>Still no fucking dropper bottles shaped like bolter cartridges is annoying though.
Interesting idea!
I started making all these bolter rounds a while ago and the final step was planning to make a fake imperium branded cardboard box like a real commercial ammo box. That would be a fun gimmick for GW to do and sell in packages like that.
It's probably not practical but it's not like I buy GW paints anyway so I don't care.
>>
>>97666685
>shaped like bolter cartridges
Once upon a time GW did make paint pots shaped kinda like bolter shells. And they were absolutely awful (almost as bad as people keep making the current ones out to be). GW will have to wait for another 2-3 decades before the memories of those have fade enough that returning to the idea of bolter shaped paint pots/bottles won't get all of Nottingham brunt down.
>>

Could easily just use dropper bottles with a rounded cap. GW, hire me.

are you very particular about your brushes or can you use anything if it gets the job done
is the game over if paint reaches the ferrule or do you just rinse it off and go on your merry way
also to brush soap or not to brush soap is there a difference

>>
>>97668439
>brush type
real sable is a lot better than synthetics and lasts far longer, but synthetics also range from shit to usable. Just don't buy GW or you'll pay sable prices for synthetic brushes.
>ferrule
you can use isopropyl or other solvents to clean it out
>brush soap
makes a difference with real sable and a small tub of b&j will last forever with tiny miniature painting brushes. for synthetics I am not sure it actually matters
>>
>>97668439
real hair brushes are a game changer
take care not to load them to much, especially with washes
rinse often while painting, never use to mix paints unless in very small quantities
use just about any hand soap after every session, comb it and let the soap dry on the brush until the next time you use it, this keeps it in shape and somewhat protected
>>
if a brush is just hair on the end of a stick how come if the ends get fucked you can't just give it a hair cut and have clean ends again?

>>
>>97668520

>>
>>97668439
I use the beard oil my wife got me
>>
>>97668495
The shape is important, having a sharp tip is important for getting nice clean lines. If you can't get the tip sharp again the brush isn't completely fucked, just need to change what you use it for. Can always make it a base coat brush that doesn't need to paint sharp lines, or use it for washes. Can also cut the tip and make it a flat or a filbert for dry brushing. Once it gets absolutely fucked you can use it for basing and such. If you try out oil washes an old frayed sable brush is fantastic for gently blending out the edges for a really smooth transition.
>>
>>97668606
Wouldn't a little comb be adorable though?
>>
>>97668495
You kind of can, but if it gets too short, it loses shape. Some brushes have a misplaced hair that sticks out, I cut those off.

One of my halfling kitbash/conversions. With these guys I was trying to capture the kind of dynamic look that you can get with a monopose plastic kits, or also commonly with metal and resin figures. The main way I accomplished it with these guys was using a tilt pinning method. I cut off the integral base, and from there shaped the bottom of the feet that would be exposed. Then I kind of tilted them around on the base, seeing how they looked at various degrees of tilt. When I came up with something satisfactory I would drill up into the foot, and on small parts of the integral base I left attached to the feet to give extra room for a more solid pin job. From there I used brass rod pins and drilled into the base. Then, to create an even more aggressive pose I used a small piece of styrene strip for the back foot of the mini, to help create that appearance of forward movement by further tilting the mini forward. The bases i use have a lip on them, which I backfill with texture paste to cover up integral bases. In this case it hides the styrene strip and gives that appearance of seamless integration without making him look like he's standing on some slope.

I used parts from the WGA halfling militia kit, along with the cavalry kit for the base of the figure. The torso, head and arms are all from the militia kit. They were originally holding a halberd. I just clipped off the shaft of it to form two separate arms which shape up to a good dynamic swinging or aggressive kind of pose. The shield hand, and his sword and the hand holding it were clipped from separate parts. The sword comes from another WGA kit, Roman Citizens.

I clipped the original hands off and it was a drill/pin job that came together pretty well. I added the feather pinned to his helmet, which comes from empire state troops/handgunners kits.

