Been doing a lot of Dr. Spork’s terrain. Good stuff
>>97943178I like these old sensible geared orks over the modern gigaroid green screeching face gorillas that live in scrap-metal-welded-together buildings with gear that also looks just as if scrap metal was welded and bolted together.
Olden Demon's coming up again, any /grog/s participating in it?
In 2e Chaos, am I correct that a Veteran Chaos Space Marine squad cannot Infiltrate if I attach any other character besides Aspiring Champion?
>>97943157When you're surrounded on all sides, you don't need to aim.
>>97950326>>97943178>>97943168Those warband, Mad Max styled uniforms look nice.
>>97953138I wanted to go but I'm at an age where my health is getting in the way.
>>97953776>Olden Demon'sAn online contest. But seriously mad that BOYL is so up in the air this year, was planning on flying over but the lack of solid dates/venue has got me hesitating. And traveling has never been more expensive.
>>97950329I read the title to Rogue Trooper and thought it was a crossover.
>>97953841For me it's how there's barely any participation games and a whole swathe of tables have been given over to some podcasters/e-beggers finishing their personal campaign or something
>>97943157Can I ask about listbuilding for 3.5e here or is that middlehammer or whatever and thus not wanted in these parts? Basically just hoped some oldfag could run his eyes over my list and see if I am being totally retarded or not since I'm trying to adjust from later editions. Thanks.
>>97955570Ask. What are they going to do? Call you names?
>>97955781I'd rather not shit up someone else's thread for no reason because I'm a decent person despite my flaws. So if it's outside the scope of the thread, I'm not gonna bother posting.
>>97955570Most anons in this thread are super chill. Worst case, you just won't get a super quick answer.
>>97955570>>97955800It's not like this is a very busy thread either way.
>>97955800>>97955806Well, in that case thanks. I will.I am using the 4e nids list and basically had two objectives. First to use what I already had on hand, and second to try and have a good variety of what was available at the time. And of course, for me to have not made unintentionally retarded choices out of sheer ignorance. Basically was hoping for "good list kiddo" or "you should reconsider these parts sport".
>>97953150Thats right.
>>97956501
>>97955570If the thread wasn't about more than just Oldhammer, why put Retro in the title as well, it would be fucking redundant.
>>97955836Looks like a pretty versatile list to me
>>97956676Retro means stuff before the turn of the millennium, 2004 is still pretty recent...
>>97957001Who's gonna tell him?
>>97957004What do you mean we're past a quarter of the century? It literally just started!
>>97955836Not familiar with the 4th ed nid codex but I'd be tempted to try bigger swarms of gaunts. 20 Hormagaunts fleet footing and assaulting 12 is more threatening than two smaller units of 10. It will either do some damage, tarpit something or be enough of a threat it takes shooting off your monsters.
>>97957395Unfortunately that would mean buying more gaunts. I split them into two broods thinking it might be more flexible, but I suppose if I treated the shooty gaunts as my left flank and my clawed blob as the right which tarpits and softens up before the stealers arrived it might be more useful?
>>97957463unless you intend to use them to sit on an objective always max out gaunt squads before getting another squad. combat resolution is a bitch and will wipe smaller gaunt squads fast. bigger squads have better combat res and both win combats better as well as resist lost combats better, there may be a sweet spot of squad size to avoid being unwieldy but i personally never tried to find it. maximize or minimize your gaunts, dont halfway with gaunts.
Do you have what it takes to win a copy of the Lost and the Damned? Or a copy of Space Hulk?A few of the LatD questions I had no idea. The Space Hulks were too easy.
>>97958333More than 24 gaunts (either kind) in a brood seems like it would piss me off to actually move around on the table so I don't think I'll ever max out. I understand the point, I'll consider buying more boxes of hormagaunts and make a swarm list eventually if I'm going to have fucking 80 gaunts and 30 stealers on hand anyways. Still not enthralled with Gargoyles tho. Just don't get the appeal.
Which edition is better to get into, 3rd or 4th? I found 10th to be boring and I don't see 11th being any better.
>>97960430They're both similar enough such that their codexes are largely compatible. Many armies were still using 3rd edition codexes for years after 4th edition was released (Eldar, CSM, Orks).I think 4th edition rules are slightly better, because of the less easily abused rules for transports.
