You'd have thunk they'd've used the conversion units part of the journals to crank out a lot of reasons for people to buy kits that they wouldn't normally buy for their army, but they genuinely seem to have not tried to do that at all and just make journals as barebones and undesirable as possible. I wonder if the studio doesn't like making them and wants an excuse to not do them again or if they just dont give a fuck.
>>97729547Absolutely not

>>97729572>as barebones and undesirable as possibleIf the first version of the legacy pdf or the liber pages being half empty was anything to go by those are the things they are striving for in 3.0 so I'm not surpised at all. They have no idea of what they are doing, they moved so much stuff from libers to pdfs, split off different units when they can buy jump packs, terminator armour, bikes, etc... or even consuls into different units and then did the whole equipment lists things which freed up a lot of space that got filled by nothing. It's like they have a bunch of people going in different directions without talking to each other and to me it seems they are doing journals because they don't know how to do big books anymore. Since july they have released the isstvan one, the skitarii one and the saturnine one, each of which was 48 pages, Chtonia alone was 240.

>>97729618Fuck I'd go all in on blackshields for a Journal. Marauder squads are the perfect kitbash fodder. You can give them all sorts of weapons, knives from mk4, chainswords and chain axes from assault marines, shotguns from scouts. Dual wield bolt pistols, give them special weapons from the upgrade kits, etc.A Reaver Lord option that can sit somewhere between a centurion and a Praetor to represent junior officers that have been hardened by ages of assymetic warfare.Hell you could even give options for makeshift weapons, like drop pods crammed with explosives because they couldn't get their hands on normal missiles. Then you can have proper rules for Harr, and Morturg. And to round it off and sell the book to all the other marine players I'd include rules for space marine fleet officers, who can call down orbital bombardments and help call in aircraft more reliably.

>>97730439You're in the wrong timeline anon. >>97730472I was talking more about splitting profiles between things like command squads. You got your regular footsloggers, the jump pack version, the cataphractii option, or the tartaros one. All of a sudden, you’ve turned one unit into four separate ones. It’s unnecessary bloat in the style of modern 40k, especially when it applies nearly every character.
>>97730439Agreed, they even removed RoWs.
>>97730528>printing out absolute dogwater scans and misaligned captures via phoneboth the present and future are grimb and darbk...... how fitting......
>>97730472There are 40 pages of consuls in the pdf to achieve what 1.0 did in seven just because they couldn't be bothered to let jump packs, bikes and terminator armour remain wargear as an example.

>>97730564Or even let the consuls remain as extra rules rather than separate units, to add to my own post.

