>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.

The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre. Let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, Open Combat, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, SAGA, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void,
Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenos Rampant, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.
Archon Studio, Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Goblin King Games, Lucid Eye, Mantic,
North Star Military Figures, OnePageRules, Osprey, Para Bellum, Seb Games, Spellcrow, TTCombat,
Victrix, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

Does Savage Worlds Showdown count?
https://peginc.com/product/savage-worlds-showdown-2/
I need more suggestions for games that fit the TQ.
>>
>>97968318
Regarding Oathmark army building yeah. I feel like you get too many territories. It doesn't really feel like much of an restriction, it's always possible to take any combination of units. I feel like it leans into the RP and legacy aspect of it and you are meant to lock yourself into a kingdom for the duration of campaign/season/whatever instead of making it whatever will fit your list at the time but even then it doesn't feel that restrictive. Some units are limited but at the intended points it's not like there's that much room for multiples of higher end units anyway.
>>
Need to actually do my hobbies that make me happy and not worry about social media and stuff too much

>>97969593
Yeah, this is why I'm considering a smow grow campaign where we add territories over time

>TQ

The rampant wargames cover eras from the ancients to sci-fi. I've found them to be fun games, but many hate the activation system. I also think Xenos rampant would benefit from optional vehicle damage table rules. Otherwise fighting tanks becomes an exercise of just chipping their health to zero.
>>
>>97969698
Social media is cancer

OPR, the rules stat bowmen and laser riflemen similarly so you can mix tech levels seamlessly.
The explanation for how and why that works out is up to you.

>Are there such things as a wargame that covers the most tech levels and settings that is easy to learn and fun?
Yes. What scale do you want? Skirmish, platoon, company? 6mm, 10mm, 15mm, 28/32mm?

Working on a starter set for Frostgrave, not done making terrain yet. Only have basecoats on the mook enemies, the warband and vampires will get more attention when I paint them.
>>
>>97970235
Fantasy and Scifi OPR last time I check are the same game. They only changed the names for some special rules.
Hell Warfleets does not feel like a space ship game for the same reason and that one has a very different ruleset than the generic OPR.

Is that a reaper war mammoth? How was the reaper plastic compared to WGA?
>>
>>97971794
It is. Plastic was softer, somewhat less detailed, and it's out of scale with the WGA guys, which leads to this mammoth being about twenty feet tall at the shoulder, and the skulls dangling from its chains being oversized enough they must be ogre skulls. No big deal.
>>
>>97971811

Ok. I thought of buying some reaper monster figures for different projects, but I like to do some research (ie. ask /awg/ or /WIP/) before I buy anything.
>>
>>97971829
Honestly, I wouldn't buy again unless I really liked a particular design.
>>
>>97971838

I see. Can I ask why you bought WGA models, when victrix has similar models with similar price and superior details? Or is victrix less available outside of Europe?
>>
>>97971848
WGA was in my local game store already and I didn't want to special order or buy online.
>>
>>97971829
Reaper has like four different kinds of plastic they use. Some are sharper than others, but they're all relatively soft. They hold paint very well, but are also hydrophobic so the first layer needs to be mechanically thinned rather than with water or a medium. To their credit, you don't need to use actual primer and their own paint line does this step very well. I would recommend getting one pot of it to use as the base coat if you do get any of their plastic minis.
>>
>>97972209
I just primed over their own primer and it came out fine.
>>
>>97972234
I've had mixed results with primer on their stuff, but the main point is to just not have any exposed plastic for when you put down properly thinned layers later on. I tried using watered down paint on it and it beaded up and rolled off.
>>
Reaper Bones going from cheap to as expensive as other companies metals (Reaper Metals are stupid expensive) is so wounding.

And now they transport prices from USD to GBP directly 1:1 making them even more expensive

The brits do the 1:1 with everything not the the US dollar. That always is in their favor and have been doing it for decades.
>>
>>97972263
That's an.... interesting choice for them. I wouldn't put their minis on my table even when they were cheap, quality is too low.

IME a growing campaign works best when each player gets 1-2 Ring Four territories and can put a Unique Territory (see Oathbreakers) into their kingdom. Then you have additional Unique Territories they can fight over that only one player can control at a time, and they can add more R4s before they get into the R5s. Works best as an escalation league. It's less the high-rarity stuff that's usually the problem when you do splash-heavy armies -- two Cities is a huge command advantage for your main faction and you really need another one for your sub-faction to get officers for them as well. Throw on a tower for a level 3+ spellcaster and that's nearly half your starting territories

>>97973390
I'm gonna hold out till the new book hits (August apparently) before I nail down details. I've talked one other guy into trying it out, he's buying some dorfs the LGS has tomorrow. I was thinking we each start with just a city and doing small forces (like 500) at first, so he doesn't have to spend a bunch time on his army before we play at all. I've offered to print him stuff, but there's still painting to consider.

