Would applying a base coat of chrome and then speed paint on top give a desirable metal finish to mechs?
>>97547206Looks like it starts on page 98
>>97546520You misunderstand, we aren't happy about it. It is, however, the current state of IlClan lore, which is generally not very good.
>>97547230You need a lacquer, not a glorified wash, to get a good candy coat.

>>97546897Very good edition
>>97546265>Gothic was a flopNice gaslighting>liked to see more?Sure, but CGL effectively managed my expectations by calling it one-and-done from the startThe Gothic edition of Shrapnel and especially the Abomination box are delicious icing on this case>it diedMore gaslighting, just for one thing the Abomination boxes have not even come out yet >its failureI couldn’t roll my eyes any harder at this attempted manipulation
>>97547230This anon>>97547245isn't necessarily wrong; but more instructively: a good metal finish will rely on having a smooth clear and shiny topcoat as well. You will be looking at layers like this:1. Black Primer, as smooth and dark as you can get2. Chrome, as smooth and clean as you can get3. Clearcoat (optional), you guessed it, smooth and clean4. Speedpaint, be careful to avoid pooling and try to make sure it only accumulates in recesses5. Clearcoat (mandatory), say it with me, as smooth and clean as you can get it
>>97548070
>>97548101This is the worst advice Ive ever heard, priming black is for beginners who dont know how to basecoat.
>>97548142It helps you perform blacklining.Obviously you don't prime black if your minis is primarily a bright color like yellow, orange, or white. But otherwise it saves a lot of time. Go read any of the Citadel painting guides.
>>97546520CGL did not like the religious connection I guess. To this day some people will not say 'Jihad Era'.