>>97730614
I don’t have much to new add to the 2.0 vs 3.0 discussion but I do have some thoughts. 1.0 to 2.0 lost about 30% of the games flavor, and fucked up the rules in a different way than 1.0. Instead of having Giga Rapist Mech, Aux, and Stodies, they were toned down but the braindead playtesters didn’t fix existing problems. I don’t believe the “we didn’t get enough playtesting” theory as we have that players doc with the third pass of loyalist rules and the one google doc with plenty of changes they were making from one pass to another, the team was just not suited for it.3.0 lost another 10%, and created additional hurdles to play. Now, with at least 50 games of 3.0 under my belt, I can’t tell you for sure why the detachment system was prioritized over Rites and old Force Org. We we’re definitely breaking that shit at the scale 30k plays at but the baby was thrown out with the bathwater. Despite that? It’s a fun ruleset. I think that there were very few times where I didn’t have fun in 3.0. Balance is better, good enough to get me to start two new armies, but even now I find it annoying to go over the hurdle of Look at Unit > Find Detachment > Add it > Find Unit > Add it > Go through the “truncated” list of sgt/cool guy wargear from Look at Unit > Find it > Add wargear. It’s probably 3.0’s actual biggest fumble and where I lose most of the new people that I try to introduce into the game. Beyond every other issue I think it’s what’s going to be killed or heavily scaled back first when 4.0 drops. Have a photo of a Spider Moirax for reading my blogpost.
>>977306144 bolters and 1 plasma cannonOr4 volkite chargers and 1 culvern
>>97730679>I can’t tell you for sure why the detachment system was prioritized over Rites and old Force OrgThey make a game different to justify the new edition, no to make it better.
>>97730679>>97730321I've heard a lot of what rules good, rules bad. But can you tell me something good about the new detachment system?I didn't need HQ chaperones to access dedicated transports, now I do.So, what's something good about the new system? Rites of War died for this?
>>97730764>Rites of War died for this?RAW, yes. You can still recreate them sans special rules but it's not the same.
>>97730679James realized it can only make a balanced game by removing player choice and its entirely the playerbase's fault
>>97730833Yeah sure. Have you looked at Kill Team?
>>97730764If you read my post you’d see I’m not in favor of the new detachment system. What I AM liking, however: >new restrictions on reactions make them still enjoyable to use but not so abusable melee armies got raped within moments of approach. New ones are also really useful.>damage values are surprisingly well developed, I feel that there are very few weapons that feel like they don’t punch properly>terminators being T5 is fucking great, I love the extra pip of usable toughness instead of fuckin… idk sometimes you can reroll blast saves>Vehicles not popping T1/T2 from luck sucks (I really did enjoy this part of the VDT) but being able to have functions disabled is actually quite fun and at the same time just as serious in terms of affecting your game plan>statuses are in the same boat, great way to mix up the game without having to invent or flip the weapon balance on its headThere is bad though>challenges are RETARDED!!! I don’t even Flurry or Finishing Blow anymore, I just withdraw. Waste of time for the same result as the old system>needlessly nerfing plasma to make room for disintegrators but not actually filling the now empty role of old disintegrators was stupid. >4 turns works, even for slow armies, but now the slow armies can really only crutch their gameplan on mass statuses. This is not bad, I love the status system, but it is not fair to gimp playstyles like this. This goes for the killing of special ROW rules like deep striking Justaerin.>why the fuck did melee lose acces to extra attacks on the charge or pistol/melee? Stupid. Never a reason to give a tac sgt melee weapons anymore. Not even a “one day he may get lucky…” it’s just a waste.
>>97730764>So, what's something good about the new system?Removing the unequal access to breaking the force org chart created by rite of wars, since that was the reason 70% of them existed. Now every legion doesn't need a special rute of war doesn't need an unbalanced (op or dogshit) rite totaje their elites without troops, it's just baked into the system The downside is the 30% of rites that WEREN'T just there to let marines skip troop tax, and are inadequately represented in the spare price benefits that were meant to replace them. Every legion needed to start with 3 to fill out the flavor lost with rites and legion rule simplification, with them being the major addition added in each journal for the various subfactions served rather than the main attraction bizarrely being mission packs (which genuinely are good missions, but confusing that that was the priority)
>>97730764No, list building turned into a fucking game of jenga because of it. God forbid i want to change out a HQ choice of mine with out having to re do the whole fucking list again.
>>97730764Nothing. I guess I like the fact it's closer to how something like a 30k company would be structured but even then that's a stretch and the old RoWs did a better job at capturing that.
>>97729203Outside occasional vidya, I haven't played warhammer since maybe 1997 (when I was a little kid), I was looking to get back into it, then I saw a list of fucking 40+ armies and couldn't believe my eyes. WTF is "mono sisters" and "pathless ynnari" armies? Why are there armies of nothing but imperial fortresses?I call that max bloat. And don't get me started on the lore changes; Roboute Guilliman leads the imperium now? WHAT?! What is with GW's fixation on the ultramarines? Do you know how they came up with the idea of the ultramarines? They looked at a bucket of ultramarine colored paint and said "that sounds cool", nothing in that warrents them being the heroes of the 40k universe. Also I'm NOT calling them "Aeldari", fuck that, they're ELDAR.
>>97731114Yeah modern 40k is fucked. >UMThat's nothing, they literally came up with "marines but better and without any flaws with donut steel weapons and armour". The aeldari ynnari bullshit is also not only in the eldars, even marines, chaos, guard, etc... have gained retarded names for units just so GW can trademark them. Also this is the horus heresy general, not the 40k one. Except in the final half/third of their range where that's exchanged for damage.
>>97730897>Never a reason to give a tac sgt melee weapons anymoreThis. Sarges became fucking irrelevant unless Prime'd. I wonder if the Duel system would make sense between low level sarges...But people say it's all Seize vs Finishing? And idk what it'd be like to solve 5 duels in the same turn lmao
>>97730897>>needlessly nerfing plasma to make room for disintegrators but not actually filling the now empty role of old disintegrators was stupid.I hate this because models are survivable enough for the game to have actual AP2 disintegrators, AP2 plasma at least in supercharge, and AP2 axes.Terminators can take it. Hell, a terminator can tank a NuDisintegrator because it's S4 vs their T5: If Disintegrators were AP2, for every dead terminator there would be 75% chance of disintegrating yourself.Currently? For every terminator there is 225% chance of self-kill.That is, you kill on 2/3 * 1/3 * 1/6 = 1/27Shooter dies on 1/6 * 1/2 = 1/12
>>97730803>You can still recreate them sans special rules but it's not the same. It's alright that making a list is no longer "gotta take a Master of the Legion or else I'm missing out"It's alright that we have a reason to take a Centurion other than "I couldn't afford putting him through Consul College"It's alright that different Consuls unlock exclusive DetachmentsIt's alright that different Legions unlock their own exclusive DetachmentsIt's not alright that actual Rites of War died for bland shitIt's not alright that you have to take extra HQ to afford what used to be dedicated transportsFor real, we could've had both things. >>97731767I wish people could still play their full tank, full bike, mass dreadnought, full terminator armies without playing an army that auto loses or straight up is impossible to do.
>>97731949Aight how do I say "the average of this event is 2.25 times bigger than the average of that other event"?Imagine having a unit with a 2+ save (1/6) and one with a 3+ save (1/3). One has twice as many times the chance of failing their armour save. Thus, 200% chance.Give it full AP2 coward.
Completely stuck on what to paint my Auxillia. Started painting them as Caliban Jaegers to go with my DA but I kind of want them to be independent of DA stuff. I do like the Extertus Grey on the tanks, might just go metallic black with some blue accents.