>>97955836It's been a long ass time but double-check if you can actually take VC and BS on the Hive Tyrant at the same time. I know its allowed for the Carnifex but for some reason my brain is telling me Tyrants couldn't do that. Might be misremembering though. Same thing with the twin linked deathspitters on the warrior brood. Also I think Raveners were minimum 3 models? So maybe combine those into a unit of 5.Otherwise perfectly serviceable list. It's not like its optimized for ruthless competitive play but I don't think it's bad either, a lot will come down to how you pilot it.
>>979604304th for sure. The usual wisdom is use the first 4 codexes of 4th edition (space marines, tyranids, tau empire, black templar) and 3.5 codexes for the rest.
>>97960843You made me double check but>HT can take both, and more importantly shoot both every turn (Warriors are limited though to one of those per brood, might be what you were thinking of)>no restriction on warriors doubling up on a gun (it just gets twinlinked obvs, which I thought was more worth it than gun+scything talons)>raveners are 1-6 for brood sizeThanks for making me double check. I thought about dropping the Lictor and Biovore and just taking another Carnifex but I looked deep in my soul and realized I'd rather have more bug variety than power. I technically do have a third Carnifex around but... I think the new Lictor and Biovore models are cool. You know? I might go nidzilla on an alt-list and have CC.flyrant and shit for fun.>>97960430Seconding what the others said, 4th. I have only gotten in a small 1k points game so far, but honestly it really is delivering a lot more fun so I hope you end up loving it too. Really re-energized my appreciation for the hobby.
>2ed>trying to build a chaos list with my terminators>"Chaos Space Marine Terminators may be upgraded to Khorne Berzerker...>... +20 pts per model"Wait I thought you couldn't...>mark of khorne>armour grows to be a part of their body>they may never remove it>2+ armour save>terminators>wear terminator armour that provides 2d6 on the 3+ saving throw>khorne berzerkers>wear chaos armour that provides a 2+ saving throw>army list section: "Chaos armour (2+ save)">armour section>power armour: fluff, it's shittier power armour but it's not functionally different>terminator armour: 2d6, 3+, no targeters nor teleporters nor terminator marine wargear cards... I can't find a specific thing saying no to literally unkillable terminators versus zero AP weapons (not that there are many without AP in this edition)Even referring to Abaddon>"Abaddon wears Terminator armour which has been blessed by the dark gods of Chaos (2+ save on 2D6)"doesn't really say it's only his special armour that is ever allowed to do it because he's basically a combined list of blessings without the negatives. Can I... just do that? I was more interested in Nurgle for the extra toughness even if the blight grenades and plague knives aren't allowed. But triple charge range, which the aspiring champion also benefits from, is pretty tempting.
>>97961023Lictor was also pretty fun to use in 4th, so yeah, go for the variety.
>>97961041Yes you 100% can. Khorne Terminators in 2nd are awesome.
>>97961148TRUTH FACT AND BLOOD CHECKEDTHIS POST HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO YOU BY KHORNE'S ANGRIEST SLAUGHTERS
>>97961041Yeah those fuckers are a nightmare to deal with and are not even that expensive. Slap some dumbshit cultists in front of them to soak up lascannon fire.
>>97961041You've stumbled on one of the oldest memes of 2nd ed. It's even referenced in the old RGMW Usenet form flame. No, you can't. This answer was provided in the CustServe email Q&A file you could get mailed to you. Your call if you consider that sufficiently canon.11) Chaos Terminators with Mark of Khorne - 2+ or 3+ save on 2D6?3+ (only Abbadon's armor goes to 2+ on 2D6). Chaos Armor is not Terminator Armor. Only Chaos Armored troops get the +1 to their save.
A squig for your trouble
>>97961766Wait what, is that for real? Do you have more info, document or something
>>97962144It's referenced in the current Battle Bible. The text is there, but incorrectly placed (it's listed there as being from the official GW website FAQ, but that FAQ had no Chaos section for whatever reason). There's an archive link provided for the CustServ file, though, in the Other FAQs section.
>>97962243Oh wow thanks!
>>97962243Found it but as you said it's missing the entire chaos section. That's a bugger and won't end any table disputes. The rest of the chaos questions are sort of weird and would wind up with someone being grumpy too. Like summoning points: allies no longer contribute despite only Khorne's being explicit and Tzeentch using the enemy's psyker, and what I can only divine from the FAQ text as non-standard leadership tests not counting for Slaanesh, e.g. Allure of Slaanesh, Rod of Torment (I think those are the only two examples inside the codex and anything more was added later?)Also noticed a different thing in the archived FAQ:> If I have no psykers in Warhammer 40,000, do I still get dealt Warp cards?>Yes you do. Also note that the warp flux dice roll can never be reduced to less than 1D6, even if there are no psykers left in the game at all. What is even the point of that when you can't use any of the warp cards?
