>>97729534>I'm not the type of person who tries to involve the unsuspecting into a boardgame to do something with your hands while you converse. The weather is nice today and did you see how far that man kicked that ball yesterday? Isn't it terrible how that mean bad man said that bad thing last week? I say this while I hold my hands stiffly at my sides. Oh you're playing a game either way. You just didn't choose it.
>>97729658What's the Fate or w/e it's called in Arcs that people said is impossible? I have a campaign with Act 1 done, wonder if it's in play.
>>97729840not impossible, just the most difficult, the Believer. Doesn't get special powers until he saturates the deck with his special sauce cards, needs the luck of the gods or some very good early trades to saturate the deck with special sauce cards, and oh did i mention you need to control planets of the same suit as the court cards if you wanna add the faithful cards to them? And that's just his Act 1, if he goes into act 2 it gets worse. It's not impossible, but if you see you can't do it you should prepare to change fates, getting extra action pips on the wild suit cards is good for most B and C fates.
>>97729896Oh yeah, it's in play. Cool. I think the guy got 3 cards out.
>>97729658Dominance victory in root
>>97729463I agree that most of those old games are bad. Or boring. I mean I'm 44 so I get it. Our idea of a fun game at a birthday party when I was a kid was seeing which cousin could chuck literal horse shit the farthest. I don't think people play modern games because they're better though. There are a lot of top tier modern games but we haven't had a hundred years to filter out the shitty ones yet. I'm honestly shocked how quick I've filtered most out of my collection entirely and replaced with a deck of cards. I do find it easier to get people excited about a new mystery box though. I'm not going to be inviting my friends over for Cribbage but we did 40 shitty evenings of Gloomhaven. The most popular game here is still Crokinole. I guess all I'm saying is that the box, theme, and tokens are doing a lot of heavy lifting here. It's not because the games are great.
Played AFFO for the first time in the past few days and while I really like the interplay between worker placement and the tetris-y unlocks on your home board(s) the occupations are kind of ruining games for me. We roll up and one guy gets "if you do extremely specific action X get some beans" whereas another guy is basically getting some silver or a blue tile or a bonus action every round. For something you start the game with they seem really variable. It doesn't feel like there's an advantage if you draw shit occupations and try to play more minor actions instead of hitting a 4 tile either, especially not with the xpac where there's an extra row of super final actions.
>>97729896You basically take the believer to fuck with the deck on the assumption you're gonna pivot out, and if you get lucky you can stick with it.
>>977296584 mermaids in Sea Salt & Paper
This is so fucking terrible. Feels like a design from the 90s. I really dont understand how this is so highly rated.
Guerilla Generation arrived. I wasn't expecting a different rulebook for each of the four scenarios but that's cool. For a 1v1 game this is a lot of stuff
>>97730759What don't you like about it?
Slay the Spire: The Board Game or Slay the Spire 2?
>>97731058why not both?video games are free and board games are free via TTS
>>97731058The board game doesn't REALLY offer anything over the video game. It's interesting to see how some of the stuff is implemented and try each character once, that's about it.
What are some recent and upcoming releases you are excited for or at least interested in?

>>97730759I don't think it's terrible but it's certainly not elegant. The main problem I have with it is that by the time we get around to replaying it we forget what the tech tiles do and have to look them up in the book every round. The game feels like it should be a light game but it plays like a clunky middle weight. If that makes sense? It does a lot of neat things that many other games simply seem to do better now. The tile estate building in particular is similar to so many games that just feel a lot more enjoyable to play. The dice could be removed entirely and you could still inject enough variety by shuffling up some tiles. The turns could be a lot faster. I don't think I'd recommend it to anybody these days but I've played much worse games.
It's been a while.Request the Root babe you want drawn.
>>97731240Star Trek Captain's Chair - To Boldly Go. Only because I haven't been able to get a copy of the original game yet. I'm deeply curious about playing it. Though to be honest I've been a little turned off by how lengthy and fiddly the game looks based on watching videos. I need more time to consider it and see what other people are saying about the new box.

