>>97538423
why would I want a tacticool techmarine except for the fact GW realized releasing a phobos techmarine model would be a waste of everyone's time.

What *I* want to do is grab some Iron Father bits, some Admech castellan bits and make a technoheresy Iron Father that can run you down on the battlefield. And give him missile launchers or something.

The Iron Hands should be the Body Horror chapter for the imperium and it sucks gw would rather have.... marines with fangs or marines that are furries instead of this cyborb guy who is more machine than man without being a dreadnaught. Dreads are cool in every chapter except iron hands where they just seem redundant and white scars where white scars should really have a dreadnaught on wheels.

>silver towers
Looking up the heckin lore for these, these are trannysons daemon engines. GW should release a Lord of Skulls sized lesser Silver Tower for exalted sorcerors to ride around on on the battlefield and use as a mobile platform for spells. And give them the ability to use those robots that TS have in their 30k army, or a 40k upgrade version. And each infernal master should belong to a particular Cult that gives his army bonuses. Then tzeentch would finally not suck maybe.

the imperium is not infallible or omniscient, if the kid manages to escape the cult and hide his small past then he would have a chance

it's a genuine plotline, even if a bit snowflakey because the point of writing marines as being made from kids is so that they don't have personal histories like this.

TQ: Still cooking on them ; but O'Yurei is just a count-as-Farsight for the time being. She leads a splinter of survivors from the 4th Sphere Expansion turned Space Mafia and protection racket.

She and her custom stealth Crisis Battlesuit have been confirmed destroyed on numerous occasions only to reappear in future engagements, from which she gets her title meaning "Grave Walker"; which has filtered into the Low Gothic as "Wight" or "Wightmare".

Her primary armament is a biphasic fusion blade, a theoretical enhancement to the standard melta weapon that also induces a strong motive force, effectively trapping matter in the path of the blade. In addition to causing the blade to behave in a semi-physical fashion-- drastically improving its close-combat capabilities, it also causes it to rip through trapped matter like a subatomic chainsaw from the inside out.

As rogue elements to the Empire go, her and her rowdy band are considered of low importance, based on their size and relative distance from the empire proper, but of some concern is the fact that no records can be found accounting for a commander matching her description assigned to the doomed 4th Sphere expedition.

The Word Bearers trilogy covers that, it's a combination of both.
The Word Bearers see it that Chaos is the one central truth of existence and that to deny that truth is to damn yourself. As such they fully embrace Chaos at face value. They are evil, they know they are evil, but if the truth is that the almighty powers are themselves evil then that means to be evil is to be right, and they refuse to be wrong.

Arch-Aquisitor Hephaeston Vosk was a former Technoarchaeologist of some renown during the Damarel expedition of Fenestrati-XCVIII. When he was asked to take the role of Dominus in the wake of his predecessor's departure from the expedition, he unveiled the abeyant and augmentics he'd uncovered during the Damarel crusade, which he'd been restoring in secrecy. Now he leads the expedition from the front, though the (processing) power may have gone to his head.

Starts as standard Orkz vs Guard warplot, The orkz are being surprisingly well supplied and efficent so the guard are getting steadily crushed. Meanwhile there's an ordos xenos inquisitor running around finding evidence of purstrain genestealers, making them convinced there has to be a cult somewhere. Thier increasingly manic investigations are compromising defenses manned by PDF and hiver gang militias adding to the speed the guard is getting rolled up by the greentide. Then when humans are pushed back to thier last bastions the gretchin on the ork side of the lines to rise up in 3-4 armed revolution. The guard think they have a chance to let them kill each other and wait this out till reinforcements arrive, and then tyranids arrive to eat everyone.

>suggestions regarding the origins of the nids and relations with the silent king (no, they weren't made by him, nor by the ctan, or the old ones)

That guy is right >>97539419
it's def BL authors' fault
because as a setting this was never supposed to sustain deeply thoughtful characters
the chaos gods are fucking clownshoes stupid
so now they have to pretend that those characters they want to hype up actually don't like chaos
because liking chaos in this universe gives very little freedom to be an interesting character. and by that I mean making an interesting khorne berserker who likes what he does is doable but far beyond the skill of BL writers
who are, by and large, morons.

In terms of story line. Are the Necrons really just Saturday morning cartoon villains for the plot or are they more than that? You see Necrons in use for a lot of the more recent cinematics produced but none of them obviously ever speak. So is this peak "modern day jobbing" the necrons are performing? or is there really more to them that just hasn't been explored? I'd like to see them get some interesting moments like Space Marines get but I feel that would never happen.

Phoenex: A hidden offshoot of the Ever-Nemesines. They seek to forge the Eldar race anew by the means of exterminating their own kind, be they Commorragh, Craftworlders, Harlequins, or Exodites. They believe that should the Eldar become extinct, Ynnead will be awakaned and the spiritual malaise of the Eldar lifted forever. They are the most secret of all brotherhoods, for their eagerness to see their brethren slain could see them undone. It is rumored that their philosophy is not limited to Commorragh, and that the Harlequins and even Craftworld leaders may share their goal

Custom leader idea: visarch head on a haemonculi body with extra tentacles, leading dark eldar ynnari.