Am I correct that there is an updated rulebook releasing soon so buying a hard copy now isn't worth it?
I have never played Battletech and don't know much about it. My dad recently mentioned he played it back on the 90s and loved it. I noticed there are several different starter boxes, which one is the best I should get to play with my dad? Thanks for all answer, pic unrel
The ROS should have built a 60 Ton Drone Mech at some point. Mainly I'm thinking it should have a C3 Master System
>>97549147Yes. The new core boom will basically be a replacement for the Battlemech Manual and will include full rules for mechs plus Asset rules for other unit types. Allegedly it's gonna hit at gencon but i think that's wildly optimistic and holiday season of this year seems more likely, if not 27. This book will be followed by another book with full rules for vehicles and other unit types, but that'll be later. Probably a year or more after.
>>97549158The one called "A Game Of Armored Combat" is the best starter. It has 8 mechs, mapsheets, and a rulebook. The rules are the same ones your dad remembers from the 90s with only very tiny tweaks. And 8 mechs is perfect since a standard match is 4v4. He might talk about the Clans. They're covered by the Clan Invasion box set, which is meant as an add on to the first box.
>>97549158BattleTech: A Game of Armored Combat 40th anniversary edition box it's your best option
>>97549147>soonI mean playtesting closed recently so>>97549158To play Classic BattleTech (the one that use paper maps with HexGrids), you have three good options:>BattleTech Essentials>Beginner BoxThese retail at 25USD and come with two plastic minis each. There’s not a huge amount of difference between them, so you could just pick based on which of the included minis you like more.>A Game of Armored CombatThis is the ‘proper’ starter set with 8 plastic minis (CBT is often played ‘lance versus lance’ meaning two teams of 4 mechs each). Retail on this is 60USD but you could play for the rest of your life with just this box.
>>97549158The Game of Armored Combat is the starter box for the proper game (don't bother with the Beginner Box that comes with 2 mechs, that only has extremely simplified rules). It comes with almost full rules for playing with mechs with succession wars tech level (they cut some extremely niche rules for space, but nothing that would really matter in a normal game) and enough mechs for 2 4-mech lances, which is the size of forces most people play with.
>>97549188>the Clan Invasion box setFYI this is now OOP
>>97549015>browse thread after gym>delusional schizoid screeching about me when I havnt posted in days>puy name on to tell schizoid he's barking at phantomsYou have issues that need seeing too. Look for help elsewhere.>>97549147Yes, with rules updates that should actually be really good. I am tentatively hopeful as all the changes shown so far have been ones the community has been asking for for decades and should be a major improvement.
>>97549216Not yet. Getting retired soonish but still found on shelves easily enough
>>97549227Didn't you say you weren't an attention whore like bottom is a little while ago?
>>97549231What I mean is, Catalyst is no longer printing the Clan Invasion box. So what’s in circulation right now is all that’s left.
>>97549234Just because you constantly obsess about someone doesn’t make them an attention whore
>>97549234Yee. Which is why I largely don't post with a name anymore. Just wanted to let the schizo ken he was speaking to someone else. Its kind of weird to find that you live rent free in someone's head.
>>97549216The clan invasion box will be replaced with a minis force pack and rules included in a new book because is kinda older than core box though
>>97549251I mean, it's pretty attention whorey to put a name (back) on just to try and make it look like you may or may not be the same person to someone else. It'd be better just to ignore things since they're just words on a screen rather than engage. But to each their own, I suppose.
So right now is total warfare the most comprehensive rulebook available?
>>97548501That crab is fuuuuuuucked.
>>97549256Right, but no eta on the Clan Invasion Forcepack and it will not really replace the box set (no map sheet or Elementals). Really a shame to lose that box because it pairs so perfectly with AGoAC for new players.
>>97549276Total warfare is the book that will be replaced with new one
What's wrong with the Clan Invasion box, why are the removing/replacing it?
>>97549307Because CGL are dumb
>>97549307No exact details, but I suspect they figure everyone who wants it has gotten it. We're getting a Star pack with the 5 mechs, so they'll be cheaper, and since all the rules are getting moved to the new core book, the only thing that won't be available is the mapsheets, which I suspect will show up somewhere else
>>97549307No ilClan-era record sheets, rules, and ilClan era primer, this was added in the 40th anniversary core box, plus 3 of the 5 clan mechs are available in other products (2 in alpha strike and 1 in some force pack) since years ago
>>97549294fuck. oh well it seems to be sold out everywhere anyway
I'm thinking of using the Terraforming Mars 3D tiles and map for a campaign map. Hexes are slightly bigger than BT ones. I figure this will be easier than other shit. Anyone done something similar? The 3D tiles are free, a gift from a friend with too much oil-rig job money and a wife who has decided a baby would make better decorations thsn a hundred and sixty mostly unplayed board games, so cost isn't a factor.
>>97548501Then don't be afraid to hurl some paint at him, eh?
>>97549392I have. Here's the rules I made for my map campaign: https://victorypointproductions.neocities.org/PDFs/Rules.pdf
>>97549400>Then don't be afraid to hurl some paint at him, eh?Pretty sure he's Comstar/Word of Blake...
>>97549495More grey, less white.Just like doing a good black in that regard, you've got to use off-tones to define the color without making it loo like flat primer.
>>97549158A Game of Armored Combat is where you should start. Grab a few extra sets of dice in a few different colors and you’re good to go.
>>97548398>Clanners are assholesCorrect>Word of Blake and pre-schism Comstar are dicksCorrect but also post-schim Comstar are dicks>and everyone else are pussiesCorrect but debatable, the great houses growed a pair, nuked smoke jaguar and the only reason that other clans didn't get the same fate is because Fasa and writers chickened out, same thing applies to let Comstar/Word of Blake alive for a long time until recently (and basically use Seafox as proxy now)
>>97549548>nuked smoke jaguarCome on, man. Read the lore.
Since BT ships dosnt have artificial gravity aside from spinney bits, why are all crew quarters in official art normal looking? When not planetary, they would be floating. around so need to strap themselves to their beds and not just leave things floating around. How do they transport the mechs and all the parts / equipment around in a leopard if it would be floaty?
>>97549582Not my fault that CLG decided to revive Smoke Jaguar to basically recreate 3050 base setting for Alpha Strike on ilclan era