>>97964404>What is even the point of that when you can't use any of the warp cards?Sorry if I'm not being clear. I mean for the "even if there are no psykers left"I did a quick skim and still cannot find a card you're allowed to play with no psykers, let alone a matchup with no surviving pyskers as there are no spells to counter.
>>97964404>and won't end any table disputesFuck them then. The only good way to play 2ed is to fuck all the """official""" FAQs and Q&As, and when doubt arises figure out a sensible solution, if multiple equally [non]sensible interpretations arise just roll for it.
>>97961766I was pretty sure there was a White Dwarf FAQ that said otherwise.
>>97964486The issue was never raised in any of the WD Q&A articles. I suppose it's possible it was mentioned somewhere else, but those were the logical places to put such a clarification.
>>97959167Am I crazy or are all answer to TLATD questions 'C'?
>>97961766I would assume this, since the description of the mark does say it's Chaos armour ("This Chaos armour gives the Chaos Champion an armour saving throw of 2+"), not just a modification to an existing armour. I don't know how the rules handle multiple armours, but I assume you pick the one you want, rather than combine them and use all of their rules together in one roll. I mean, if you could give a terminator character a shield with an "unmodified armour saving throw," would you allow the player to use the terminator's 2D6 roll for that?
>>97969385#3 is the one I had no idea on, but I think you are correct. You could have been a winner.
>>97969385Iirc the flight of the Eisenstein is considered the start because it's the first time marines fight each other rather than Horus wiping out Isstvan.
>>97970617Eisenstein (even back in RT) was captured after Horus started purging Isstvan.
>>97969470Well assault terminators are very much a thing. Character with Storm Shield, Terminator armor, and Field Save would have 3 saves, 5 with if its a psyker with Aegis Suit and protection spell active if the attack is psychic attack. I'm sure there are more broken combinations but honestly what kind of asshat wants to play the game like that
BattleBible gives CSM power swords, but I don't see them as an option in the codex. Is this given in some supplement or is the BB wrong?
>>97970665I was under the impression a model could only have one wargear item that gave an unmodified save. So a storm shield and an energy shield of any kind would clash.
>>97970652I know, Isstvan didn't have marines in the chaos books however.
>>97970685Looks to be an error: only Daemon World and Cult characters can have the sword.
>>97970652I went and checked and looks like I remembered correctly. GW, send me the tLatD book.
>>97970886Weird that the destruction of an entire planet is not enough to count as the opening salvos of the Heresy, but the capture of a ship once the bombardment started is...
>>97970685Is that a power chainsword?
>>97970873>have two old CSM arms with power swords>can only field them as swords, which suck compared to even plain chainswordsDark Gods, why do you test me so?
>>97970929Not really considering the Eisenstein being seized is the first time marines fought each other. It's like the assassination of archduke Franz Ferdinand being part of the events that triggered ww1 without being part of it. The bombing of civilians with virus weapons, Horus pledging loyalty to feral world deities and his vision of an Imperium of chaos were the triggers except while it took a month for ww1 the marines fought back the moment after Isstvan was scoured of life.
>>97970960Which edition? In 2e they're chainswords when held by chaos marines due to strength, they're just less interesting than all the exotic options.
>>97970723Storm Shield is not a field save, so you can take refractor, conversion, displacer or power field on top of it. Orks have something similar going on with the Mega armors medsquig save
>>97968195Who painted these?
>>97971477I don't know, but it looks they got ran through one of those prettifying phone apps with that aggressive smooth and sharpen.
>>97971097
>>97970979So, if China nuked Taiwan, it would only count as a war once US and Chinese troops fired at each other? Horus bombing Isstvan was his opening gambit and the action of betrayal that triggered loyalists in his ranks to seize the Eisenstein. If it was not a betrayal of the Emperor, why did the troops fire upon their brethren and capture the ship?
>>97971023>mfw I'm reminded once more that 2e has strength based save modifiers like in WHFBI'm sorry I ever doubted you, my dark lieges!
>>97971718Read the lost and the damned.