Well, Cadia has a Necron pylon in it which means that Necrons were there before or shortly after the immaterium became destablized and turned into the warp. It's perfectly reasonable to assume Khorne could be an ascended Krork or Nurgle an ascended Necrontyr. Maybe Tzeench is an ascended Old One himself and devoured the rest of his race. And all three could have stepped foot on what would become Cadia. Maybe even the Eldar that would one day reincarnate into Slaanesh as well.

Honestly the Necrons don't really fit the bill for any of those and are kind of a different "ancient evil returned to scour the galaxy" threat closer to Tyranids than Eldar.

The entire reason why those mysteries exist is so you can come up with your own headcanon reason.
Giving everything an explanation just diminishes the mystery and it also makes everything a lot more boring.

Your own mind is much better at coming up with cool scenarios than GW can ever do.
It's the same effect as how they use the fear of the unknown in horror movies, your own mind will always create much more horrific and worse things than any costume maker can.
The mysteries in 40k are the same.

Because Guilliman is a good states man and set it up to be as "robust" as possible 10 000 years ago.

Also it's one of the better places within the Imperium purely because Ultramarines are in charge. And have managed to keep it in working order.
You should never forget, but for as much space marines are the defenders of humanity, they are also humanity's full time tard wranglers as well.
There has been numerous times Imperium has fallen into retarded, useless bickering because regular humans have their egos unchecked which leads to them having a need to swing their dick around constantly, and are more interested in dominating and one-upping their rivals than actually running the fucking empire.
And only reason why those things got ever solved was because space marines came in uninvited and told everyone to fuck off and stop acting like morons.

For example the aftermath of the Beheading incident where all of the High Lords were assassinated by Draken Vangorich, which lead to retarded amounts of political bickering about who should be the successors of the High Lords, which lead to nothing getting done.
So then Agnathio, then chapter of the Ultramarines united with other 50 space marine chapter masters, arrived on Terra and told everyone to get their shit together or else.
The chapter masters and imperial senate got together and held a the closed council within the imperial senate, and after that yet again there were 12 High Lords of Terra.

How lethal is being in the imperial guard? I never understood how anyone ever ascends ranks if their casualty rate is supposedly so high. So if you are a Lt. or Sergeant or something, did you get the rank because you ascended to it in the imperial guard OR did you get it because the guy above you died and the guy about that guy died? How are they getting anything done if all these people are supposedly dying?
>>
>>97540287
Enlightened post. The new one is cool, it's just people want cleaner robot aesthetics from the defiler and something that looks way less chaotic and people can just make that or use the old one. You don't go from Sergeant to Lieutenant. Sergeants are non-commissioned officers, Lieutenants are commissioned officers. Recruits earn their way to being a Sergeant, officers start as a Lieutenant after leaving the officer's academy.

The guard stomps the vast majority of its conflicts and spends a lot of time punching downwards. Even with high casualty rates people are still surviving, especially once you start climbing the command ladder and get moved out of the direct line of fire and into command roles. The guard conflicts we see in stories are the ones that are interesting, which means the ones where the guard is heavily outclassed and take massive casualties. In the current timeline considering everything is burning to the ground its probably getting worse in general.

Also most high ranking officers outside of the special main character regiments have hereditary appointments instead of meritocracy.

The generals are from the schola progenium like the sisters of battle and the stormtroopers/"tempest scions". They are from rich families bred for military strategy, in theory.

is the correct way to go for building a warhammer army just the "rule of cool"? should i just go with what appeals to me instead of any rules or how they play?

i like chaos. i like death marines. i like melee more than ranged. I like fabius and the idea of "random traitor legions fighting with a flimsy alliance" theme. I'm also familiar with huron blackheart but don't think I'll start building an army for him. my favorite 30k legions are iron warriors and word bearers, neither have a specific codex, and i can just paint some guys like that and jam them into a mishmash of a chaos army, like fabius' consortium
can i also repaint my "royalist" space marines? i was gifted 3 flamethrower guys, and also have 7 men angels of death killteam team - i was thinking i was just going to paint them like iron warriors - they're not one to have much chaos mutations anyways.
or alpha legion. I just really enjoy the paint scheme of (main color) + black + gold + silver>>97540446

They are relics from a bygone era that nobody remembers.
Also many of DAoT AI more content just hiding in plain sight and not drawing any attention to themselves. Speranza spends of its time inert and doesn't present anything out of the usual, and the reason why it helped the humans was purely because the leading Magos asked politely and even then Speranza's attitude was "Fine... I'll help you this once."