>>97549607Acceleration forces everything to the back. Accelerating at precisely the right speed forces everything to the back with the same amount of force as 1g.
>>97549607All compartments in BattleTech space craft can reorient themselves as necessary to utilize acceleration as gravity.
>>97549158Start with downloading pdfs of the rules and using tokens to play, dont buy anything until youve got some games in and know you'll stick with it.Unless you just like painting tiny robots, in which case the quality of the CGL models is low, reccommend 3D prints which are crisp and sharply detailed.
>>97549548Oh look its made up grog rumors as fact. Neat.
>>97549607Spheroid Dropships are built like squat towers, with "up" oriented along the direction of thrust so that while under acceleration you benefit fron that gravity. Aerodyne dropships have two thrusters - a set at the back for atmospheric maneuvers which allows them to take off from a runway, and a set of "belly" thrusters underneath that's used for space flight and allows them to use thrust gravity while transiting between planet and jump point.
>>97549623That's not true, they just use belly drives in space rather than rear ones. Except for that one shitty infantry assault dropship where everything has to rotate and the corridors become ladderwells.
CuckstarWord of Blacked
>>97549623I could maybe see that on the union, being the lovable murder delivery ball it is. But you cannot tell me a leopard has the space for that.
>>97549654The Leopard's belly drive means that while in space, "up" is the same as on the ground. If you're docked with a JumpShip while it's charging, you just have to deal with being in free fall until you disconnect.
>>97549637>>97549622so when connected to a jumpship its zero g unless matched to the jumpships acceleration and facing the same way?Sorry to be a pest, im trying to map out a jumpship and how they connect and everything.
>>97549666Yep. And notably, jumpships only have weak station keeping drives that aren't enough to produce noteworthy acceleration. Jumpship crews live in microgravity long term.
>>97549670Jumpships usually have spinning grav decks where everyone hangs out, including docked dropship crews if they aren't going anywhere soon.
>>97549666>>97549670But this is also why Jumpships will have Centrifugal Decks to allow Crew and Passengers a place to work out.
How long does the acceleration gravity last?I dont have the maths but you cannot keep accelerating forever.
>>97549713Deceleration does the same thing, you just flip over first. You can accelerate for as long as your fuel reserves hold out, the hard limit on acceleration is too high to matter in practical terms. You'll be shooting out into the empty space between star systems, then run out of fuel long before you reach the speed limit.
>>97549548Post-schism Comstar are cucks especially when they became Victor-Steiner Davion's codpiece.
>>97549729>you just flip over first. >Just roll over and accurate in the other direction. How in the fuck did I not think of that.Thank you good anons.
>>97549640>>97549662It's always kind of silly to me that aerodyne DropShips in space will be flying at a 90 degree angle. I mean, it makes sense since that way you can keep the same orientation of decks as when landed on a planet, but I can't imagine it not looking kind of goofy.
>>97549932Being in space means that aerodynamics just don't matter.
>>97549748This is also crucial because you need to match velocities with your destination (either a jumpship or planet) and thus need to shed the velocity you built up accelerating towards it. The math for a zero/zero intercept is pretty fundamental to space flight and boils down to "spend half the trip accelerating towards the target, then half accelerating away so you don't zoom past it at a very high relative velocity"Theoretically you don't have to thrust the whole time and could even spend nearly all your time coasting after an initial kick, then flip around when you get there and just cancel out the initial kick. This saves fuel but makes you spend a massive amount of time drifting in free fall. The more time you spend thrusting and the higher your thrust is, the lower your travel time.
Do various ships exchange cargo when docked and in zero G then? Or do they land somewhere first?I imagine it must be a pain to lock down entire mechs and mecybay equipment, parts, ect when you dock with a jumpship. Transporting them even more so. Suppose robotic arms would help with a good bit.
>>97549948Mechs are stored in harnesses that support their weight when under gravity or accel so you can work on load bearing parts. These hold the mechs down when not under thrust too. Transferring cargo in microgravity is a hassle but can be done. You'll want people who are experienced in EVA work. It's definitely doable to, say, transfer a mech from one dropship's open bay to another while both are in free fall, but it's not easy.
>>97549948All docking collars are compatible, so you can connect any ship to any other ship (or space station) to transfer cargo or whatever. Landing and putting all the cargo in a warehouse for the next ship to pick up is an option, and also often why raiders looking to steal stuff land on planets in the first place.
More playtesting an Alpha Strike mod for infantry skirmishing. Needs a good deal more work. But quite fun to see Liao Regulars kick Clan Wolf’s butt.
>>97549935I know, but it just looks weird imagining them flying like this next to ASFs and WarShips that have a more conventional orientation.
All this low gravity logistical talk got me thinking about how rare it is to see.I think earlier gundam had some, but they gave every suit a full EVA pack eventually so its not so common.
>>97549998technically warships dont either. Most at least give the appearance of naval inspiration, but they would function like 'towers' aswell no?Baring internal spin bits of course. So the prow is the top rather than a front.
>pulse lasers are more accurate than regular lasersHow? They are lasers. Light speed is light speed. The canon explanation makes 0 sense. It would explain damage...
>>97550056If anything regular lasers would be more accurate as you can physically see if they miss and adjust mid-beam for at least partial damage
>>97550056It's a gap in the abstraction, sometimes a laser "missing" actually just means it couldn't hold on one spot long enough to do damage, not that it was a complete whiff. A pulse laser that can't hold for long enough could still do damage because of the debris settling away before follow-up pulses that make it in. An argument could be made to have lasers do cluster damage, or do less damage if you only barely manage to hit (or maybe even still do a little damage on a near miss, but lasers really don't need the extra help), with pulses doing more. But that's a level of complication that the devs didn't want to or didn't think of putting on it.
>>97549998At least one of them rotates the seats match the direction of thrust.
>>97549400He's part of my WoB Militia :)
>>97549973That sounds interesting. Are you using AS to play infantry skirmishes in the Battletech universe?

