Is Strixhaven just 1 giant school world or do we just ignore the actual plane to gocis on 1 building?
Like even Kaladesh didn't just focus on the 1 city

every plane is just a theme park anon
Even EoE being a vast universe features galaxy sized dragons that are 4/5 in stat

There's more on Arcavios than just Strixhaven. But the dragons decided that non-dragons were dangerously retarded and had to be given proper education, so a lot of the civilization on the plane (or at least the one continent that's been mapped) seems to ultimately revolve around making Strixhaven run. Basically it's a giant tardwrangling operation.

>How we feel about "Prepared"?

For what I got, it's just an activated ability but instead of being an ability is a spell on the stack (can now be esaily countered) but they are supposed to be OP reserved list spells. Also, each creature is supposed to have sone bullshit trigger to get prepared outside when it enters and you can't stack multiple prepares on it.

Sound like another begginers trap mechanic

People have been complaining that creatures are now just sorceries with bodies, this really takes the cake by literally making them instants/sorceries with bodies AND abilities.

Monk anon here.

Honestly, it's the flavor. You have incredibly powerful mages, dragons, and cosmic horrors in this game, and then you have a rhino in robes who is seeking enlightenment, or some dude who is just going to punch them directly in the face. The ascetic martial-arts aesthetic is near and dear to my soul, and also aligns with other shit in my life.

Mechanically, monks used to just be clerics. I well and truly started to care in CHK, which was fucking rad. Humble budoka is one of my favorite cards. "Local man gets buff and can't be fucked with." Dosan is cool. Iwamori, while powercrept, into irrelevance, is fucking awesome. The story flavor of having faith in gods that are killing you was tragic and cool. I still have my mono green monk deck from kamigawa block. Bad ass dudes, getting enlightened, and kicking heads off.

What bugged me though was a) monks had no cohesive identity, and b) there was no monk lord. Plenty of fucking elves give each other +1/+1. Merfolk. Goblins. Soldiers. Clerics. But not monks. Why, I pondered?

And thus my autism was born.

The rhox monks were cool, but now monks were about gaining life (a space clerics seem to own). No lord. Lone missionary, serra ascendant. More lifegain. Transcendent Master is a cleric instead of a monk, weird and pisses me off.

Zedruu precon comes out; on the one hand I fucking love the flavor. Lifegain again, for giving people your stuff. But...he's not a monk lord. A few more lifegain monks come out. No lord.

Serene master is printed and I fucking love it. What a cool flavor. More lifegain cat monks. We're still knockoff clerics with no lord. My monogreen monk deck has not been added to in ages.

Then Khans dropped. To be continued.

Why the fuck would they do it like that when they've shown they have no issue whatsoever retconning types?

Pt. 2

Kung fu monks. On the one hand, I fucking loved stupid shit like flying crane technique. But monks were rebranded to fucking prowess. Why are monks charged up by spell slinging? Kamigawa monks just weren't to be fucked with and would beat you down, why does this kung fu grandma (cringe) care if I shoot someone with a lightning bolt. Shu yun is kinda cool I guess, but the "main" monk is Michele Yeoh who just helps you cast spells? Lame. AND WHERE THE FUCK IS A MONK LORD?

Monastery mentor is a step in the right direction though. Every annoying tribal deck makes tokens of its tribe. I figure, well, surely later on this khans block we'll get a monk lord. Also, planeswalkers have been overwhelmingly bullshit, so a monk planeswalker would be cool.

But guess what? Fate's story fucked everything up so the third fucking set is about dragons now. NO. MONK. LORD. Why? WHY? And the monk planeswalker? Just a fucking glorified wizard. Nothing monk-like about them. Jaya is printed, a disgusting grandmother mage that makes prowess monks.

The more I look the more I notice. A few monks are printed for commander. No monk lord.

Forgotten realms is getting printed, they have monks! No monk lord, and also the monks are shit, and the grandmaster of flowers is another fucking dragon in disguise or something.

We go back to kamigawa. Surely, SURELY, this will be my time. I've been waiting twenty years, after all.

Nope, got cucked again. All the monks are shit, and no monk lord.

Baldurs gate? Some commander usable cards, but still no monk lord.

I didn't truly mindbreak until brothers war. This has The Archimandrite, one of the ugliest cards of all time; it buffs monks...and advisors, butlers, janitors, and losers. The card itself is a fucking advisor, not a monk. The closest thing to a monk lord, the champion of their tribe that embodies their spirit, and monks are an afterthought to advisors. Fucking advisors.