>>97731316No.
>>97729658I roped two objectively attractive girls into playing several heavy games with me. I have now turned them into cardboard addicts.
I've been replaying a lot of our old games before I get rid of them for good. It's been a bit shocking. The Fox in the Forest kind of sucks. The core game is fine. The scoring for trick taking is brilliant because. The powers on the cards suck. I actively hate them. I'm just going to make my own version. Fairy Tale was okay. The scoring kind of drags because the game plays so fast. Res Arcana. Meh. Intend on getting Watergate and Calico replayed soon. Calico is ridiculously well designed but not sure I care much about quilts with cats sitting on them.
>>97731254It's good. I like how buying capabilities in the beginning makes things variable, but the same thing makes it hard for new players to catch on, and sometimes it feels like most of the interesting decisions are during set up and then you just watch it play out. It's probably not worth getting unless you have someone who will commit to playing it several times. It often plays under an hour. The "if you can't agree who won, just keep arguing about it" passage in the rulebook is maybe the best Eklund tier horseshit I've ever read. I would say Daesh wins in 80% of my games.
Rolled 5, 5 = 10 (2d6).

>>97730759>>97731299I want to call you wrong and stupid in that order, CoB is one of my all time favorites, buuuuut I'm probably biased. I like dice manipulation and working the hard side of the map (you forgot maps are imbalanced) but I agree if I got it out tomorrow I'd have a hard time deciphering everything and while it's a good step away from catan I can't say it's aged horribly well.If you want dice fun try space base, it's like machi koro but good. It does blow up with the expansions into stupid territory. While we're on the subject what other games like Space Base are there?
>>97731585Roll for the Galaxy is the only game that comes to mind. You find yourself looking at the chart for the dice a lot. You're building a tableau that is heavily influenced by your dice rolls. Your opponent's dice rolls matter less because it's more about predicting what phases they might be picking. You end up manipulating the dice rolls so much that it doesn't feel like you're just playing the bell curve like in Machi Koro though.

Crazy that there's no mainstream furry boardgame so all the degenerates have to pile on Root and Everdell, when you really think about it.
>>97733211It's becoming dangerously mainstream, what with all the identity politics in everything fewer and fewer publishers dare to put out a game depicting humans that doesn't look like a box of m&ms. I mean pic related is definitely catering to furfags

>>97733124You do realize that most crowdfunded games also get retail releases, right?
>>97733511>mostNah anon. Few (the most popular ones) get an actual retail release. Some get a pseudo release where the publisher sells off remaining copies after KS dropouts or their deliberate overproduction they ordered to get productions costs down. The smaller crowdfunding games rarely do outside of "back this tier if you are a LGS" games

>>97733886Never have been, but what I heard and saw hasn't really encouraged me. Not afraid of crowds, but it just looks like the opposite of the comfy boardgaming atmosphere I appreciate.Plus, allegedly testing a game at a con means playing 10 minutes teach-as-you go which is entirely inadequate. But that might just be the case with vendor-focussed cons
>>97733922>>97734198I've had really good experiences playtesting at cons, that's really fun because the games are often interesting and the demonstrator is usually the designer. Actual vendor demos, yeah, pretty lame: usually just 2-3 rounds and pack up for the next guy.

>>97730629•Clue is just strait guessing. •Cryptid is much better moderated guessing. (New info stays on the board)•There's no guessing in Kronologic. Player turns are like 30-45 seconds each, and every player gets info. Theres no moving around a board.•Clue can be replayed due to the arbitrary setup.•Cryptid has 100+ setups for specific player numbers (3-6?). It also has a webpage for faster setup.•Kronologic only has so many scenarios per box, for any number of players (15 scenarios i think? 3 boxes I know of)•Base Clue never gets harder. •Cryptid has a hard mode, using a NOT modifier.•Kronologic each scenario gets harder, the scenarios don't even ask for the same "discovery" win condition.Kill Dr.Lucky is reverse clue. You're trying to kill the victim. No deduction, just simple card play and games of chicken.
>>97734493Believer's starting card gives you +1 action on the Faithful cards even if you fail Believer's objective and take a new fate, and the Faithful cards can be used for basically any action/ambition declaration which eases the luck-based elements that some B and C fates have with needing to declate certain ambitions and requiring a lot of combat or whatever.Completing the objective upgrades the faithful cards from a wildcard into a whole another minigame with it being important which side you use (Wisdon for defencive actions or Zeal for the aggressive ones) as the Believer (and later on anyone who can steal his pet/prophet from him) decides which half is the active one whenver Edicts resolve.
>>97733187>>97733223The furry-less times are never coming back unfortunately and it's one of the reasons why I refuse to play Dungeons & Dragons anymore. >>97733151I agree, but it's more of a problem here because the game's so front loaded. If you play Paths of Glory for the first time, you do some stupid stuff, see why it was dumb, and by the end you have a better handle on it and you want to play again. In Nineveh you might choose speedboats, extra tanks, and UN observers because you don't know how to evaluate capabilities, see why that was dumb on the first turn, and have no way to change things or act on it until the next game. It's more frustrating for a first timer than other way more complicated games.