>>97550183That’s exactly correct, although it’s a highly modified version of AS>>97550275They are resin
>>97550232I try my best not to think about Alpha Strike.
Imagine modifying AS instead of Btech for an infantry game. Not having ablative body armor. not tracking damage to internal organs. No unmanageable 100 page hardback tome of infantry small arms with a separate 50 page supplement for the support weapons. Why even bother?
One of the guys in my group has been advocating for BLKOUT as a decent Battletech infantry combat sim. Haven't tried it yet though, but apparently its mini mechs could adequately represent Battle Armor

I wonder what they were thinking with putting all that ammo into Crusader's CT? Like I get putting most of the weapons on the arms since that's how the Macross or whatever design more or less looked originally but that bomb is bizarre. Was there a time before through armor criticals when having ammo in CT was the safest spot for it?
>>97551707>>97551715They'd look sweet in DFury colors
>>97551741There was a time before engine heat sinks where a lot of side torso bombs were actually very well padded. But I'm pretty sure TACs have been around since the beginning.

>>97551840Aye those are mine :) I've a fairly large amount of Battle Armour and Protomechs alongside my WoB mechs. I love the combined arms aspect of Alpha Strike since those rules make it pretty fun to bring non-mechs and Protos are fun af to use in Classic. Plus I love the fact the Domini are the only non-Clan force to have even a small amount of Protos so I really leaned into that. I've also a large Militia force but haven't added to it in a while as I'm focusing on expanding the 52nd side of my army right now with an all WoB-mech design lance, plus Manei Domini Demon series BA and Bolla tanks. Planning to add loads of BA and vehicles to my Militia once I'm done with this. Not sure what yet, besides Longinus and Purifier BA and Gladius tanks.

>>97551614The Justice is actually a pretty good loadout for a 60 tonner from the 3025 era. PPC, LL, four ML's and 18 heat sinks. So basically you fire both the LL and PPC's at range, and then when you get in close, under the PPC's minimum range you switch to the Medium Lasers.

>>97551762I dunno, shoving in a Dragon where nobody, literally nobody, wants it is very much a Draconis Combine thing. Personally, I'd have liked a Hatamoto variant or a Charger.