>>97732124>Gotta score, at the very least.Dreads are actually perfectly fine at scoring honestly, everyone reeing about tactical supremacy clearly is the kind of retard who reeed about heavy support squads being unbeatable monsters last edition because they ALSO crutched on heavy support squads so it became a stalemate matchup. As it turns out, literally any kind of non committal fast assault unit remains the underground king, for all the biker haters out there.
>>97732179Lotta screeching about seekers too. It is wild that for two editions in a row now, retards are crying and shitting themselves over 1 wound 3+ save models. It's a miracle that most wargamers know how to operate a tape measure, because they sure as hell don't sound smart enough for it.

>>97732524It even requires the use of dice, just like 40k!Look, if 40k has no more haters you'll know I'm dead, but some of you fuckers are suffering from 40k derangement syndrome. There's no armour save modifiers, attacks and strength aren't tied to melee weapons rather than models, and all the other actual retarded shit 40k does. And if the existence of a movement value rustles your jimmies it must come as a shock that 2nd edition 40k had that already. With the addition of more morale stats like willpower and intelligence HH is moving more towards the earliest two editions of 40k if anything.

>>97732954It's funnier that Saturnine went from the contemporary and equivalent of Tartaros and Indomitus to being the first (even before Cataphractii, which was among the first), existing during the Unification Wars, and being also tied to Saturn (but Emperor forbid if the faction based on Saturn gets to use them).I'm scared to imagine what type of monster they'll make of the remaining terminator design. Probably a contemptor sized super-heavy suit with even more guns.