>>97734660The behavior that makes furries insufferable is present in the people who play boardgames and rpg's to begin with.I played pleanty of those pre-furry d&d games and found them horrible. Edgy Murderhobos, railroading DM's, DM's who can't into sane characters, optimizers, MTG whales, sick fetish inserters, and rancid bath-avoiders all are autisticly ignoring reality substituting another, and go past furries all the time. Anthropomorphs have existed without the fetish stuff, in rpgs and boardgames forever. Furries are just an easy "other" target, and I think you are imagining good old days that don't exist, and conveniently ignoring the overlap.
Anon out here >>97737733 running damage control for Root.
>>97737746Rent free.I was mainly talking about rpg's. Root doesn't even register as furry. Especially the later decks, they're so hyper specific. Is stock trading just a push your luck/gambling game just and adult themed gambling/push your luck game? Now I know you're tempted to answer immediately but think about it for a momemt. >looking forward to a long boardgaming session on saturday all week>2/3 have to cancel because of illnessesI really, really dislike this feeling
I noticed I'm the only one teaching to other first timers how to actually play the game (which means strategies, concepts and why they should do this instead of that) and usually lose as a consequence meanwhile everyone else simply explains the rules and then go seal clubbing on the newbsAm I retarded for doing that?
>>97744676You are not retarded.Somes people like clubbing seals. The prestige is to teach, cripple the seal clubbers, and get a newb to win.Alternatively work on one newb till they can club the seal clubbers.
>>97744676No, you are doing it the proper way. Or rather near what I consider to be best: let players find out stuff and make mistakes, but do provide the odd "yeah this path is going to be pretty hard to make work", "don't think you can win that fight" etc to not make them accidentally fuck up their whole game and passively sit through it.I do so because it's my preference as well to explore a game largely by myself, but people are different. I'm not handholding someone through an entire game, though. "what should I do?" 10 turns in a row isn't fun for anyone
>>97744676I'm good at teaching people how to play a game but I'm bad at games. So I can get them to understand how everything works quickly but I usually won't beat them anyway because I'm retarded.

It's rewarding for other reasons. My favorite games are all efficiency puzzles where I'm competing against myself or the system itself. Game is such a broad term it's nearly useless. If you said, board game, then we'd be closer to an answer.
>>97744676I sometimes mix in strategy tips with the rules and then have to clarify which is which and that i think just muddies up the teach. Even if you're retarded, you are not alone.

This game is pretty good.
>>97740830but catan is fucking terrible. "you can trade" is not balance
>>97743628>you've decided you're taking a full year of not playing any board gamesmy reason for stopping board games for a year+ eschewed any desire to play board games in it's very nature. in other words it's stupid to not play board games if you want to, literally not wanting to is the only reason to not play.
>>97731058tough call, I think the board game is more enjoyable to play as cards instead of clicking excessively but it only offers - at best - 2 playthroughs of novelty until it becomes the exact game you've already played for 1/10th the priceit's almost too good at replicating the original
Wait so should I get the Slay the Spire I & II (alpha) on steam for $28? I played a lot of paperback on steam and got really burnt out on it but didn't realize StS was from a boardgame.
>>97746043yes for sureSlay the Spire was a video game first. But it was basically a video game version of a (non-existent) board game with more math than you'd normally be able to do. Then they made a board game. Now the 2nd video game is in early access.
>>97746043STS was a videogame but got a boardgame that rebalanced the game and added cooperative play and the ability to use other classes' cards. STS2 is also a videogame made with multiplayer built in but idk how it works because i have no friends to play STS2 with
>>97746075Og STS would never be a boardgame due to quite high random card generation. In fact the boardgame cut off all those kind of builds
>>97731058I feel like the only anon getting a novel experience from playing the boardgame. The balance is fairly different with the dice, adjusted values, mechanics, cards and co-op even though it has the exact same coating.
>>97745999Catan's great until your luck changes, but I like it enough to own it
>>97745999The main flaws of catan are that it is too frontloaded, the village placements might be the most important decision, and the fact that you can get eliminated early. Those could be fine, but it really sucks because the games can go pretty long. Maybe an experienced group can bust out games really quickly, and it can be fun. But often you end up with miserable slogs. So when it is good, its awesome. When it is not good, its fucking awful.