>>97971775And don't forget, the Corpse-Worshippers:>don't have access to 1pt basic swords, so must purchase 2pt chainswords for parry>don't have access to 2pt chainaxes for +1 strength>cannot have frenzy AND parry at the same time!>must bring a tech marine to have any vehicle that is not a bike (sidecar requires a tech marine!)>and much more!imagine not devoting yourself to Chaos today!Terms and conditions apply, stormbolters may appear to be twin linked, jumppacks not included and raptors not yet invented outside homebrew, teleport unavailable outside abaddon, soul at risk, accidental death from on purpose sacrifice may occur at any hour, enter our chaos dreadnought program and win a free prize.
>>97971860While the lack of jump packs hurts a little (can't make raptors), I do enjoy the ability to make small, dedicated squads with all sorts of nifty things. Had a bunch of old CSM and NL bits laying around and thought about making a small (2000pts.) army to go with my IG.>don't have access to 2pt chainaxes for +1 strengthChain-axe in marine hands is basically a (one-handed) power axe for 5pts. less.
>>97960430>>97960862 is correct. Not much more to say really, it's the consensus position for a reason.
>>97971683Ah thanks, that's gonna raise eyebrows at my table but will ultimately be a good thing
>>97972336There's a nice 2e FAQ with citations:https://www.scribd.com/document/694394805/2nd-Ed-40k-WD-Q-A
>>97971959>small (2000pts.)
>>97972517(You don't get a lot of Space Marines for 2000 points.)
>>97972517>that is the joke18 CSM/Veterans, 6 terminators, 6 characters, dread and two rhinos. Plus upgrades.
>>97972517This lil zoomer niglet thinks 2e points work exactly the same as in newer editions.Everybody point at him and laugh.
>>97943175Gem
>>97972443Oh shid what a treasure, thank you sir
In 4th/5th edition do you keep your wizards in units or do you leave them solo?
>>97975153Very variable depending on basically how hard they are the army: The average wizard is solo/on some kinda handy but fairly cheap mount for mobility but not too far from a friendly unit so they can dive for cover. If they're some form of combat bastard like many chaos ones then they're on a dragon or manticore or the like to boost that. If they're the army commander situation (like a Slann or some undead ones) then not the worst idea to give them a chunky guard screen (with some interceptor hero) so they don't get ganked by some bastard on a dragon or the like.
>>97970685
>>97943157I wanna ask here what's preferred, rogue trader classic, or renagade scout?
>>97979329Renegade Scout has practical vehicle rules versus the insanity of Rogue Trader's turning radius and targeting grids. Rick Priestly just loved novel subsystems, whether they added to the gameplay experience or not. |M|WS|BS|S|T|W|I|A|Ld|Int|Cl|Wp| might be a bloated stat line, but Renegade Scout's|Mo|MeS|ShS|Po|De|WP|Ob|AtD|LeS|In|CUF|Wyrd| is just naff. Renegade Scout's extra movement option (cautious) adds more tactical nuance. Rogue Trader is a lush book packed packed with fluff and illustrations, plus actual typesetting and graphic design. It is, at it's heart, a hybrid RPG/wargame. The rules are sometimes vague. And while a GM isn't required, the rules often assume otherwise. Renegade Scout looks like the layout was done in a basic text editor with total disregard as to how a page looks. It is a wargame with RPG and solo play options. The rules have definitely benefitted from the 30+ years of wargaming between the two. I'd rather play 2nd edition 40k than either, but you can pry my copy of Rogue Trader from my cold dead hands.
>>97979874would i be missing out on any of the zanyness of rogue trader, like the full chaos rules with both realms of chaos and slaves to darkness books, or is that included. I just wanna know if Renegade Scout is a substitute for RT proper, i dont mind the generic setting, infact i might even prefer it in some regard. but I still want some of the weirder older stuff thats properly 40k as well.also call me retarded, is any of the special rules reflected in the rogue trader rules, or was that just added by nordic weasel games.
>>97978965I wish the Chaos codex was slightly better in that all these obscure rules weren't all over the place. However I have not found a misprint yet so there's nothing wrong with any rule or statblock you do find.
>>97979937To answer my own question, im reading through one of the compendium and the enforcers special rule is in one of the space marines fluff and rule blurbs. So there you go there, I guess RS really is just a restatement of RT
>>97980034If it wasn't poorly laid out and scattered over a dozen pages (if not a dozen sources) it wouldn't be a TRPG/wargame. Everything organized in one place just isn't "it" for this hobby.