>>97732124I agree having a tank HQ or add consul/pretor/centurion to tank would be nice. And you are right that they could always play a mixed army. Does take a way a bit from playing army X to I play a nerfed version of a regular list with 40 tacticals, just like everyone else. Plus the cynic in my thinks that over time a person who just splurged those tacticals in to their bike or tank army, would notice that if they remove more bikes/terminators and add more of those things that are used in every list, which eventualy would just end with them playing the same list as everyone else. And bikes as a core of an army, I think, are unfixable. GW made the game about scoring objectives, contesting etc And army that can't score or contest just makes no sense. And I am telling this before any arguments, for or against, bikes/speeders not being viable. Contemtpors on the other hand seem to have dodge the bullet a bit. Now I don't think leviathan are that useful and instead of a doredeo you can just take 2xcasterferrum, but contemptors are okey. No longer Gods of War, but with lack of fists and melta they are suprising durable as a distraction carnifex. And of course in some armies they are better then in other armies. All in all I am just sad for friends who had armies, spend a lot of money and time on them, and now it is just not worth for them to come to the store. And I do not live in a place with 200+ HH players, losing 10 cut our playgroup practicaly in half, and of those that are left 2 are ad mecha players and 1 is custodes. So you know this winter for example a lot of people measured the fun of a trip in minus 20 or lower celcius vs fun playing against the same WE list, and just did not come.
>>97733748yeah, because as we know from Prussian and British military books, a men 30 min in an engagment on a field where artilery was used, has to have a uniform in perfect white. In reality it one has to admire the dedication of people doing the shoulder pad colours for marines, and that after 2-3 days most of the armour isn't "ceramite" and "cermite paste" coloured.

Meanwhile 3.0's issues are fundamental problems with the core systems that would require a complete ground-up rewrite to address(which is a pointless endeavour since both 1.0 and 2.0 and the old 4th-era 40K fan supplement already exist covering all reasonable and justifiable tastes); short games, progressive scoring, the retarded "status-stacking is better anti-tank than actual anti-tank" situation, the pointless timewaste of the challenge minigame that was a solved problem before the edition even officially released, the complete obliteration of deep strike as a deployment strategy in the game literally about The Guys Who Deep Strike, the needlessly convoluted listbuilding - christ you could hit the character limit for posting here twice and still not describe every problem.

>>97734425Nta but when I read ligma's core rules it was clear that they were rewritten several times by different people over half a decade. There were parts that did nothing and others that contradicted each other. Like 2.0 it tries to reinvent the wheel but does its best to forget how a wheel looked like but 2.0 was an interim edition to ease in the changes of 3.0. It's based off 2nd edition epic which is one of the least played editions and they outright did some things the old developers went out of their way to avoid. You have special rules like anti tank that don't make weapons better against their target (tanks in this case) but worse against other ones (infantry). The worse thing is the the near totality of ligma players are 40k players and not HH players so they just keep asking for things like eldars, orks, tau, nids, etc, go out of their way to avoid reading fluff, keep beating dead horse memes and min maxing. One of the first event had mostly chill lists that didn't go out of their way to break the game and then one of those 40k players played the mathematically best list and was confused why no one else went out of their way to make everyone else miserable. That, for me was the last straw. I didn't mind ligma but 40k players shouldn't have human rights let alone be allowed in hh-adjacent places.

