especially the world part, it seems like a number of odd choices went into that design. Practically all superhero stories take place in what is in most respects just baseline earth, but baseline earth for some reason consumes a net three positive choices. And there are a lot of specifics there that don't make a lot of sense to me, too, it seems to jump around a lot between whether 'positive' means good for the PLAYER or good for the average man. 'Fractured' is bad for the average man because I guess it means more little wars out there (unless, I suppose, you also have 'the long peace'...), even though you either 1) could not get involved in them, or 2) COULD get involved and gain status and power from that influence, which would be, presumably, good for you. But then New World Order is presumably bad because one-world government means you can't easily hop over the border.'Climate catastrophe' versus 'calm biosphere' should NOT be a mandated either-or choice, because 'calm biosphere' is just the absence of a looming climate crisis; it makes sense as taking a negatve or not taking a negative, the absence of a crisis is not itself a separate boon.'Alien invasion' - this is apparently something that happened in the past. Why is it a negative at all? It certainly doesn't make things worse for you, is the mere fact that it made things worse for people while it was happening enough? The 'resources' chain, there's THREE of these! What could the upshot possibly be other than the promise of better technology somewhere in the future, when future technology is already NOT treated any differently, in terms of positive/negative, than the 'stable' current timeline?Other than finding it personally distasteful, is there any actual downside to the 'corporate rule,' since it isn't actually that, it's just "corporations hire supers?"There's more, but I'm out of space. Just bugs me.
>>97508450But you still speedrun, just slightly slower.
>>97508458But thats the thing anon, the warlocks being in their current state doesent change that theyre clearly accomplished magic users (by setting standards) who know their shit (by setting standards).Theyre not two bit charlatans who learned to make a fancy explosion and swindle lords out of their money with phoney entrail readings. Theyre the real deal, as real as it gets in the series. Theyre just also still not super impressive compared to wizards from more powerful settings.
>>97508454He likely never existed. The entire great empire of the dawn thing is meant to be misinterpreted throughout the ages. Just like the irl five emperors and three sovereigns myths. Glorious pre histories that never happened. Or they DID happen, but were a lot different, or a lot worse. The world book points to whatever predated the Valyrians being inhuman and quite monstrous. Fishy. Dragons likely came from the sea originally.
>>97508466Yes, you need to work for your total world dominationThis is a common theme in well written cyoa's
>>97508460I’m just going by his words. He said they don’t have a culture, which was pointed out to conflict with their explicit constructs of ice, which is a form of art, and thus it’s a form of culture. This implies they’re copying humans. It’s a hollow culture. Soulless.
>>97508468The Undying for all we know are just mummified losers who joined in on some collective, anon. Warlocks have delusions of grandeur. We don’t even know whose heart that was. The floating blue heart in the centre of the room. That appears to be what connected the Undying. I wouldn’t say we’ve seen real wizards yet. Perhaps Leyton Hightower is the one we’ve been waiting for. Perhaps not.
>>97508156cummed on this build
Magic is a rickety ladder of ignorance. People are higher or lower. Melisandre fools her onlookers the same way she’s fooling herself about her god — which could be someone abusing a glass candle from afar for all we know.

>>97508469It doesn't really matter if he was a real person or not, the story is their to drop hints that very powerful sorcerery did exist at one point, and we see clues to this everywhere. The fishman stuff is there as window dressing for the iron isles and other far off locations but gets erroneously conflated with the magical cataclysmic that happened to create the shadowlands and gave birth the AA myth.
>>97508441Magic is a living thing in asoiaf, practically. It favoured the Valyrians for thousands of years.
>>97508500You’re repeating Lightbringer nonsense. The black stone was built by something other than human life. There was no glorious pre-history human civilization that rivaled or surpassed Valyria. “And so it was, then. But now? I am less certain. It is said that the glass candles are burning in the house of Urrathon Night-Walker, that have not burned in a hundred years. Ghost grass grows in the Garden of Gehane, phantom tortoises have been seen carrying messages between the windowless houses on Warlock's Way, and all the rats in the city are chewing off their tails. The wife of Mathos Mallarawan, who once mocked a warlock's drab moth-eaten robe, has gone mad and will wear no clothes at all. He had some small skill with powders and wildfire, sufficient to entrance a crowd while his cutpurses did their work. He could walk across hot coals and make burning roses bloom in the air, but he could no more aspire to climb the fiery ladder than a common fisherman could hope to catch a kraken in his nets."Dany looked uneasily at where the ladder had stood. Even the smoke was gone now, and the crowd was breaking up, each man going about his business. In a moment more than a few would find their purses flat and empty. >>97508704> And we know for a fact that she's misinterpreting her visions.Melisandre self proclaimed herself the best “in her order” at reading the fires. Whether this means her specific temple, or the red religion as a whole, is unknown. Considering she’s the *only* red priest at the Wall, where shit actually matters, she might be accurate in her claim. It’s also clear her visions are more so esoteric than most. Her simple readings are phenomenally accurate. She can see threats to her person easily. Right down to the faces and times. Moqorro can also casually determine his immediate safety.
>>97508740> certain poetic symbolic patterns in the world produce certain effects, in a way that's too subtle for humans to understand deeply, but a few experts can make some use of it regardless although at riskThis implies magic won’t sometimes just say “no”, and that’s that. It isn’t some unseen mechanism. It’s very much like a living thing.
Fantasy needs magic in it, but I try to control the magic very strictly. You can have too much magic in fantasy very easily, and then it overwhelms everything and you lose all sense of realism. And I try to keep the magic magical — something mysterious and dark and dangerous, and something never completely understood. I don’t want to go down the route of having magic schools and classes where, if you say these six words, something will reliably happen. Magic doesn’t work that way. Magic is playing with forces you don’t completely understand. And perhaps with beings or deities you don’t completely understand. It should have a sense of peril about it.—George R. R. Martin