Paint is still a work in progress but I wanted to share one.
>>
>>97668809

God, I need to get better lighting. Here is my default lion rampent english force.

Anyone have some tips for taking better model photos? both in terms of lighting and positioning? I always seems to have my models stretched out too horizontally so that the detail doesnt show and there is a lot of dead space at the top and bottom. also , what angel do people prefer? Frontal and slightly above, like 20 degrees? I am never satisfied with the photos I take and they always come out worse then what theyu look like IRL. Maybe get a white backgrounnd so light bounces and there is less background distractions? Maybe its just my older Iphone camera too...

Big emergency, WIP.

I think my DIY wet palette sponge grew mould.
I was away from home for a while and forgot to remove the water from it so it is my fault.
I panicked and dumped 99 percent isopropyl alcohol onto the sponge and then submerged it inside the sandwich box with the alcohol but the staining is still there.

How do I save the sponge?

I legitimately never knew I was gonna have a sentimental feeling for a DIY wet palette and yet here we are.
>inb4 replace sponge
I have difficulties finding a thin sponge on aliexpress that fits inside the systema brand from dollar store's sandwich box so I want to preserve the sponge as long as possible.
>>
>>97672495
keep it as it is as long as youve killed the mold with chemicals it's fine even if theres some staining
>>
>>97672510
Alright.
The sponge is still submerged in 99 percent isopropyl alcohol.
How long should i keep it submerged?
>>
>>97672495
why are you trying to use alcohol to kill mold? if you're too autistic to just throw it out and make a new one at least use bleach. these kinds of tools should be considered consumable in the first place.
>>
>>97672565
>if you're too autistic to just throw it out and make a new one at least use bleach. these kinds of tools should be considered consumable in the first place.
Fair enough.
I'll go hunting on aliexpress for thin sponges then.

As for the sandwich box is it salvageable from alcohol disinfecting?
>>
>>97672495
nigga doesnt that sponge cost like a dolla or something, just fucking buy a new one
>>
>>97672584
>nigga doesnt that sponge cost like a dolla or something, just fucking buy a new one
The source stopped selling the ones I'm looking for.
It was a large thin in height one I think it was meant for cleaning cars. I was able to cut it to perfectly fit my sandwich box.

That's why I kind of have a need to preserve it. Until I find a new source of sponges in such a size. The stuff I've seen are too tall in height and I'm not sure about shaving them down as I don't think I could do that properly.
Unless there is a different kind of sponge that is normally thin and wide.
I'm not sure how Swedish Dish Cloths are for wet palette application usage.

Can you cut channels in Oyamaru/bluestuff in order to pour liquid resin into the mold? Has anyone tried that?
>>
>>97673568
Resin might be a big ask. I know that tutorials for miliput/greenstuff casting suggested some channels; but I'm not sure you'll get a tight enough seal or a good cure out of a two part soft cast like that with a poured medium.
>>

Resin would be a bad idea because it heats up as it cures which will warp the oyumaru.

angle them so the flag shows better. add an immersive background, add a proper table and terrain to put them in the setting. lighting im not sure about
>>
>>97671311
For a start, don't expect the photo to be done and ready for posting the instant you've hit the shutter button. Get Photoshop or Lightroom or something and use it. Adjust shadows/highlights, crop the image so you don't have that dead space issue, kick around the colour balance so shit looks in the image the way it looks in reality, etc.
Light, well, lots of it and diffuse. But i you're thinking of bouncing light around with a white background that probably isn't news to you. Details? Nothing to it really bu getting in closer (physically or optical zoom). Angles, well, try basically all of them. use what works, which may vary form model to model. And an old iPhone doesn't help, but then again, don't expect a new phone to help much either. The image processing they rely on for good results doesn't know what to do with miniatures, and so the result is often a smudgy mess. Basically we're back to the advice of fifteen years ago: don't use a phone to take photos, use a camera.