>>97733734Listen I’ve watched you go through these guys from the very first model. I admire your dedication to following your artistic impulse, but please hear me when I saw that you’re crossing far across the line from “bespoke” to “nonsensical”Truly I get it, each eater is an individual, and the unifying theme is the ground that they’re fighting on. I can’t help but feel that if you had made them more uniform in armor mark, it would have better sold the “same but different” you achieve by swapping helmets and weapons and bits like that. As it is, they look way more like a 40k kill team, this doesn’t feel like a heresy army. I say that with no malice, but mixing in heresy era armour marks, 40k chaos kits, one-off 3d prints, and some customized sculpting has completely lost a sense of identity. The only thing unifying about them is the weathering, which ALSO suffers because of the broad and over eccentric spread of models. The red and white scheme is excellent and it’s such a solid ground to start with, but brother you’ve done too much here. Each model looks like you decided to start over with the idea from scratch over and over again but not in a good way. I want better from you, this isn’t a squad, it’s a warband from a time warp and you have better than this in you.

So im building a storm eagle, and i had to use clamps to keep some of the parts connected to each other as they dried, but i realized that means there is still stress on that join because of the resin still wanting to retian its original shape. >>97737259i think that gw's saturnines can potentially afford arms extending out into said limbs a ways but the marines inside are all definitely interchangeable bionic leg enjoyers if not full-on sutured-in fucknuggets as the shape allows nothing else with any degree of sensibility
The Horus Heresy was the best time to be alive for the average human Post-Age of Strife. The novels have implied that the Horus Heresy saw soldiers die on the scale of trillions, in a conflict of a decade or so. That's the most peaceful period of known galactic history. That's at the very least an order of magnitude less slaughter than the average year of the Great Crusade (which was the most well-oiled genocide machine in human hisory), and it's certainly more peaceful than any random year from the 40K era.It turns out that if you interrupt the bureaucracy and logistics of an ultra-fascist galactic genocide project, and have all the transhuman space monsters focus on killing one another, you give the common man of the Galaxy a real breather. The Horus Heresy was certainly the worst period of Imperial history for Astartes and Primarchs and Custodes. It was also a terrible period for any Terran aristocrat, any character with a name, or any world that book-readers have heard of. For an average "normal civilian", though, it was an era of unprecedented peace, prosperity, and relatively loose leashes. Most humans worlds experienced nothing happening at all, most actually prospered, which is as good as it gets
>>97736985Something about date theft or somesuch. I dunno, people were talking about it in another thread.
>>97737299Date theft? Then I think we're on the clear.