TBC
>>
Bring back upkeep costs. That alone would solve so many balancing issues.
>>
>>97781148
Universes within monk? He buffs reach...but isn't a monk lord. Fucking reach, something no monks have.

MoM? Barely any monks. Narset, prowesslord. Fuck me I hate prowess. So if I want to build around the Monk mascot, I have to make a prowess deck? And include fucking otter wizards, something that isn't a fucking monk? Fuck you.

In all this time, even on monk planes, there are barely any fucking monks. Even if I have to shovel dog shit in my mouth and eat prowess, I can barely put together a good monk deck. Where are all the monks? AND WHERE IS THE MONK LORD?

Dragonstorm. Back to tarkir. Monk land, albeit fucking prowess monks. There are one or two decent monks, flamehold grappler is neat. NO MONK LORD. Also now prowess is shittier for no reason.

It takes universes beyond, of all things, to bring me back. They have monks in that universe, after all. It is here of all places that monks at last return to a somewhat cool form. Combat, not spellslinging. Tifa Martial Artist is a spiritual reawakening. No monk lord, but at least monks are back on track. Surely a monk lord, or cohesive monk identity, will come soon.

Avatar drops, a set about martial arts and enlightenment. 4 monks. 3 are absolute shit, and 1 is a weird combo piece. NO. MONK. LORD.

Lorwyn had cool creature type support. Maybe? NO. FUCK ME.

TMNT was about martial arts and mentorship, mayb- NO MONKS AT ALL.

Strixhaven had ONE monk on the plane, mayb- FUCK YOU

Well Marv-NO

MONK

I pray daily for my tribe. We need good cards. We need better mechanics than fucking prowess. WE NEED A MONK LORD.

I cannot believe there are people bitching because we DIDN'T get a card that does everything for you and you actually have to rub two brain cells together to build a monk deck that can do the monk things (multiple spells with Eisha and pump with Narset and Shiko). Genuinely pathetic.

this
i've made peasant tribal and noble tribal in EDH, then one that utilizes both of them. both of these types have far worse support and none of them needed a commander with the creature type in their rules text. Some guy in /edhg/ was bitching about there being no skeleton lords in the same vein as this, and I was able to find like 6-8 commanders that all work well with the colors and common abilities of skeletons without neededing to be one itself or reference them in its rules text
>>
>>97781287
Other than the fact I hope you die of cancer, that's not what I'm asking for. A monk that mentions or benefits other monks. THAT is what I'm looking for.

Elsha and narset to make a prowess deck? There's no reason not to include all the nonmonk prowess faggots. Also I refute prowess as the monk mechanic as a premise, fuck that spellslinging wizard bullshit.

A monk lord, however, incentivizes monks instead of a better creature. It can give people a reason to play jukai messenger. It is a sad byproduct that every card is its own perpetual motion machine by design, but at the end of the day, WHERE IS THE MONK LORD?

You are genuinely embarrassing. That is a shit design. Fuck you. A good lord design needs you to reward you for doing the things you tribe wants you to do. Pic related rewards you for putting creatures in the board that weren't cast; ninjutsu works, but so does Unearth. Or reanimation. Or persist/undying. It's open ended while supporting its tribe.

Eisha does this; she provides you with a payoff (monks) for doing the things monks want you to do (cast a flurry of spells). If she was "all monks have +1/+1 for every spell you cast this turn" she would be a shit design. I'm sorry you're retarded. It's terminal.
>>
>>97781400
Nah he's right about prowess, that's a mechanic clearly intended for wizards, why would a monk care about casting spells?
>>
>>97781388
The economic and technological state of Japan in the 80s HEAVILY influenced cyberpunk literature at the time. Of Japan's influence on the genre, William Gibson said, "Modern Japan simply was cyberpunk." It's often set in urbanized, artificial landscapes, and "city lights, receding" was used by Gibson as one of the genre's first metaphors for cyberspace and virtual reality.

Cyberpunk is an extrapolation of late Cold War era anxieties: the role of technology in our lives, the slow collapse of the environment, crass consumerism, and the loss of the American economic powerhouse.

