MtG, and even D&D, invert this where most of the focus is placed on the world, made even more pronounced by how, even in the 3-set block era, that was generally all that could be given focus on the cards before the planes was dropped forever (reduced to just several years once we started doing revisits to Ravnica). That's why the books have historically sucked and the TV series/movie are stuck in limbo.
