In your opinion what sets a person's homebrew from the rest of the homebrew in a positive way?

Also Ian Watson has passed away. Pour one out for him.

>What assets/templates etc. are you using anon?
For the book or for the renders? Book I have nothing atm but I've used Ilovepdf to get the backgrounds pics of GW books before so I'll try to see if any of my IA pdfs works. For the renders I'm just modelling them from scratch using the new 30k colour plates as reference for proportions.
>I'm still looking for a proper grainy filter for the model photos.
Photopainting is like black magic to me I wish I knew how to do it. For now I'm just starting with the colour plates and the order of battle autism. Some inked pencil sketch here and there if I like how my shit drawing skills look like.

Generally when the homebrew is by someone who actually has painted models accompanying the homebrew it makes the homebrew feel more genuine and fun to skim over.
I don't know why. Maybe it is just me.

>Ian Watson passed away
I hope this is misinformation, but to be fair most of the original lads are passing away or close to it now.
He did good for 40k. They all did.

Was or are there any big shots at GW that genuinely did good for Warhammer 40k as a whole?
Does Alan Bligh count?

Played a game of 5th edition on Saturday.
We were using the Cities of Death supplement, if urban warfare is your jam I wholeheartedly recommend playing this.

While I did enjoy the game, so much bullshit happened during it, holy shit..
I'll avoid spamming the thread since I'm not good at writing these things, so it's just the highlights.

As per the scenario we chose, each of us had to select a building/ruin in opposite quadrands of the map that would act as out FOBs, we had to capture the opponent's base to win the scenario. We both picked 3 stratagem cards(very flavourful, it's a fun read). One of the stratagems I picked allowed me to place several tank traps on the map to make passage impossible for vehicles(I later learned that it made the game really difficult for my friend)

Do you guys think termies will be buffed in 11th? I have my tactical termie squad and termie chaplain being useless for the longest time now.
>>
>>97886897
Thanks for responding!
I meant for the book. Sorry if I was too vague.
I have been looking for an image editor like Photoshop (or I might stop being scared of viruses and just pirate it) to hopefully be able to create all filters and templates within the software like the beige "parchment" background colours of the image you used in your post.

Then hopefully after that be able to take "on the ground angled" photos of miniatures and then photoshop them to look cinematic.
A grainy filter is meant to cover up amateur goofs on my part.
Not to say that the IA model photos were bad. There is a special kind of ingredient intertwined with talent those ForgeWorld graphics designers had that I lack and I hope it leaks somehow. Stuff looks deceptively simple to be honest.

But sometimes loads of photo effects can work without a filter too.

The new weirdboy is beautiful. I love the wires floating all around him signalling warp energy being present instead of a ton of lightning bolts everywhere, and the 1 lightning bolt being between his head and staff. I don't mind the smaller arms here because weirdboys are, well, weird. Not typical Orks where they'd be extremely buff and huge due to swinging their choppas around all day. This git works out at the library.

warhammer is expensive in general, but neither army is too bad. elves are pretty elite so you’ll need fewer models but orks are cheaper per model.

Orks are primarily a fighting army with some shooty elements while eldar are a primarily a shooty army with some melee elements.

Elves aren’t super hard to paint because they’re mostly monocolored body suits with some little greebles and you’re painting far fewer of them so you’ll have a painted army quicker than Orks. Elves ARE a bitch to build, it’s going to take more time to build a model versus the mostly ball and socket orks.

Elves are generally a more complicated army to play and much less beginner friendly. Orks are have some naunce too, with learning how to set up your GO turn and when to initiate your GO turn.

Elves have feels bad games. sometimes you stomp someone with cheese and sometimes you get tabled in two turns. Ive always enjoyed the games I play against Orks and Ork players. There’s a little more bullshit factor with elves.

Overall, the fight in the middle ends up not being too interesting, the gist of it is, Tacticals get rekt by DC, run off towards the side of the board, and hold further back where they eventually end up killed by the vets that have been coming towards them.
>Tactical squad in my FOB provides covering fire, which kills two more
>embedded lascannon and plasma gun roll 1s to hit two turns in a row
>DC run up to my Venerable Dreadnought and leave it a crippled metal nugget without arms and legs, after which they run off towards my base screaming something about Horus, leaving my dreadnought very confused
This is the point where some serious BS starts to happen

I feel like the hobby aspect of the Orks should be mentioned, there's a lot more freedom and creativity, with Orks you're painting a lot of rusty scrap and random decorations and you can cobble together anything. Other than WYSIWYG armaments the only rule to building or painting them is "Be green. Green iz betta".
Eldar are a bitch to build, very formulaic, and for a good paint job your options are airbrush, eavy metal, or vintage style glaze blending.

It isn’t impossible, but its pretty unlikely that 88 and thunderbolts would both be passed down the line to space wolves, especially when a lot of 21st century people with nazis on the brain don’t know what those symbols are. this would arguably be justifiable if it was a successor chapter based in some weird star trek nazi planet, but they’re explicitly space wolves from fenris, so it doesn’t really make sense.