Japan was seen as the next big economic superpower and many of the old economic doomsday scenarios involved zaibatsus buying out America. Do you think they picked the name "Arasaka" for the evil megacorp in Cyberpunk for funsies?

yes but no, Lo and Li is unusable dogshit and how I realized I should be looking for mechanical cohesion rather than just searching for creature types in rules text. By considering what the majority of worthwhile nobles actually do, the natural fits for a lord role naturally arise more easily

EVERYTHING is a spell in Magic, you dumbass. Shouting hard? Spell. Martial arts technique? Spell. Punching someone in the face? Spell. Tactical manuever? Spell. Stabbing someone? Spell. Spells are how Magic represents DOING THINGS.

The fantasy of monks is that they know martial techniques that directly translate into supernatural physical prowess, that is literally their thing and even their real-life mystique has always been connected to supposed physical supernatural abilities gained by wisdom and knowledge; from Sanzang's flesh being able to give incredible benefits owing to his wisdom in Journey to the West, to the mysticism associated with Shaolin monks in pop culture, to the frequent stories in Asia of them attaining levitation, immortality, astral projection, regeneration and standing in the cold winds of a mountain peak without dying of hypothermia.

I know I'm walking into a conversation midstream, but once you have that commander, there's no reason to use the nobles. You should be using the best cards that do whatever it is your Commander is supporting, which will likely not be nobles.

You are using game mechanics to justify flavor, everything being a spell is so all cards can interact with each other in a sensible way. Instant Ramen is not a fucking spell flavor-wise, that's just how the game mechanics rule it (you could perhaps argue summoning it is). Either way, the monks with prowess make no distinction, they don't buff from spells targeting them which would make more sense, no, you can just cast a draw spell, or a fireball, or hell, summon a fucking skateboard and BOOM they're buffed.
>>
>>97781548
Wrong. Monks are about training, discipline, and enlightenment (which is not a function of knowledge). Someone who studies a lot, and likes seeing a lot of spells happen IS CALLED A WIZARD.

Mechanics that would make sense for a monk:

Technique (Whenever this creature blocks or becomes blocked by a creature with greater power, [Effect].)

Stance. At the beginning of combat, choose a Stance for this creature until end of turn. You could choose between something like Mantis Form (First Strike and Deathtouch), Iron Shirt (Hexproof and Indestructible, but can't attack), or Tiger Form (+2/+0 and Trample).

At the beginning of your end step, if this creature attacked or blocked this turn, put a +1/+1 counter on it. Remove a +1/+1 counter, [effect]. Removing a threat, giving unblockable, or a temporary large buff (budoka pupil but not shit).
>>
>>97781584
And you're allowed certain wizards to do that. Slickshot Show-Off, for example. It's not something every wizard does, whereas all eastern-styled monks channel qi and get buff.
>>
>>97781561
Why would you do that if the original goal was "I want to play Noble tribal"?
You're choosing the commander to support the creatures in the 99, not the other way around. Sure, it'll never be stronger than a theme deck, but that's assumed when you pick a shitter tribe.
>>
>>97781643
Regardless of how you cut it, the monk mechanic boils down to: having lots of knowledge and using that knowledge translates into superhuman physical abilities. That's what monks are. That's what a fantasy monk is. You spend 50 years studying buddhism and the 499 forms of the Giga-Buddha Explode-All-Your-Organs Fist and now you can benchpress a mountain and split rivers with your fists.

>>97781579

>>97781671
Way too vague, "translate knowledge into power" is what literally everything does. Monks are always themed around training and meditation, not learning shit from books. It's weak flavor and I don't blame Monkanon for being disappointed with it. Ironically I think even this new prepared would be better suited for them. Spells actually attached to the card as supernatural "feats", but they have to prep for it.
For the record I like prowess as a mechanic, I just think they could have done something cooler for Monks. It's far more flavorful a mechanic on Sokka, Tenacious Tactician than any monk.

>Way too vague, "translate knowledge into power" is what literally everything does
Translate knowledge into PHYSICAL power. Casting spells makes the creature's BODY better, improves their PHYSIQUE. Like how flowing chi through your body makes you capable of breaking a wall with your bare hands.

To monks, if you became enlightened, you'd actually become a fucking god. You'd fly. Arrows would break against your skin. You can fast in -20 C° with a shawl draped over your body and feel nothing for it. Wisdom and knowledge translate immediately into your body becoming better, faster, stronger.
>>
>>97781663
>but that's assumed when you pick a shitter tribe.