Another little annoyance in Platinum Age - 'genetics' as a power source offers, by default, three minor powers in the 'physical powers' section, plus one more in the same section per level of power of the character, so that at the highest normal level you would get SEVEN minor physical powers. The problem is of course that 'minor' powers are aptly named, they kind of suck, and there are only 13 physical powers that even have a minor variant available; if you are also putting your unrestricted, level based picks in the physical category (which has some very important things, like durability and regeneration), then you would almost have to end up picking random, non-thematic junk that happened to be stuck in there, like elasticity or cloning, just to use up the seven. Weirdly, it works better if your most dramatic powerset as a 'genetic' hero is stuff that has nothing to do with that at all, since you then have a reasonable use for all those minor choices.Strongly considering just ignoring that limitation and taking minor powers regardless of category.
>>97513402There are alot of rules and limits that aren't very fun, it has been said
>>97513402don't metafag, your better than that

Why did Sylen drink the creative cool-aid? I had high hopes for him ever since Viz Volaire but his cyoas have been steadily declining ever since. The visual quality is still top tier but the creative side is practically gone, its all franchiseslop and sandbox make-your-shit-because-I-can't came-up-with-anything slop.
>>97513492>don't metafag, your better than thatI agree that I'm better than that, but I wouldn't tend to consider this to be a 'meta' criticism or solution. Though I suppose it depends on how you mean the term. I very much prefer to interpret the rules in the sense that seems to be both intended and thematic, the problem is the (admittedly straightfoward) literal interpretation tends to lead to counter-thematic results. Hence the problem.>>97513495>Don't cheat, just take the option that turns 2 of your minor powers into a major power.I am, but this hardly helps, since, reasonably, merging two section-limited minor powers should result in a major power that is likewise section-limited.

I think it's possible that major-level Biomancy is the absolute worst power available. High entropy and requires a drawback to be taken, in exchange for the ability to remember the genetics of a touched being, so that you could "hypothetically replicate it, with the right resources."Any reasonable competitors? 'Miracles' is also amazingly bad for a super-level power, but at least it doesn't come with a drawback cost.
>>97513575LMAO. Even for the joke I can't take Tok being important in any way seriously.
>>97513598I think that there was an implication of growth for many powersLike the reason the genius powers were so expensive was that it was literally supposed to be able to recreate other powers when given time and resources
>>97513600That's how he gets you. He plays the role of a lolcow clown so well you'll never suspect a thing until its over. He once fucked with the archives so bad that 50% of cyoas almost became lost media because of him.
>>97513601Well, the genius powers are fuzzily described, you can at least interpret them as doing something significant. Biomancy says quite explicitly what it does, and it's simply bad.
>>97513607Oh, I remember. Dark days. He's still too retarded to take seriously. Of course the lonely, degenerate incel is stirring up shit. He's too dumb to behave otherwise.
>>97513608Yes but many of the powers are genetic, including the companions, so you only need to touch certain poeple to be able to spread their bullshit powers to your power cattle and you can then breed said power cattle to refine and combine the powersI don't actually think it's that good, because ruling the world is a scaling in and of itself, but I can see why he was worried about genetic control in a world where genetics can do so much
>>97513629>to be able to spread their bullshit powers to your power cattleMajor-level biomancy doesn't give you the ability to manipulate anyone's biology, it's strictly touch-to-memorize.
>>97513607Is that why none of Tok's slop is on the Allsync?
>>97513643Ah, yeah, that's a pretty big oversight
>>97513650YesDo recall that the reason he did all of this was a hissy fit about how his cyoa's were being labeled "Wrong" (In the same way as the entire rest of the archive)
>>97513654And super-level is also explicitly pretty limited in that regard, all you can do is give up to 3 minor-level powers. You could make a nasty local gang like that, but your goons won't be a meaningful threat to other supers. (Well, unless they're supers who spent their sole superpower on 'miracles.')
>>97513650A blessing in disguise. Newfags aren't attacked by his mediocrity during a stroll through the archives.
>>97513661Or unless you are the only one with actual Super powers or even the only one with Major powers. All this is assuming you are the same level as the world when you can just pick Higher Level 3 times to be the only Armageddon in a world of minor supers. Nta, just wanted to point out that your logic fails when 3 minor powers is above average for the world.
>>97513658What did he even do? Try to DD0S the archive? Stage a false copyright claim? Every time I hear this get mentioned, anons are always vague.>>97513667If this is a blessing, Tok is a curse.

Since the others can be chosen multiple times then that one should be also pickable moltiple times. It's not worth it with those 9 drawbacks but it should be possible.>unless you got really stupid with the fact that 'always on' can theoretically be chosen for powers that make no sense with it.I think that doing that is completely fair and balanced considering the bullshit that sylen put in the rest of the cyoa. When the cyoa is retarded already then playing it like this feels only right.
>>97513798>Since the others can be chosen multiple times then that one should be also pickable moltiple times."The exception proves the rule" is an idiom meaning thata special case (the exception) highlights or confirms the existence of a general principle (the rule). Originating from a Latin legal principle (exceptio probat regulam), it suggests that if an exception to a rule exists, a rule must exist to be broken, reinforcing its general application.