They did change the font though and that’s extremely gay. That said, I’ve always loved mage knight, so I’ll try it out regardless.

Regardless of theme or setting, I don't like it when they use a symbol/icon for victory points that isn't pic related. It's just too universal and perfect.
>>97748484Speaking of laurels, I gave Zoo Vadis another shot after a long while. As a casual/party game with normgroids it's actually pretty good.
>>97748484I agree but don't mind if games use something a bit different. I do hate it when a game is effectively themeless and calls VP "Prestiege points" or similar in a vain attempt to induce theme via nominclature. That doesn't work in all but the most thematic games, otherwise the components get called the most instinctive name. Noone calls SidCon resources or Res Arcana by its proper name, for example. I mean he will look in a draw bag, pinch his own pieces and then draw. it's insane and it makes playing with him horrible. and don't get me started on the rules "misinterpritations". you have to constantly watch him and every thing he does and he just acts confused if you try to call him out. >>97761655>And also, board games are less complex than videogamesBoth true and not. It's an interesting topic. Videogames (usually) have way more content and rules, but by automatically enforcing them and putting in guided tutorials (few videogames really have real tutorial levels anymore, probably because people are beyond impatient) it becomes kinda easy again. Enforced rules and learning by mistakes works for far more people than upront teach, to my great dismay.
>>97761858I agree with him, most boardgames rely on rules obfuscating the real complexity plus little playtime and would crumble under the same hours videogames offer

I think this'll boil down to a different definition of what "complexity" even means.>(...) would crumble under the same hours videogames offerI forgot, but I do agree. >>97767502It's even worse than that - I always get a shitty hand to start off with, can't do shit and get fucked every time.Every.Single.Time.Pretty much everyone else I've ever played Imperial Settlers gets it, but I don't. And that's fine, but I'm still playing a game that I find to be painfully dull.
I feel like playing slay to spire to a20 immensely improved my enjoyment of card games, now I always play flexible and roll with what my opening hand gives me
Never heard anything about feya's swamp post-essen, has a verdict been reached and I haven't noticed? Can't imagine there'd be nothing out there even if it was shit, it's still an ostetag game
>>97769104It's a re-implementation of an unpopular game so it should be no surprise that it's unpopular.
>>97768615It depends on how experienced the players are and what difficulty you're planning on playing. In my experience Spirit Island is fucking terrible with weak players (in particular sore losers) if you don't carry them. I'd probably go with Fangs as long as you're playing with the Events deck myself.
>>97765588Radlands. Have you tried the official (1.2/2.0) rule? They removed self-restoring which caused endgame problems like you've described.
>>97768978This is going to sound lame, but I feel like playing a ton of games in general over my lifetime (both board games and video games) has led to me enjoying card games a lot more than most people. I used to think I wanted to play heavy board games but then I started to notice mechanics more and more. It was like putting on the sunglasses from They Live. I couldn't unsee mechanics. I started to really get into breaking games down and even designing my own. That's when Magic: The Gathering started to interest me after avoiding it all these years. There are so many mechanics that have been explored in that game it's boggling. You start to notice them in other games that came after too. Then you see how even some of those mechanics were explored in some traditional card game from a few hundred years ago. You go deep enough down the rabbit-hole you start to notice that a lot of modern board games are just board game versions of the old idea of two player patience. Or that Scopa has alternate victory point paths. Or that Spider is a state machine puzzle comparable to modern co-op or solo design. Or that Piquet compresses different game genres into one tight game because you have bluffing, drafting, hand management, trick taking, hidden information, set collection, a shared market, random setup, and a fairly complex game phase structure that predates modern board games. Cuttle has multi-purpose cards being used in three different ways and it just works. Your 8 of Spades can be a point card, a point removal card, or a pair of X-ray goggles to see what your opponent is doing. Cards are probably the single most flexible game component. Then you add in the fact that you can literally print rules on the cards themselves and the combinatorial possibilities explode into the infinite. That's a long ramble to say that yes I am obsessed with playing cards.
>>97768978I've always done this, while my dad always learns the cards and then sits and waits the whole game for that one killer card or card combo not really doing anything with what he's got because of some power card he has 1/500 chance of drawing. he's like that in all games really, like he has specific buildings or upgrades or combos set in his mind before the game even starts. it boggles my mind.
>>97766283>>97766880when they have a pair of aces and an uno reverse on top of the 105 cards they are probably cheating.