If you use photoshop to erase brush marks, clean up even lines, smooth out transitions, and otherwise make the paintjob look better than it really is? Sure. People obviously can't help you with problems you hide from them. But instead you can just use Photoshop to lift shadows/drop highlights (not in the paintjob itself, but in the lighting of the mini) to improve the visible dynamic range, clean up noise, crop unnecessary bits, and so on. This makes the paintjob easier to see, warts and all, and so actually it helps if you want constructive criticism of it.

There are plenty of programs that can do focus stacking (I use Helicon focus nowadays).

>>97676435
Closing down the aperture will only get you so far, especially since we're largely dealing with macro photography here. But yeah, if you only shoot at f/2.8 and wonder why you can only get a tiny sliver in focus at once... (Sure, you can focus-stack that away, but it's going to take a fuckton of individual images and plenty of computing power to combine them.)
>>
This was probably covered multiple times already but - how to prevent brushes from getting damaged and have them keep their tip intact? I have bunch of Kolibri and Lineo (that's what my local art shops stock anyway) ones that might more or less keep the shape when fully loaded but looks like this when not in use. Normally I clean them with either soap (normal one, not liquid) or shampoo, tried using hair conditioner too but it didn't really help for shape (they are visibly softer in touch, however). I make sure there is no residual paint left after cleaning but it always creep up to handle anyway so I make sure they are always wet. Actual art students I talked with at few shops use pretty much the same, some even dishwasher solution but I guess they don't need the tip that much sharp (and given that they were rather cute female students, they could making fun of me, don't know). Shops staff, of various age, also suggested only soap. There is also a problem with brushes gradually losing sharpness of their tip over time and use. I really don't know what to do now.

By the way, there was one odd situation - I paid a visit to some new shop, located in rather expensive location and their brush stock was entirely composed of Davinci synthetics. When I asked some staff girl if they have natural hair ones, she was almost insulted by that question. Absolutely no idea why.

>But yeah, if you only shoot at f/2.8 and wonder why you can only get a tiny sliver in focus at once...

I usually use 60mm macro lens for scale models and minis and usually shoot with f/16 (no point in going smaller than that anyway as diffraction effects will affect the photo) and I still have rather shallow depth of field. You cannot really go above that with very small objects and close distances.

My new year collage is example - even with those settings, there are areas of the minis that are clearly out of focus.
>>
>>97676688
Stick um in ur motuh and suck as you twirl and pull it out...

Also get some soap and let the brushes sit with sharp tips with some soap in them. Like hard soap or brush soap.

Over time they will degrade but these look salvagable.

What would be the best way to make plinths for these? Feels like with the size it would be a little weird, like the proportions would be funny and the plinth would be too light and it would fall over. I guess maybe a small squat little plinth? Something like a truncated cone?

1. make absolutely certain you aren't getting paint into the ferrule. It doesn't look like that's what's happening, but keep it in mind. Try to keep the paint on the lower half of the bristles and don't use good brushes for washes
2. don't store the brushes tip down if they're touching the surface. The weight of the brush will damage and bend the bristles.
3. get actual brush soap. The Masters brush soap and conditioner is great

For those wondering where the dislike for editing images comes from. Here represented is a mini that had all kinds of things going wrong, and I kept going instead of stripping it.
On the bottom, it is with normal camera settings on a white background, only some white balancing done, to get the colours close to the mess I see.
On the top, you have the dark background with settings messed with until it was nearly pure black. The model looks less horribly, fine for the grimderp aesthetic.

So that was a sort of "mistakes into miracles" moment because I originally got them all basecoated nicely with white. Then the guide I was following to paint marble told me to apply Reikland Fleshshade and Drakenhof Nightshade, then get a mechanical pencil to draw veins. Well, despite following the guide to the letter, the shades settled much starker than the guide showed they would and the mechanical pencil was just scratching away paint and not drawing.
I managed to get back to the white basecoat then used one of my messed up brushes to smoosh/stipple on a light grey, then just glazed back over with the white, adding some slightly thicker glazed lines and texture stipples.
The white I used was PA Bold Titanium White mixed with Vallejo Model Color White Grey. And the light grey was Vallejo Model Color Sky Grey or Light Grey, can't remember.