Can you help me out, I'm looking for space marine coloring page from old white dwarf, some kids had made their own chapters and submitted them too. Googling gives way too much primaris marines and I cant seem to find the original one
>>97978965So, if my dyslexic ass can make sense of this:>Chaos can use 'Imperial Only' Wargear cards on top of generic and Chaos ones>Chaos can use the Wargear lists in Codex Ultramarines at +50% markup (I assume you're still limited to what the unit in question can take, so CSM can only take from Assault, Special and Heavy weapons lists, right?)>am I correct in understanding that this +50% markup only applies to the list and not the cards?>Chaos can take vehicles and support weapons from the Support section of Codex: Ultramarines at +50% markup>but not Dreadnoughts (or is the exception for the +50% markup for Support list items?)
>>97981873>but not DreadnoughtsThis. Because Chaos Dreadnoughts have special drawbacks, as well as different weapon access (no Assault cannon for you, that's what Reapers are for)>have to abide by other unit restrictions for wargear listsAlso this.

>>97984494Brilliant.
>>97981873You can also take modern terminator armour that unless I missed something means you can get targeters and storm bolters, but you now do not have chain axes or +1 attack in hand to hand from the chaos combi bolter... or am I dumb?
>>97984786Seems so. Shame there's no way to give non-character terminator a single claw.
>>97984210Thanks
>>97964476There are some cases where it might be useful. For example, take a game where a player has a culexus assassin and there are no psykers in either army. The assassin's force matrix gains force points in the psychic phase to use with their animus speculum, but an energy drain warp card is stated to remove all of the force matrix's force points before ending the phase. Normally to use a warp deck card the player who's turn it is needs to first pick a psychic power card to use, but energy drain specifically says that it can be used in place of a psychic power card.
>>97985815>assassin force pointsDid not know, will look at the codex>energy drainBefore I check, I'm going to assume this means it's a bit easier for the assassin as no-one can play this without a psyker
>>97986062Oh yeah, wait. I forgot that Dark Millennium explicitly says under the loss of psykers section that all of the cards except nullify won't work for your side at all if you don't have a psyker. I was thinking that would work. There might be other situations where drawing the cards triggers something, but I can't think of what it would be off the top of my head.
>>97986159Alright looking at the rules, I see the force matrix and understand that it really doesn't care, though at that point the assassin has done his job and is probably going to be shot as a rewardThere must have been a reason for still drawing force cards, even if it was a potential future army rule>all cards except nullifyAnd daemon attack! You can always be eaten by a psykerless opponent!
Renegade Scout anon here, does anyone have RS's second editions supplements? I think i found everything i needed online 4 free because of piracy, but the troves on /awg/ , scribd, and PDF coffee can only take my so far, if no one else has the PDFs on hand, ontop of it all, i figured out a method for unit creation>use the formula from RT>Use both base human stats for both games as a basis, and using RS's first editions unit tier and rounding the second editions units point cost down to the sum of all of them and use that as the basis of point calculation, so far, im really happy with Renegade Scout conceptually, its giving me a degree of freedom I dont even think proper rogue trader has given me, its almost OSRish in a sense.any tips for making special rules, though? im finding that I dont necessarily like what RS is presenting in this regard.
Where to look for Squats ?
>>97987152They're quite short, so generally you need to look down.
>>97987152Originals, recasts or proxys?
>>97987669Yes, all of the following.
>>97943157Is there any dummy proof method of taking scans of modern CAD models and then producing a recreation of it if the model is reimagined as an old school sculpted miniature? Think "video game demakes" but with modern miniatures "demade" into looking like they were professionally sculpted oldhammer minis using older sculpting techniques before computer assisted designing became a thing.
>>97990221If we ignore just learning how to sculpt I guess you could feed the models through an AI but that comes with it's own set of problems.
>>97972730>More characters than grunts2nd Edition, I miss her sometimes.
>>97984237Space Birds was a worthy winner, though I have to hand it to the kid who went 'Fuck it' and just stuck an L in Word Bearers.
>>97990497For me, it's the one who just drew the Blood Angel from the starter box cover art and called it a 'Demon Avenger'
Honestly given both this and the Combat Patrol rules given in the same rulebook, do I need more? I'm not totally sold on pic related with the Brutes angle, I'd prefer to just do it more equal, one team against 1 team with the asymmetric mode as another alternative. Does that work? Surely it should, I don't recall if Mordheim had anything notably divergent from the main game at the time and that was team vs team with the same amount of points.