Moment of the game time
Everything looked winnable up until this point.
Deathstar in position, more or less safe to charge in. HOWEVER, a small voice in the back of my head wanted me to try out an orbital bombardment.
>screw it, why not? I don't get the chance to use it very often.
>declare Orbital Bombardment, the template catches the entire squad occupying the ruin
>perfect
>time to roll
Moments later:
>there is a giant crater left in the exact spot my Chapter Master and his posse used to stand because the template scattered 10 inches directly on top of them, also catching the Land Speeder
>20% of the points value of my army wiped by my retarded Chapter Master

we’re more of a mid-tier army with a very low skill floor. It’s a hard army to play that is a little overcosted, it’s probably one of the worst to *start* playing with as a beginner right now, but definitely not the worst performing army.

to be fair, feldgrau would likely blend in too heavily with the rest of the blueish grey model or be really ugly against the yellow. likely a good way to be clever with it (and increase deniability) would be to have them understand 88 is a sacred symbol, but believe that all repeating double digits are also sacred so the models are all covered in 44, 66, 99, ect. which they have different meanings for, but 88 is the most holy symbol and is the symbol for space wolf supremacy, and that supremacy is as well done through twin lightning bolts which is also a repeating symbol.

everything in the setting is going to appear small in number or rare compared to the quadrillions of the humans, orks, and tyranids. Orks and Tyranids rely on fewer “support” organisms to fight than humans, but there’s a million imperium worlds and some planets have trillions of humans.

Tau, Dark Eldar, and Votann have decent numbers, certainly billions, but they’re clustered in specific areas of the galaxy (or clustered in a specific spot outside the galaxy in one alternate dimension metropolis) so they’re ultimately relatively rare. compare that to Craftworld Eldar who probably only number in the millions but span the galaxy from their colony-ships and webway gates. all four of those races probably have about the same impact on the galaxy as secondary players.

Eldar wraith constructs aren’t hard to build. the issue is spirit stones and souls capable of being roused for battle. wraithknights have a specific unqiue issue of needing twins/lover/spiritually bonded couples, one alive, one in a spirit stone, to operate. I would be suprised if more than a few hundred wraithknight are active and functioning

necrons are the biggest “who tf knows” trillions went to sleep, but how many will wake up and how many will still be functioning is completely unknowable.

showed one model of the new boyz kit when they revealed the edition and their boss nob a bit later, they're mainly gonna let you pick a shoota and a choppa rather than one or the other like the old kit

the leagues are rare only because they keep to themselves and live in a part of the galaxy most other races wont go, but they are mentioned to be quite a bit more numerous than the tau or eldar. each of the titular "leagues" are a massive galactic empire unto themselves

i just didnt know if that was just a one off promotional model or if they actually had a new kit coming, because if they look as good as that guy i'll hold off till the new kit arrives

>Alternative rules in OP

Anybody tried these game systems?
We always complain about GW rules writing so maybe those would be better by chance?
Maybe the complaints are why they were added to the OP.
Probably for the same reason the Wargames Terrain link was added too after so much complaints about game terrain.

Am I the only one that doesn't like the "effects" parts on newer models? The new weirdboy has a lightning arc, the ork biker guy has a flame burst, every smoke grenade has smoke coming out of it, the hellsmiths from AOS had flames and smoke everywhere.

It just feels so cartoonish.

they’re still big dudes in big armor with big guns, but an army needs skirmishers to conduct flanking manuevers or chase down faster opponents

given the scarcity of resources, it’s not that crazy that there’s not enough armor to go around for each rookie. Black templars often put scouts right in the thick of it mixed in with their regular crusaders.

It will endure. I mix primaris with the older patterns but I treat them like another mark with a twist and the unique weapons/armor like special equipment. I might use phobos marines as scouts, like to represent a vet sgt for instance.

That's okay, that's what's fun about 40k, we have enough to do what we like best

i like him, the paintjob could be better but the model itself is cool. reminds me of the electro-priests from admech. i love the frankenstein electro-coil aesthetic

New monopose kit in the starter set and potentially a proper multipart kit later.

This is actually a stand-alone promo mini, like the free ones they give away at GW stores.

>if they actually had a new kit coming
Gee I wonder why they revealed this model with the other Space Marine during their huge Marines vs Orks box reveal.

Armour aside, primaris squad organization is a mess and the "lore" for it is barely a justification for it to not have any proper organization.

I don't like them, I tolerate them if they're optional, but like tactical rocks they're just a way to inflate the plastic and reduce the value of the model.

I hate that modern models are meant to be display pieces, instead of playing with MINIATURE (see: small, tiny versions of) soldiers I feel like I'm playing with very small collector's edition statues, except I gotta assemble and paint it. But hey, normalfags lap it up.