Other one is Kron, a "voidsman" from the Ancient History short story by Andy Chambers.
Kron is an older man that has cybernetics and his younger crewman Nathan estimates him to be like 300 years old because of said cybernetics and the weird effects of warp travel.
He and Nathan later get attacked by an electropriest which renders Kron unconscious for sometime but they escape, when Kron wakes up he suddenly screams about taking "it" off him before "it" "crash starts".
Later the ship is boarded and they get attacked by a chaos marine and Kron seemes to die but then somehow attacks the marine by shooting lightining from his hands killing the marine, while showing no injuries himself.
Nathan asks before passing out if he's an electropriest too, and he responds "This is categorically not so." after few hours Nathan wakes up again with Kron having built him a new bionic eye that had perfect vision and Kron reportedly said he built from the random shit around them in matter of hours.

You can probably guess, but Kron is clearly meant to be a man of stone or other DAoT AI construct that has just hides within plain sight and is just content in working for the Imperium on navy ships.

Well its not just "rule of cool" but the thing is the time it takes to collect, build, and paint an army, is enough time for GW to upturn the rules with the balance dataslate every few months so if you plan to far in advance with the intention to be competitive you will just be disappointed.

So instead first you collect your army's staples, then get something you like or looks cool, then when you get close to 2k that's when you look at what's actually viable in the present meta that you can put together before a rules change(if competition is what matters to you that is, plenty of hobbyists are content going "rule of cool" from beginning to end)

Kind of yes but also kind of no. The belly is too central, too flat (not 100% flat obv but too flat), and jokes aside I really do think of a crop top when I look at it. The armour option they put in the build mostly fixes that complaint. The flesh needs to be woven into the machine in interesting ways, not slapped in a big flat patch right in the middle. It's too uncanny.

Kastellan don't. They work on data cards the datasmith swaps to program them with a new, predetermined combat protocol. Also, daemon engines derive their thinking from the daemon(s) that are bound into the machine. There's no need for flesh, just like a sword doesn't need flesh to be possessed.

Got another game in today against my buddy's ultramarines. 1000 points on both sides, nothing crazy. Basically my second game with Votann post-codex. I'm not gonna post too many pictures of it, long and short of it is I ended up losing again, but this time by a much slimmer margin than my first go-around with the army as I'm learning them.
Key takeaways from the game for me are: a lot of the infantry squads Votann can take like beserks, hearthguard, etc. are all kinda mediocre unless you take a max sized squad of them. 5 beserks just ain't cutting it. Also, Needgard as a detachment is kinda ass. Gonna swap to hearthband going forward. Also also, I placed my hearthguard in from deepstrike in an absolutely retarded position and got swarmed for my trouble, so there's that. All stuff to take into account for next time, I suppose.
>>
>>97540945
Not too worried about minis. I'm good on that front. How's the codex supplement? Is the Emperor's Champion viable to run? Not asking if he's good in a competitive sense mind you, just good enough to bring to a game without him feeling bad. Honestly that's the most important thing to me.

Point is that you don't need flesh to bind a daemon to. Give the sword legs and an engine to power them, and the daemon will do the rest. Just like Thousand Sons are just empty power armour possessed by their souls, no flesh involved. When you read descriptions of old daemon engines, they're just a fusion of magic and technology. No mention of flesh.

They absolutely are. I don't have any photos of them in action this game but I did take a 3 man squad of the volkite jacks and a memnyr to lead them. They're surprisingly durable - between void armor, cover and their natural 2+ armor save the three of them tanked 3 straight turns of salvos of shooting from a ballistus dread and I think a gladiator lancer? Whichever primaris tank has enough guns to have its own dedicated 5 minute shooting phase. Only picture I have of them this game is of my poor memnyr strategist, alone, jackless, pondering the absurdity of fleshly life from atop his perch as the battle rages on below him.

Helmet is the old CSM Iron Warriors upgrade kit one (bought a bunch back when GW sold bits). The sword might be from some old Chaos Warrior or Marine kit. The design is very similar, but cannot place the exact bit off the top of my head. The power fist looks like the old plastic CSM power fist.

There is no proper canon. Also would depend on the regiment.
Abnetts guard novels present the best I think, the guard mostly fights peer or near peer enemies, wars are long and not just running at a meat grinder 24/7. Certain formations exist where they do mass suicidal shit but competent regiments act in a more or less realistic way.

Pretty much every army I got so far is an existing army in-game (Salamanders, World Eaters, etc), I want to have at least one army that I can call /mydudes/ and I feel Orks is the best fit for that. Here's what I got so far

>Clan is lead by a Deff Dread who was originally the warboss of his Clan, but he krumped so hard fighting some Marines that he had to be put into a Deff Dread to survive (Don't know if I want to either run as a plain dread or kitbash one and run it as Ghazghkull Thrakka in game)
>Clan is all about the big guns and shootin, so probably gonna go with either Dread Mob or More Dakka as the detachment (Not that it'll matter much considering 11th is approaching)
>Would want the army to be filled with Boyz, Lootaz, Meganobz, Killa Kans, basically anything with some kinda shoota strapped to it

Can't for the life of me think of how to paint them up though. My gut tells me to lean towards Goffs because how iconic the black and white checkerboard pattern is and it might be a fun challenge to paint, but I can't think of a way to change it up. Black and Silver?