>>97990221Lol, no. I think the big thing is that hand sculpted miniatures are subtly irregular all over. You would need to go in and add add subtle skews before slamming a subsurf on and using digital clay sculpting to to further reduce overly regular bits and add period detail. Then slicing and rescaling appropriately. Then joining and fixing everything.Studying era minis with an eye on limb proportions would help, as you could write a decent paper on "Terminator armor limb length and hand size, a study of select Jes Goodwin miniatures from 1988-1998." Same with pose restrictions and the overall flattening caused by the limitations of spin molding metal minis in semi-rigid two part rubber molds. Some sculptors were amazing at working around this (The Perry Bros), but most weren't. Basically, you would have to study old minis and drawings to the point that you wouldn't have needed to ask this question in the first place. As someone who sculpts, the whole idea seems a lot of fucking work for dubious gains. Assuming autism/clout chasing anyway.
>>97991452ai can do this
>>97991640Then why hasn't it saar?
>>97991640Put your money where your mouth's at or kys, peddler of goyslop.
>>97991820it pretty much has, you can find examples of people using ai to make 1:1 versions of classic minis
>>97992166Except the details, proportions and scaling are all off, every part of the sculpt not visible in the photos is machine hallucinated and the mesh is often broken, messy and not good enough for printing without doing a lot of work on it first. Now, if you don't care about quality and want a vaguely oldhammer shaped blob of resin to slather in contrast paints, it's probably ok.Scanners, on the other hand, do excellent work. Photogrammetry is good, laser is even better. I'm in with a couple of oldhammer scanners on telegram, and being able to get my hands on some extremely rare miniatures, digital as they may be, is a dream come true. Now, if only metal printing was cheaper and more consumer friendly, we'd be printing beautiful chunks of metal.
>>97992166Then why aren't you doing that? Are you poor? Are you a loser?
>>97988367For something similar to the originals, you could try Roknauts. For something more scifi-ish there's Mantic's Forgefathers. For something slightly more grounded there's Wargames Atlantic's Einherjar. If Hasslefree ever open again their Grymn may be something like what you're looking for.

>>97994849Cool. But looks like they already had an accident.
>>97994896Hehe. Maybe they've been using the same cannon for many years and haven't found a repair shop in the eye of terror. >>97996234Badass, looks retro and cool, great conversation!
>>97975153>>97977258Flying units can be a factor too. If you don't have any of your own flying units to stop them the enemy ones can fly high then the following turn diving charge anywhere on the map, you can choose all the normal charge reactions and if you flee the flying unit can't chase but you might not want a fleeing wizard.
>>97992214>Photogrammetry is good, laser is even better. Is it? All the laser scanners I've seen don't seem to capture minute details.
>>97996315>>97996653Thanks to all grogs for your supportive comments. This project was great fun and (to me at least) very much in the spirit of old Warhammer. Here's the finished result for now. I might return to it in a few days with a fresh set of eyes for some final fixes, but right now I'm itching to build & paint some Death Guard.I tested some ideas for further RT Rhinos, like painting the tracks solid brown and the side grills solid black. Balancing between the retro bright red and grimy metals was something to be considered too. I'm looking forward to painting more old tanks. Cheers!

Hey /grog/, is this the place to ask for 40k 3/4e advice? If so, I'm looking at running a 10 man Assault Marine squad. Should I take plasma pistols or flamers in it?
>>98005594>LimewireAnon, I know this is the retro thread and all, but is it really that necessary to go there?
I paid the ebay toll, now I have nostalgia to the veins. The bloodthirster is a lot smaller than i remember. I was 7-8-9 years old back then though..
>>98006543Also got some berzerkers, gonna repose, base, etc. Also trying to get a photogrammetry scan / AI gen of the monopose plastic guys. I want to be able to print a whole squad of slightly scaled up monopose zerkers.
>>98005753One of each seems reasonable. There is no need to min-max. You aren't Rhino rushing right?Though 3E BBB you only get 1 plasma pistol per squad and no flamer option, with the sarge being upgradeable for another plasma. 3E SM codex nets you a second plasma pistol choice plus upgradeable sarge. Still no flamer. I like the focused roles of core 3E a lot, even if it's stripped to the bone compared to 2nd.
>>97992214nah AI is getting pretty good.. I made this from two ebay auction photos in like 5 minutes.