Any suggestions for a PvPvE game? Or what is your favorite and why?

I'm looking for a skirmish game with campaign progression for ~3 players. Ideally the scenarios/mechanics are such that NPCs can't be ignored (so it's not effectively just PvP) but you're also not incentivised to just play co-op against them (so it's not effectively just PvE).
>>
>>97973964
The only game I know of that fits that description is Frostgrave.
>>
>>97973964
Brutality does it, somewhat better AI and enemy mechanics than Frostgrave/Ghost Archipelago. GA's critters are a LOT less forgiving than FG's. They do still feel like minor threats, though, while Brutality's are more like a third warband showing up to fuck your shit up. Several of the complications in Zone Raiders are nasty locals, but they kinda feel more like terrain.
The previous edition of This is Not a Test has the "Eat, Prey, Live!" expansion for fighting kaiju, a free demo scenario that's semi-co-op and some fairly nasty wandering monsters in the other scenarios. About 75% of the scenarios in 1e supplements haven't been ported over yet; unlike some of the warbands they're largely unaffected by the changes to Skills and Mutations. So almost all of them will be G2G.

And of course most zombie or STALKER-like games (Walking Dead, Last Days, et. al) have a crapload of zombies on the board.

The heavy infantry look better than I thought. Really like the welding mask. I wonder if the beastmen are the size of the satyrs they released earlier?

5core Skirmish Essentials. Light but still engaging, lots of material that's easy to add in.
>platoon
No X in Sight, with X being End, Stars or Hope depending on era/setting. A bit more granular but worth looking at. Renegade Scout might be more to your liking with the early 40k era styling.
>company
The X Hammer series, Democracy, Trench, Squad, etc. Are very light and fast. If you're aiming at using 40K 2000 pts take a look at Xenos Rampant as well. There's OPR, its meh but if you need it to be like noname brand 40k that's what they do.
>>
>>97975349
Why do you think it is a joke?
A good wargame like that should exist and it would validate the elitism those who don't play the warhammers have.

I've read on the campaign page that some canadians finally got their boxes showing up. Maybe yours is coming soon too.

>>97975393
The beastmen are pretty much identical in size as the regular infantry (maybe the goat horns make them a tiny bit taller). this makes them the size of GW Cadians, so a bit bigger than WGAs historical stuff. I believe the satyrs were on the smaller side, even compared to their historical minis, but i could be mistaken.

Thank you! Brutality looks interesting. The NPCs acting as a third warband does sound a bit tougher than area monsters.

I did look at Frostgrave but d20s can give a large pool or results and only the wizard progresses in the campaign? He also wrote The Silver Bayonet which seems more interesting (everyone levels and it's multiple d10s) but the Napoleonic theme seems a little limiting.

While looking around I also found The Doomed which seems to involve some level of competitive monster hunting.

I have no experience with zombie games.

One of my players really wants their warband to include some kind of offensive magic user. It's not always clear from what's available which systems support that.

Any further ideas or suggestions would be welcome.

Frosrgrave lore says the city is thawing, that it's thousand year freeze was magic.
As a leaf I know that this means the evironment is warm, ice and snow don't melt when it's still winter and cold.
>>
>>97982343
God bless Canadian education
>>
>>97982366
I am unsure of the tone behind this comment.
My point being, that if Felstad was in a winter environment, regular snows and sub-zero cold being a daily and nightly thing, that the thousand year frozen city wouldn't be thawing out and having big chunks of ice break off to reveal parts of the city (maze of malcor).
The lore says it was frozen by magic, definitely magic, so a bvig freak blizzard burying the city wasn't on the table.
But more if they were so far north as to be in a land of forever winter it wouldn't matter if it were a thousand years or ten thousand, a heat sink the size of a city in a land of no heat is never going to melt in that state.
So the magic is wearing off and now it is melting, this means the temperatures outside in that locale are above zero, doesn't need to be by much, but could easily be up to 20C, we've had 10C-20C here for a month now and there are still big piles of snow and ice here and there because a large pile of that is enough of a heat sink to maintain it's own frozen state in such temperatures, there have been years where a sufficiently large snowplow pile (over 30 feet tall) stuck around surviving heat and sun until june!
So, for the city to now be melting just because the magic has worn off means the climate is not arctic, from the writing it is clear that Mcullough is not aware of the realities of this, but whatever.
A very large city sized pile of snow and ice (sufficient to totally bury much of it) could stay mostly frozen for decades in 10C-20C weather.
