He was witnessing what was effectively a 5,000 year headstart on what he himself wanted and the beauty of the first layer really touched him. Imagine spending your entire 4,000 year life both fighting Phyrexia and also trying to be like the Thran. I don't remember the specific book, but once the Titans arrived on Phyrexia, Urza stopped and sorta took it in, I remember a line about "If there was anything left of the Thran, it's here". Combine it with the 8th layer literally showing him a tortured phantom of Mishra, a monument to his inability to actually drive out Phyrexia and its ability to corrupt, I'd argue it's not impossible to break. He was never fully mentally stable, his disconnectedness and mixed feelings made him feel relatable despite being what effectively was a god.
