Magic the Gathering: No UB"May I?" EditionPreviously on...>>97975596 This is a general for a version of Magic the Gathering that excludes 3rd party IPs, these cards are known as "Universes Beyond". This thread is not a duplicate of any other general, it is not a fork of any specific general. There is growing support for versions of Magic formats that exclude UB, for example Planar Standard. This general is the place for those discussionsThis general is as legitimate as D&D Old School Renaissance threads and it exists for similar reasons.Discussion of Magic the Gathering where no set or release that required 3rd party IP licensing can be mentioned. That includes Universes Beyond and Secret Lair. The ONLY Magic sets this year:>Lorwyn Eclipsed, January 23 2026>Secrets of Strixhaven, April 24 2026>Reality Fracture, October 2 2026Thread Question:Are planeswalkers a mistake?

>>98011020>Thing.>Thing, but le opposite.god this shit sucks so much fucking ass holy fuckhow uncreative can you be?
I've been thinking. whenever I play interaction or try slow down the game with something. it ends up benefitting the opponent who is not affected way more because they can just keep playing and didn't spend a card. I have seen this pattern more and morelike yeah it seems obvious but lemme give an example>player A plays RIP>resident graveyard player is now not a threat. good, right?>but wait, now A has fewer potential allies who could stop player C who doesn't care about graves and has snowballed to the archenemy>A has now accidentally kingmade Cthis can be any strategy really so while stopping one player early might seem good I've seen it so many times to come back and win the bystander the gamehow do you fix this? do I just become the simicplayer myself and just play my own game? extending resources against endless value piles doesn't seem worth it anymore but playing solitaire seems boring
>>98013524Short answer:you solve it by not dropping stax pieces at random, and having ways to turn on/off the pieces as necessary Long answer:If playing Rest in Peace would neutered B but leaves C open to win, then you should coordinate with the rest of the players to handle either one of or both players before using RIP. You can slo drop multiple stax pieces that cover different strategies at the same time so whoever doesn't get hurt by the first gets hit by the latter. Stax has to be all or nothing, or you stop them long enough to combo on your own turn. Control sucks to play against because bad players kingmak due to bad sequencing or deck building. Stax that locks out the game so they can combo uninterrupted is the "socially acceptable" stax
>>98013607NEEDING to work together against ramp n' draw every time seems to happen disproportionate amount of times. never have I ever seen the orzhov or mono black for example threaten the game by turn 5 unless it's combo, which again plays like solitaire