>>97737281Which makes you wonder if the exo-suits they originated from also require the operator to be nuggeted (which shouldn't be the case, considering all the Votann exo-suits aren't like that and GW has made a connection between the two) or if Imperium looked at the exo-suits, thought "this would be so much better with a marine nugget inside of it" and a century later came to the conclusion that making armour back into a wearable suit would be better.
>>97737313>Imperium looked at the exo-suits,Mechanicum* looked at the exo suits, this was made by the phobos tech clades which were the guys too freaky for even mars, so yeah it matches they were thinking yeah fuck the flesh
>>97737289m32 after the Scouring but before The Beast was actually an era of unparalleled peace, to the point that space marines seemed obsolete.
>>97737335>Mechanicum was providing Saturnine armour to the Emperor before the Treaty of Olympus
How do the Journal Tactica compare to the Arcane Journals? While there have been a couple whiffs, overall the AJ system in TOW has been quite a fun way to introduce new ways to play armies and allow for new kitbashing opportunities. As the JTs doing the same for HH?
>>97737370we aren't getting any legion journals because post-3.0 sales failed to meet projectionsall our collective fault
>>97737370Journal Tatica is worse than the exemplary battles because those actually came out
>>97735709holy sexo, what model is that?
>>97737515legion medusaonly place i'm able to find it in the way of availability is BLM thoughbeit
>>97737565>legion medusawell, shit, I just made an order from them, adding it to a future one I guess...
>>97737422But surely the idea is to introduce NEW stuff. Not like, "Here's the Emperor's Children's list" because that should be in the Traitor book. More like, "here is a specific Emperor's Children force led by this specific guy and this weird unit that appeared in that force"It would be a great way to introduce stuff that doesn't show up much in the lore, like traitor forces from the Loyalist Legions, or Shattered Legions/Blackshields forces who weren't at Istvaan, that kind of thing.
>>97737370The big difference is unlike old world where there's like 10 main armies, HH has like 25, 18 of which are whiny bitch babies who would start an unholy furor if they tried doing army specific journals like old world amd people had to slowly wait their turn to get one like the black book days, so instead they're just loading up a shotgun and scatter shooting shit where they think it's cool like skitarii, superheavies, and saturnine, which is cool if you like those little segments I guess but godawful for the other 90% of the playerbase who still doesn't get support for what they want to see.
>>97737639Do the new Libers not have enough stuff for the Legions to be going on with?
>>97737741Yes, but a lot of marinefags are whiny bitches, especially DA players and former FoTA abusers.
>>97737741They gutted a shitload of things in the 3.0 Libers that they had to bring back in the Legacies document. Otherwise it's spread pretty thin for new unit profiles with existing models, and seems to more coincide with new model releases than anything else.2.0 was also very spotty with extra supplements, mind, they somehow turned a book on the Martian Civil War into more Imperial Fists wank and there's at least one implication the game may not have had a three-year cycle planned originally, with a numbered volume that didn't even go anywhere after that.
>>97737228It honestly looks dreadnought sized
>>97737289The novels also regularly imply that countless planets tore themselves apart in micro civil wars over mere apprehensions of the Warmaster coming to visit.
>>97738086Saturnine as a kit is also assembled not unlike a Dreadnought.
How do you get outflanking tanks? I was going to say preferably Militia or SA ones, but it seems none of them can outflank.RIP outflanking Russes. Now Strike and Assault Russes are literally the same. The only tank Ive seen can outflank is the Land Raider Explorator.
>>97738156I wonder how Red Scorpions fans feel about finally getting plastic 30k vehicles just as Primaris got well ingrained over 40k Space Marines in general.
>>97737932During the interviews leading up to 3.0 release date some of the HH team talked about how saturnine terminators weren't ready to be put in the 2.0 starter box, so they decided to save them for the 3.0 box. They actually admitted 2.0 wasn't being worked on before it was even out yet. Then there was also shit like daemon Fulgrim's non-functional unit profile, which in hindsight is clearly back-ported into 2.0 from 3.0I am 100% convinced 2.0 was pushed out purely to recoup some of the HH development costs, because it is embarrassing how incomplete it was. There was tons of shit that clearly was never playtested, internal and cross faction balance was a joke, and there were rules copied straight from 1.0 without any regard for how those would work in the new rules set.
>>97737780TRVTH NVKE
>>97738156Keep that badab shit outta here boyo
>>977382202.0 would've probably been fine if they actually balanced the units worth a damn, but too many loose ends. Just a pity that 3.0 has went the way it did.
>>97737228He's a big guy.
>>97737289no, the great crusade was.
>>97737289>Having your planet plunged into chaos and civil infighting by one single Alpha Legion agent purely to make sure it won't pick the wrong sideNo it wasn't.