>>97770053Funny enough despite all my traveling I've never had an asian friend in the group, and I lived in California for most of my life.Beaners and honkies in my group and the token black guy so we can get a fair N word pass.
I'm putting together my convention haul for weekend gaming. Help me cut the team so I'm not hauling 20 games of which I play 3.On the team (4 spots remaining)>Dune Uprising>Guards of Atlantis 2>Ark Nova>Hansa TeutonicaOn the bench>Red Cathedral>Grand Austria Hotel>Revive>Age of Innovation>Hegemony>Pax Ren>Cosmic Encounter>Rising Sun>The Estates>Tigris and Euphrates>Old King's Crown>Marco Polo>Cosmic Frog
>>97770497Can't help you cut because I'm not you. What I can say is that I have no idea what people see in Cosmic encounter amd tranny frog. Age of innovation is a downgrade from GP in my opinion (lest you are a hardcore tournament player). GAH never felt anything more than okish and even for a Clemens Franz enjoyer such as me the art is...of questionable quality. Revive felt like standard euroslop to me, but some people really liked it.And how are you getting the estates for less than your kidney?
>>97770535It's just a fun exercise of popular opinion. Cosmics are fun end of the night Ameritrash that work with lots of players. I bought my copy of Frog before he decided to become a she, and even so the production is top notch and it plays well as a team game. AoI has build-a-bear faction drafting which I find more appealing then GP meta builds. Estates was a $30 flea market pickup. I'll freely admit I lucked out on that one.
>>97770133>I lived in California for most of my lifeI'm so sorry to hear that anon.
>Paul grogan talking about how he has to take a week off just to play the games he lovesIs there anyone on earth that actually gets to play as much of their games as they want? Is having a neet boardgame group the ultimate power flex?
>>97770602>I bought my copy of Frog before he decided to become a sheWHO. GIVES. A. FUCK.>>97770869t. guy from Ohio who doesn't go to "the big city" because it's scaryfuck you fucking american cunts who can't talk about board games without injecting politics
>>97770905If I ever trip over millions of dollars I'd love to open my own shop and host events so I could play any night I wanted without having to coordinate with other people's schedules.
>>97770980What the fuck anon>>97771099Man, I don't even daydream about that because playing with strangers was never that great an experience. Don't mind it, but TRVU LVDO is playing with friends
>>97769827In my experience, even with interested competent players, it's a boring set collection accounting spreadsheet. It doesn't hurt that it was pitched as "kill whitey" to an all white group.

>>97768615You should try playing a better game.>a-at least the gameplay is good"No!" The gameplay is dreadful; the game was terrible. As I played, I noticed that every time a minor power was played, the player did it for the symbols instead of an interesting effect.I began marking on the back of an envelope every time a card was played for symbols only. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Reuss' mind is so governed by bland effects and thinly veiled set collection that he has no other style of gameplay. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Spirit Island by the same Kenneth Johnson. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these manchildren are playing Spirit Island at 31 or 32, then when they get older they will go on to play Phase 10." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you play "Spirit Island" you are, in fact, trained to play Phase 10.
