In my own setting the High Elves are basically like Hasidics mixed with stormfags that are all about racial and ideological purity, and thus tend to see humans as annoying savages at best, and targets for eradication at worst, while most other Elves have more reasonable takes, and a minority even see it as their duty to protect Humans and the other races and act as "shepherds of the world" in a sense.I do think the "haughtiness" aspect is an important part of Elves, since even the best intentioned Elves would seem haughty to humans simply by virtue of their intelligence, lifespan, etc. The bigger the disparity between elves and humans the stronger that effect should be. Like, if you're incredibly attractive, have an IQ in the 160s, never need to shit or sleep, and live hundreds or thousands of years, statements that seem completely reasonable to you will come off as egotistical or derogatory to some normalfag human by virtue of the extreme difference in experiences and capability alone.

I had written this whole thing about my world being a landmass with a giant fresh water "sea" dotted with islands and the many elven houses that arrived from the north and their religious need to conquer human lands(all female race elves are). And then I realized I was just doing a version of the Mexica origin story.Even the houses at the end of the day where a variation on the warrior societies of the knights. I didn't even realize this until I was re-reading some of the notes I took. Now I'm wondering if I should double down on this and make the elves even more clearly prehispanic (which I both like because it allows me to go wilder with colors but sucks because that means no cavalry and cavalry is awesome) or try to force them into something else.
