Winged Kobolds are superior.

Can fly, can have breath attack. There's no reason to be play a common kobold.

>Why did they turn kobolds from dogs to mini-dragons?
Because "kobold" has a broad definition open for interpretation, as opposed to one rigid standard.
>>
>>97792028
You don't play a kobold to be better than anyone else.
You play one to be a plucky underdog
>>
>>97791908
Kobolds were described as dog-like critters with scaly skin to better distinguish them from goblins. In Japan, a translation error resulted in the dog form they have. Years later someone drew them as little dragon lizard people in 3e, and they've been that way ever since.

Because even Gygax admitted they did a shit job describing them and the artwork was inconsistent for TSR AND the lore behind them was basically non-existent as well. WotC just fleshed them out and made the description consistent.
They've been little dragon things for 26 years now which is the same amount of time they weren't.

You trade being able to squeeze through tight passages, that no tall creature would fit into, for a questionable ability to be visible to everyone, and usually be the first one to take a hit, which is something kobolds aren't very good at.
Being sneaky is what works best for them, wings only get in the way.

>>97793309
Aggregate stats give you only a very, VERY rough idea of party's overall strength.
Any area attack will weed out the weaklings and glass cannons, i.e. wizards, leaving tough but less powerful members standing.
A chase will leave paladin in his heavy armor panting up a storm behind everyone, temporarily taking party's meatshield off the board.

Individual strengths and weaknesses are of far greater importance than the averaged stats of the party.
You could be in a party of living gods, you'd still get wiped out due to being significantly squishier.

He won because his combat stats were higher than the dragon's. He didn't overcome odds, the odds were in his favor.

You win battles in TTRPGs because your stats are higher. Your build is better. Maybe you can play medieval SWAT but when you're playing a melee guy and you're in a head on battle there's not much room for anything more than being better than the guy you're facing.

Characters aren't mere stat blocks anon.
Combat isn't a slapping match to see who folds first.
You'd know that, if you ever played a game.
>>
>>97794640
Kobolds should be muscular, stronger to carry bigger swords

>>97793926
With but they should be small
>>
>>97797313
I have played games. Not just D&D and it's derivatives. In all of them the strongest one wins the melee, sans the vagaries of fate.

But if you've got a particular example in mind to share that proves contrary, do tell. Though I'll probably dismissively say that it's still related to having higher stats so maybe don't bother.

Slightly negative. D&D Kobolds are mostly boring to me. I much prefer the Pathfinder designs; they're not endearing they're just generally unpleasant and aggressive looking. They look like they're going to throw rocks at small human children and then run off when an adult notices them. They look like they're going to sneak into your house at night and hide a nail in the sole of your boot. They look like they have nothing but malice and greed in their hearts. I like all of that.

Bombs, a jar of bees or spiders, thrown potions (poison or smoke clouds, alchemical fire, even the humble grease), crippling attacks, stealth and maneuvering, prepared terrain and traps - all are useful at reducing the raw strength advantage.
The opponent isn't a stat block, they're a creature of some kind, with their own potential weak points in armor, physical dimensions, and vulnerable anatomy.

If your DM can't be bothered to give a proper description, rather than prompting you with "X attacks, wat do?" that's their problem.
Think outside of the stat box anon. This isn't vidiya, you can redefine things, like how you attack or use abilities/items/magic.
Your abilities and skills aren't a fixed thing that can only ever be used exactly one way.

>vagaries of fate
The above, arguably, falls somewhat into that category, but it doesn't make it any less valid.

>when you're playing a melee guy and you're in a head on battle there's not much room for anything more than being better than the guy you're facing
That only applies if the "game" you're playing is just "I roll to attack" vs a save-or-suck AC mechanic.
>>
>>97795857
So what?
You can still make your fantasy creatures however you want, because most of them are only broadly defined.

The one with the dragon who nerds out over weapons? Where the main character is some kind of knight in a slavic or at least bohemian nation? And there's a brothel full of kobold chicks with a kobold matron, that the knight visits with a lecherous bard?

It was called Trash Knight. It's been dead for ages. Didn't make it much farther than the brothel being burned down by what appeared to be invading mongols.

Meepo really is a much more koboldy looking kobold than any of the D&D kobolds. WoW kobolds are a close second.