>>97734657Just asserting "nuh uh" is not a rebuttal, dipshit, let alone objective proof of anything. It's not bait, it's fact, and 3.0 fags can only ever shit their diapies and resort to personal attacks because you *know* I'm unassailably correct. Off you trot pet, it's time for daddy GW to administer your next dick flattening sesh.
>>97735927>IT'S MA'AM
>>97738313And yet it's always the 2.0 defenders who post stuff like shitty diapers. The projecting is off the charts, lmao. Anybody claiming glancing hits are more effective to disable tanks in 3.0 than trying to kill them doesn't understand basic math. Just one of the things that has repeatedly been pointed out already. But I'm sure that explaining statistics and probability, and how this is proven by practical experience, feels like "personal attacks" to you.
if the core critique of 2.0 is 'balance' in a game that ought to be fundamentally collaboratively simulatory and narrative-driven as opposed to being the slightest bit competitive, is it not in fact effectively flawless?
>>97738343No. The problem with 2.0 imbalance is that the vast majority of units are so dysfunctional that they do not simulate the power fantasy they are suppose to. A quick and easy example would be artillery: most barrage weapons besides the scorpius missile launcher were an absolute joke, not feeling like the infrantry pounding terrors that they should be.This is why 1.0 will always be superior in every way to 2.0 without contest. Yes, the game was also quite unbalanced. But in that case it was because most units portrayed their power fantasy very good, if not a bit too well. Magnus the Red blowing up entire tank squadrons with psychic powers, AL saboteurs blowing up units two-four times their cost, artillery blowing hordes of infantry into smithereens, custodes sweeping through astartes in melee without breaking a sweat, mechanicum evaporating armies in short order with esoteric weapon; it was all very cool from a narrative standpoint, but terrible for game balance and having an enjoyable casual player game. 2.0 imbalance in comparison was just extremely lame, nothing but the vast majority of units feeling impotent, only a handful being functional, and dreadnoughts being the god of the edition to the point that the entire game revolved around them.
>>97735927lol
>>977347892nd edition epic makes a lot of sense to base LI off IMO. >Space Marine and 2nd edition epic are certified hood classics >3rd edition is not popular at all even Jervis Johnson admitted he completely fucked it and killed the much better 2nd edition rules before they could flourish. >Epic Armageddon is the most popular with Epic Boomers but its a massive divergent ruleset from 90s epic and AT and the least streamlined with shit like Spacecraft and orbital transports.
>>97738470why'd they behead the chicken doe
OHi get it nowyeowch
>>97738490They're probably one of those terminally woke twitter freaks who think every type of bird iconography is a Nazi symbol.
>>97738511well you see a rooster is a chicken and they're sometimes called cocks and...
>>97738381And what of the power fantasy of the things those things are facing? There are a lot of units in the game, if a handful of them get to feel like gods its because the rest of them feel bad to use.
>>97738585You don't understand. With how lethal most stuff was in 1.0 the problem used to be that games came down to who got to go first. If units on both sides are equally capable of annihilating one other, those that get to pull the trigger first will win most of the time. First turn advantage was a huge issue back in the day. Even with an infantry heavy army, considered one of the worst armies back then, you could pull off a win when you got first turn.
>>97738585"artillery should feel like a nightmare to infantry!"Cool, what about the space marine power fantasy of being unstoppable gods of war that march on through hails of fire to get the job done? "magnus blowing up tanks is so cool and fits his power fantasy!" And what about the power fantasy of the tank as a tank? As unstoppable engines of war that grind everything down in their path?EVERY unit has a power fantasy associated with it, even militia have that dream of "and then they hold against impossible odds and carry the day" that every guard player has stiffies about. This isnt a reason to just embrace power fantasy, its the reason you cant. You cannot have every unit be as OP as they are in their wildest dreams, it does not work, power is relative. This is why you need to instead try and make a "balanced" game, because that way you have as many units perform "more or less as they should", rather than 99% of things feeling bad because 1% of things get to play functional calvinball. Its not perfect, units are not always balanced in ways that intuitively fits in with their power fantasy, but it is the best way to handle things because in a war game the power fantasies are fundamentally opposed and adversarial. The marine players power fantasy is of his elite "best of the best" warriors bringing down the enemy knights through superior skill, cunning and weaponry. The knight power fantasy is of unstoppable god machines stepping on all the little helpless people. So who gets to have their power fantasy? Thats where the "game" part of "tabletop wargame" comes in and they play it out and have a narrative and fantasy emerge.
>>97738615Im not talking necessarily about "win%" as much as "gamefeel". In an edition where marine murdering blasts are common and powerful, marines cease to "feel" like space marines. Their own power fantasy of durability and eliteness does not get fulfilled. They feel bad for the sake of making another unit feel good.