>>98006842Thanks Anon. Sarge has plasma and power axe/weapon that I plastic cemented on years and years ago- along with a proper, bitchin CSM horned helmet for the jump pack assisted headbutt. Jump packson everyone, no rhinos for these lads.I was going off the 3e Codex with the Crimson Fists on the cover and I have plenty of spare plasma pistols so I was just going to go Sarge and two squaddies with pistols and call it good.
>>98006556Very nice. I thought I had a scan of the monopose guy, but I guess I don't. All the old monopose plastics are charming as hell.
>>98006882Thematic as hell.
>>98006891The Sarge and his lads were a five man Assault Marine box I bought back in 3-4e to make into Raptors. Only finished the Sarge - which is debatable, but now that I am working on a loyalist army I plan on using his squad and a five man ebay rescue to be proper Assault Marines. I do have some mighty temptation to run a second ten man, non-jump pack squad with spare Grey Knight Interceptor backpacks and have them fluffed as teleporting/deep striking in.
>>98006862>Blobby>Soft>Lacks important details such as skin folds >Makes up detail in other parts, such as the ribbing on the tongue. As mentioned before, it's good enough for a vaguely oldhammer-shaped blob, but nowhere near the quality that a proper scan or human sculptor can achieve.
>>98006912Yeah, it's nowhere near as good as say openscan, but it can get close with good photos and some going over the mesh / sculpting a bit. I imagine it will only get better as well with further development. Here's a print I did based on an AI gen. It's not perfect as a copy, but a vaguely oldhammer shaped blob is nice to have on command for me.
>>98006515Lol. That's just what file.io spat out.

lmao this is my no research attempt at photogrammetry looks so shite :))))) Anyone have experience with the main photogrammetry apps ? Kiri seems good? Can i just take photos and use openscan software?
>>98008621It's an awesome part and works so well as a detail for any sufficiently vicious model. Overall the old zombie sprue was full of good options to add some flair to the stinky rhino.
>>98010540>the old zombie sprue was full of good options to add some flairAnd that's why it had to die, GW don't do that shit anymore.
>>98010529>Can i just take photos and use openscan software?Anon, openscan software is for taking the photos, it doesn't do the photogrammetry (although it can technically use a cloud based service).Metashape seems to produce good results although it's a little fiddly to use, the main issue is actually buying it. My bank transfer somehow scrubbed the reference code and I've been waiting for nearly 3 weeks for them to sort it out and send me my license key.
>>98010529Spray it all black.
>>98010970>>98010968I should just get an openscan mini lol, sucks to be poor.
I'm gonna paint my world eaters exactly like this and I don't care about anyone's opinion on the matter. Except I'm not gonna do goblin green bases.https://cowabungajournal.com/2021/09/17/the-bloods-skulls-chaos-space-marines/
>>98011758>Except I'm not gonna do goblin green bases. You disgust me more than you probably should.
>>98011758I reckon I'll sculpt a face or something on his left shin plate.
>>98011769OK I'll try it.. :0Which colour is close to OG goblin green that is readily available ? warcolour paints shipping is gonna take too long.
>>98011876Not quoted but probably Goblinoid Green from Duncan's Two Thin Coats range, it's matte instead of satin which is barely noticeable compared to coat d'arms but also easier to paint with. I can get those in my country from multiple suppliers while coat d'arms is import only.If you only get citadel then 2:1 warboss green and ogryn camo works too.
>>98010970 >spray it blackNah, you basically spray it zenithal, or a reverse zenithal with white first. You basically want lots of little dots for it to see.
Anyone got a good recommendation on new mats reminiscent of the old citadel ones that are actually 6x4? I was hoping for a way to get my hands on one that didn't involve paying over two grand for an ancient one. A recipe for flock that actually looks like it and doesn't cost out the ass would be appreciated as well.I was really hyped by the old style board Lybbans Miniatures made.
>>98012360I'm talking about the setup, not the mini.

>>98012599Haha that's awesome. I've always used Vallejo Goblin Green and honestly I'd bump it up to A tier. It even looks really similar in the chart.
>>98012798Now we need a second comparison chart to determine which one *tastes* the most like original '94 Goblin Green
>>98012441Maybe something like this. 3 of these on some wooden board should get you a 6'x4' table.https://www.amazon.de/Grasmatte-Modellbau-Spurweiten-l%C3%A4ndliche-DIY-Projekte/dp/B0084FSI8Y
>>98012441There's lots of videos on using thinned silicone caulk over a canvas painter's drop cloth to make a near match. Since the caulk is flexible after it dries it holds the flock better. Seems a mess to make, but I've always wanted to try it.
