If you intend to do a very opaque basecoat in dark colors, black or really any color is fine. if you intend to use light colors, go with white for improved coverage. If the paint for your base layer is translucent and gets tinted by the primer below, question if greyscale is even what you want (for example, many landscape painters opt for umber, sienna, yellow-orchre). I think one of the worst pushed painting advise was inks over zenithal (top down) highlighting of white over black. It killed the chroma in the very translucent ink, revealing the preshade but making the model look dreary and desaturated. Doing it over colored primers would have stopped a lot of bland minis.

They're all gonna be summoning the same Daemon guys, which is a bad thing.We have to fix Daemons first because we can't just can the entire decades of Chaos Daemon/God art, we can only diversify and expand on it. And honestly making Daemons less human-like would be a good first step because there sure are a lot of aliens that are more alien-looking than Daemons, which really undermines the Daemonwank fluff of how they're supposed to be so weird & unreal. Or just ease on that sorta fluff too and canonize that Daemons are more humanlike due to humans being so widespread, that kind of works.