I just got longwinded is all.
Relevant steps for you:
Basecoat off-white. As close to white you can get without being actual pure white.
Stipple/smoosh on light grey with an abused brush.
Glaze with the off-white basecoat color while occasionally doing stipples or squiggles with it.

stop the paint flow before stopping the air flow or else you end up with paint on the tip
always keep the tip clean
don't go too heavy on the paint flow or it pools up in weird ways

with enough flow improver and PSI, anything is possible... but I still don't recommend airbrushing apple barrel paints

picture says it all but the main point is the march 6 2008

and i still have no idea what wet palette sponge means and how can you get it moldy

nta, don't be dense, it's the layer of foam that sits under the parchment paper, tap water and darkness can make it moldy, also some paints may promote mold growth too

your paper is your experience and that's fine, other people have other experiences, and some are just misinformed or dumbfucks

the foam layers that come with wet palettes are designed to keep as much moisture as possible and for sure won't just dry overnight in open air unless you live in 10% humidity or 40ºC
so yes, if you leave it moist and closed, with or without paint for a few days, it's possible it will grow mold, it's not going to harm you most likely but it's gross nonetheless, and once it happens if not cleaned properly it will keep happening more often, so knowing you can clean it with bleach is something that some people need to be taught, and that's fine

Little update on the halfling kitbash I posted yesterday. Working on some highlights. Dropped the basing in so that I could show how the tilt and raised back foot become basically indistinguishable once you have added some basing materials. Tufts, rocks and what have you can hide the difference in grade pretty well. It's also a good way to hide ugly feet if you aren't big on scribing out the shape yourself.

Overall I think this one was a success. Glad I gave plastic minis a shot. Still enjoy my metal and resin figures but these have no doubt been fun to dream up and out together.

Hey anons.
I've been thinking of making dioramas so I figured I better resort to art store acrylics due to how much brown paint I'll need for the dirt basing.

I saw pic related as one of the review images where the brown paint "clumped" up to look like hunks of feces when it was finally squeezed out.

What causes this and what can be done to prevent this?
And how do I make sure my art store acrylics don't have this problem when I am about to buy them?

I did find it funny seeing that though.

>>
>>97680962
afaik, drying time depends on the oil paint composition assuming you are thining with white spirit

i have seen recomended somewhere to let the paint sit for a few hours on a piece of paper or cardboard so the actual oil gets sucked into the paper, less oil = less drying time
>>
>>97681044
>i have seen recomended somewhere
Yes, you should always do that with oil paints if you want to speed things up. ~2 hours on a piece of cardboard is generally enough. This is especially needed if you are using something like AK/Abteilung oil paints, since I've found they tend to be a bit heavy on linseed oil.

I just remembered something.

Can mod Podge can a total replacement for PVA glue?
Like water it down for sand basing and water it down further as a seal to prevent sand from coming off?

And I learned of Mod Podge Ultra Matte and from my searching it only comes in spray bottles in Canada at least.
Since it says brushing on is an option, I'd rather replace the nozzle with a squeeze bottle nozzle.

Has anybody bought the alternative replacement nozzles for Pro Acryl's paint bottles? Will those work for the Ultra Matte Mod Podge spray bottle so I can just squeeze a little out and use that for basing?

Or like I said before is the mod podge matte like Ak Ultra Matte so it is unnecessary to worry about the difference between matte and ultra matte when it comes to mod podge?

How do you go about basing on a slotta base if you want there to be stuff under their feet, like road stones or something? Is it just better to cut the model off the slotta insert at that point and treat it like a regular model?
>>
>>97682139
>put the basing materials you want on
>dry fit the slotta to make sure it fits and there aren't any gaps
>remove the mini, put something in the slot to keep is open (popsicle stick, blue tack, etc.)
>prime and paint
>gently remove the blocking material from the slot and clean it up
>put mini in when ready
Or as you said cut the slotta off the model and plug the hole on the base. If you're going that route then the best bet is to pin the model and pre-measure and drill the hole before you prime.
>>
>>97682139
who doesn't cut the slotta off?