Wonder if gold cockpit glass on blue armor will look good. has anyone tried?
>>97551918I'm actually surprised it isn't a Hata, they have a new sculpt that IWM used for the Hatamoto-Suna. Maybe with the Shiro and Rokurokubi being dark age/ilclan mechs they felt it would be too far future coded with a late dark age Hatamoto-X variant. >>97554122Cronus isn't particularly offensive, as the SW-era variant is not supposed to be a completely new mech, but a refit made by a small FWL-based company using salvaged Griffins or Shadow Hawks with some components replaced. Just imagine if it was Pardoe who invented it. His buttblast would be seen from orbit.
To be fair sci-fi has a long history of detonating fusion reactors and fusion batteries.Even in Aliens they claim they evaporate the colony by overheating the fusion reactor of the atmospheric processor. And so the colony being intact in Colonial Marines video game might either be seen as a plot hole, or as a correct representation of what would happen if the fusion reactor failed.

>>97555162Technically it's not the reactor itself exploding, but the reactor shielding cracking and causing superheated plasma to come into contact with far cold air, which on most planets with breathable atmosphere will contain at least some amount of moisture. >>97555792>in later eras.I do not concern myself with the fanfiction of faggots and thieves.
I always figured cracking the fusion engine's casing made it impossible to keep the constant pressure needed to maintain the fusion, causing the whole thing to collapse and create an equal opposite reaction because it was still running, or something along those lines i don't know how 30th/31st century fusion engines work
>>97555860Or maybe shards of shrapnel get into it and causes a mini supernova effect i don't know
>>97555792>Clan Sea Fox taking over from ComstarThis is one of the biggest pieces of horseshit of ilClan. Clans have never had the populace to staff something the level of Comstar which is billions and billions of people. You read something like Hunters of the Deep and the clan is so small, most of them can literally ship around in their Amiag fleets. Settlements on worlds are like one or two big cities. It doesn't matter how much money they have or plot armor. They do not have the bodies for the job. Now, the way to handle this would be to have the lower functionaries still be Robes with an "under new management" sticker taped on like the Stoners did when they nationalized the HPG's. Then you could get a badass storyline much like Fochstar being 1/4-1/2 Blakists where the Robes are just paying lipservice to the clanners but secretly rebuilding and siphoning funds. But, CGL is too fucking retarded to do any of that.
>>97555882>But, CGL is too fucking retardedRight, so why even acknowledge what they do?
>>97555947Because Battletech is the last western franchise I haven't given up on.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuCWXGFteTw
I'm glad that Comstar and Word of Blake are dead, they should have left the story since long time ago.
>>97555970thiswe need more clans too
>>97555970I feel the same way about the clans, but more so, because I am right.
>>97555970I hope clans die next, it's long overdo.
>>97555964Ignoring the perversions inflicted on it by the current licensee is not the same as "giving up on it"Rather it is the opposite, subscribing to their changes implies a lack of faith in the core canon material, a need or desire on your part to see alterations made.Battletech as FASA made it needs no expansions or alterations, it was right just the way it was, so why not ignore the insults inflicted on it by the financial games of suits and shareholders?
new thread?new thread!>>97555988>>97555988
>"fuck the clanners"Okay>fucks elemental gf
>>97555978no. you cant have more clans until you finish the ones on your plate first.
>>97555982Because I was there when the ancient magic was written. I know the truth. They are all the same people writing. It has always been that way. Names change as Weisman chases his get rich quick schemes, or we need funding from the Germans to keep from closing down, but the writers and directors have pulled from the same pool since the beginning. FASA when it closed became Fanpro America become Catalyst Game Labs. It's a clear line through. Only the names on the sign have changed. Wizkids and DA was Weisman, himself. It's rather funny, when you think about it.
>>97556015>They are all the same people writing.Incorrect, they are SOME of the same people writing, they are writing under licensing constraints, under a different owner (not topps but coleman) and they are writing to appeal to modern politics of the moment, they are doing so without the involvement of certain members of the original team and with explicit sanction against some of those members (Pardoe for example).CGL is not FASA, I reject the assertion and look down on those who make it.
>>97554463>>97554846This was already proven, in this general, multiple times. Retards like you doubting it have also been disproven multiple times, in this general.