>>98012841Yeah, that looks pretty good though from a video I found it looks a bit too dark. They do actually sell a 200x120 version of this mat https://www.amazon.de/-/en/NOCH-Spring-Meadow-Making-Perfect/dp/B0000WP4CW but i'm a bit worried about the color not being right.
>>98013136I recall hearing the geekgamingscenics complain about it because apparently the caulk shrinks and it's hard to roll up. I'd only worry about the former personally. He apparently used some equestrian horse mat but the equivalent outside the UK for me would be almost a grand just for the rubber mat.
>>97994750I meant to thank you earlier this week anon, so I'll thank you now. I still have a few of those in lead from when I was a teenager in the early nineties, but one or two disappeared over the decades and there were several that I wanted but never managed to get. (Getting minis in 1991 was more difficult than you might think, depending on where one lived, and no store around here ever had the entire selection, or even a good chunk of it. You got what you got and that was it.) I'd completely forgotten about the ones that got away until you posted this and now, 35 years later, I finally have them. Thanks again.

>>98019909It is a good pain, man.
>>98019795It all makes so much sense now.
>>98020240Though I think this was the first chainsword depiction. Going by all the interviews the Wil Rees stuff was the first commissioned RT art, and everything else was everyone building on it. I'm sure there is a JB sketch or outline that precedes everything of course.
>>98013232>>98013136I've made a couple of them, you need to clamp the mat to a frame (or the table) when you spread the caulking, it'll keep it stretched as the whole thing dries. Make the cloth larger than you need and then cut it to size once it's dried, otherwise it won't dry square. Also, you HAVE to put something waterproof under the dropcloth or it'll glue itself to your table and you'll need to refinish it and apologize to your wife. Hopefully not in that order.

>>98030111Most of it is scanned, but after some GW crackdowns and pajeets taking advantage to resell shit, a lot of Oldhammer scanners have gone private and really don't want their stuff to be shared anymore. Most have now begun digitally watermarking their files to catch and ban leakers. There's a bunch of publicly available RT and 2e stuff, which you can get on the scanpass tg channel or asking in request groups, the rest will have you asking around and hoping somebody will get in touch. I know there's a group doing 2e marines and sisters currently I'm currently in a couple of groups that release 3rd-4th edition fantasy scans of very high quality at really nice prices, but that's all I can say, as they request privacy and I see no reason to violate it. >>98035990My headcanon is that the RT Emperor art is still the 100% true canon Golden Throne and, like John Blanche has said, his 3rd edition version that everyone takes as the modern official canon is actually a fake simulacrum created for the pilgrims to see.
>>98036065Ome of the few times an headcanon sounds quite well, and I would also add that tgis one is equaly true, all the rest is either an emanation of the Emperor's psychic might that males everyone envision nit him, but his potency, while in reality he's some miserable ass piece of seasoned beef jerky

>>98036252>>98036312I miss when Chaos Marines looked completely and utterly different from normal ones like this. Like their armor was just so twisted by the warp it had grown into an almost unrecognizable bio-mechanical suit that doesn't resemble the power armour of loyalists much at all. Modern GW seems to try to capture this feel a little bit with their current Chaos models but they half-ass it too much, almost like its out of cowardice, of fear of being too extreme, so it just comes off kind of lame.
>>98036252>>98036312Why did we go from this biomechanical, warped armour look to just spiky space marines and random lard asses in larp armour?

In short, a paint job like this would not be properly appreciated by anyone that wasn't looking at it in person with magnification. Truth be told, I completely missed the introduction of NMM when it happened because I only ever saw it in magazines at the time, and they didn't adequately convey what was being done. What was actually happening would have been painfully obvious to an adult, but when you're a kid you tend to believe what you're being told. I completely understand why the studio painters were feeding us bullshit and pushing the company's paints (it was their job), but like Dwayne Johnson telling kids that they can look like him if they eat right and work hard in the gym it's incredibly frustrating as a child or teen to be given false expectations via dishonest advice.>here we are 30 years later, and when someone on the internet asks for advice about how to use GW's white paint, the most usual answer is for them to switch brands>the studio painters still swear by it>some things never change