>>
>>97781739
Where the fuck do you get "knowledge" from? Reciting the same sutras over and over isn't studying. They dont just recite dragon fist and do it. They train one kick a thousand times. Int =/= Fth. They channel internal energy, if anything, for those feats, not external spell energy, but even going along with your inherently incorrect argument prowess still sucks. Heroic would be a better argument, not Prowess.
>>
>>97781768

recurring 0 cost artifacts is easy and would create a huge army very quickly especially with urza's saga.
>>
>>97781739
But you're not "attaining enlightenment" when you cast your fireball or summon dinosaur tokens, you're casting traditional wizard spells and getting a side benefit due to prowess. This would make perfect sense if they got buffs from specific spells that draw cards (the magic equivalent of gaining knowledge) for example, but it has no restrictions that do that. Nothing even attempting any sort of flavor.
>>
>>97781754
that's not going to be fixed by adding a generically good lord. there are a very limited number of actually playable tribes, and all of them reached that status primarily by having a critical saturation of creatures over many man years.
>>
>>97781800
>But you're not "attaining enlightenment" when you cast your fireball or summon dinosaur tokens, you're casting traditional wizard spells and getting a side benefit due to prowess.
And not much benefit, because monks don't want you to do that. They want you to cast 4 Opts in a row. The mechanic works well with cantrips, pump and draw spells, and poorly with summoning spells or big fireballs. I see no issue here.

>Back to Lluwen, leading the group out, except the group looks REALLY upset for some reason
>Kirol asks if anybody else is feeling something in their chest, like something trying to tear itself out of them
>Seems everybody but Lluwen is feeling that in fact
>This leads to an argument between Kirol and Lluwen for a bit, before Suki interrupts, pointing out the Lumarets have gone hiding
>Kirol then brings up creatures on Arcavios that feed on negative emotions, daemogoths
>Aaand there one is, laughing at them and using magic to crush them within the tunnel
>Lluwen nearly gets pulled into the earth, but the rest of the gang helps to try and pull him free, albeit unsuccessfully
>Just before Lluwen is lost, Professor Fel's voice rings out, talking to the daemogoth, who's familar with him apparently, asking if Dellian's back to make 'that deal' with it
>Dellian quickly makes short work of the daemogoth via plant magic growing inside of it
>Lluwen asks Dellian what the thing was on about, he dismisses it, saying it's ridiculous he'd make a deal with something that has nothing to offer
>They all ask why Fel's here, he says he's trying to find a way to fulfil a promise he made, one that runs deep in his soul
>Tam speaks up, telling all, because Jadzi told her, apparently, that he'd been planning to study the archaics, trying to do something with time to save a woman he loved
>Fel doesn't respond, and changes subject to the huge archaic that has Jadzi
>Lluwen speaks up about the encounter he had with the archaics a while back, specifically that they were gathered around a snarl
>That gets Fel to go "oh shit", because there aren't in snarls in Titan's Grave, or shouldn't be
>So the gang all go to that place
>To Chandra and Ajani, arguing about not talking to each other basically
>Ajani at least asks what she thinks Jace's plan IS
>>
>>97782370
>She says she thinks he's trying to 'incarnate' into that massive archaic, for some reason, because she thinks she's got some of his memories in her head now
>Ajani then at least goes "...Okay, but are you SURE Jace has gone as bad as you think? Maybe him knowing the Multiverse's history via an archaic wouldn't be that bad"
>Chandra retorts about how she was found after his attack back on Avishkar, which shuts him up
>Ajani eventually just asks how he can help, she says he can help her find the archaic and kill it before Jace can use it
>Ajani at least tries to give her a brief ultimatum that if it looks like she IS wrong, she'll at least stop and think before blasting
>She doesn't really agree, but they carry on regardless, Chandra seething about not blowing up Jace when she had the chance

WotC bases the classes on what it is called not on an archetype shared between cards.

Idk, maybe the Blex deck would want this, but this definitely seems more like something you'd either want Tevel for or something you'd want for mememander. Cub would definitely rather run Craterhoof over this. I guess it could be playable with Avenger of the Fallen if self-mill gets better, but I don't see us getting anything better than Overlord of the Balemurk anytime soon. Elementary school math says "an even number is a number that is divisible by 2 that yields no remainder". This is because they only deal with positive integers (whole numbers I think is the name of the set but I may be confusing that with natural numbers). By the definition you first learn of even numbers, 0 is not even. It's not until you get to middle school/high school where you start learning mathematical theory and proofs rather than just axiomatically following rules that they reexamine how/why 0 is an even number.
